Reviews for Hotel Carlton

Review 1:check out at 7:15am but no staff was there, luckily someone arrived before we missed the train

Review 2:friendly and helpful staff who explains the city with enthusiasm clean and spacious room

Review 3:After abandoning our plans to stay in Brussels, we opted to stay in Ghent. What a GREAT decision!! First, you can get on a train at the Brussels airport and go directly to Ghent with no change of train. The Hotel Carlton was a perfect choice. It it about 300 meters from the train station. It is not the typical "near the train station" hotel. Though small, it is very clean with spacious, quiet rooms. It is operated by two delightful brothers, both of whom speak flawless English--Jeffrey and Steven. Jeffrey sat down with us and laid out a scenic route for our walk into the lovely Ghent city centre, recommended great selections for our lunches (chez Rene) and dinners (Belga Queen and Cafe Europa)--and they even kindly took care of sending us something inadvertently left behind. Being close to the train station also makes short trips to Brugge and/or Antwerp very easy. The walk to the city centre was pleasant and not too far--and walking back to the hotel after dinner in the city centre very safe. We highly recommend the Carlton Hotel.

Review 4:A very minor point was that the bathroom looked a little tired.

Review 5:The staff were incredibly helpful and friendly, breakfast was very good value and the hotel was located five minutes from Ghent station and also five minutes from the nearest tram stop. We were there for the Davis Cup at the Expo centre but also explored the lovely city of Ghent and this hotel was in the perfect position for us.

Review 6:Room could have been warmer but I never asked for a heater or I'm sure they'd have provided one! Wasn't in the room enough for it to annoy me that much!

Review 7:Staff were lovely, breakfast was fab and it was just an all round simple and lovely place to stay.

Review 8:The gentleman at the front desk so very friendly. We arrived early and we were planning to drop off our bags and go to our convention. Luckily, we were able to check into our room right away. Our room was HUGE! If you practice yoga, this is the perfect hotel for you!

Review 9:Staff were really friendly and helpful. We arrived around 11 to leave our bags but our room was nearly ready so they gave us free coffee and cake and chatted about Ghent while we waited. There was a kettle and tea and coffee in our room, plus complimentary flat and sparkling water - not common in Europe. We chose this hotel as it was very close to the station and we had an early train. It was a pleasant walk to the town centre, or an easy tram ride.

Review 10:The bed in my room was not very comfortable, i think it was just a little bit old, i could feel the metal springs inside.

Review 11:Very friendly staff (they were very friendly and helpful, it is easy to see that they are a big family not just bosses and workers), convenient location (all the buses, trams and train station is nearby), pretty big room with everything I needed, good quality of breakfast.

Review 12:Noise from the lift

Review 13:Most friendly and helpful hotel staff I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Nicely equipped room with balcony and lovely breakfast options.

Review 14:Excellent stuff, the best I've seen in a long time. Very friendly and helpful about the city, transport, everything. Hotel is small but cosy, nice room. Location very close to train station and 30 minutes walking from city centre. Own parking garage.

Review 15:Nothing

Review 16:Lovely four day stay while attending Davis Cup. Super friendly staff, excellent breakfast and beautifully warm hotel with abundant hot water. The Hotel Carlton is owned and run by Jeffrey and Steve, who are hands on in the running the hotel. Breakfast is excellent with an extensive menu, loved the fresh orange juice. My room was large with very comfortable bed, 2 arm chairs, small table, mini bar and TV. Complementary still and fizzy water, great selection of teas and coffee and even little biscuits :) all of which, including water are replenished daily. Bathroom with bath, shower, hairdryer, shower caps, soap, shower gel, body cream and even a box of tissues. Map and guide of Ghent supplied and can buy 10 ticket for tram or bus at reception. Everyone at hotel was super friendly and nothing was to much trouble. Will definitely recommend to family and friends and will be back when weather warmer to explore Ghent, Brugge etc all which are easy to travel to from Ghent St Pieter's station a few minutes walk from hotel.

Review 17:Staff extremely friendly, welcoming and helpful. I booked a room at the last minute to see Davis Cup in Ghent, and was very pleasantly surprised by the hotel when I arrived.

Review 18:nothing.

