Reviews for America's Best Inn Portsmouth
Review 1:Breakfast was minimal, room was not as clean as I had hoped. Felt we were being rushed out by cleaning staff on day of checkout. Would not stay again, wouldn't have stayed if it wasn't for the deal we received.
Review 2:Convenient location to downtown without being in the busy center. Got a really great package through Booking.com
Review 3:Not really a bad experience but the room we stayed in the furniture was quite worn.
Review 4:Location very convenient, continental breakfast, clean room, comfortable.
Review 5:The maid never came to change towels, empty trash, put toilet paper during our stay...disappointing!
Review 6:location near services, warm welcome. We go there at least once a year.
Review 7:I read the reviews before I booked this hotel and was a bit worried because some reviews were quite negative. It was an excellent hotel and I would recommend to anyone not wanting to pay for a hotel downtown.
Review 8:The taxi company we used to go out was closed when we tried them for a ride back to hotel around 2AM. Fortunately we had a friend who could drive us back, but having a reliable shuttle/taxi service for events on weekends that can run late would be ideal.
Review 9:It was VERY affordable and we'll probably be planning future nights out with friends in Portsmouth if these types of rates are still available. Will definitely stay again!
Review 10:Hot air heating ,small breakfast area. Very red neck type of guests , work contractors
Review 11:The hotel is well located being $10 taxi from the malls and a 18 min walk into Portsmouth. The place is dated a little old and the heating is electric which is either too hot when on or freezing when off. The bed was OK the linen was clean but the thin sheetsand lack of a quilt ment the noisy hot air heating needed to be on all the time. Breakfast was poor with a dinning area the size of a toilet so we ate at the nearby dinner or walked into Portsmouth , which was a lovely walk
Review 12:walls are paper thin and not much for blankets on the bed
Review 13:The location was very good to get to both Portsmouth and Kittery. Very good continental breakfast
Review 14:Lobby and hallway stunk of cigarette smoke. Clerk smoking outside in front of door. Lobby steps cluttered with crushed breakfast food on checking at 11pm!
Review 15:Location and price
Review 16:Staff were very pleasant, helpful and friendly especially Will and Robbin. They also were happy and engaging with us as guests.Fresh cookies awaited us as we return from shopping each day - what a nice touch! A group of four gals have been going here for three years at this location as it is convenient, located close to Fox Run Mall, Christmas Tree Store and Ruby Tuesday!
Review 17:The bathroom wasn't clean. Mainly the shower. Hair in the tub, in the grout, the drain. The walls are SUPER thin. A group check-in VERY late (1am maybe?) totally disrespectful with slamming doors yelling down the hall, etc. Breakfast was a joke. Just cereal ands not very appetizing pastries. Ate at the Roundabout a LOT for the two days we were visiting NH.
Review 18:The man at the counter at check-in was SO nice. He was also there when we went to bed AND when we checked out! Overworked? Possibly. BUT, he was extremely nice.
Review 19:The staff was wonderful, very welcoming and friendly. The bed and pillows were nice and firm, and the room even had a microwave and a refrigerator. While slightly outdated, it was clean and everything we needed. It was a bit out of walking distance from downtown, but the room was >$100 cheaper than downtown hotels. For what we paid, the room was great!
Review 20:Mattresses and pillows were pretty uncomfortable. The shower are looked like if need an upgrade
Review 21:The staff is always friendly and efficient. The location is great. The room itself is great.
Review 22:Some of the furniture could have been replaced or updated (desk in room was broken, chipped) the desk chair was ripped and very worn, the sitting chair was not comfortable. Fridge was not cold at all. used a cooler.
Review 23:great price, comfortable beds, continental breakfast was a plus, staff were very friendly, fast and easy check in and out. easy access off the highway and very close to the downtown entertainment.
Review 24:Clean hotel; excellent value. Best part was the location very close to the Roundabout Diner; great food. Easy on/off to highway. All around great choice.
Review 25:One window would not close properly which meant a constant draught all night even with the curtains closed. Damaged window spoilt our stay as the room was cold in the night.
Review 26:Location good for travels.
Review 27:There is a smoking floor and the entire building reeks of cigarettes. The bathroom was not clean, had hair in the shower. Staff was not friendly, nor warm. Did not greet us when we arrived. Tried to charge me more than I was quoted from booking.com, however they did correct it.
