Reviews for Vila Gale Santa Cruz
Review 1:Hotel reception extremely helpful, with good English. Breakfasts cannot be faulted. We did not have other meals. We ask for and get a room of our choice and we will go back next year
Review 2:Our room balcony didn't have roof like the others; it was smaller also. People on both sides smoked and the smoke wafted over. Also thought dinner buffet was pricey. Although front desk staff was helpful, an information sheet with all of our questions answered would have eased their burden. We received this at another hotel. (excursions, transport, breakfast and dinner info, towels, entertainment, etc.) There were often lines at the front desk.
Review 3:Early service for airport (taxi, check-out, breakfast). Nice selection at breakfast buffet including champagne. Great wine tasting first night (free!) and free bottle of wine with dinner - very nice touches. Also enjoyed the folklore entertainment very much.
Review 4:Room doors all close with a loud bang, expect to be woken up regularly at night. Location is about half a mile from the end of the airport runway, when the wind is from the west you will be deafened every 30 minutes.
Review 5:Pleasant staff, Clean rooms, excellent breakfast.
Review 6:A well-run, well-managed hotel. Service is consistent in all respects. Good food, great staff, & great facilities including an indoor pool that's actually warm enough to use! The sauna, steam rooms, Jacuzzi and gym are all excellent too.
Review 7:The Wifi signal was weak. It was had to use laptop or Iphone.
Review 8:The hotel is modern and clean. My room had a small balcony with a table and 02 chairs, flat tv and a comfortable bed. The breakfast was plentifully and well prepared.
Review 9:- small rooms - a really small washbasin
Review 10:- variety of food (breakfast & dinner) - very friendly staff - clean rooms - interesting location, as near to the airport (does not disturb!) - swimming pool (big and clean) - close to the sea - close to the promenade - near to the small town for a coffee & tea
Review 11:If you don't like planes passing close, then the VG isn't for you. It is right at the end of the runway. However, Madeira airport is not busy.. The spa is rather expensive (€15 per person).
Review 12:Lovely sea views, very clean and comfortable. We use regularly. Great staff and they will shuttle you to the airport.
Review 13:No free parking in the garage, though free parking is available behind the hotel. This is open access, but seems to be mainly used by guests and staff. Free WiFi only in public area, in rooms cost extra.
Review 14:We wanted to stay close to the airport before leaving on an early flight, so the location in Santa Cruz was perfect. The hotel sits just next to the cobble beach, which is nice for a dip or just watching the waves. Hotel is clean and well maintained. Breakfast was good but not fantastic. Bathing facilities are good, with indoor and outdoor pools, jacuzzi and sauna. Front staff are friendly and patiently attend to questions and requests.
Review 15:Where it let itself down was the lack of little extras, such as no tea / coffee facilities in the room, and only very basic options on the TV, i.e. other than news no Sky channels, but this did not spoil our holiday
Review 16:Nearly all aspects of this hotel could be rated excellent, including accommodation, pool, staff, and meals, with overall superb "value for money", and close to the airport.
Review 17:Nothing at all.
Review 18:Although I'm passing fully as a man, I'm a trans guy and still travelling with my passport with female gender. The staff looked at my passport briefly (I can hear them wondering) but they were so respectful with the situation and treat me in my preferred gender. So discrete and respectful.
Review 19:poor wifi in the rooms, airconditioning was poor and couldnt be adequately adjusted, no kettle for coffee/tea in the rooms and only available bar was near the pool.
Review 20:excellent breakfast, shuttle from airport, nice swimming pool, large rooms.
Review 21:I was disappointed with two things and did let the front staff know. The first was the shuttle service to funchal. I have been to madeira before do I knew how far Santa Cruz was from funchal. I booked the hotel believing we had a free shuttle service to funchal 4 times a day. I was able to use this service only once. It was always full if you did not book 3 days in advance. I ended up spending money on taxis. The second thing I was disappointed with was the pool towel service. Many times we kept the wet towels hanging on our balcony as there was a line up in the lobby with people checking in and out and I was not going to wait to exchange my towels. I would recommend this service perhaps be done right at the pool area.
Review 22:I liked the very friendly staff. The excellent breakfast. The extremely clean hotel and my room was always spotless everyday upon my return. I would recommend this hotel to all my family and friends travelling to madeira.
Review 23:Could be better lighting over the closet
Review 24:The comfort and large space and always pleasant and helpful staff.