Review 19:The location was really near a station and tram stops so very useful for getting around. The hotel was clean and comfy and was very well kept. The staff were brilliant- over the 2 days we were there we met 4 staff members ll of them were friendly and polite and very helpful- over and above normal service.

Review 20:Geoffrey, Stephen and the staff are always most welcoming and helpful. The rooms are well appointed and comfortable. The steady updating of the hotel keeps it fresh and moving forward. The hotel is perfectly situated for our few days in Gent.

Review 21:Because the hotel is out of the city centre, the price is a little on the high side/

Review 22:Very friendly service and fantastic breakfast. Big modern comfortable rooms.

Review 23:Time stay was too short... we will come back

Review 24:High qualified Staf, well organised and great services. Very good bed and exstreamly quit at the room. Sanitary facilities clean and sufficient, private parking. Top located and public transport near by with short time interval. Breakfast continental but with fresh ingredients and very polite Staf and services. Anyway, if you wana overnight at Ghent, this Hotel we recommand very highly. Actually more than 3 stars worth.

Review 25:Nothing - for the price the hotel is pretty faultless.

Review 26:Super place to stay! Very friendly staff, decent sized rooms, excellent breakfast and a great location. The tram stop is around the corner where the tram will take you straight into town in a matter of minutes ( a pleasant 20-25 minute walk otherwise) - travel card from reception. Railway station is 3 minutes walk away. Breakfast in newly refurbished breakfast bar is great. The whole place has a nice relaxed air to it and the room we had was nice and quiet. Highly recommended hotel.

Review 27:Helpful, friendly staff. Lovely breakfast. Nice size room and very comfortable bed. Very close to rail station for people arriving/departing by rail.

Review 28:My only minor complaint, and that's very minor, is that it's a bit far from the historic center. But getting to the center is no problem, there's plenty of public transport options

Review 29:Service was exceptional, very friendly staff

Review 30:We spent 4 very enjoyable nights at the Carlton Hotel. Everyone was always friendly and helpful and the room was clean, cosy and comfortable, Breakfast offered great variety and was delicious, The hotel is conveniently located a short walk from the train station and the tram which takes you into the centre of town in just a few minutes.

Review 31:None, really.

Review 32:The hospitality extended by Stephen and his staff was exceptional. He gave us valuable suggestions based on our time spent in the city which saved us a lot of time. His brief on the history of the city/country was much better than the ones given by local tour guides.

Review 33:Nothing was bad

Review 34:Everything was great, I wasn't expecting a 3* hotel to be such a lovely property. The staff is fantastic as well and helps to improve your experience.

Review 35:Absolutely brilliant, great location close to the main train station and the trams into the main part of Gent, it only took 10mins into town. Despite being so close to the facilities the hotel is in a tree lined very quiet street. The owners and staff are fantastic, so helpful. Clean everything , variety of breakfast the whole feel of the place is a home from home. I will recommend it to everyone.100%

Review 36:Rooms: It's a bit small. Balcony oversized in comparison with the rooms, if at all possible; increase room size, decrease balcony size. Breakfast: Serve normal biological yoghurt in a bottle f.e. instead of supermarket packages with small amounts of yoghurt.

Review 37:Luxury, service, hospitality.

Review 38:Great location, 3 mins from station; 7 mins from Ghent ICC. Absolutely delightful staff. I booked late and got a triple room, the only one available - when they saw it was only me, they reduced the price and threw in breakfast! Hot water, good towels, comfy bed. My new fave hotel in Ghent.

Review 39:The corridor that led to the rooms were quite small, but the same applies to most hotels in Europe.

Review 40:The front desk staff was superb. The 3 bed room was also very big. Location wise it was close to the central station.

Review 41:A little bit expensive breakfast.

Review 42:Situated very close to tram station but also in a walking distance (1,6 km) from the city center. Large room. Very friendly staff. They gave us suggestions for sight seeing.

Review 43:We stayed at a time when the breakfast buffet was undergoing renovations, however, we were provided with a breakfast picnic!small

Review 44:We found the management team to be extremely helpful and friendly even to the extent of providing us with a prepurchased tram ticket.

Review 45:Nothing, truly!