Review 28:The hotel needs to hire someone to staff the breakfast room. The trash was overflowing and items were missing by 8:30. The front desk clerk did not check to see if our room was ready for early check-in and would not (could not?) hold our bags.
Review 29:Facility is close to Portsmouth and includes a light breakfast.
Review 30:Smoking in building. Terrible lobby smell. Construction worker guests smoking, beer drinking and cursing in parking lot.
Review 31:Special discount at Warren Lobster Restaurant.
Review 32:Breakfast wasn't that good but ok for the price.
Review 33:Clean rooms and easily accessible from the interstate. We stayed here just for a night on our trip to Maine, so we didnt really spend much time here.
Review 34:The king I booked months in advance was not available. (Booking.com was blamed.) The top drawer fell to the floor when I opened it to put clothes inside. The receptacle in the bathroom was dead.
Review 35:Good location. Convenient to the Interstate.
Review 36:I'd expect a bit better breakfast given the rates. Also the breakfast room was very small; there wasn't enough space for all guests. The most disturbing is the fact they charged me twice and I can't reach anyone to get it fixed...
Review 37:Good hotel, a bit too expensive I think. But it could be caused by the Portsmouth area location.
Review 38:It looked like the latest upgrades to the room were superficial. The building may be up for a major overhaul.
Review 39:The location was convenient to Pease Tradeport and downtown Portsmouth (major Route 1 rotary and access to major roads at the front door). Walking around was easy. The staff were easy-going and accommodating.
Review 40:Thin walls; we could clearly hear people in neighboring rooms talking, slamming their doors as they came and went. Desk lamp did not work; no plug available as outlet was taken for fridge and microwave.
Review 41:Continental breakfast.
Review 42:Very loud. Our room was near the lobby and we heard every noise. The bathtub stopper was broken so we had to hold it open with a shampoo bottle cap so the tub would drain. The shower curtain rod was broken, so the curtain didn't close all the way.
Review 43:Front desk staff VERY friendly and helpful!
Review 44:Any inn that bakes and serves chocolate chip cookies everyday is good in my book.. Five minutes from Downtown Portsmouth and right near the highway.. Close to restaurants, breakfast spots etc... I'd stay again
Review 45:Cafeteria area was not well maintained, always a full garbage and crumbs all over the place. The young kid who took care of it didn't care.
Review 46:Clean, updated, comfortable
Review 47:Smelly rooms due to no exhaust system in the bathroom. There was a stench of mold from the bathroom as soon as someone would take a shower. I don't see how a hotel could be built without vents in the bathroom. Smell of smoke in the basement where the exercise facility was located.
Review 48:location and chocolate chip cookies at reception (only two would be put out at a time)
Review 49:I did not have a bad experience. However, the elevator was slow and hot, and the one housekeeping staff member that I dealt with did not really seam to realize that the convenience of the guests was the priority. (I had to step over a huge bag of trash that obstructed the narrow hall, while she watched, and when I returned a while later, the trash bag was still there, and I had to step over it again. Good thing I am young and healthy.)
Review 50:Location was great, as was the desk staff. The coffee at the breakfast nook was surprisingly good, and the orange juice was Real juice, as opposed to the watered down stuff one usually gets at more expensive hotels.
Review 51:Seems dated. Not a great value for price. In fairness though it could be it was a higher seasonal rate.
Review 52:Convenience to highway. Wifi. Good coffee. Friendly staff.
Review 53:Well they offer coffee 24/7 it was cold. Breakfast is served from 6am to 10am. At 6:08 still the cold coffee from the night before. I asked the front desk and he looked at his watch and stated well it will be 6 mins I'll get after it. Rounded the corner unlocked the fridge and pulled out a box of cereals and that was breakfast. After waiting the 6-8 mins I had coffee. No attendant, you have the overnight guy from behind the counter in flip flops coming around making your coffee. Not the Hampton inn for sure. Makes them look like a luxury resort. This was like the motel 6. Sadly enough a couple changes and it wouldnt be bad. Some fresh fruit and a pleasant smile goes along way. I felt I was getting help from the maintenance man. Personalty of a fence post!