Review 25:Friendly staff (especially at the reception) Excellent breakfast
Review 26:staff was very friendly, wine tasting session, location of the hotel
Review 27:The beds in hotel were extremely hard. Also cannot get wifi in rooms as they say.
Review 28:Lovely quiet village by the sea.
Review 29:Very bad quality of the Internet in the rooms
Review 30:bed, breakfast
Review 31:Welcome, complementary things, reduce prices for massage and dining
Review 32:The plastic undercover
Review 33:the staff
Review 34:Dodgy Wifi. Business centre rather primitive...
Review 35:Perfect location ! Bright and contemporary feeling.
Review 36:Good value. Excellent proximity to the airport.
Review 37:We have stayed here several times and it has always been very pleasant. The staff , especially, make it nice to come back to.
Review 38:a great deal of money to park
Review 39:close to airport
Review 40:No Wi-Fi in the rooms
Review 41:Great location and lots to do at the hotel. Very close to the airport and right on the water.
Review 42:The staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast outstanding. The whole hotel was clean and shining
Review 43:Staff Location Cleanliness Food Pool Peacefulness
Review 44:Too many people...at the pool, breakfast...
Review 45:Pool and location
Review 46:Wi fi free in reception areas. However it was necessary to continually log on every time which was time consuming and a nuisance.
Review 47:The evening meal and breakfast were excellent.
Review 48:Clean,modern hotel.Excellent staff and good facilities. It is fairly quiet in Santa Cruz but the hotel offers a minibus service to Funchal and there are plenty of local buses. Very good situation on the seafront with good sea views.
Review 49:Comfortable rooms, good breakfast buffet, helpful and friendly staff. There is not much to do in Santa Cruz, but the hotel has a free minibus to Funchal. They can provide a lift to the airport cheaper than a taxi. The hotel has free wi-fi in the lobby area.
Review 50:The indoor pool is paid - € 11 per person, per day. They seem toconsider indoor pool, sauna and jacuzzi as "spa services",that must be paid daily. Well, if you go there for a week and itsrainning you are oblige to pay to use the indoor pool. I know good 3star hotels (half the price of vila galé) that offer those services(with quality) for free.Again, the car park is paid - € 7.50 per day. The only issue that bugs me is that the park is maintained by the Hotel and has direct access to the Hotel, although it is also open to the public...So, they could obtain revenue with the public usage, but why the hell should the clients pay for it? The staff is very friendly (as mentioned above) and work very hard but you can tell that they are burried in work and work long hours...it would not hurt the hotel to hire a few more people...
Review 51:Very beautiful hotel with outstanding outdoor pool (kind of infinitepool) overlooking the ocean just 100 meters away - gorgeous!!The rooms are very confortable, spacious, good bathroom, closet space and balcony with chairs in each room! The staff in the bars and restaurant (breakfast buffet and dinner) will go the extra mile to help you and cater to your needs (I asked for fresh expressos each morning and once asked if the croissants were over, and although I said I did not wanted them, 5 minutes later, one employee went outside - where I was drinking my expresso with a plate with freshly baked, warm croissants... Very nice!!) Some people are there with all-inclusive, but the staff in the bar will serve you very nicely and quickly even if you want to buy a beer for yourself (although it is a bit pricy...€ 2.5 a small draft beer)...
Review 52:The size of the hotel. Too many guests for my liking and I felt a bitlike I was just "one of the crowd". Admittedly we had beensomewhat spoilt after spending 4 days at Reid's Palace earlier inour trip, so the comparison was perhaps a bit more noticeable. Since, personally, I soon grow bored of lying around a pool, the location wouldnot suit me for more than a day or two. Also, although notices proclaimthat the booking of sun loungers (my pet hate) is not permitted, I didnot see this being enforced. As we ate our early 7 A..M. Breakfastbefore leaving for the airport, I noticed several people already puttingout their towels even though the sun had barely peeked over the horizon.I just wish more hotels would clamp down on this selfish and anti-socialpractice. ≫:(
Review 53:We spent a single day here in transit from Porto Santo. I chose thishotel mainly due to it's Proximity to the airport, only about 5 minsby taxi. The downside to this is that it is quite a distance fromFunchal and most of the Madeiran attractions.Santa Cruz itself is aquaint little town, but only offers a few restaurants/cafes andlittle in the way of night life (we were fortunate to catch a live bandplaying popular cover numbers from the 70's and 80's in thevillage square, which was quite entertaining (although not necessarilyin the way intended!) For families with kids, the modest water park iswithin short walking distance. The hotel offers (free?) shuttles intotown, but these seem to be pretty busy. While I was checking in anotherguest was struggling to find an available shuttle to take her intoFunchal over the next 3 days. Therefore, unless you intend to spend yourentire holiday lying around the pool (as many seem content to do), ahire car is a must. The hotel itself is a large, modern resort, built around an impressive pool area. Just about every room therefore has a view over the pool and/or the sea. Double glazing insulates the rooms effectively from the noise of the pool and the occasional plane landing at the nearly airport. Our room was large, modern, clean and comfortable. Air conditioner worked well. We ate both the dinner and breakfast buffets which were up to 4 star standard. Food was copious and mostly tasty, but perhaps not gourmet fare. The dining room itself is enormous and the buffet can get quite crowded. Staff were friendly and efficient, if perhaps a bit impersonal, which is not really surprising given the number of guests. The spa area looked inviting (from the outside) but costs extra to use, I think they said 11 Euros. This might well be worth it for a little extra privacy.
