Reviews for Milner Hotel Boston Common

Review 1:Excellent location and super considerate staff. Hotels in the same area would cost twice as much. 7-Eleven 1 minute away, Boylston and Tufts Medical Center T stations less than 5 minutes away. Extremely safe area situated near W Hotel, so it is easy to find. What more could you want?!

Review 2:Small room with window facing the building. Was a bit noisy-could hear the folks in the next room.

Review 3:Great location. Clean and comfortable beds. Safe for solo female traveller. Tufts T stop very close by.

Review 4:Room was tiny and the lights didn't work near the bed, so was in darkness mostly. The air conditioner is old and needs to be replaced.

Review 5:Very close to everything, seemed quite clean. Plus it had a laundry.

Review 6:I've been in this hotel but not mean is hotel it's kind of hostel the stuff who works there doesn't friendly at all my wife tried to make waffle but some of them spilt out and the woman who works there looked weird when my wife said sorry and doesn't respond my wife they speak rude.

Review 7:Just the located

Review 8:A couple of the staff were a bit on the brusque side. One in particular was a bit argumentative about some 8 year out of date brochures for the Hard rock Cafe. The location had changed and when I tried to walk over for dinner I was surprised to not find the restaurant. He was unsympathetic and displayed behavior I would think of as stereotypical New York. But it was just the one instance. Most staff were helpful and kind. I was worried that my door didn't automatically close all the way and on the last day I came back to my room to find my door unlatched. Everything was where it should be, but I was nervous about leaving my room after that.

Review 9:I liked the location. It was walking distance from the Commons and most every other place I wanted to go. The room prices were very reasonable. It's an old building so rooms are compact but I wasn't staying to visit the hotel so it suited my purposes quite well.

Review 10:Great location - walking distance to Boston Common, the Public Garden, lots of other attractions, close to public transit for further away locations. Good free breakfast. The wi-fi worked great and was free throughout the hotel. I had a single room, which admittedly was tiny as hotel rooms go but all I needed as I was on my own and basically just using the room to sleep, shower, and change clothes. I would stay here again!

Review 11:The cover of the heater in my room suddenly fall down at one night, it almost hurt me. The next day it still didn't be fixed. The manager help me to change the room at my third night. Their services were fine, but the utilities are a little bit old, so be sure to check you room when checking in.

Review 12:The breakfast is good.

Review 13:That single room is TINY, minimal storage (needed to stand on the bed to get to the clothes hangers!), no chair, awkward access to electrical outlets for charging. Creaky--but clean--bed. Fortunately, I've been in very small cruise ship cabins and other single hotel rooms, and the shower in my vacation cabin is as tiny as the one in this room, so I was okay with it.

Review 14:Excellent location--just a little off the beaten track from the big-name hotels, same access to restaurants, the arts, historical, transportation, etc. Good INCLUDED breakfast selections. Friendly, accommodating staff. Lots of (pay) parking available nearby.

Review 15:I left my cell phone when I check out. The roomkeeper may find it but never tell the front desk or call me back! (I use 'find my iPhone' app. It just showed me it's online in Boston this morning! I never take this phone out of my room. So it must be left inside! ) If the hotel staff can see this, plz call me at 256-856-3632. Thx

Review 16:The breakfast was weak and the area was to small for the amount of people trying to get breakfast. My room window A/C unit keep making a noise as if a rock or something was in it plus being close to the street we heard every police and fight from the drunks which I have to admit was somewhat entertaining.

Review 17:The Staff was outstanding, especially the night staff

Review 18:limited seats available for breakfast

Review 19:good location, walking distance to newbury st and boylston st, nice staff who helped me with luggage carrying and taxi order.

Review 20:My room on 2nd floor, it's like living in a cave, once you enter the room and you lost your phone signal and the wifi sometimes not working

Review 21:The location is very good

Review 22:Beds were "noisy" . They squeaked whenever you moved. Room was small. Parking is an issue.

Review 23:Breakfast was good. Location was great. Staff were pleasant and helpful. Checkin was simple.

Review 24:Very close to everything, excellent location. Great value for the money, $350 for an entire weekend including tax. Arrived Friday and left Monday. Rooms are very small but cute, its old fashioned and serves its purpose. We were out most of the time and I would not want to pay top dollar for a big name hotel. Would definitely stay here again. Staff was pleasant and rooms were clean. We were comfortable. Breakfast was good--and included for no additional fee.

