Reviews for The Hotel Portsmouth - Downtown

Review 1:it was a homey and welcoming environment. staff was very friendly and genuinely happy to have you there. recommended to friends who are looking to go there as well will be going back for sure, wish I could have stayed longer....

Review 2:Nothing really!

Review 3:My son and I found your staff to be both welcoming friendly an efficient. Our room was very comfortable and the hotel generally was warm and inviting.

Review 4:3rd floor suite / tub-shower water pressure was less than ideal...

Review 5:Very comfortable small hotel...breakfasts very healthy and creative. Would definitely come back. Location very walkable to downtown.

Review 6:No bad experience. Only saw our room - hoping that the other bathrooms in the hotel were better configured than ours - very tight/claustrophobic even for just one person to use - the shower was a perfect size but otherwise very cramped with little room to move around. I would think it nearly impossible for a larger person to comfortably maneuver in the rest of the bathroom.

Review 7:Nicely decorated - keeping with the updated historic flare. Staff were delightful and went out of their way to please....Easy walk to town, Strawberry Banke... nice having parking onsite that did not charge.

Review 8:Staff was great continental breakfast was perfect you could grab coffee or banana bread pretty much throughout the day when you wanted it and if you need help there were right there to help you navigate the area

Review 9:Small bathroom

Review 10:The hotel was within walking distance to shopping and the music hall. The room was big with an additional small room with twin. Both rooms had tv

Review 11:The staff was very friendly and helpful. The hotel was beautiful, cozy and well maintained. We enjoyed the interesting breakfast foods and also the snacks that are left out to enjoy throughout the day.

Review 12:No bad experiences. I think scrambled eggs for breakfast would have been good.

Review 13:As soon as we walked in the hotel we felt at home. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. We loved the mix of original design to the house mixed with updated contemporary decor.

Review 14:Beautiful, restful decor; very helpful and enthusiastic staff, delightful breakfast / snack bar. Can't say enough about the lovely baths/bedrooms.

Review 15:The location was perfect for walking downtown. The staff was exceptionally helpful and friendly. The room was lovely--very clean, with a very comfortable bed. The hotel is beautiful and welcoming--inside and out.

Review 16:We loved the small "bread and breakfast" feel of the hotel yet with the modern, yet subtle traveler requirements. The breakfast nook was adorable, and the choices of food plentiful and healthy!

Review 17:This is a beautiful small hotel. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The room was very comfortable and clean, with a great shower. I would definetly stay there again.

Review 18:Breakfast was adequate but not a patch on many of the smaller inns we had stayed in. Our room backed on to the reception area and was a bit noisy.

Review 19:the location was perfect for exploring Portsmouth. The hotel had been sympathetically converted and the public rooms were a pleasant space to relax in. It was handy to have an iPad in the room preloaded with links to the local bars and restaurants.

Review 20:The rooms (4 of us stayed, some had same comments) smelled musty like unwashed bedroom linens. Most likely the bed spread and pillows. Pillows were not the best comfort. Minimal breakfast for the price... no eggs or waffles with berries for example. Asked for a group of four discount as was misinterpreted as seen online..was given a discount for the " next stay" instead of receiving this discount while we were there. It would have been a better incentive to come back.

Review 21:location, building is beautiful, parking was convenient.

Review 22:We had a fabulous experience the staff were so helpful always there .it was clean, they were very attentive towards there guests.Close to everything and walking distance

Review 23:It wasn't a bad experience but I found the room to be small. Also, the person above us was very heavy on his/her feet - it seemed like they were pacing back & forth for about an hr.

Review 24:It was located close to town & restaurants. We were able to park our car and walk everywhere.

Review 25:No bar facilities. Breakfast could have been a little more thought out although the cereal was delicious!

Review 26:The room was spacious, clean and very comfortable.

Review 27:it wasn't a bad experience but the only thing I would change is to have a place in the back with a fire pit. Maybe city rules dictate you can't. That would have made the stay perfect!

Review 28:The overall room was very clean, comfy bed and clean linens.

Review 29:Beautifully renovated hotel with a friendly young staff. Great attention to detail - including iPads in the rooms. Our bed was heavenly. We also loved the location - close enough to walk to the downtown, but in a quiet area.

Review 30:Great location, very clean, great rooms, classic, historic building with modern amenities! Room was very clean, comfortable and had everything we needed. When we return to Portsmouth we will return to the Hotel Portsmouth!

