Reviews for Hotel Gravensteen

Review 1:Bed was uncomfortable, combined double beds together to make one and it sags to where you can feel the springs. Looked like mold was growing near vent in bathroom.

Review 2:Location and price was great. Front desk was friendly and knowledgable.

Review 3:Just a bit concerned with the labyrinthian exit in case of fire.

Review 4:We stayed in a higher level room in the annex (#93) that was cozy and quiet, with wooden beams, a nice partial view over the old town, comfortable bed, and a great bathroom with bath...perfect in the winter. The staff is extremely nice and professional. Great value!

Review 5:The hotel has a perfect location, just in the heart of the city. The staff is so welcoming that you feel like home right away. The room facilities are on a good level, just as it is in the description.

Review 6:The rooms are a bit small but acceptable, just be prepared. Walls are a bit thin since it's an old building and you get the odd door slamming in the morning. Overall minor aspects unless these are critical for you.

Review 7:Great Location within the centre and walking distance from all the attractions. Nice cosy clean rooms, kind staff, good wifi everywhere.

Review 8:The gym is very poor. Not possible to do anything there. They charge 10€ extra for using the sauna.

Review 9:Location, friendly staff, great room size, parking area nearby, pet friendly, very comforable room!

Review 10:the heat in 1 of 2 rooms did not work although staff tried to correct this. As it was a holiday, a service person could not be called.

Review 11:Location excellent, staff friendly and helpful rooms very nice.

Review 12:We had a couple of items of jewellery go missing from the room which the staff seemed unable to deal with. It spoiled the holiday a bit. Parking in Ghent can be expensive but we did manage to find secure parking very reasonably priced about a 15 min walk away. Room needed another mirror other than the one in the shower room.

Review 13:Central location. Comfy bed, good breakfast. Plenty of soap, clean towels, coffee and tea making facilities.

Review 14:Lipton tea. It is a better to provide a kettle to make tea. The hot water tasted of coffee when made with the combination machine

Review 15:Although close to the city centre it was nice and quiet. Good sized bathroom, great shower.

Review 16:to get to our room from the 1st floor there were approx 10 steps very steep and narrow and very dangerous! Also to get to our friends room the same problem and even worse!!

Review 17:the location

Review 18:Our radiators were not working on arrival. Sorted that night, but not working again the second night. After that they were fine

Review 19:Brilliant location. Excellent breakfasts. Lovely views of the city from our top floor room

Review 20:Nothing.

Review 21:It's a lovely looking hotel and we liked the room very much, with it being very spacious and very comfortable. Customer service was really good too from staff who were friendly and polite. The hotel is located in the city centre near Castle Gravensteen and pubs, cafes and restaurants.

Review 22:The bathroom could use some renovation (cracks in door and ceilling)

Review 23:Location, friendly staff, private parking, nice entree and lounge, comfortable bed

Review 24:Sometimes there would be sounds (loud people, trash collection) from streets outside--this isn't the hotel's fault, as the streets are narrow and sound travels up. However, most of the time, the hotel and outside was quiet.

Review 25:Staff was very helpful. Nice breakfast. Location near market and many sites; good location near tram stop. WiFi worked well, but I had executive room with enhanced reception.

Review 26:The hotel is on a number of levels which was not a problem but stairs down to rooms 51 and 53 are quite steep and could be awkward for the less agile.

Review 27:Nice hotel which we (party of three couples) enjoyed. Great Location, good breakfast.

Review 28:windows are no double glazing. very load noise from the street all along the night.

Review 29:great location. very nice place & Rooms are spacious and comfortable

Review 30:There was no warm water for an hour in the morning. It would have been nice if they would have offerd us some coffee or something like that...

Review 31:The location

Review 32:Shower screen had no rubber at the bottom so water ended up all over the floor, accident waiting to happen.

Review 33:Location was fantastic, it was lovely and clean and the receptionist was extremely helpful.

Review 34:Getting there! Ghent is a difficult place to drive round owing to masses of road works and an extensive pedestrian-only area, coupled with very poor road signs.

Review 35:Great situation in the heart of Ghent. Car parking on site very useful. Right next to excellent restaurants and all the sights. Friendly helpful staff, good bar.

Review 36:Our bathroom had a really bad odour coming from it but we told them in the morning and they gave us a different room to shower in, much nicer too!

Review 37:Nice place to spend the night, very great location with the castle across the road!

Review 38:The entry door to our room, and the bathroom door, were fitted into the door jams incorrectly and would not close.