Review 46:The staff were so helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. The room was spacious, comfortable and spotlessly clean. The number of languages spoken by the staff was amazing. The breakfast room was being refurbished when we were there. It will be wonderful when finished I'm sure. So, they could not serve breakfast - hence my score. What they did do was arrange for guests to take breakfast in a neighbouring hotel. Or, if, like us, you didn't want to do that, they gave you a breakfast "pack " free of charge which was excellent! It seemed that they really cared about your experience of their hotel and of Ghent.

Review 47:Far away from historical city center - around 30-40 minutes by walking, but tram stop is near hotel (the last one is at 11:30 pm). Wifi is slow.

Review 48:Very pleasant staff. The clerk gave useful tips about the city and could help with any requests and questions. The room was big and clean with a nice view.

Review 49:Hotel is easy walking distance from train station and trams to central Ghent. Rooms are surprisingly roomy and modern. Staff is very friendly and helpful, even offering cost effective tram passes. Wifi very good and easy. Breakfast area being renovated while we were there, so breakfast at a nearby hotel or a free "breakfast box" was offered instead. We were very pleased with the hotel and recommend it.

Review 50:We chose this hotel as it was close to the train station, had on-site parking and was reasonably priced including breakfast and parking fees. When we arrived Stephen gave us a full overview of Ghent, including where the sights were and how we could get to them. Breakfast was plentiful, offering a great selection and freshly cooked hot food. Lovely room, great sleep and helpful staff!

Review 51:Kitchen was being refurbished at the time of our stay. Breakfast bag provided which was good but meant we couldn't give a high opinion of the breakfast.

Review 52:Staff extremely friendly and helpful. Domestic staff very obliging. I would highly recommend this hotel.

Review 53:Several minor matters: 1. The toilet seat was high; (I'm 178 cm/ 5 ft 10 tall.) 2. I wanted to take a bath but the hot water was somehow brownish. Not sure if this is normal, but it did deter me from bathing. The cold water was crystal clear. 3. There were some suspicious white powders at the bottom of the kettle provided. Please clean it. 4. No air-con. But the fan compensated it to a certain extent. 5. Anti-theft hangers made it impossible to hang hand-washed clothes anywhere except inside the wardrobe.

Review 54:Just to name a few: 1. Very nice and helpful staff. Got a very detailed introduction to the history and different neighbourhoods of the town during check-in. Appreciated it a lot. 2. Very spacious, comfortable and clean room. Gosh, I did not even want to leave the hotel for sightseeing! 3. Laundry service was more than handy. 4. Free packaged breakfast that included a croissant, yogurt, a banana, a bottle of orange juice and a bottle of water. Coffee was also served. Down-to-earth and adequate, but it seems that it's supplied free of charge only because paid breakfast is not available at the moment due to the renovation work of the breakfast room. 5. Impeccable location: Less than 3 minutes away from Gent-St-Pieters station on foot and a couple of minutes away from the nearest tram stop. The tram will take you to the old town in 10 minutes.

Review 55:Well it was hot in the room in early August due to the lack of air conditioning. However, you will find a fan inside your room (ours was in the wardrobe. Still was too hot for me in the nights as I like cool air conditioned rooms, consider this if you are like me. PS. Do not open the windows fully, especially in the darkenss. The light inside the room attracted mosquitos (or something similiar) and two huge bugs which looked like bedbugs,so we had to kill them (the bodies wire size of my thumb nail, so it was not pleasent killing exp.)

Review 56:The staff is extremely friendly and very helpful. We loved them, it's almost like staying at your friends house. The location is superb especially for those who would like to use Gent city as a base for travelling to other cities by train (the station is like 3 minutes walk). It is also very easy to reach the historical center 15-20 minutes walk or much faster by tram.

Review 57:Very friendly staff, nice and cozy hotel. Good location pretty close to the train station. A bit off from the city center, whereas there are trams nearby, it takes 10 min to get to the center.

Review 58:Everything was great!

Review 59:The staff were very kind and helpful in everything! The rooms are large and comfortable and everything was clean. We liked it so much we extended our stay and used it as a base for visiting Antwerp, Brugge, and Lille as it is centrally located to all of them. Anything we needed was provided with a smile and at their earliest convenience! I would recommend this Hotel to anyone! The proximity to the train station made it easy to get to and easy to get into the city center with the tram.