Review 31:Website sells idea of quirky boutique hotel, however rooms felt a little cold and very standard chain - as if they were a bit too cheap in the wrong places. Big but wasted space, no sense of luxury. This isn't a cheap hotel for Portsmouth. Breakfast ok but not great - that maybe us though as we expect better breakfasts in British hotels than we generally got in the US.

Review 32:Good location, easy parking and pleasant communal rooms. Great bed.

Review 33:Beautiful hotel in downtown Portsmouth! Perfectly located to all the best restaurants and shopping! The staff was pleasant, we will absolutely go back!

Review 34:Beautiful location. Perfectly decorated rooms & common areas. Lovely staff. The price was reasonable for a boutique hotel, and the room was clean & comfortable. Perfect location to walk anywhere downtown.

Review 35:We would have liked a kettle in our room. Shared less than boiling water to make tea in tin or paper cups not great for us Brits!

Review 36:Big, comfy room. iPad in room. TV channels on the iPad.

Review 37:Basin area was to wiped as I found nail clippings from previous guests. Bedside lamp switch not working

Review 38:Perfect location, nice decor, lovely house. Helpful staff

Review 39:For the money the breakfast was very disappointing compared to other Bed and Breakfast. The queen size bed sunk in the middle.

Review 40:Very Pretty and clean.

Review 41:Location; could walk to everything in Portsmouth. Water, including sparkling, in the kitchen. The room was very nice, modern with great accents of the past.

Review 42:small so easy to navagate, comfortable, small friendly lounges, easy to enter and exit the hotel, great locationwithin walking distance of food and shops, super friendly staff

Review 43:No bad experiences

Review 44:Clean, comfortable modern rooms in a historic building staffed by helpful and courteous people, and within easy walking distance of downtown

Review 45:The room was extremely small for the amount of money. I've hadmuch larger rooms for little more at much higher end boutiques. Theroom had a queen sized bed, one chair & a small table for thephone = beyond small!

Review 46:Staff were very polite and informative. It was very clean. The food areaand was inviting and snack items and coffee (etc) available allday/night. The location and parking were good.

Review 47:I asked for a thinner pillow because all the pillows on the bed were really big and thick. Maybe one of the pillows on the bed could be thinner? Also, I wish that there had been a few more face cloths and hand towels in the bath.

Review 48:Staff was very friendly and helpful.

Review 49:Although very high tech equipment in the room (loved the iPad with everything already loaded), contemporary room was a little stark for our taste.

Review 50:Location was excellent; could walk to almost all downtown locations. Theater is right around the corner.

Review 51:From the friendly greeting on check-in to the pleasant smiles on check-out there was nothing not to like. Dana at the front desk is an exceptional people person and made our stay one we'll remember often and with fondness.

Review 52:The front desk staff was smiling and helpful. Convenient location - two streets away from the center, perfect for a quiet stay. The room was great, we enjoyed the iPad provided for last minute restaurant reservations. The breakfast exceeded our expectations. We would definitely stay here again.

Review 53:No bad experiences, just did not use the breakfast -- had plans to meet someone in town.

Review 54:Excellent location, very comfortable king suite for family of 4. Appreciate the coupon to return, we'll likely use it!

Review 55:Rooms were drab and could be dressed up and modernized.Complementary breakfast was same as the big chains. Ok but nothingout of the ordinary.

Review 56:The location was great. The staff was helpful and very friendly.

Review 57:I thought the coffee was weak.

Review 58:The hotel is beautiful. Feels like a home but has the amenities of a classy hotel. I particularly liked the offering of purified water - both sparkling and non-sparkling - on tap in the lounge for our use at all times. The ambience is outstanding. The wood paneling, stately and refined. The location was perfect for walking around downtown Portsmouth.

Review 59:Continental breakfast was ok but just felt there could be a little more variety of cereals and bread.

Review 60:The location was within walking distance of all facilities. Really liked that there was coffee and tea available all the time. Especially liked that there was cold water available also.

Review 61:My background is in art and design, so I was thrilled with the renovation of the inn. The overall design, the art work, the small touches like soaps, and the friendliness of the staff made our stay a luxury.

Review 62:No complaints. I wish we could have stayed longer than one night.

Review 63:Old Victorian style home. Rooms upgraded, modern. Staff was superb.Owners man the front desk so they have a vested interest in yoursatisfaction and it shows!!!!! Downtown area in easy walking distance --great restaurants.