Review 54:Will,the gentleman checking us in was the best! The Wi-Fi was ok. That's it.
Review 55:The showers need bath mats for safety or they need something to hold on to getting in and out. My mom was afraid to take a shower now that she is older.
Review 56:The staff was extremely helpful.
Review 57:i didn't like that the room next to me kept slamming doors from 10pm until 2pm and when I called the front the desk attendant just said that the door closes heavy. Really? The people must've gone in and out over 30 times in the 4 hours as well as playing loud music and arguing. I wish the attendant had taken my complaint seriously. In addition, a continental breakfast was advertised and at 8 am they had out bagels and cereal Oj and apple juice and coffee. I was expecting maybe pancakes or at least eggs, something hot, so I was disappointed that all I had was Apple juice and coffee.
Review 58:The rooms were nice and so were the bathrooms and televisions
Review 59:I booked two rooms for my best friends bachelorette party this past weekend. The price was great and it's decently located outside of downtown. When we returned back to our rooms Saturday evening we discovered that someone had broken into one of our rooms (ground level) via the window. We waited for 45 minutes for the staff to find a way into the room because it has been dead bolted from the inside. The next morning we went to report what had happened and what was missing to the front desk and our concerns were completely ignored. We were berated by the front desk clerk, Robbin and asked to leave and never come back. We were never offered any sort of compensation for the cost of the rooms. We were not even offered a simple "I'm sorry" from the staff for the incident. We were told the general manager was on vacation and nothing could be done for us. Needless to say, with the way we were treated as paying guests at this establishment we will not be booking another room here any time soon
Review 60:The hotel itself isn't anything spectacular but for the price it's more than fine.
Review 61:The room was dirty and gross! The bed was unmade and untucked. The sheets looked used and there was makeup on a pillow. It was disgusting! Looked like a used room that never got cleaned.
Review 62:Nothing
Review 63:Almost no toilet paper on roll (no refills), room noisy and walls thin, threadbare/scuffed furniture and stained draperies. A little shabby.
Review 64:Wonderful, cheerful staff.
Review 65:Breakfast really bad. They did say they were having problems at the time (for some odd reason) but it was just a sugar-fest!! fairly basic and old-fashioned but only what you would expect at this price in this area
Review 66:Good value for that area. Worked well as a base to explore the South Maine coast. Facilities are all good and very functional. Basics done very well - clean, showers good, TV channels good when required for the kids! Great wifi.
Review 67:If was difficult getting out of the property. This is nothing negative about the inn. It is just how the building is situated on the lot.
Review 68:Staff was very friendly and efficient.
Review 69:Upon arrival room wasn't as clean as it should be but staff were quick to act on complaint...end result everything was satisfactory.
Review 70:Beds comfortable & staff friendly
Review 71:Unfortunately breakfast was not well represented do to some issues with local and state codes I think.
Review 72:Location was good, room clean and bed comfortable.
Review 73:The breakfast was disappointing. The coffee was cold and the muffins were stale
Review 74:The room was clean, The staff response was very good. The location was perfect
Review 75:Breakfast was cheap and hardly anything. They had a sign saying sorry for basic breakfast but was confused why they couldn't go to store and buy more.
Review 76:Great location. Place was clean and simple, yet room was bigger than I thought it would be.
Review 77:The breakfast wasn't the best. But I think there was some trouble with it when we were there. A bit far away from downtown.
Review 78:Cheap hotel in a quiet and calm area!
Review 79:Inside of this Inn, actually a run down motel, is dim. Everything seems coming from 70's, cheap materials and worn out. Hair left in the sink. Everything needs to be thrown in the dumpster. It's a place to show children what miserable and suffering living is like. I feel blessed there were no bedbugs.
Review 80:The room was in the basement. It was dark and damp and dirty. There was no toilet paper. The outlets didn't work. The bed skirt was ripped to shreds. The sheets looked unwashed as if the bed was just remade after use. And the worst part is that the bathroom was filled with ants. I took a video and showed it to the desk clerk. He was only allowed to reduce the fee by $35 and told me to call the general manager on Monday.