Review 25:Total confusion when it came to paying the bill - no apology from the hotel even though my card was frozen as a result, real communication problem with the manager he didn't listen to a word i said. All the other staff apart from 1 were really lovely

Review 26:Nothing, water pressure wasn't great in the shower and we had to do a couple of trips in the lift when we all had our luggage, but it's an older style hotel so you would expect things like that.

Review 27:Loved the location, very close to Boston Common, historical sites, shopping and great places to eat!

Review 28:Poor facilities, noisy always, Toilet flush keeps randomly flushing and make noise regularly, could hear the subway noise regularly, there is no plug connection to connect charger, room extremely small compared to what they showed in ad. Breakfast was extremely bad. You could always hear people yelling outside the room and talking to each other. The air conditioner was not functioning. I'm extremely disappointed by my stay at Milner!

Review 29:Nothing

Review 30:It just would have been nice to have a chair in the room, but sitting on the bed is fine.

Review 31:A real gem with a great location, simple and clean, quiet . . . and all in a historic nineteenth-century hotel!

Review 32:The lack of hot water and the view of a side of a building from the window

Review 33:It was in a very central location of the city. Not a far walk from most places (i.e. the train station, restaurants, bars)

Review 34:Room too cramped. Paper thin walls. Street noise was very disruptive to sleeping. Difficulty entering room due to the way the door opened into the space.

Review 35:Location, location, location. The bathrooms and linens were clean. The bed was comfortable and the TV worked. Good breakfast. Printer availability. Discount to parking ramp.

Review 36:I didn't like the way the waffle maker stunk up the whole hotel like fried food at breakfast time.

Review 37:I liked the complimentary waters & breakfast!

Review 38:Some of the finishes on public area surfaces poor.

Review 39:Location excellent.Breakfast included represents great value and convenience. Reception rest room very clean and hygienic.

Review 40:The woman in the reception was very unfriendly when we checked in. The air conditioner was on 24/7 very noisy.

Review 41:Great location - close walk from Newbury. + free wifi always worked.

Review 42:Encountered one staff member who found my query regarding the availability of tea bags the biggest inconvenience on earth!

Review 43:Nice old English style hotel. All other staff were excellent and facilities were cosy and comfortable. Good value, including breakfast.

Review 44:The rooms are tiny! I'm only 5'3" and I had a hard time shutting the bathroom door behind me.

Review 45:The location was great! Right outside of the busiest part of downtown but still quiet enough.

Review 46:Rooms are small but comfortable and clean. Great trip overall!

Review 47:Great location. Staff really friendly. Complimentary breakfast is lovely (especially the waffles). Reasonable price

Review 48:The toaster knob was constantly breaking and our maid left the Disney Channel turned to Spanish on my birthday when we had planned to pop in to get warm and see a little tv before returning to Boston Commons tree lighting event. It might seem insignificant but I picked this hotel for the proximity, so we could pop in and back for this event. I couldn't figure it out myself. Although, I mentioned it and someone came by to fix it by the time we were back home. Friday night was also so loud from the 5th floor, I woke up many times.

Review 49:We loved the look of the old hotel, it's furniture and breakfast. It was also perfect that they offered two complimentary Poland Spring waters upon arrival. Also, we liked the computer room, Christmas tree and we felt safe there.

Review 50:Good hotel go stay for a short time. Its a very old building, but rooms are good (good bed, good shower) and quiet. A remarkable aspect: its one of the only hotels in Boston that I know that serves (a good) complimentary breakfast. Very good localization - close to theater's area in Boston and 2 min far from Boston Common. Nearest subway station is Tufts Medical Center (1 min).

Review 51:many fruit flies flying around in the room no outlets close to the bed stand we paid the full amount in cash, but no receipt until we checked out

Review 52:the breakfast was a lot more than expected. there was a lady that kept all the food filled location was excellent, close to chinatown, subway station. It is quite easy to find

Review 53:Small room with old uncomfortable furniture, unfriendly night receptionist. Coffee machine broken, pigeons nesting on A/C unit in window, broken shower mixer meant either boiling or cold water.