Review 60:Nothing but an aircon would have been good so we could close the windows

Review 61:Staff were amazing best ever. Not just one but everyone we dealt with. Room was large, had fridge, kettle good bed. Close to the train great for an overnight stop & tram line is close if you don't want to walk to the centre.

Review 62:My two girlfriends and I could not have been happier with our hotel choice. All the staff, especially the brothers who own the hotel, were just SO lovely and accommodating! They made such an effort to make sure that we had the best time in Ghent, and were always up for a chat. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel in the future and we will be back again.

Review 63:Second time I've stayed there as a group, excellent, very modern family run hotel. Have there own secure indoor parking which suited our motorcycles perfectly, cannot recommend enough.

Review 64:After searching the internet for a place to stay in Gent, came across the Carlton Hotel Gent situated 5 minutes walk from Gent St. Peters Railway Station. After reading reviews on the hotel we booked this for our 5 nights holiday and so pleased we did. The two brothers who own and run the hotel were perfect hosts and offered advice on places to visit and would go out of their way to help, same applied to other hotel staff. The rooms are spacious,as described and well kept with comfortable beds. The breakfast is a must, you will not be disappointed. City Centre is within easy access by tram,10 minutes ride, there are several stops nearby. Apart from visiting the historical City Centre of Gent and its interesting market days with music being played in the background, don't miss out on the City Park just up the road from the hotel also the nearby College Arboretum and grounds.

Review 65:1. no safe in room 2. the usual problem with doonas. They are too hot. Option of blankets would be good. We took the covers off and used them.

Review 66:1. large room, three times bigger than our room in Amsterdam! 2. two types of water supplied 3. friendly, helpful staff 4. good breakfast

Review 67:Gracious hosts, Stephen and Jeffrey. Keen hoteliers who are passionate about Ghent. Large rooms with complimentary Carlton water (flat and carbonated). Superb location (close to both the train station and tram).

Review 68:Nothing - all good

Review 69:Great location and close to amenities and easy to get to the centre. Staff were great and very welcoming and helpful. Good to have car parking available as well

Review 70:nothing

Review 71:The young lady who checked us in could not have been more pleasant. she came from behind the desk to show us a detailed map of the city and took the time to point out where we should go and what to see. She also recommended a restaurant that ended up being the best meal we had in 8 days in belgium. The hotel was located 3 blocks from the train station and was clean and nicely appointed. I believe it was my favorite place that we stayed all wee and was the most affodable. i would easily recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking to spend time in Ghent. i do wish i could remember the young ladies name because she deserves a personal thank you for her customer service skills. thanks,

Review 72:We decided to stay near train/bus station easy walk with luggage to hotel. The compromise is then a long walk or tram into centre. We bought 1 day pass (5 E) as we wanted to return to hotel during day Spacious very clean room with large windows. Good bed and a first two pillows each! We didnt have breakfast as we wanted sleep in and left very early the next day On top of the need for local knowldge were to eat etc we had the need for assistance with travel plans and lost property and as has been expressed by others the assistence we received from Steven was unhesitating when we werent even booked in and continued during our visit and followed up by Jeffrey thanks guys. Friendly, professional, genuine hospitality.

Review 73:The staff made you welcome and were very helpful from the moment you entered the hotel. We were able to park our car in a secure garage. Rooms were a good size and very comfortable. Good breakfast.

Review 74:A little bit noisy fridge.

Review 75:Extremely friendly and helpful staff, very nice cosy room with comfortable beds, everything clean and in working order, free drinking water in the room.

Review 76:The remoteness from the city centre could be a problem but in good weather it provides an excellent walk. Regular trams are an alternative.

Review 77:The staff, the rooms and the excellent breakfast

Review 78:Ask the staff about restaurants nearby as sometimes need to walk a bit.

Review 79:Loved the friendly staff giving great tips on Gent and having tram tickets available. also loved the fresh orange juice for breakfast. Room good, bathroom a little tight.

Review 80:Hmm, Nothing really. Even the sun was bright.