Review 64:Body lotion in the room would have been nice as well as a magnification mirror - but no big deal

Review 65:The location and architecture of the hotel - Very nice Breakfast! Staff very friendly and welcoming

Review 66:The blue ball jars as drinking glasses

Review 67:The facility is lovely! The staff was friendly and very helpful! Had a wonderful experience! We will be back with the hotel as a final destination to enjoy a weekend!this

Review 68:The hotel was a delight, clean, comfortable, great service and value. The staff gave us good advice on choices of where to eat, where to walk to visit old Portsmouth, and where to have a drink with a view. The building is turn of the century and has retained its character and yet is modern in its services.

Review 69:The door locks were terribly difficult to open. Very frustrating as we had to have staff help is. Other guests faced similar issues. That's the only downfall. Everything else was fantastic.

Review 70:All of the staff was very competent, friendly and accommodating. Even the guests seemed friendly and comfortable. The location and the parking lot is prime!!!!

Review 71:My wife and I booked the last room at THP at the last minute for a quick getaway weekend. We could not have been more delighted with our choice! The building and room were beautiful and full of thoughtful details. The staff was incredibly kind and accommodating!

Review 72:there were hot drinks available downstairs but it would have been good to have a coffeemaker in the rooms

Review 73:Really nicely designed and decorated hotel. Very helpful staff.

Review 74:The hotel is very nicely decorated, with a nice communal area. Breakfast was tasty and varied, staff were helpful and welcoming. Good location close to restaurants, shops and harbour.

Review 75:Great location and the hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. We would definitely go back beady walk to main area with restaurants and shopping. Decor was fresh and fun. Really a great spot!

Review 76:My only complaint is that our room needed a floor lamp or table lamp next to the chair by the fireplace. There was only a ceiling lamp so that area of the room was dark.

Review 77:Our room was so nice with a fireplace and very comfortable bed. The room was at the end of a small hallway, tucked under the stairs, but right across from the kitchen/dining area.

Review 78:The building was very comfortable. It blended the antique architecture with modern amenities seamlessly. Every staff member we encountered was friendly and helpful. Great place to visit.

Review 79:slight mildew smell near bathroom

Review 80:Common space gorgeous, dining room, breakfast. Super friendly helpful host. So many thoughtful touches like water pitcher and glasses.

Review 81:A microwave in the kitchen to heat up my milk for coffee would have been a plus.

Review 82:The Hotel Portsmouth made us think of the B&B's in England we stayed at when we lived abroad. Dana was very cheerful and helpful when she greeted us at check-in. The continental breakfast was nice.

Review 83:oh gosh, I was going to say 'nothing' but the coffee wasn't very enjoyable. Very very weak.

Review 84:We loved the privacy, We loved there weren't a million signs everywhere saying, "do this, don't do that". (Except the one that said if you forgot toothpaste, dial 0, because we were those people!) We loved the old yet modern feel of the hotel. We greatly enjoyed the living room as our children came from nearby and we were all able to visit.

Review 85:This is a lovely small hotel, with the feel of a b&b but none of the claustrophobia. Décor is a great mélange of beautifully restored Victorian and chic modern with a twist.

Review 86:This hotel is a perfect combination of old and new. The deluxe queen room we stayed in had a nice color scheme, and we loved the grey laminate floors in the bathroom and the original wood floor in the room area. The bed was super comfortable and the bathroom had a black towel for makeup (ladies who wear mascara might also love this touch). The hotel was quiet so we had the parlor with the gas fireplace all to ourselves. Staff members were very accommodating and friendly.

Review 87:My room was under the main stairway so it was a bit noisy around 10pm but it didnt stop me from getting a spund sleeo in the comfy bed.

Review 88:This boutique bed and breakfast hotel is wonderful. You can walk to everything that Portsmouth has to offer. The staff is friendly and accommodating, the room was nicely appointed and the breakfast was delicious. The atmosphere was cozy and relaxing and the common areas were charming. Im looking forward to going back!

Review 89:Sound from adjacent room through adjoining doors was a distraction. A couple in the next room were not talking above a normal level, but sounded like we were all in the same room. Front Desk staff informed us at check out that they were about to close for renovations and that this was one of the areas of planned improvements.

Review 90:Located downtown within easy walking distance of many Portsmouth attractions and shopping venues. Beautiful woodwork in main lobby areas. Great staff, very friendly.

Review 91:The morning coffee was just average.

Review 92:Loved the contemporary decor in our room. (103) It would have been nice to have some light in the desk space. Would book here again.