Review 81:The staff was very nice and tried to help
Review 82:whole bldg. smells of smoke beds are terrible air cond. control was not working cigarette ashes in ash tray and in waste basket sheets looked like never changed etc,etc checked out right away first and last time using A.B.I
Review 83:nothing
Review 84:Continental breakfast left a lot to be desired. Bedding felt tired and thin. The carpet in our room felt greasy and dirty. The pool was across a busy highway in a Holiday inn that guests are allowed to use.
Review 85:The staff was friendly and knowledgeable about the area. The towels were ample and thick. The bathroom was clean with good water pressure. The room was comfortable and quite.
Review 86:Breakfast was even less this time. Two days earlier they had at least cereal. That was all gone and it looked like they were restocking as things ran out. It was adequate for my needs, but most families would not be happy.
Review 87:Breakfast on first day at least had cereal. On the 2nd day breakfast was rice krispie treats and granola bars. Based on this, I wouldn't advertise breakfast is served.
Review 88:Comfortable room, clean, large bathroom.
Review 89:When we first walked in it smelt awful, like stale cigarette smoke. Apparently there is a smoking floor on the first level. Our room on the second floor didn't smell though!
Review 90:It wasn't clean enough. There was thick dust on the front of the air conditioner. The shower curtain had reddish mildew and should have been replaced. Room had a stale odor. Pillows were yellowish. Towel had a big ball of curled up hair on it and had to get a new one.
Review 91:It was quiet during the night , no noise
Review 92:We stayed is a smoking room as the hotel had overbooked and it was all that was left. I have never stayed in a room that smelled so bad before. We stayed two nights and when we got home everything from the inside of our luggage to our tooth brushes smelled like smoke. It was absolutely disgusting. We will never go back! There was no continental breakfast like even though it was included in our room rate and description!
Review 93:The staff was extremely nice. They have a discounted taxi service/agreement to downtown. Flat rate of $5.00 for a cab each way-- Good deal!
Review 94:If anything, the breakfast was sub par.
Review 95:Even though it was outside of town, the proximity to I-95 was perfect. The room was pretty big and the staff was excellent.
Review 96:Their "temporarily limited" free breakfast consisted of apple juice, dunkin d's coffee, muffins and some sort of nurturing/cereal bar. The towels made of looked clean, but didn't feel clean.
Review 97:Overall wasn't bad for less than hundred bucks in the area.
Review 98:Breakfast was pretty non-existent. Dunkin' coffee delivered late and packaged muffins and breakfast bars.
Review 99:Hotel was easy to find; it was clean and rooms were modernized. Bed was very comfortable. Parking plentiful. Easy to drive downtown from this location. Could use Holiday Inn pool for free (it was across the street). Excellent value for the money! Would definitely stay here again.
Review 100:The bed was not comfortable! No coffee make in the room.
Review 101:The location was good ! The breakfast was decent. Plenty of clean towels ! Not bad for the price!
Review 102:Let me preface by saying that I rarely write reviews unless I am absolutely compelled to do so.I booked this hotel because I was visiting friends in Portsmouth for the July 4th weekend and it was just a mile from their house. I also booked it because it's easily accessible via I-95 and located on Woodbury Ave, where a lot of restaurants and stores are nearby. My girlfriend (who stayed with me) and I were looking for a quiet and affordable place to sleep and relax before and after our Fourth of July adventures. We checked in for our two-night stay on Friday evening around 5 p.m. Within an hour and a half, we noticed the guests (in two adjoining rooms) across the hall were letting the door bang pretty frequently. I also noticed they have several small children, likely more than the maximum capacity. It was annoying, but I let patience prevail before heading to dinner for the night. When we returned, our neighbors to the left were being fairly loud (sounded like they were celebrating the holiday with a few beverages). I turned on the fan to drown out the noise and quickly passed out since I was exhausted. My girlfriend attests, unfortunately, that she heard them late into the night. We woke the next morning to hear our guests across the hall banging the door again. Now, I’m not talking about once every few hours, but rather, once every few minutes, sometimes more. As mentioned, they had a flock of little ones staying with them who probably didn’t know any better. The banging continued until I called the front desk to complain. The person I talked to said he’d speak with them. After enjoying the complementary breakfast and running an errand, my girlfriend and I returned a couple of hours later to notice that the two rooms across the hall were still letting the door bang. I called again — this time the front desk attendee seemed to recognize on my frustration and promised he would speak with them. I believe he did but cannot confirm.