Review 39:Good location, friendly staff, great breakfast.

Review 40:I have no complaints. I only stayed 1 night mind you.

Review 41:Location and right at tram stop. The room wasn't bad at all. Clean. For the value of your money it was great.

Review 42:Driving around Ghent was a nightmare... my GPS took me on pedestrian areas... I hear they changed everything to be more bike friendly recently... Nothing against the hotel.. hahaha

Review 43:I could not have asked for a better location... right across from the Castle... it was easy to walk everywhere... Lots to see ... it was all in all a very great experience!!

Review 44:No hot water for a few hours as boiler was down. We were given a attic room which we have to drag our luggage up 2 flights of stairs after taking a lift.

Review 45:Conveniently located and very Nice rooms and staff.

Review 46:Only a problem for me- I need a really thin feather pillow, these weird continental square pillows are hopeless for my neck!!!!

Review 47:Location, excellent for exploring Ghent. able to park if you arrive in own vehicle

Review 48:The mattress was really soft, so not so comfortable. Also, that we had to pay for the parking.

Review 49:Perfect location and only few minutes away from the center.

Review 50:Toilet was a little smelly but they cleaned it straight away when we mentioned it to reception. Gym was ok, just make sure you get the key for the treadmill from reception before going down.

Review 51:The location was excellent. Near the tram stop for ease of access to/from the train station; and close to Gravensteen Castle, across a little bridge with a very nice foyer. Reception staff were friendly. Our room was in the annex building. Easy to get to via lift, and a large clean room with tea/coffee making facilities

Review 52:Shower head holder was broken.

Review 53:Lovely old building. Great breakfast with hot and cold choices. No.1 tram from Railway Station passes hotel. Numerous great cafes and bars close by.

Review 54:No air conditioner and not sufficient ventilation to get rid of strong smelling cleaning product aroma. Although the room had a safe as stated - this was not attached in any way and you could basically walk out of the hotel with it if you were so inclined - which rendered the safe inconveniently unusable.

Review 55:Location, location, location - right by the Gravensteen Castle and really near almost everything in Ghent. Rooms nice, spacious enough. We were in the annex right by the breakfast room and had a nice view of the (quiet) inner yard.

Review 56:The hotel looked a bit worn. The bathroom waste basket still contained the residues of my predecessor. Lamps were dangling from wires next to the elevator door. I had no warm water until I mentioned it at the reception. There is no restaurant service. In the little bar I waited for 15 minutes without getting service. Then I left. Three stars are a fair rating, but for three stars I think it's overpriced. But the city is expensive and the service was minimal, at least as I experienced it.

Review 57:Excellent location within center district.

Review 58:The lift was being repaired and we were on the third floor, some 90 winding staircase stairs from reception. No assistance. We are 55 and 63 and struggled with the winding staircase - and we are fairly fit. Also, though we had a beautiful view of the castle the noise from people on the street until the wee hours was loud. We slept with ear plugs.

Review 59:The position was brilliant. Good breakfast. Friendly staff. Nice old building.

Review 60:Unfortunately a group of young people had a party at the other side of the street, (outside) which lasted till 04.00 hrs. The hotel is not to blame, they gave us a room at the most quiet side and were very sorry about the noise!

Review 61:Friendly staff

Review 62:No warning about work being done on hotel. Reception desk not adequately manned, especially at departure.

Review 63:Centre of Ghent location. Very well equipped room.

Review 64:It was centrally located right in the heart of the old town. The room was very comfortable and clean and the staff were friendly and helpful. I had a great stay and loved Ghent.

Review 65:The lifts were being repaired and our rooms were on the 3rd floor.Bathroom was very small.

Review 66:Great view of the castle and central for the historic part of the town.

Review 67:Beautiful room (number 12 the luxury one). It's enormous and has a great view of the castle. Breakfast was varied and plentiful. Staff were excellent and helpful.

Review 68:Elevator did not work for 3 days. Stairways are narrow and tortuous. Not for the aged etc.

Review 69:excellent location, yet quiet. High quality free coffee machine with capsule. I was freely upgraded to an excellent room. Design is boutique style. There is a small free gym which I enjoyed as well.

Review 70:Hotel was under renovation, lift broke down for the last three days (we had the highest room in the hotel up 67 stairs - don't ask for a balcony room), and it took 5 days to fix the minibar so we could store some fresh milk.

Review 71:Location was good and staff were very helpful, under the circumstances. Excellent breakfast.

Review 72:Lovely old building but a bit sad and dated in places. Colour scheme and carpets would benefit from a freshen-up.

