Casa Rural Santo Condestavel descritpion

Built in the 17th century, this typical, whitewashed house in Monsaraz has original features such as frescoes, arches and exposed stone. With free Wi-Fi, it offers rooms with Alentejo-style, carved wooden beds.
Each room at Santo Condestável House provides a TV, heating and private bathroom. Some have views towards Alqueva Lake, air conditioning and a wooden ceiling.
Breakfast is available and is served in a small dining room with stone floor. There are a few restaurants located within a 5-minute walk.
It is believed that Nuno Alvares Pereira, a famous Portuguese soldier and monk, once stayed at Casa Rural Santo Condestável. The house is named after him. Monsaraz itself has medieval streets and a pre 11th-century castle, located 2 minutes’ walk away.
Alqueva Lake is a 5-minute drive from the property and Evora is 35.4 miles away. Free parking is possible on site.

Reviews for Casa Rural Santo Condestavel

Review 1:As the house is old, it was a bit cold inside. The hot water was not really hot, but still it is ok for shower.

Review 2:It is old house so interior is very historical and classic. Good atmosphere. Room was big

Review 3:Staff couldn't speak English and I had to communicate with broken Portuguese. Internet was not connected during my stay and the signal was weak upstairs

Review 4:The best part for me was the conditioner at the rooms, because Monsaraz was really hot, and the nice behavior of the staff.

Review 5:Owner was not there when we arrived, and we had to call her. Luckily we had a phone with us. Not good if you can't climb stairs or have problem if no one speaks a language other than Portuguese.

Review 6:Location in Monsaraz; size of room and bath; stylishly decorated

Review 7:Unfortunately the wifi was not available in the room, maybe due to the walls thickness.

Review 8:The location inside the village walls is excellent. The service is very pleasant and trustfull. Here, you feel like you're part of the family.

Review 9:This is the worst accommodation in our 10 day stay in Portugal, all at this room rate so no excuses there... Granted we knew we would have to wait for the reception (they have to drive in so expect to wait at least 30min) but when they came. They let us into the room mad left straight away...so basically there was no one there and the whole place was quite dark and forlorn. Bed was smallish and bathroom was not in the best of conditions but for us the worst thing was the musty moldy smell of the room. Not our cup of tea, would not recommend based on our experience.

Review 10:The room was decorated ok.

Review 11:You need to like simple country-style accomodation.

Review 12:The location is in the heart of the little town of Monsaraz. The staff is friendly and helpful although does not speak english. We had a magnificent view from our room.

Review 13:The bed is to hard. Needs one more layer on the new matraz. Wifi does not work in all rooms. This realy sucks

Review 14:The stuff is super helpful, very friendly. The large room and all its facilities are up to date. Sad that the jakuzzi bath is disconect. If this would work, guess the place needed to charge double the price. Was staying in various Hotel in and around Porto. Must say, this Hotel and the near location is far the best for my money. Will book it again, for shure!

Review 15:Very cold and foggy due to the time of year which can't be helped

Review 16:Brilliant location with very good restaurants nearby. Christmas figures in the village made it special with spectacular views, weather permitting.

Review 17:Parking slightly awkward at times in the centre. Breakfast quite ordinary; could easily be made better with the wonderful local products available.

Review 18:Wonderful location, with nice restaurants around. All in all a lovely place to stay at any time of year.

Review 19:No reception 24h, need to call a number and wait for the lady to come.

Review 20:The authenticity of the typical white house of alentejo, nice typical decoration, clean, amazing view from the terrace to the alqueva lake and to the surrounding hills. The beauty of medieval with arabic origin village of Monsaraz.

Review 21:the shower was dirty because of the wide use of cork which is impossible to clean

Review 22:the house built on the rocks, the traditional furniture, lot of space, silence and the view on the countryside

Review 23:The Wifi didn't work well in the room - just a minor remark.

Review 24:Wonderful place located in the center of the village. The staff was extremely friendly even though the spoke only portuguese. Excellent choice for a stay in Monsaraz.

Review 25:Nothing.

Review 26:Centrally located inside the medieval village and the architecture of the building is beatiful. Bed was really comfortable and the receptionist was really kind.

Review 27:Bed mattress was too hard. Bathtub was a bit rusty.

Review 28:Great establishment, with common area and bedroom decorated in a traditional fashion. Large bedroom and bathroom. Shared living room available. Nice personnel.

Review 29:No onsite parking for our motorcycles as promised on booking.com. Had to park them some distance away in public car park and had to remove all luggage for security. When asked, local police refused permission to park outside the house.