Review 54:Internet was too expensive - I strongly feel this should be FOC in this day and age.
Review 55:Breakfast was excellent. Buffet meals where exceptional. Fresh food, good choice - slightly surprised me how nice buffet was, Not expensive either. Rooms are clean but nothing too exciting.
Review 56:You had to pay an extra 11 euros each to use the indoor pool, spa facilities and gym and not all of the spa facilities were in working order. There was no kettle in the room. The safe cost extra to use. The meals were expensive and so the dining room very empty, you could get much better value at outside venues. There was no entertainment and even the 'blues bar' had no music playing. On-site parking was at extra cost if you could not get into small outdoor public car park.
Review 57:The hotel staff were friendly and the room nice. The indoor pool was nice and had a lovely setting both day and night. Very close to the airport but not bothered by airplane noise.
Review 58:Paying separately for internet is no longer acceptable especially with the limited range wi-fi.
Review 59:The staff were really friendy and helpful. Comfortable, well-equipped rooms.Good breakfast buffet. Small but enjoyable pool, gym and sauna/steam room.
Review 60:I stayed at Vila Galé Santa Cruz so many times that I have no idea howmany they were. For me this hotel is like home. I have been in otherhotels around the Island, classified with more or less stars, but Ithink that this one is the best value you can get. An issue could bethat it is outside Funchal, the Capital city, but this is easily sortedout by the free of charge transport that runs from the hotel to Funchaland vice-versa several times a day. The whole staff is permanently ingood mood and available to help. They are all fluent in English and, each one is fluent in at least one, two or three other languages, mainly, Castillian, French and German.
Review 61:Excellent hotel, close to airport (a little noise a times, but notintrusive). Also close to small town with a reasonable selection of bars and cafes. Great for a couple of nights.
Review 62:This is a more than adequate 4 star hotel - clean, well designed, nice location right on the sea front in the pleasant village of Santa Cruz. Rooms are slightly small but well appointed. Buffet meals are average. It's modern and clean but a few crazy design features like black sinks and floors in the bathroom which show every stain. Beds not the best quality. It's one of those hotels where everything "extra" they can charge for, they do: internet, gym, indoor swimming pool, spa etc. I had to stay here just one night after a delayed flight home - and it's fine but soulless. I wouldn't want to spend a whole holiday here.
Review 63:Not acomplaint but free wifiwould be nice.
Review 64:The location near the airport. The facilities and comfort. Above all thestaff. All have been helpful, considerate, generous and kind. During thefour times wehave stayed there.
Review 65:Small front desk with only 02 attendants.
Review 66:A large, well maitain, great location and clean hotel.
Review 67:Large impersonal hotel
Review 68:Lovely breakfast with fantastic variety
Review 69:Nothing - it was great!
Review 70:Breakfast was lovely - there was a HUGE range to pick from.
Review 71:nothing
Review 72:everything was perfect
Review 73:the beds are a bit hard. shower is in bath but no handrail
Review 74:they serve the best breakfast I've eaten in a hotel
Review 75:Lack of tea/coffee making in rooms
Review 76:Location, friendliness
Review 77:breakfast
Review 78:The hotel location is excellent and the staff are lovely. Rooms are tasteful and food is excellent. A quiet , relaxing hotel.
Review 79:food could be a lot better.staff wonderfull!!!!
