Reviews for Sugar Beach Resort Hotel
Review 1:The bathroom and spa-bath area had shoddy tile work, wall paper and drywall finishes seemed sub- par. the room seemed dated and there was an odd smell when you would enter the room. Also we thought the breakfast advertised when we booked sounded like a nice feature, but we never used, no choices and was not well stocked.
Review 2:Great view of all of the equipment piled on our corner of the beach from the end of summer but that's about it.
Review 3:Clean room and facilities. Good breakfast.
Review 4:Off season rates and staff was very welcoming! Very clean and breakfast was fine. Went with two other couples and they liked it here also. We had a great view of the Lake. Pool and hot tub very clean. Will come back!
Review 5:The rooms were nice, the view was nice, the amenities were nice. It was a very wonderful weekend stay and we will be back with the kids next time! Love the game room and pool for them.
Review 6:Relatively close to downtown Traverse City, ease of access, and proximity to the beach were great! Room was clean and comfortable, security was pretty good too.
Review 7:I would have liked to have known beforehand that a $150 hold against my debit card was required for incidentals. The fact that it was done at all for two senior women was insulting. When I asked why incidentals could occur I was told damages to room..really do we look like Rock Stars???
Review 8:Location wonderful, overall impression very good. But I saw thq
Review 9:It would me nice to have more choices for breakfast such as a variety of egg options, more fruit choices, and maybe meat option. But overall great experience!
Review 10:Advertised "deluxe continental breakfast." Had a problem with the word "deluxe." Nothing deluxe about that breakfast. Clerks at counter were efficient, but not very friendly. Felt like you were a bother.
Review 11:Location. Nice view of bay; however, paid more for that view. Rooms clean.
Review 12:Bathroom tile needed deep cleaning, found stuffed animal under bed.. So how well do they clean? No refill on room coffee and condiments
Review 13:Staff helpful, great location
Review 14:Called in advance for directions. Staff was not helpful and somewhat rude. Alternate directions could have been offered due to lane closure. Took 45 minutes to drive 4 miles.
Review 15:We had the room right next to the breakfast dining area. That was a little loud and very busy. There was a group (I think kids) that kept hitting our wall with their chairs.
Review 16:Loved the balcony with the beautiful view of the lake. Room was very nice and the bed was very comfortable. It was a cold fall weekend, but had the weather been nicer, we would have been able to enjoy the beach area more.
Review 17:the breakfast was poor quality, such as the apples soft and no taste.the eggs were cold.the coffee was not a quality taste. perhaps less choices, but better quality?
Review 18:the rooms were very clean and updated.the staff was helpful in where to eat and let us play cards on a table near the entrance.it was very quiet.
Review 19:Hot scrambled eggs would be a great addition to the cold boiled eggs. The waffles were wonderful. Bananas and apples were available. Breakfast room and view are wonderful.
Review 20:There was a woman working at the front desk who was so incredibly rude that we would consider going elsewhere next time. My husband was shocked that someone could be so rude after a simple question was asked. We asked about the time that breakfast and coffee would be available and were met with unbelievable hostility.
Review 21:Great location, close to downtown Traverse City. Rooms are very clean and the continental breakfast is great. Views of the water are incredible and the waterfront is a beautiful, sandy beach.
Review 22:Staff later in the day were less than helpful and rather rude. Breakfast was advertised as deluxe buffet it was not deluxe. Maybe continental. Don't oversell bagels and coffee!
Review 23:Location and cleanliness were excellent. Staff when we checked in were very nice.
Review 24:Bathroom did not have a vanity no running water to wash after using. Spa tub was not for us Breakfast was not good Room set-up was weird. Matress was uncomfortable.
Review 25:location was good Beech was very nice and usable.
Review 26:The computer system was down. You had to prove your reservation that took for hours. They did not have ang extra staff at the desk to help and made gust wait in a line to check in.
Review 27:The setting.
Review 28:Location to the beach was nice. The breakfast food was decent - we enjoyed the waffles and we sat outside on the deck. Room was clean and comfortable and had a fridge which we needed for breast milk storage. Price was reasonable because we came after Labor Day.
Review 29:Small breakfast area for large hotel that was full and could use better breakfast options. Bathroom in our room needed some updating.
Review 30:Good location, comfortable and clean room, friendly staff.
Review 31:The room when first walked in smelled like smoke the Monday night we stayed. Front desk offered to switch, but the new rooms smelled smokey too.
Review 32:I liked the hotel and it is convenient, in fact I stayed twice within 3 day period. However, they charged $60.00 more when stayed on Friday vs on Monday and it was the exact room on the third floor. It was clean and the beds were comfortable.