Review 103:Very convenient location. Free parking, Wi-Fi and breakfast. Gym available.
Review 104:Stayed overnight on our way to Acadia National Park. Great value for your money, right off I-95 or Rt 1 and very close to the Kittery outlets! Breakfast area is very small !
Review 105:The bed was too soft, but some people may like it that way.
Review 106:I found the staff to be friendly and helpful. The room (other than the bed) was comfortable. The cookies are terrific!
Review 107:The room was aweful and smelt dreadful of cigarettes
Review 108:The original room given was a smoking room and it was dreadful beware.. We got moved to another smoking room which was an improvement but that's all.. You pay for what you get and id rather pay extra.. Breakfast was not even continental waste of time
Review 109:Worst bed in the history of beds!!!! also AC didn't work and it was about 100 degrees in the room, tried to move rooms but they said they were fully booked, so we had to deal with it and they did nothing for us
Review 110:The carpet in public areas was dirty. I am not a very good traveler when it comes to coping with hotels, and dirty carpet anywhere makes my stomach turn over.
Review 111:Some needs to Investagate a certain man who checks in people and istaking more monies than required. I would never recommend any one tostay there. Worst ever in my thirty years of travel.
Review 112:I only wish I had more time to spend here.
Review 113:Great location ,easy to find with first class staff. The price brought me here and would bring me back. The breakfast was simple with cereal and toast and muffins. However, whatever it takes to keep the price down for a solid nights sleep. Very clean also. The Hotel next door also has a pool and a lounge you can use by just showing your room key. Bravo.
Review 114:We were able to hear other customers in adjacent rooms as if they were actually in the room with us. The walls appeared to be paper thin. Woken up early in the am as a result of this.
Review 115:The front door is definitely not prepared for guests with baggage. The staff is not offering any help with baggage. The breakfast is veeeery poor.
Review 116:Good location, free car park, wi-fi in the room.
Review 117:As i was waiting at the counter another customer ended up getting their room for about $40 less than what I paid and when I asked for the discount I was told they had a special offer.
Review 118:We enjoyed our stay here. It was clean and convenient. The gentleman at the front desk was a joy to talk to and was very flexible and helpful. Definitely a good deal for the price.
Review 119:was cold in room, needed an xtra blanket but was our own issue we didnt go ask for one. breakfast first day was good but second day didnt have much.
Review 120:location, staff, yummy cookies room was clean would def return.
Review 121:They could have used a little Fabreeze. Also, the Portsmouth PD was there with a search warrant for one of the nearby rooms, so maybe just be careful late at night.
Review 122:There were warm, fresh baked cookies at the front when we checked in - it was such a nice touch! And the manager was hilarious, we had a great experience. Awesome beds.
Review 123:Hotel is 'sandwiched' between two busy roads - one a freeway. Rooms can can be rather noisy. Breakfast room is quite crowded - in some cases - there is no place tonsit.
Review 124:Staff is very helpful. Rooms are fine. Hotel is well priced.
Review 125:Strong smell of smoke Holes in walls of renovated room Horrible room temperature control (either on or off, cannot set an exact temp.)
Review 126:Great price Renovated rooms
Review 127:Thin walls, you could hear the people in the next room coughing like they were in our room, kids running up and down the halls and banging on the walls at 7am. I know this isn't the hotels fault, maybe they should put families with kids away from travelers without kids. I would have enjoyed sleeping in later than 7am!
Review 128:Convenient location, comfortable bed, clean room, mini fridge and a microwave!
Review 129:No pool or hot tub. Everything else was great!!!
Review 130:It was a great value! We only stayed one night but will defiantly use Americas Best again!! The room was comfortable and spacious!!
Review 131:Outdated interior Beds are uncomfortable Walls are paper thin
Review 132:Customer service is great Location (5 minutes from everything and anything) Best overall value in the area
Review 133:Personnel tried to say bookings.com didn't send them information in time and tried to put us in double beds. I complained and got a king bed. I reserved rooms a week before I went, should have been ready. No one at counter to check out, found them outside smoking (2 people) and just handed them my room keys. Unprofessional at best.