Review 93:Its a little off the beaten track but still walkable to area shopping and restaurants.

Review 94:The building is gorgeous and easily accessible. Staff friendly. The free parking is a great asset. The rooms were modern but comfortable. The continental breakfast had everything you could want. Items fresh, area cozy.

Review 95:Newly renovated spaces are a bit dark and the color scheme is a bit bland without much life in it, nor did it feel that soothing to this line traveler.

Review 96:The staff (Chris) was extremely warm, welcoming and helpful with suggestions. He called to check on local availability for me. The hotel is very clean and neat. Easy to find as well. It is within easy walking distance to shops and offices.

Review 97:We appreciated the simple comforts of our lovely bedroom: hairdryer exquisite bed,air circulator. We had a tiny Water view, but it felt like we had a larger one because of the rooms seaside colors. The house itself is gorgeous old building with intricate maple woodwork.

Review 98:The heat was on a little too high, but that was nothing major.

Review 99:The location right in downtown Portsmouth leaves you steps from lots of bars and restaurants. A great place to stay.

Review 100:Maybe a tad thin walls? I heard the traffic a bit too much than I had hoped. Other than that everything was lovely.

Review 101:Beautiful interior and friendly and helpful staff. I left some flowers at the front desk and they had it in a vase in my room when I got back! Extremely comfortable bed and fancy bathroom.

Review 102:Only negative to the hotel was our room's shower water temperature. Not very hot.

Review 103:Great hotel. Very courteous and professional staff. Got a free room upgrade.

Review 104:We stayed one night at the Hotel Portsmouth. The hotel is beautiful, our room was very nice, most comfortable bed ever! The bathroom was fine--great shower. Staff was friendly and very helpful. We enjoyed a nice breakfast, on the enclosed porch. Location is excellent. We parked at the hotel (free parking) and walked to restaurants and shops--at most a five minute walk. We have nieces at UNH and will definitely be staying at the Hotel Portsmouth again.

Review 105:Didn't like our view of the parking lot. Needed a desk lamp because it was very dark in room.

Review 106:Loved the cozy bed and decor. Staff was wonderful. I am gluten free and they provide a yummy gluten free option(s) for breakfast. Loved common areas. They provided ipads and speakers in room. Great cleansing products. Quiet rooms. Just loved it overall.

Review 107:Hotel was quaint and tastefully decorated. Staff was extremely accommodating and helpful. If you're visiting Portsmouth, this is the place to stay!

Review 108:We arrived before the 3:00 pm check in time and decided to see if we could check in early which they were more than happy to do since the room was ready. At check out time they extended their hospitality by letting us park in their parking lot while we continued to enjoy historic Portsmouth.

Review 109:Rooms were a little Spartan - exquisite style at the expense of features that make staying in a hotel room comfortable or a treat i.e. extra toiletries, hooks for towels, reading light, surface to set things down on. Breakfast could have been a little dressed up as well.

Review 110:Tastefully decorated Comfortable beds Clean, clean, clean Cozy common rooms for late night gathering, chatting Very conveniently located, walking distance to "downtown" Adequate continental breakfast Parking Quiet

Review 111:The room is a little small for the price and breakfast is pretty skimpy. I wouldn't go here if you're simply in town for business (maybe try the Sheraton) but for that special someone it's wonderful.

Review 112:The Hotel Portsmouth is in an absolutely terrific location; which was important with how cold it was! The hotel is a charming inn (opened in the late 1800s) but feels modern, warm and inviting.

Review 113:The washroom and sink area are a bit tight.

Review 114:The hotel facilities are excellent and proximity to centre of city is great. We could easily walk to all facilities thus leaving car parked. Very easy to find

Review 115:all good

Review 116:a really nice hotel and a good sized clean, beautifully furnished room . helpful staff.private parking . nice lobby rooms too . the i pad in the room preloaded with useful information on restaurants was really good. loved the luxury feel for what was a very reasonable price. portsmouth is a really nice place to stay and wander around in . tempted to come back to portsmouth just to stay here. probably the nicest hotel we have ever stayed in the usa and europe

Review 117:The staff were extremely helpful. We loved the complimentary use of the ipad in the room. We received a complimentary upgrade to a lovely room. It was within easy walking distance of the centre of Portsmouth.

Review 118:Nothing all was good

Review 119:Excellent room. Very nice public areas and good breakfast facilities. The hotel was in a very convenient location and staff were very helpful with an excellent recommendation for dinner.