Review 30:Lovely old house inside castle walls with spectacular views. Comfortable large rooms. Excellent breakfast and friendly efficient staff.

Review 31:Wifi would not work at all in our room, only in public areas.

Review 32:It was all just so beautiful! Felt like we were in a bedroom in a medieval castle. Would also like to praise the taverna just close by, which served us superb food and wine at very reasonable prices.

Review 33:The hotel is the old parish house and, because of this, allergic people may suffer a little bit. But nothing that opened windows during the day won't solve.

Review 34:Everything.

Review 35:This is a lovely old building with a few rooms right in the centre of the lovely old town of Monsaraz. Perfect location

Review 36:This house is living history right in the centre

Review 37:The bed and pillows.

Review 38:The staff, the location,. the view of the suit. The staff is very kind and helpfull!

Review 39:Everything was perfect. The Staff was extremelly eficient and friendly. The style was fantastic. We got the suite and as superb with the view

Review 40:Uncomfortable bed,,lousy wifi. Tv

Review 41:Location, clean

Review 42:Beautiful rustic rooms!

Review 43:No reception. Had to call number on door and wait for about 30 minutes for staff member.

Review 44:Clean, comfortable bed and breakfast was ok

Review 45:Breakfast- overpriced and only thing good was the bread

Review 46:Terrace view

Review 47:Breakfast, room, huge bathroom, little garden was beautiful

Review 48:Excellent suite with balcony and a tremendous view. Excellent breakfast and friendly staff

Review 49:Couldn't get an internet connection. Will soon need a revamp

Review 50:Old world hotel , good value for money.

Review 51:It was really nice stay! Even I mistook my bus, they kindly made my reservation change. And room and staff are very nice! I love it.

Review 52:Everything was good

Review 53:Lovely old house, charming staff, wonderful location.

Review 54:Monsaraz é fantástico

Review 55:The property does not have somebody on hand to book you in. You have to phone a number, then you will either get an answering service or somebody who does not speak anything but Portuguese. We had to get the lady from the shop across the road to phone for us. The noise from the lounge room above our room was also a problem.

Review 56:A nice room in an excellent location. Go for a walk around the castle as the sun goes down.

Review 57:Our room was really huge, almost an apartment, but quite dark. Breakfast was poor and the management of the hotel leaves quite a bit to be desired. It was difficult to contact them before coming and when we got there we understood why: they are OK, but they don't seem to understand how to manage a hotel and deal with tourists

Review 58:Could do with larger bath towels

Review 59:Beautiful old Portuguese building with only {I think} three bedrooms, lovely terrace overlooking Aquava Dam. Huge beautiful bathroom.

Review 60:Difficult to find by driving. Watch out for the GPS which will take you on too-small streets instead of the bigger street that goes in one port (entry to the walled city) and out the other. Best idea is to first park outside the walls to walk in and check out the streets. Parking inside the walls is only allowed form 6PM to 11AM. Breakfast was OK, but could be improved with fresh juice and some local cheese & meats instead of the bland European/Dutch style.

Review 61:Room was huge with a bedroom, sitting area and giant bath. We spent some time in the upstairs sitting room where we could spread out maps and plan our next days' journey. Plenty of hot water. WiFi worked well. Owner and staff very friendly (but don't expect English from the lady who manages the place and the breakfast). At least 2 good restaurants nearby (easy walking distance).

Review 62:The rooms are not completely soundproof, but the hotel and the area was very peaceful. We just were next door to the breakfast room and could hear when they started to prepare it in the morning.

Review 63:Beautiful old house in the centre of Monsaraz with historical, peaceful charm. Lovely views towards Alqueva lake. Very friendly and helpful staff. Good breakfast. Wi-fi worked very well.

Review 64:We were there in January when the nights get cold. There were radiators but not operational. The heat exchanger worked well for the room but there was nothing in thxe bathroom and it was cold there. The shower wall was walled with cork, which is a great Portugese product, but once it got wet, the water got trapped and the mold appeared.

Review 65:This hotel is located in a charming, hiilltop walled village where cars aren't even allowed until after 1800. I think we were one of two rooms occupied the night we stayed. The breakfast was very nice. The Taverna O S Templarios restaurant, just up the street, and the waiter, Lius, were great.