Review 54:My single room had a window on some sort of airshaft, which was not aesthetic: but at least it was very quiet with no street noise.

Review 55:This hotel is a 10-minute walk from South Station (airport bus connection) so I did not need a taxi to get to the airport. The nearby Boston Commons and Public Garden are conveniente for runners. Front desk staff were very cheerful and helpful with advice on walking to destinations. Bed was comfortable and shower was strong and hot.

Review 56:The A/C-heating unit was a bit noisier than I would like. The breakfast was rudimentary, but I could find enough to get my day started.

Review 57:All the basic comforts were there, and to me it was more important to be close to my business destination than to have a lot of room, so this was effective.

Review 58:Everything else. From linking sealing to horrible air conditioner. You had to choose get warm or sleep. I don't have a problem with cheap hotels, so you don't expect a lot. This place isn't cheap at all!!! So we were shocked... Here are some pictures.

Review 59:The location

Review 60:Double room is very small and has no space for enough furniture.. No chair to sit and relax.

Review 61:The hotel is at prime location, very close to Boston Common

Review 62:Mattress was worn out. The room was very small which was OK for me, but the airconditioner was sitting practically on the bed - not good.

Review 63:Friendly reception. Clean. Breakfast OK.

Review 64:The room is big enough for a short stay but would not be good for a long stay as storage space for hanging clothes is limited.

Review 65:The location was excellent and the price presented good value

Review 66:Overpriced (I have paid USD 208 for a night, more than in Sheraton I mooved following days ) old hotel with very small rooms (some noisy), poor breakfest without any hot meal or ham, slow internet.

Review 67:Good location near Boston Common.

Review 68:Some things are falling apart. i.e. bathroom fixtures, tub, shower, drains, bathroom sink. Really need to have "Mr. Fixit" drop by!

Review 69:The staff was outstanding!! Would return because of them.

Review 70:Location is excellent. Price for location is very fair. This is not a flash place but it was clean and bed was comfortable. Did the job and didn't break the bank.

Review 71:Parking problem, trouble finding it, check it clerk was unfriendly, room was small and an ineffective air conditioner had to run all night.

Review 72:Thought it was close but it was difficult to find.

Review 73:I liked everything about my stay. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Room size was good and the complimentary breakfast was very good. Was close to the subway

Review 74:I didn't mind so much, but others may think the rooms are small, as is typical in older hotels. Parking lot across the street was $40 overnight - you might want to look around a bit and find something cheaper.

Review 75:A "Comfort Inn style" breakfast was included (bagels, yogurt, waffle maker, etc.). Well-kept, but shows its age a bit.

Review 76:The night desk clerk knew nothing about the city and was not willing to look up anything. The room was so small a chair would not fit in it. It was advertised as "spacious" Not So!

Review 77:The breakfast was very good.

Review 78:We thought the hotel was dated. With a few, not so expensive improvements it would be so much more attractive. A closet wardrobe should be placed in the room, instead of the hanging feature just a few inches from the bed. There should be a mirror in the room. It would make the small room look larger and more interesting. The walls were bare, some artwork would enhance the room. Although the room was reasonably clean and there were some toiletries, it would have been good if there was a shower cap, that the toiletries were replaced after the first day. They should have real drinking glasses or nice plastic glasses and certainly no Styrofoam coffee cups...and no creamora...cream packets would suffice. The room we had was very noisy at night, since the Blue Men Group were playing next door. If possible we should have not been placed there if another room was available. After we asked we did get an extra hour for check out. They obviously can not do much of another venue nearby but they should have soundproof windows in these locations. The breakfast was minimum. The person that cleaned up after people the first day was very conscientious and pleasant. The next day the new person was not helpful and the area was not cleaned up after customers left the tables and the buffet table was not cleaned. The second person should have been supervised. Although there was only one person who did not appear to be doing a good job...it must be said that the check in person and the manager in the morning was very helpful and pleasant. If they could work on some of the bones of the place...it would be a very good place to hang your hat...and reasonable considering the other hotels available.

Review 79:We had tickets to the Wilber Theater and it was perfectly located for that purpose. It is also close to Boston Commons, the subway etc. If you are looking for the museum district it is a bit far...but still very doable. The check in and check out was good and the staff taking care of that was very helpful and pleasant.