Review 33:Our room smelled like someone had been smoking in it. My husband told the front desk and they put a black box in our room-on our sink and left it there. It did help with the smell though.
Review 34:Right on the water! We loved that-was very close to everything. However the front desk recommended the Jolly Pumpkin Restaurant-We did not like this restaurant!
Review 35:Nothing! We were there on Labor Day weekend. Crowded but everyone was having a good time!
Review 36:Had a girls weekend here. Location on the beach was perfect and proximity to town was nice. Facilities were clean and access to beach "toys" was great! Rentals are a bit too expensive but we had fun!
Review 37:Beds could be a bit more comfortable. Breakfast is just ok. Could get better coffee.
Review 38:Very clean, great location, great shops & restaurants in town. Everyone is friendly.
Review 39:The breakfast was okay. Basically cheese, bagels, boiled egg ans cereal.
Review 40:The staff was very friendly and helpful. We asked for early check in and late check out and they were more than cooperative. The hotel has private beach which is nice. The rooms were clean.
Review 41:Poor breakfast considering the price of the stay. Too much walking to the rooms. Some swipe key entrance doors did not work so there was a long walk around.
Review 42:The rooms, staff and pool were good.Great room looking straight out over the sea. Very close to Smoke and Porter restaurant over the road, which is a must go to independent place serving brilliant food.
Review 43:Ground level room was very noisy for most of the night. Kids running the hallway to/from indoor pool and upstairs rooms partied until mid-morning. Room heater unit stunk so bad we couldn't use it. Hotel is located North side of busy state highway - you can't cross highway on foot to access the restaurants which are ALL on the South side of the road!! PS - We asked for an upstairs room - go figure.
Review 44:On the beach. ADHD families will love it.
Review 45:Pricing was too high for time of year.
Review 46:The beds and pillows were very comfortable. Near restaurants. Plenty of beach chairs. Very good air conditioning. Room had more than enough towels for the 2 of us. The view was excellent. Parking and breakfast were only adaquate.
Review 47:We needed more plugs for cap machine. Beds were not very comfortable and sagged a bit.
Review 48:Liked view of Lake from balcony. Furniture on balcony was more sturdy and comfortable than other hotels we've stayed.
Review 49:Friendly staff! very helpful. WE came into town early and the staff was very helpful. gave us directions and called us when are room was ready. Thanks Again
Review 50:Overall, Traverse City wasn't a location we'd care to return to. It didn't offer the atmosphere we tend to prefer. I'm sure it would be fine for those who like the town rush and crowding. It would depend on the person with whom we were speaking, as to whether we'd recommend it or not.
Review 51:The hotel property was very pleasant.
Review 52:Had to clean out tub before use due to a bunch of dirt in the bottom.
Review 53:Location was awesome. Staff was hit or miss. Rooms met expectations but did not exceed them.
Review 54:Wish I'd had a groupon or $ discount.
Review 55:Great location. Loved balcony overlooking the lake. Pleasant and helpful staff. Conveinient and delicious breakfast.
Review 56:We ordered a beachfront room and instead got a room overlooking the parking lot. That was rather disappointing. If I want to view of the parking lot I would've stayed at Motel 6. The breakfast was the carbohydrate overload. The only form of printing available was hard boiled eggs and milk. Not exactly what you call a build me up.
Review 57:Location
Review 58:Our room was located right beside the only entry door to our wing. We had to hear the door closing every 5 mins. It was very annoying. And staff was not helpful at all!
Review 59:Was not happy that the room did not have a real self/table for coffee station. Did not like the refrigerator stuffed in the only closet space.
Review 60:Enjoyed being directly on the the bay.
Review 61:There were some small insects flying around the bathroom; the carpet smelled musty; and, the check-in time of 4 was pretty late in the day.
Review 62:We loved the beach out back and the size of the room and the location of the breakfast nook.
Review 63:The location is FANTASTIC! The private beach is incredible! The staff was fantastic. Other little things, we were on the third floor at the end of the hall, and the water was hot when we needed and cold when we needed...all day long. Shower was great.
Review 64:Our bathroom in our room had a very strong odor of urine. The bathroom floor was sticky and weird stains. Clearly it had not been cleaned. The shower also smelled strongly of urine. The jacuzzi tub wasn't cleaned either. There was no safe in the room to lock up valubles.
Review 65:The bed was most comfortable. It was nice to be near the water.
Review 66:Would have liked access to a TV program guide so you knew what was available to watch.
Review 67:Clean and quiet room. Nice coastal theme. We had everything we needed in a comfortable and relaxing room - great staff.
Review 68:Breakfast wasn't much. Standard waffles, store bought pastries etc. I like a firm bed but this one was too hard.