Review 81:Fantastic place.had room 602, and it was wonderful. Room was clean and well designed. Fantastic terrace and so clean.Staff are well dressed, polite and so helpful. We are already planning to go back.

Review 82:Big, comfortable room; excellent service; fabulous breakfast. First time that I have received an edible flower served on my scrambled eggs - cooked to order too. It was an unexpected experience.

Review 83:Excellent explanation of Ghent when we checked in, to help us tour the city in the best way possible. Steven took so much time to explain the city, draw the areas of interest on the map and give also some very good updates about the history of the city. Very delighted.

Review 84:Friendliness and helpfulness of the owners, Jeffrey and Steve, as well as the breakfast staff; 3 minute walk to the train station and yet hotel is on a safe and lovely street; extra touches in the room such as an orchid and specialty teas; size and comfort of the room; exceptional and reasonably priced breakfast; etc.

Review 85:This lovely hotel, has excellent staff who are on hand to help you with anything, including tram tickets. The location is also excellent, just 2 minutes from Gint St Peter's Station, and a few minutes from the Historic Centre by tram, or 30 minutes by a leisurely walk through parkland and by the river. Very Clean, large rooms, shops and places to eat nearby.

Review 86:Absolutely nothing.

Review 87:An extremely friendly welcome from all the staff and owners. Fabulous room with everything you could possibly want. I thoroughly recommend this hotel and will definitely use it when anywhere near Gent.

Review 88:none.

Review 89:Staffs are really kind, friendly, and helpful, and introduced us how to travel in Gent in details. The room is big and comfortable, and offer free water in room. We had a great experience in this hotel.

Review 90:Parking out front a bit of a challenge to find a spot at times. Hot water pressure in shower was very, very low. Passed on breakfast due to the high price.

Review 91:Large comfortable room and very helpful staff.

Review 92:No drawers, poor access to the wardrobe, no place for cosmetics, no place to hang towels. Reception open only to 11pm

Review 93:Near the railway station. Good access to city centre with tram. Quiet, friendly staff. Free mineral water in the room. You can buy tram tickets at the reception without commision.:

Review 94:-very attentive staff - provided very detailed information with a map about places of interest in Gent -amazing breakfast (fresh squeezed orange juice, eggs cooked on request, good coffee, fresh vegetables / fruit) and even went to the bakery to get very tasty gluten free bread for one of the family members :) -spacious room with kettle and tea / coffee

Review 95:It is not located in central Ghent, however it is a cheap taxi or 25 minute walk

Review 96:The hotel is cosy and tastefully furnished. The staff are welcoming and helpful. The value for money is excellent. It is close to the train station, in a pleasant neighbourhood

Review 97:he best-produced breakfast in years - despite expecting just a continental one, my breakfast was prepared to order, with total professionalism, personal interest and enthusiasm and most attractively served - even with flowers adorning the scrambled egg, mushroom and parsley!

Review 98:I can't list a single thing I was not happy with

Review 99:the room was spacious and very comfortable and the staff were all very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was lovely and we were even able to have our Pug stay with us at no extra charge. A really great hotel that I would stay at again and recommend to anyone.

Review 100:Nothing,not much choices of restaurants in the surrounding

Review 101:Few minutes walk from the train station, quite community, spacious room, facilities are pretty new, very friendly and helpful receptionist, offer free map and free mineral water. 10-15 mins to city center by tram. Will recommend to friends who will visit Gent!

Review 102:Common space (corridors, stairs, a bar) is rather claustrophobic. The reception closes at 11 p.m. which may cause some logistic problems for guests.

Review 103:My room was spatious and clean. The hotel is conveniently locatied close to the train station (but no noise from the station's operation could be heard) and a few steps from the tram line to the city centre. Nice and ready to help staff; fast check-in/check-out procedure.

Review 104:Fantastic service. We arrived late, after most restaurants had closed. We were greeted with a smile and a room upgrade to the top floor suite. We were recommended a late opening restaurant but were too tired to venture out so were given a complimentary beer and some fruit. The hotel is 2 mins walk from the train station which was just what we wanted. You can take the tram into the historical centre from just around the corner and be there in 10 mins - very easy and the hosts gave clear directions and sold us 1/2 price tram tickets!