Review 80:there were may nats flying around the room the bathroom was so tiny you cannot lift your arm to brush your teeth without hitting the wall, also the shower was tiny the lighting was very poor probably due to the brick wall out your window

Review 81:Arrived to glorious sunshine for November, greeted with warm welcome and complimentary chilled bottled water . Rooms spotless , free breakfast , staff very helpful . Have stayed here numerous times , 5 mins to Downtown , trains , 2mins from Boston Common.

Review 82:staff at checkin were very unwelcoming and really quite rude. One word questions asking for id and credit card. Hotels seems to pride itself on friendliness of staff - bad 1st impression. Other staff were better during daytime. Double bed is extremely small as was this room grade.

Review 83:Location was excellent. Beside Boston common & easy to walk to good shops restaurants and attractions.

Review 84:The room for breakfast is tiny and often crowded. The WIFI connection is poor.

Review 85:The Hotel is at walking distance of the main tourist sites and restaurants. The free continental breakfast.

Review 86:The room was not worth the amount of money. The night lady behind the desk was rude and was not helpful. She refused to give us extra pillows and blanket. We had to wait til morning to ask the nice lady at the desk for anything. They did not provide anything like silverware or condiments. When I asked for ketchup I was told they don't have it. I would have rather stayed at another hotel. We will not stay there again.

Review 87:The location.

Review 88:The room had no chair and you had to sit on the bed. You can imagine how sloped the bed was after every single person had sat on that side. There was no desk either. Instead there was a great big chest of drawers - completely unnecessary. There wasn't a bedside table either. The window couldn't close properly because of the AC unit so I had to jam a hand towel in the gap to stop the cold air blowing through the space onto me whilst in bed!

Review 89:Location

Review 90:Rooms are small; my room was fine for one, but would be quite close for two. Always seems to be noise out front, and the windows are not noise-insulated.

Review 91:Great location, generally nice staff. Good breakfast (for breakfasts of this kind). Rooms are small but (mostly) comfortable

Review 92:Uber-small single room was as represented in pictures. No room for chair or desk. Fine for a place to crash, but little utility for more than a one night stay or business trip. No relationship with local gym or fitness center, but two blocks from Freedom Walk.

Review 93:Staff was friendly and location was convenient.

Review 94:The room is extremely small and there is no door on the ensuite. The room was extremely hot (in Fall), the window does not open and the air conditioner is set on the windowsill which is next to the bed so if I turned it on I would freeze. I spent 3 very uncomfortable hot sweaty nights at the hotel and I think this contributed to me getting a cold.

Review 95:The location is convenient, the bed comfortable and the free breakfast fine.

Review 96:very small queen room very crowded breakfast space

Review 97:Friendly , enthusiastic and helpful welcome from innkeeper staff Sumptuous breakfast Beateous Boston Commons only 2 blocks away

Review 98:Would have liked reception areas and public areas to be recarpeted. They looked very dated.

Review 99:Location and willingness of desk staff to help out when a friend arrived later than expected and rooms may have needed to be rearranged.

Review 100:Honestly, i seldom write reviews for hotels I stay in but I had to for this won for the sake of warning of the truly awful value for money that this place provides. I paid $250/night to stay there. The room was about 150 sq. ft., if not smaller. There wasn't a door to separate the bathroom and the bedroom (which I've only seen in third world country), such that you were litterally sleeping next to a toilet bowl. There wasn't a central heating system, only an old dusty HVAC hanging from the window which was not automated (meaning you either had to sleep with the very loud constant noise of the HVAC, or sleep in the cold). The furniture was the kind that you find in dumpsters that even poor people refuse to grab. Overall, probably the worse experience i've had in a hotel in the developed world (worse than any motel i've ever been to). Stay away at all cost.

Review 101:The room we stayed in was extremely small and VERY noisy! Overlooking the street, every car/ siren/ voice seems to be amplified into the room during the night.

Review 102:My room was extraordinarily small, and actually located immediately off an uncarpeted exit stairwell, rather than off the main hallway. Very minimalist. The furnishings were clean but worn.