Review 73:Great location. Very helpful staff. Were very considerate about the restoration of the lift.

Review 74:The elevator wasn't working when we there and we had to haul suitcases up and down 3 flights of the stairs. Also, a very cramped tiny room.

Review 75:The staff were really nice. Very helpful. And the location was very good. Close to everything!

Review 76:Finding parking was not straightforward, given that centre of the city looks pedestrian/bicycle only, but staff was helpful.

Review 77:Great location and price/value ratio. Breakfast was also decent.

Review 78:Very welcoming and helpful receptionist despite being tired and grumpy when we arrived. Lovely large rooms with high ceiling. Very comfortable bed beautiful bathroom and fittings. Despite being in town it was quiet.

Review 79:Had to bang room door to shut it, so noisy. Other rooms had same problem.

Review 80:Good location. Friendly staff who spoke good English. Breakfast included in price.

Review 81:This is a great hotel in a wonderful location in the historic old town. We quickly felt at home here, there is so much to see and do. My top floor room in the rear annex was really quiet and secluded, which was appreciated because the tram service does start early and runs right past the front of the hotel. The room offers everything you could want and the breakfast service was the best continental style buffet I have ever enjoyed.

Review 82:Perfect location, really spacious room with a super comfy bed. Only 11€ for 24h parking at the hotel. Lovely old building with just the right feeling, wifi worked perfectly and the staff was very polite.

Review 83:Staff did not care much, safe was locked they said someone will come and fix it but they didn't. Very small room hard to walk around the bed. Furthermore it has low ceiling. Lift did not operate well to level 3.

Review 84:Excellent location

Review 85:It's more like motel 6 then a hotel. Staff just gave us a key with no explanation of how things worked in the room or that the room had a terrible mosquito problem.

Review 86:Room service was inconsistent. The mosquitoes. Bathroom was very small and there was an intermittent slight odor. Music festival noise went on into the night!

Review 87:The hot chocolate was the best in Ghent! Fabulously located for the major sites. The staff were very friendly and responsive.

Review 88:Could not get the hair dryer to work and when I went to reception (with wet hair) to tell them, I was told there was nothing he could do! Music Festival is for 10days in July, so a lot of the streets near the hotel are closed off including the one leading to their car park.

Review 89:Good location for visiting the historic district

Review 90:This was our second visit in a week. The young receptionist was brilliant and she found the glasses that my wife had left behind the previous week. When we had phoned the week before they said that they were not there; couldn't be bothered to look. Our bedroom was OK in the annex, better than our last visit. Managed to get a space in the very limited parking place

Review 91:Central location, but problems with access by car (complicated one-way system) and parking (had to park in an underground car park 15 minutes away on foot)

Review 92:Very good facilties - perfect for a one- or two-night stay; friendly and helpful staff

Review 93:Location near the most spectacular part of city, and even has some parking. Old town house with an added conversion and new wing across a courtyard - well fitted. Varied choices breakfast worth having.

Review 94:Being in the historic centre near Graslei. Low-key excellent care of friendly staff. Spacious and well-appointed room. Excellent unlimited buffet breakfast. Controllable air-conditioning system.

Review 95:Not much comfortable communal sitting area and the bedroom would have benefitted from bedside mats as the floor was bare boarded ....

Review 96:Liked Breakfast, position and staff.....parking very convenient , general atmosphere good and characterful decor.

Review 97:Right next to the Castle so in the historic heart of the city AND parking (although i did not like having to pay for it!). Clean room, comfortable bed but room rather small.

Review 98:If a peaceful night's sleep is wanted then this hotel is not recommended. An exceptionally noisy hotel, which comes from traffic, trams, drunks and early morning workmen.

Review 99:The hotel was well appointed within the historical part of the city. Also the breakfast was tasty, varied and well presented.

Review 100:My husband walks with a stick and some of the stairs were steep and on one occasion the lift was not working. Not an appropriate hotel for anyone with mobility issues.

Review 101:Location was excellent as was breakfast.

Review 102:The elevator is not for all rooms. Be prepared to carry your luggage through a very uncomfortable staircases to downstairs after getting off the elevator. Second bothering thing was the smell of the kitchen from the nearby restaurant.

Review 103:Location is very good.

