Reviews for Ale House Inn
Review 1:A perfect location to see Portsmouth by foot. The room was very accommodating to our needs. Quiet, comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Tranquil stay!
Review 2:The description said there would be bath robes, but we didn't have any in our room. This was one of the reasons we booked this room over another.
Review 3:Craig was extremely helpful. He had amazing recommendations for food. The bed was comfy and the ceiling fan was perfect.
Review 4:We choose this hotel because of the included bikes. We arrived Sunday and were told one of the bikes needed to be fixed, when we left Wednesday that bike still had a flat tire. Also my credit card was charged 65$ for tax, without informing me. I saw the charge and had to inquire about it, the woman I asked didn't know why I was charged since we paid in full three months prior.
Review 5:The location was perfect!! The rooms were nice, very clean and beds very comfortable. Most of the service was great.
Review 6:Location near wharf restaurants Not like a mega chain hotel.eg didn't require credit card code when reserving, free snacks in lobby, cold beer on check in..laid back...
Review 7:The entrance isn't for the faint of heart. Steep set of stairs followed by elevator to first floor of hotel. The elevator should require a key to operate for added safety. Felt safe as part of a couple; would have been less comfortable as a single, female traveler. Parking turned out to be OK as we got the next-to-last space and didn't take the car out during our stay. But catch-as-catch-can parking isn't a winning business model.
Review 8:Perfectly located for a walk-around visit to Portsmouth. In-room iPad loaded with local spots for eating, entertainment, etc. Minimalist room decor, eco-friendly.
Review 9:We were so impressed with little hide away! Very welcoming, easy to get get to, easy access, comfortable bed, kuerig coffee maker in the room, new technology in the room like smart tv and iPad, quiet, and extremely close walking distance to all cool things on Portsmouth. We can't wait to stay here again!
Review 10:Our only "complaint" was that the desk did not have a longer check-in time. The hours are 2-5pm and we were not planning to be in Portsmouth during those hours. However, we did stop in at 1pm to see if we could check in early and were easily accommodated.
Review 11:We were here just for one night as a mini-vacation. We were drawn to the history of this building-- an old brewery converted into a hotel!!-- and the location. It was very clean, quiet, and modern. We loved the decor of the room and the staff was very friendly. There were snacks in the common area when we got in that night, which was a nice bonus, and there was free water in the room. We were also greeted with a free Smuttynose Brewery beer upon arrival (with four options to choose from) which we thought was a nice touch! (We also visited the brewery on our trip, which is only about 20 minutes from the hotel.) We loved the cozy nature of this hotel in Portsmouth and would definitely return.
Review 12:Loved everything, only tiny thing that was mostly something I felt was a waste of energy more than a problem for us was that being an older building(although quite updated) there was a draft from the inset window. We fixed that problem by putting one of the decorative bed pillows in the window sill which made a huge difference and we didn't need the pillow. Just a minor thing but as a business owner I just saw money flying out the window as well as a waste of gas/oil. Didn't ruin my stay at all:)
Review 13:Location was fabulous, walking distance to everything since this was right in the heart of Portsmouth. The Inn was very clean, our room was not large but we knew that we booked one of the smaller size rooms but it was big enough for our needs, not cramped at all especially because it was just my husband and I. We went to Portsmouth to just relax, sleep late, have good food, walk around and do a little shopping. We checked all of those things off on the list and the Ale house inn was a great place to do the hanging out in. They provided us with an iPad that had information about local stuff to do. Even though I had my own iPad it was still very cool that they have one in the room. Room was very clean, shower water had great water pressure and got nice and hot. The room also came with a cork bottle opener as well as an umbrella which we thought was quite clever since we have had to go out and purchase or remember to bring those things with us in the past. Nice attention to detail. They also had nice midnight munchie snacks in the lobby which is located very close to the rooms since this place is fairly small. Free bottled water in the rooms. We arrived later in the day, was about 9:30 pm, which is past the hours of the hotel receptionists hours but were left excellent instructions as to how to get in the room as well as 2 cold beers in the frig for us which were free of charge. Great service! Loved it and will certainly return someday:)
Review 14:How fantastic to take an Ale Warehouse and create an Inn on the second floor and a Repertory Theater on the ground level. The rooms are much better than they look on the Website. They are modern and comfortable with fascinating views. We actually liked the fact that they do not serve breakfast as there is no pressure to appear and so many great places to eat in Portsmouth-a great breakfast at Colby's. The staff were very helpful as we had to arrive late and they made our stay very relaxing.
