Reviews for Grand hotel Starý Smokovec

Review 1:No comments.

Review 2:If you`re going to Starý Smokovec, You`re gonna meet some gentle people there. When you`re going to Starý Smokovec, Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair. For those who come to Starý Smokovec, Wintertime will be a nice love-in story.

Review 3:The fitness centre is like a tiny cleaner´s cupboard packed with three machines, one day of my stay not accessible due to massages, you need to walk in your bathrobe through the cafe to the wellness, the armchairs and the wallpaper in my room a bit worn out. Pity the guests don´t respect the dresscode in the dining room.

Review 4:Excellent food, the old times atmosphere, a very large room with a sofa and two armchairs and a large bathroom.

Review 5:I think the room, the bathroom, probably the wellness also is due for refurbishment. It is still reasonable but simply does not reflect the level you expect from a hotel that should be the 1st among the best ones due to its history.

Review 6:Great location, spacious room, real KUK spirit and interior. Wifi in the room. Panoramic view. Staff.

Review 7:Excelent stay in a historic hotel! Luxury and travel back to the classin era of High Tatras tourism. Very nice wellness center, professional and kind staff, excellent cousin! The room a basic doubke room, but it was big and the bathroom was beautiful. The view on the mountain from the room was stunning!

Review 8:Lack of shower curtain in bathroom. Lack of wash cloths in bathroom just like most European hotels. Spa was two flights down stairs without availability of a lift so wasn't so inclined to use it. Would like to see some additional staff with English capability. Updating of furniture and decor to brighten up the hotel.

Review 9:The manager of the hotel, Ing. Marek Koumal greeted us, and spent time showing us the opportunities at the hotel. He was a very positive, upbeat person, and open to feedback. He made a difference for us and his command of English was excellent. The size of our room was great with a lovely view. Food and service was excellent.

Review 10:A little hard to get to (but worth it if weather is good, so you can enjoy the mountains)....

Review 11:Very elegant and nice place to stay....My wife was there in the 1980s and not much had changed....Some guests werent prepared for formal dining room and wore t-shirts and sandals....

Review 12:We enjoyed our stay but it could do with some maintenance - it is a little run down.

Review 13:Comfortable, historic hotel, well located in the high tatras. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed dinner and breakfast in the restaurant. Our waiter was exceptional. We enjoyed drinks, snacks and live music in the Castro cafe. We would definitely stay there again if we were in the area.

Review 14:Lack of proper blind prevented sleeping well. Staff was quite unfriendly.

Review 15:The location and the spacious room. Nice original paintings on the wall. Very good and fast free wifi.

Review 16:The hotel needs renovation and further investment. The walls are paper thin, you can literally hear conversations from the neighbour room. Interiors need extra touch, walls are empty.

Review 17:Perfect location and perfect service, food very tasty, wellness centre really good.

Review 18:The reservation could not be found by the receptionist upon arrival but had been available upon departure. No public computer is available.

Review 19:The rooms are spacious and furnished in a kind of mountain chalet. The indoor pool has lovely views. Dinner is either à-la-carte or half-board with a coice of main courses.

Review 20:Could be a bit more authentic (mean the historic values of the place), receptionist I met could be a bit more welcoming. Half-board dinner is weak in quantity.

Review 21:Historical building, wellness part is great. Breakfast is fine. Liked the billiard (pool) tables.

Review 22:Poor wifi. We were at end of corridor abd could hardly get a signal which was very slow. pity there was no air con as it was extremely hot nearly 40 deg C drinks very over priced - coffee abd soft drinks - we only had these once and then went and bought a coffee for 1/3 of price next door the next night.

Review 23:Very grand posh hotel recently refurbished and just opposite railway station.

Review 24:Wifi only in common areas. In the swimming pool too loud music could be heard from the spa

Review 25:Nice wellness spa. Rich buffet breakfast. Big room and large bed. Nice atmosphere.