Review 66:Absolutely fantastic. Very charming place - just next to the church in the small but magnificent town of Monsaraz. We got a room with a view to the landscape beneath Monsaraz and it was gorgeous. Fantastic to watch the different colours depending on the time of the day. The room was very nicely decorated and especially the bathroom was incredibly. They have maintained much of the old house in the room which we liked very much - is really looked good. The breakfast was superb and served at the table. Very fresh - still warm - bread, ham, cheese, nice coffee and warm milk, juice, cake, cereals and yoghurt. All of good quality. The staff do not speak English (however, the young girl in the reception speaks a little English). The staff are all very nice and welcoming - you really feel good in this charming place.

Review 67:The whole accomodation was a jewel. Feel at home, use the living-room and the kitchen. Our room was huge with an extra seating area and a big bathroom. In the middle of the small town, close to the castle. A good advice when coming with the car: park outside first and walk your way. The streets are small and you're not allowed inside with the car during the day.

Review 68:wonderful old town with lots of character. The accommodation was very nice & had wonderful views of the surrounding countryside & Alqueva lake. The casa was nice & central in the town. They also welcomed our dog who was travelling with us.

Review 69:The pillows were very lumpy. If they replaced the pillow, it would be perfect.

Review 70:A lovely inn inside the walls of the city. You park just outside, and it is not a far walk. The staff was so helpful, and the location was perfect.

Review 71:it was very clean staff was very kind and helpful the suite is fantastic (with balcony and view over the lake NL Het was heel netjes en proper, personeel was zeer vriendelijk en behulpzaam, de suite is geweldig met balkon en zicht op het meer (de andere kamers zijn kleiner en hebben meestal twee eenpersoonsbedden) Het is wel niet geschikt voor mensen die all-in op reis gaan, maar voor alle anderen is het een aanrader

Review 72:There was only one minor shortcoming, about which we actually laughed because everything else was so great: the wall in between the bathroom of room 2 and the breakfast room is not soundproof …

Review 73:A historical (renovated) house in the main street of Monsaraz. Location is perfect. The lady who owns the house is absolutely fabulous and endearing, and takes care of even the smallest details in the rooms and in the breakfast area. Even though we had not booked breakfast in advance, there was an amazing breakfast for us in the kitchen, with the freshest bread we ever got. We wish we could have thanked her properly and expressed our intense appreciation.

Review 74:parking is only available within the town walls between 6pm and 11am this information is not on the website.

Review 75:lovely hotel in a lovely little walled town with castle. clean, comfortable, we booked the suite which had 4 rooms and a balcony with views across the lake. It is possible to drive into the town to unload cars and there is plenty of parking outside the town walls.

Review 76:I liked everything.

Review 77:An interesting place to stay. My room was large, as was the bathroom. Excellent hot water in the shower. The room had TV and AirCon. Breakfast was simple but totally adequate, offering the normal selection in Portugal. What impressed me? Welcoming hot water and biscuits (I make my own coffee when I travel). A very large guest lounge on the first floor, offering large sofas and a huge TV. A well equiped kitchen that the guests could use. Overall, the stay was a very nice surprise. I recommend Casa Rural Santo Condestavel.

Review 78:Nothing

Review 79:Luis the manager was very friendly and helped us a lot with something that happens to us. The room was big and beautiful and verf clean. The breakfast was very good. It is a good place for a good price.

Review 80:Double bed a little short but ok.

Review 81:Most delightful relaxing and peaceful hilltop village with castle ruin, and lovely views over the dam lake and countryside, especially from the bar/restaurant near the entry. Charming residence to stay, nice breakfast. Would do it again

Review 82:The comfortable ambiance, the freedom to use the lounge and the garden. Great wifi reception. Great breakfast. Clean. Idyllic location and friendly town.

Review 83:The drive to the property is very rough and needs to be graded. Also it would have been nice if the half dead flowers were attended to.

Review 84:The property is set in a wonderful rural area and has lovely views. The casa offers a nice break after visiting large busy towns.

Review 85:Monsaraz is an amazing, magical place and Casa Rural Santo Condestavel, being located in such an old building, added to the magic. It was at the same time very comfortable and a wonderful location right in the center of this beautiful town so that you could walk everywhere.

Review 86:Nothing. Everything was perfect! Best stop of our travel.

Review 87:Spent 3 days in Decembre 2012. This place was awesome! Luis, the manager was a great host. The room located near the kitchen was large and comfy. Breakfast was also very good. Located in the small but amazing medieval village of Monsaraz, this place is a must to relax. The best restaurant is located to your right, three doors down. The plates are so big that you can share it between two people. Very well located to visit areas like Evora.