Review 15:The room we had was small, but comfortable enough! :)
Review 16:Great location, loved the in room iPad/free Wi-Fi, beautiful, creative and unique decor... you're not in just any "run of the mill" hotel.
Review 17:Stairs! There is a steep concrete flight of stairs to the front entrance which must be climbed for access. Entry is via intercom and buzzer. I arrived on time but got no response in the freezing rain outside (no canopy). Parking was nonexistent that evening due to a funeral across the street. I wouldn't have booked had I known. The room key given me by the booking clerk didn't work. After discovery, I had to choose to wait an extra 20 minutes before going to dinner so the (now) off site clerk could return and give the correct key, or leave my things in an insecure room. Room wasn't very private; I could clearly normal conversations at the check in desk across from my door.
Review 18:Short walk to all that historic Portsmouth has to offer. Clean rooms and nice extras such as local beers in the frig.
Review 19:This quaint B&B was right in the heart of Portsmouth. The off street parking was a huge plus! We didn't realize that it was restaurant week when we booked our trip...yet the ipad provided for us in the room was loaded with all of the local restaurants and the special menu offerings.
Review 20:Strange entry -- upstairs to locked door (postman let me in), then to anelevator and then down a tight corridor to a postage-stamp size check-instation. The place looks like a cross between a European hostel and aymca. The walls are thin so you can hear to the next room easily.
Review 21:Ease of booking. That the windows opened (which I felt important as itseemed like a fire trap and I could jump out to a fire escape ifnecessary)
Review 22:Instruction to check-in between 2-6pm - made us worried about being late
Review 23:Staff welcoming Nice boutique feel Lovely town Centrally located iPads in the room Nice lounge area
Review 24:Everything! We're sorry we didn't choose to stay another day. The location was perfect and the parking was far better than we anticipated. Chelsea was great, and answered all of questions and gave great suggestions.
Review 25:The rooms are a little dark (not enough window light) and the walls are a little thin if you're a light sleeper. Still, the benefits far outweighed the challenges on this stay. I'd come back.
Review 26:This is an excellent Inn for those who want to be in the thick of Portsmouth, and the staff are hip and friendly. They went out of their way to help me get the most out of my Portsmouth stay.
Review 27:No breakfast, room slightly small
Review 28:Comfortable and in excellent location. On the doorstep to nice restaurants and shops, near the waterfront. Free bottle of beer when signing in to room or non alcoholic drinks, beautiful room with lovely decor and luxury feel to it.
Review 29:It felt like we were staying in a dorm room from my college days. We had difficulty entering the building, followed by riding in a 1970's elevator, to the rooms as small as saltines. If they would have replaced the flat panel tv w/molded plastic stand, and queen bed with 2 of the following (single beds, 5 drawer dressers, wood desks) my parents could have been dropping me off. The bathroom was so small that one could not blow dry their hair!
Review 30:Location.
Review 31:We would have stayed another night, our rate was $199 (pricy but ok), we asked for another night, they only had the suite ($299) and could only discount it 17%, we declined.
Review 32:In the center of the historic district, very clean, staff was nice, the A/C was a little weak
Review 33:12 steps to enter corridor leading to elevator entrance to inn.
Review 34:Charming inn with modern updates. Helpful and friendly manager. Very convenient location for dining, shopping and walking.
Review 35:The extremely close location to downtown Portsmouth and it's many restaurants, bars and shops makes the Ale House Inn a great place to stay. We will certainly book a room there on our next over night stay in Portsmouth.
Review 36:Great place to stay for easy walking access to downtown Portsmouth. The staff was very friendly and informative. The complementary beer at check in was a fun bonus. Although we didn't end up checking out any bikes, there were some really cute cruisers that guests could take out for a spin. Ipads in the rooms were a nice touch too so we could quickly look up restaurants, etc. Only there for a quick overnight, but would go back again.