Review 26:We would have preferred a shower unit rather than a bath with a shower attachment and no curtain.

Review 27:Magnificent hotel in a magnificent location. Highly competent, professional and friendly staff. The entertainment provided by Monica and Dominica. Great to be remembered from previous visits.

Review 28:Quiet in the evenings, poor quality of bathroom, limited choice of tea/coffee in room, worn carpets and wallpaper

Review 29:Location close to funicular, large room, excellent spa facilities, good views

Review 30:Before tasting any "new drink on the slovak market", askthe price directly!!!!so you avoid to see 19 eur for 0.04cl on yourbill l!!!!!!

Review 31:Besides this drink with exagerated price for Slovakia we likedeverything! We will come back again;

Review 32:The limited fixed menu if you took, like us, half board. Didn't expect to go all the way to the High Tatras and get roast beef and roast potatoes, fish and chips and peas and rhubarb crumble. The hotel is nice but a bit dated and is looking a bit sad, nothing a lick of paint and bit of varnish wouldn't fix. No wifi in the rooms which is a slight pain

Review 33:Beautiful area, and very pleasant staff. The suite we had was very nice if, like the rest of the hotel, a bit dated.

Review 34:The food. The dinner was slightly a step above airline food, with little selection and the quality not good. Breakfast was better.

Review 35:The 1920s-1930s decor and feel. Like the Grand Budapest Hotel. Spa was wonderful. Room was huge.

Review 36:Only negative is no twin bedded rooms. We had to do with one in the bed and the other on the couch (which they did make up with a mattress on top but still not ideal).

Review 37:Great location, nice room, wonderful breakfast buffet, fabulous spa.

Review 38:To be charge at breakfast for cappuccino 3.3. Euro after paying 113 Euro for the room is ridiculous and insulting. The situation of the tappet and the carpets in the room are in poor situation.

Review 39:I liked the luxury of the hotel outside and inside the building and the location and the excellent staff.

Review 40:Hotel could do with a bit of refurbishment however maybe it wouldnt have such a grand feeling about the place than.

Review 41:We really enjoyed the size of the room, view from the window and wellness facilities were amazing. It was a rainy weather outside but we still had fantastic time thanks to Grandhotel facilities. Really nice place.

Review 42:Miserable wifi. If you are on half board do not expect anything extraordinary.

Review 43:Wellness. Decor. Close to funicular. Would have loved a view to the mountains.

Review 44:That people came out from sauna naked and without taking shower went to whirpool.

Review 45:We stayed just for one night but it was awesome. We spent 4 hours in wellness which was for free for hotel guests.

Review 46:needs to be renovated, however the original furniture and parts of hotel are really admirable

Review 47:location, service, breakfast, wellness, almost everything was so cool as I like this kind of hotels

Review 48:Bathrooms are old fashioned and hence difficult to keep clean. Limited opening times welness centre (what to do on rainy grey days?). The hotel is well maintained, but modernisation is required.

Review 49:Brilliant location for hike tours, good connection with local villages by train/tram. Fantastic pizzeria Montannero at 200m east above supermarket. Good welness facilities, only from 16.00 to 21.00. Hotel food looks good but taste could ne better and more fresh (e.g. old trout or chewy bread).

Review 50:Cleaning staff not relly serious in way keep away fingers from cosmetic things;(...definitive we are dissapointed about slovak wellness area feeling. Small but nice pool, but sauna part too dark, not enough lights, feeling is they think more on erotic as on wellness. No possibility to take fresh air after sauna!!! You are pushed to calm down in terrible wet wellness air.

Review 51:Good connection to train, street, good parking, very friendly and helpfull front desk staff, friendly waitors, not so friendly cleaning staff.

Review 52:- Wifi was not reachable in the room. - Bed mattress was hard.

Review 53:The total experience was excellent. The quality of services and facilities were great. The SPA facilities were amazing and made the whole experience really worth it.