Review 69:Very clean large room. Being right on the beach was great. Great pillows and friendly staff.
Review 70:The bed was not comfortable and this was a noisy hotel or location of room. Between the bed not being comfortable and the noise starting at 8am, we were ready to go. I have to agree with a previous review on the breakfast being chaotic. They need to change to where you can walk down two sides or something. It was a little crazy. We had a parking lot view room but I knew that I had a "garden view" when I booked the room. You could see light all around my door and the noise just poured in. You could hear the staff cleaning, knocking on doors, the parking lot...everything! The breakfast is held on the second floor.
Review 71:The location is great and the room was clean and nice. Bigger than most rooms as we had the king bed with tub. I thought it looked nicer in person for sure. The beach and indoor pool with hot tub was nice.
Review 72:No emergency back-up power for power outage that followed the storm. how every was compensated fairly .
Review 73:great storm passed through, got a great view of the front coming at us. Awesome !!!!!!
Review 74:Room had terrible, musty smell,, and was very humid. The maintenance tried to solve problem, but it did not work. Thus, it was difficult to sleep and everything in our room felt "wet" due to the humidity issue.
Review 75:Room and bathroom were spacious. Nice private beach area. Manager and other workers were very nice and helpful.
Review 76:Cant really think of anything bad to say.
Review 77:The room was very comfy including the beds/pillows - view from the room was lovely - overall enjoyed our experience.
Review 78:Room smelled like smoke. Courtyard view. Treated badly by front desk staff because I booked thru an "outside party". No sink in bathroom. I could go on and on.
Review 79:Not a lot. Cute town.
Review 80:The beach was full of cigarette butts, dirt diaper stuck in sand.Breakfast was always lines.Tables un-cleaned.i watched people from another hotel walk in an have breakfast an walk back. No one checkshallways kids banged doors yelling screening till after mid night. Moldin the shower floor, I got stuck with the handicap room.
Review 81:Well the being on the beach.
Review 82:I wish the pool had easier beach access to go back and forth without going thru the lobby.
Review 83:Loved the breakfast room and choices each morning. Loved the view from our room of the beach area. Great location for going to the shops and restaurants.
Review 84:Breakfast setup was a little chaotic, but maybe that was just due to our fellow guests.
Review 85:Property is fantastic. Beach is reset daily, and is very well maintained. There are a lot of staff, and all of them were eager to help and very friendly.
Review 86:the breakfast area was not adequately air conditioned. small area for the amount of people. nothing special offered.
Review 87:Loved the location. we had a view of the water and loved listening to the surf. and the sunset was spectacular which was God's gift to us.
Review 88:The hotel staff refused to honor our reservation for a first floor room because we booked the room with booking.com and not directly with them. I had an email confirming our first floor reservation but the front desk couldn't care less.
Review 89:The first floor beach level room is the only reason to book this hotel.
Review 90:That everyone comes out to the beach in the morning and throws something on all the chairs so when you come out all the chairs are "taken" yet no one is on the beach.
Review 91:Nice spot on the beach and 5 minutes from downtown
Review 92:Carpeting in rooms must go,retain humidity & therefore always smell musty. Mattress was ok but could be upgraded to new & firmer. Waffle maker impedes flow in breakfast room- either move it or have staff make for us.
Review 93:Location on sandy beach and on main drag
Review 94:8/2/2015 power failure. 8 hours with no power no wifi no pool no vending machine. no lights. no provisions provided by hotel during this storm. yet charged full price ....
Review 95:waffels
Review 96:Had no electricity for 8 hours so I paid for 2 days and only used the facilities one day. I asked for a discount and they didn't care that we were in the dark. We had to go to WalMart to get flash lights just so we could see to get to our room, which they couldn't give us keys to because of no power. They should have had a generator to at least light up the hallways.
Review 97:On the beach
Review 98:There were 3 bags of trash in the hallway when I arrived at my room. Ifeel that for the 228.00 that I spent I should not have had to look attrash in the hallways. Housekeeping was still in the hallways at 4 pm.Breakfast choices were very marginal. No fruit on the buffet. Most of all I feel there should be a refund for having to look at 3 large black trash bags in the hallway when I arrived at my room. Also, I feel there should have been some kind of refund with the power outage due to the storm. I have stayed at Sugar Beach in years gone by and been very happy with it, however this year was very disappointing. I will not be back unless someone calls to talk to me about the trash in the hallway or offers a discount or refund.
Review 99:For the last 2 years there have been families over 26 people that were very loud messy and smoked cigars on the beach. Or on the tables out side I happen to hate cigars they stink. It spoiled some evenings outside.