Review 104:We booked two rooms in this hotel for a business trip. Although we explicitly asked for one of the rooms to be a twin room, there was a confusion with the bed arrangement, which created a bit of mess for us. And there was no effort to make up for it. Also at the check-out getting a formal hotel receipt was a bit of a trouble. Apart from that, the rooms were nice and clean. Having the chance to have coffee and tea in the rooms was useful. The executive room was a very spacious and comfortable. The location in the historical center was convenient as well.

Review 105:The staff were not really helpful, did not seem eager to help. The room was not cleaned till very late in the afternoon. worst of all, there was not enough space in the bathroom to keep all the toiletries for 2 people. And it's not like we lug a lot of luggage: on this 4-week long trip to Europe we only packed one carry-on each.

Review 106:I liked the location, near the Gravensteen Castle. The hotel is in a beautiful building from early 20th century. The lobby and the computer room were nicely renovated and decorated. The breakfast was decent, especially on the days when they had smoked salmon.

Review 107:We felt there were insufficient staff on Reception for such a busy hotel. We saw, and personally experienced, incorrect billing of guests, causing delays and irritation. Simply, staff require further training. They also have to deal with the BAR area, which we found small and plain, this is otherwise a beautiful hotel.

Review 108:Attractive, comfortable hotel only a short stroll from the major attractions. Excellent breakfasts available.

Review 109:The hotel is situated right in the heart of the old city, opposite the castle and near the river. Everything within walking distance. Plenty of good restaurants nearby.

Review 110:The convenient situation of the hotel , close to castle Gravensteen and centre of old Ghent . We liked our room and it was great to be able to park the car off-road !

Review 111:Hotel was a little untidy in places and could do with a higher maintenance standard. Scruffy seating in lounge area, damp stains on walls etc

Review 112:Great location for sight seeing. Hotel room clean and comfortable. Our room faced out towards the rear car park which made quiet for a good nights sleep.

Review 113:When you look at the hotel pictures, you think it is a nice hotel to stay. But they gave me a room on the second building behind the main one. It was at the roof. The design, hygiene eveything was dissappointing.

Review 114:Breakfast was ok. Wifi was really good.

Review 115:I got the last room. It was rather noisy[1st floor on the street]the TV did not work and the door was difficult to close.

Review 116:Good building + tired but attractive common parts Breakfast well worth extra charge

Review 117:Mattress seemed very soft but if you like a soft one, then you will be pleased. There is nowhere in the bathroom to put things. It was fine for one night but if one is planning to stay longer than that, ask for a larger room and bath. In general I was very pleased to have stayed here.

Review 118:Good value for the money. Excellent staff. Safe place to store suitcase. Location near everything you'd like to visit is excellent.

Review 119:Parking adjacent tyo hotel bit hit-and-miss. Limited spaces. Make sure bikes are well locked.

Review 120:Fantastic breakfast. Quiet location (even though it was 50 metres from the railway stn. Nice big bed. Very clean, very slick. Big beaming smiles from staff. Complimentary bowl of soup on arrival. Help-yourself coffees and wine in the main reception

Review 121:Très bien placé au cœur de ville ,qui permet en cas de temps pluvieux ou fatigue des jambes de se replier momentanément avant de repartir à l'assaut des canaux et des ruelles

Review 122:Problem with phone not working in room, gentleman at front desk in the evening rude, refused to do anything about it till he asked pdrsonal questions about our health.

Review 123:Paying 10 Euros for a sauna!! The sauna is advertised on the website with no mention of any extra charge. This is not good. Why charge guests for this? Every other hotel I have stayed at that has a sauna has not charged.

Review 124:Excellent breakfast

Review 125:Could do with proper bedside cabinets with drawers or a chest of drawers to store clothes etc. No storage apart from the hanging space in the wardrobe. The extractor fan in our shower room wasn't working because the fan blades were jammed. I had to flick the blades with a cotton bud to get it to work.

Review 126:Located right in the centre of the old town. Good value for money compared with similar hotels. Parking facilities on site.

Review 127:Just around the corner from both the castle and the waterfront where you can find excellent restaurants and wonderful little shops. The views of the city from the waterfront are splendid.

Review 128:The room was really Spartan. Nothing fancy. Expected more charm considering it is in a historical building. Didn't get to stay in the building and rooms pictured on the website.

Review 129:Location. Walk to all sites, food and shopping

Review 130:- room was close to dining room, it was quite loud in the morning

Review 131:- huge bathroom with two sinks - no problem in the morning - big&comfortable bed - great location in the center

Review 132:Bed is 2 linked singles calling itself a queen. Not very comfortable. Annex is bland, lacking Any sense of history or charm.

Review 133:Location, quiet at night, excellent a/c