Review 54:Problem getting a pleasant room. The quality of the rooms varies greatly. Parking only outside, first-come first-served.

Review 55:Old-fashioned environment. Quiet. Nice views. Pleasant swimming pool. Good food.

Review 56:Overpriced bar menu, cold /hot drinks , overpriced accomodation...

Review 57:Costumer service, front desk and restaurant staff very helpfull. Clean and modern spa facility.. Decent food in restaurant.

Review 58:Shame about the weather!; buffet evening meals were a little disappointing as towards the end of the service(8.30pm) period the choice was limited and the food was barely warm

Review 59:Spacious room overlooking valley; relaxed atmosphere; access to railway ; beautiful breakfast

Review 60:For some it was poor or no wifi in the room however lobby and bar are covered with wifi.

Review 61:Great hotel in wonderful nature of High Tatras. I loved the food we got. Free parking, lovely coffee bar in the lobby. I will visit this hotel again.

Review 62:the swimming pool is open from 15:00 only.

Review 63:the reception lady was very kind and helpful, was also speaking on Russian fluently. the location of the hotel is excellent, 1 minute far from railway station and also from mountain's wagons.

Review 64:The wellness was a bit small to cover all the hotel guests as well as the guests from other places who came to join. The thing I really did not like was a fact there were many clients using the wellness facilities completely naked, joining the whirpool with naked couple made me feel uncomfortable, but this fact can not be influenced by hotel staff, it just says enough about the character of the guests who do not really care about the hygiene and comfort of the others. Missing the free wifi in the rooms,

Review 65:-slow Wifi in the room -smell in the room (like old woman...)

Review 66:-good WiFi connection in other hotel areas (excluding room) -big room -professional and nice staff (reception, waiter in the lobby, "Nicolas Cage" bellboy (I think bellboy) -good location

Review 67:It would have been nice to have a kettle in the room.

Review 68:This hotel has an impressive breakfast buffet and a nice spa. The building of the hotel is beautiful, and the interior has some old world charm. It was nice to be there.

Review 69:Poor facilities... Wifi not working in rooms or lobby. Rooms too warm at night and no control over that. No overnight service... After 9pm..!!

Review 70:Location

Review 71:The dinner buffet was, on two of our four nights, totally useless for vegetarians - i.e. side dishes only. The WiFi hardly ever worked in our room. One night, after 10:00pm, there was an awful lot of shouting in the corridor by young children - this must have been audible in the reception but clearly the staff didn't think it was worth addressing.

Review 72:A magnificent building in a fantastic location - I've stayed here before and will do so again. We loved the spa/pool and our son loved the kids play area.

Review 73:good location in the middle of Stary Smokovec, hotel has good starting position if you want to go hiking, you can easily get from the hotel to Strbske Pleso or Tatranska Lomnica. delicious food + great spa

Review 74:no good light in bed, not dark in the night by sleep, no piano player in café

Review 75:place in Stary Smokovec by lift, time in wellness- swimming pool was open in the morning, wifi, rich breakfest in price

Review 76:Half a chandelier for bedside reading isn't practical. A toss of your curls and the light is dancing over the page. A hotel of this standard shouldn't have a coffee machine in the breakfast room. I expected the real thing, and hot milk!

Review 77:The feeling of fin de siecle luxury. The friendly and competent staff. The small herbal pillow. The fantastic spa. The High Tatras outside my windows.

Review 78:We didn't like having to leave. We enjoyed our stay so much.

Review 79:The atmosphere in the hotel was comfortable and the reception desk staff extremely helpful, It is ideally position for walking and exploring the High Tatras. In the evening the food is superb after a leisurely soak in the bathroom. The light railway is another asset to those who wish to explore without too much effoet

Review 80:Limited opening times for access to pool in the morning. Bar was closed on Saturday night due to a wedding and private party taking place which was disappointing

Review 81:Excellent staff very good food ,relaxed breakfast experience Spacious clean room and lovely leisure facilities

Review 82:Restaurant nice with good food, but a little too big and quite noisy

Review 83:À beatiful building with a special atmosphere - old fashioned but not outdated. Excellent location. Friendly and helpful staff. A very nice spa.