Review 100:The view is amazing and rooms are really clean
Review 101:Preferred beachfront room The water trampoline was pricey and had to be rented by the hour - so it literally taunted the children because we didn't pay the 60 to rent .... And made them sad they couldn't use it. It would be a much better idea to include it as an optional upgrade at the front desk ....
Review 102:Walk out room on the beach
Review 103:Poor breakfast. Did not get a handicapped, first floor or near elevator room as requested 4 months in advance. Told me I shouldn't have used a 3rd party booking agent.
Review 104:Near the lake
Review 105:No breakfast meat (sausage/bacon) and no eggs (except for hard boiled eggs). Lots of cigarette butts on beach. Hot tub was dirty.
Review 106:Loved the location and the room was very nice! Staff was excellent.
Review 107:Our room was at a location that we had to go down 2 full hallways to get to an elevator to exit the building on the first floor.
Review 108:The room was very large and clean! The toilet unfortunately was plugged before we arrived so my 4 year old had an issue as soon as we arrived :/ The location is beautiful, right on the beach and close to restaurants and attractions. Perfect for a family with children:)
Review 109:The front desk on our way out, didn't ask how things were, so I to,d her.. Her response was "hmm.."
Review 110:The front desk person on the way in was a nice and pleasant person.
Review 111:Did not honor price quoted by booking.com, Renovation in room left some spots where the carpet wasn't covering the baseboard.
Review 112:Location, Beach conditions, bathroom renovations are good.
Review 113:Just purely a pesonal preference... The mattress was way too soft/cushy for me, caused discomfort.
Review 114:Hotel location is perfect, just far enough away from downtown to avoid the congestion. The room was very nice, great view of the bay. The continental breakfast was very convenient, especially for the kids prior to heading for the beach.
Review 115:They had just finished renovations and paint smell strong. Should have aired out a bit longer
Review 116:Great value, location convienent. Breakfast nothing special regarding foot but great view
Review 117:Little bugs outside patio area and on the patio floor. Needs to be cleaned outside patio floor more frequently.
Review 118:Private beach and friendly staff. Beds and pillows very comfortable.
Review 119:Had problem with my credit card. Held reservation on one card and paid with another upon our arrival. A 3-5 day hold was put on my credit card that I used to reserve the room. Could not get access to any funds. Problem was eventually resolved between the resort and my bank.
Review 120:Friendly staff, great location, good price, beautiful view of the lake. Cleanliness of the room and comfortable bed.
Review 121:The weather in June wasn't as warm as we thought it would be, not the hotels fault.
Review 122:Service was great, breakfast on time, and endless service at breakfast time. The staff at the front desk were very pleasant and accommodating. We had a family vacation reserving 3 rooms and we wanted to be on same floor. They made it work.
Review 123:The breakfast was just okay. We ate it because it was included. Very basic continental breakfast.
Review 124:Nice, clean hotel right on the bay. The view was beautiful. The indoor pool area was nice, especially since it was too chilly to swim outside when we were there in June. It is right on the main road that heads right downtown, which made it very convenient to get to everything including Old Mission Peninsula.
Review 125:The breakfast was ho hum. The facility itself clean, but for a few dollars they could make it really really great compared to the others
Review 126:The location and view can not be beat
Review 127:There was a courtesy call at 300pm asking if we pleased with our room. Which would have normally been fine, but my 6-month pregnant wife just laid down for a nap. Also, the coffee pot was never cleaned out from the guests before, made us wonder what else they "forgot" to clean.
Review 128:we were at one end of the Hotel and the Wi-Fi didn't always work there. Would update in the morning at the continental breakfast in the middle of the building
Review 129:Our room was really nice. The beds were comfy. We were on the lower level on the lakeside so we had a patio and could walk right out our door to the beach. Had trouble with our TV the first night so they replaced it with a new LG and it worked perfectly. The maintenance man was very nice,
Review 130:Staff is always friendly and welcoming and I always feel comfortable when I stay there. The rooms and the resort are always kept clean. The best thing is the view of the bay and the pool!!
Review 131:The hotel was a little pricey. Don't get me wrong, it was all very nice, but I just thought it was a little expensive. That may just be a personal opinion.
Review 132:Great view, nice beach, great staff.
Review 133:The continental breakfast was lacking. Wishing there was more choices and variety of breakfast food. We've had way better continental breakfast in our travels. Over the course of 4 days, our tissues were never restocked and balcony wasn't cleaned of bird droppings.
Review 134:Great view! Very friendly staff! Clean room!
Review 135:There was no hot water for our showers in the morning! The beds didn't have much for bedding-felt like you were sleeping with a sheet-not very cozy!
Review 136:View and balcony made for an amazing stay!