Review 105:Nothing not to like............... see 'what did you like' box!!

Review 106:Hotel itself exceptionally clean and well laid out, close to the train station, arrangements flexible, we needed to cancel a room and breakfasts and this was no problem at all.......but most of all the people helpful, kind, efficient...............just brilliant, seriously just brilliant (I do not do reviews!!)

Review 107:The only tiny negative was that 2 of the 3 hooks on the back of the bathroom door were missing.

Review 108:Friendly and helpful staff - at check-in, we were immediately given a map of the city and talked through the main areas to visit, as well as how to get to the nearest tram stop. You can get tram tickets from reception, which will then be added to your bill - a wonderful and convenient service that we greatly appreciated. Spacious triple room with comfortable twin beds. Quite a lot of English language TV channels. Great location - a few minutes walk from the train station, and round the corner from the nearest tram stop that will take you right into the city centre. Free wifi with a strong signal. Tea making facilities with a nice range of different teas in posh teabags!

Review 109:Location is very near Ghent St Pieter s station but a good 2-3km away from the city center. However, the tram to the city is very convenient and very frequent

Review 110:The friendliest staff we've ever met in a hotel! Brothers Jeffery and Steven (not sure of spelling) were genuinely friendly and welcoming. Made our stay really enjoyable. We highly recommend this hotel.

Review 111:very narrow corridor connecting elavator lobby to rooms. Corridor carpet doesnt look good. however this will not prevent me from coming again.

Review 112:Kind staff who really pay attention to your needs. Spacious room with excellent bed. excellent breakfast. Small hotel although certainly value for money.

Review 113:My two best friends and I stayed here over the New Year and for my birthday. On arrival, after a very long and tiring journey, we had the warmest welcome from Jeffery - one of the hotel's owners. It was like long lost friends reuniting! He offered us tea and coffee and then sat us down and chatted to us about the hotel, local places to go, things to do and life in general. All of this was done with genuine interest in us having the best experience. We liked him so much, we nicknamed him 'Jeffers' The hotel was very clean and our room was warm and welcoming. There were a few minor snags with the room (i.e. a light was out and the bathroom door didn't have a lock), but didn't effect our stay in anyway. The beds were so comfortable and the pillows were amazingly soft and perfect- like giant marshmallows, just not sticky :) The tea, coffee and water were replaced daily and linen was fresh every day. There was no safe in the room, however we were assured by Jeffers that his staff had worked for them a long time and were completely trustworthy. I'm very glad to report that this was the case and all of our valuables were very safe! We had breakfast the first morning, however at €12 it was expensive for what it was. There was a continental spread and a choice of eggs, however the coffee was available throughout the day, for free. Jeffers' brother, Not Jeffers (we later found out was called Stephen) was not as handsome as Jeffers and not as jovial, but very pleasant and helpful despite Jeffers being much more attractive. (This is a running competition between the brothers as they play jokes on each other. Another example of this is when guests ask one of them the other's name, they will give a completely random and wrong name) I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough. If we ever plan another trip to Ghent, we will definitely be staying here... if they will have us back!

Review 114:All staff are friendly and kindly people. Jeffrey is a person who tryies to solve all your requierements. The hotel is excellent, in a quite place, near all you want to know. Breakfast is excellent. You perceive that the hotel is run by its owners. I think it is a very important extra bonus.

Review 115:Location. Next to the train station but a little bit far from the city centre. However you can get the centre by tram 1 (just 6 stops).

Review 116:People in reception was very kind all the time. Breakfast very good with freshly squeezed orange juice. Room big and comfortable.

Review 117:The receptionists are extremely helpful. The spacious room. The cleaness is impecable. The breakfast had the freash orange juice and homemade omelette. I enjoyed everything and every moment in this hotel

Review 118:Best check-in ever had with great explanations of the city. Steven and Jeffrey are really great. I really recommend this accomodation for different point of views. Close to the Sint-Pieters station, old part of Gent well connected by Tram 1.

Review 119:You need to take the tram to get to the centre, but this wasn't a problem.

Review 120:Wonderful, spacious room for three, the amenities, the Rituals scent, the bathroom, level of cleanliness