Review 84:quality of a bed - very soft bed otherwise everything was ok

Review 85:staff was excellent, breakfast and dinner were rich and very tasty, the spa centrum was also great with various saunas, big thanks goes to the manager of a hotel, who arrange for us solo hall for breakfast and dinner, because we had a dog with us :)

Review 86:The hotel promote a half board package. The problem is the evening meal which is set with very little choice and is not a good standard of food, especially the deserts which having catering experience I guess are bought in frozen and are not nice at all

Review 87:I stayed three nights at the hotel. The majority of the facilities were very good. Spa and the room. Choice at breakfast was good

Review 88:The hotel is a classic - old style but with loads of charm. The spa facilities are great. The staff were friendly, polite and professional. The food was good, the bistro lunch was delicious. The landscape is beautiful. We can highly recommend this hotel and location to anyone.

Review 89:The service is not what you would expect from a 4 star. The food is decidedly average and the choice limited. No real atmosphere in the restaurant or cocktail lounge/coffee area. Restaurant atmosphere is more like a shopping mall or works canteen

Review 90:Location is great and the hotel itself is quite an impressive building.

Review 91:The curtain on windows surprisingly low quality for the price of the room. Also the soap ??? and shampoo ???

Review 92:First day excellent food. Second day surprisingly untasty different maybe they changed the chef cook

Review 93:extremly rude blond girl in the bar

Review 94:really enjoyed our stay, wellness, food, had an amazing view from our window

Review 95:old furniture, old tv, to go to spa no indication and have to pass through restaurant, bar food very poor

Review 96:n

Review 97:Very friendly service and excellent location.

Review 98:You have to go across the lobby and part of the bar to get to the wellness part. That's uncomfortable.

Review 99:Great location and view and atmosphere

Review 100:Staffs are not kind.

Review 101:Location is perfect

Review 102:The close proximity to wonderful walks followed by relaxation in luxurious surroundings in the evening

Review 103:The spa facilities and th e Castro bar

Review 104:Fabulous architecture and service.. Great food ... One of our friends thought it was the best hotel he'd ever stayed in ...

Review 105:Staff very attentive and friendly.

Review 106:Expensive, outdated hotel.

Review 107:We asked for 1 double size duvet which was not possible to get.

Review 108:Amazing hotel, helpful staff, met all expectations

Review 109:We had a suite (221) and the wifi didn't reach that far!

Review 110:The beautiful location

Review 111:Super hotel

Review 112:Old hotel which not always have been upgraded to today's standard

Review 113:Liocation

Review 114:Would be nice to have a complimentary bottles of water in the room

Review 115:Really nice and helpful staff, good location and great wellness.

Review 116:If it's raining out, there is not much to do.

Review 117:Great Staff. We loved the health and beauty spa.

Review 118:Hotel rooms and entire building needs renovation.

Review 119:Great view and location at the foot of the mountain - with railcar close to the hotel.

Review 120:need to be refurbished and wallpapers looks little bit old and damaged

Review 121:Nice hotel in art nouveau style, great atmosphere, spacious room, bath included

Review 122:Nothing

Review 123:Size of room and wonderful old worldly feel of the hotel plus location. The spa section was also very good

Review 124:location of the hotel, luxurious furnishing, vintage, facilities, fantastic wellness

Review 125:we booked half board , the dinner is very basic and really I did not like the food

Review 126:very good location, just 2 minutes from fanicular

Review 133:location, nice view

Review 134:Beautiful mountains, quite atmosphere, unique resort...

Review 135:Beautiful hotel in an excellent location with amazing staff, highly recommend to anyone staying in the area