Review 103:The location in downtown Boston was within short walking distance of where I needed to be. Though not inexpensive, the room rate was less than half that of the 4 star hotels I was considering.

Review 104:I asked for some bottled water on my second of four nights and the night attendant wouldn't give me any, saying it was only given for the first night. I thought this was a real cheapskate move, considering I was paying over $1240 for four nights. We considered changing hotels at this point.

Review 105:I loved the fact that this was an old building with character and was in a great location.

Review 106:Very run down hotel and very expensive. Staff seemed disinterested. Carpets threadbare, lighting poor, general feeling of being very tatty. Well overpriced. Worst place we stayed in the us.

Review 107:T

Review 108:The Milner is old, but that only added to its charm.

Review 109:The staff was very friendly & helpful. Our room was small, but very clean & comfortable. We loved the location, probably the best value in town for this time of year.

Review 110:My single room was very small, had no view and was, in part, a bit delapitated. For example, the towel rail was falling off the wall, the chair's cover was thread bare, the bathroom sloped a bit... The breakfast was also very basic and everything was 'plastic', including the plates and cutlery. All of which you throw in a bin once you have finished.

Review 111:The Milner Hotel is excellently located and has some old time flair.

Review 112:Extremely noisy! Club behind my room was full of drunks and noisy ppl until 4:30 am. Machinery near construction at 7:00 am . Extremely small room and bathroom . Not mentioned in the description AT ALL ! Location great however hardly any sleep ! Don't recommend !

Review 113:Location and staff

Review 114:My room was so small that I barely had room to turn around. No place to sit and work on computer. Bed was fine for small person like me, but anyone else a disaster.

Review 115:Great location and low price. Free breakfast.

Review 116:The room really not properly cleaned, there were three pieces of stray long hair stuck on the wall next to the bathtub throughout the whole duration of my stay (4 nights). The bedsheet they never changed. The bed very far from comfortable, very poor quality with no support, blanket not warm enough, asked for additional blanket made little difference. The heating is an aircon and my skin was cracking and sore throat after keeping it on for more than half hour. The noisiest room I had no. 313 at the back. You would have thought it will be quieter, but oh no!!! The noise usually start around 12am, its inside and outside, its like a riot....screaming, yelling, violent sounding noises, banging doors, shouting all the way till 4.30am!! Every night like this. So not sure if the rooms in the front any better. Best way to blend out the noise is to keep your tv switched on with a decent volume. Water coming from the shower is like dribbling with no force, not to mention u will have to turn on the tab for over 5 minutes to get the water warm, and if you want to shower after 11pm, the water is only warm and not hot water at all....considering it really is rather cold outside, you would like to get back to have a nice hot shower, this hotel does not really provide for that. The price of the hotel not cheap, however, the condition of the whole hotel is screaming for an upgrading, think the most important is the bed plus bedding and the shower/tap water system. Can't believe that they do not think is necessary.

Review 117:Convenient location. Staff were helpful, especially the lady receptionist in the morning. The others were rather quiet, though I have no complain. Hairdryer very powerful, room has ironing facilities. Good wifi and free!!

Review 118:Very tired, dated decor with peeling plasterwork etc. Very noisy and bed creaky and not too comfy.

Review 119:Great staff, especially guy on the desk (sadly didn't get his name). So friendly and went out of his way to help us. Great location and good parking in multi storey across the road (get discount voucher from hotel).

Review 120:The price is too high for a 2-star. Hotel is tired, needs updating. They only gave us one soap for three people. The sofa bed is bumpy. The heater is LOUD (couldn't leave it on at night, as it woke us up) and blasts a lot of air at intermittent intervals, but it's not always hot. Carpet is not an ideal choice in public spaces.

Review 121:Location is great for visiting the Commons and the Markets (Quincy/Faneuil). Shopping is also nearby. Connections to public transit are decent. Breakfast options were good.

Review 122:Some desk staff very surly. Tiny rooms, no cupboard - just a hanging rail with a few coat hangers. Broken tiles in shower room. Shower was just a tepid trickle. Stained and cracked polystyrene ceiling tiles. Air conditioner placed in window space - so unable to fully close window and stop draughts. Very noisy street .

Review 123:Good location, buffet breakfast

Review 124:Halls, elevator, and room were tiny. Luggage stand would only fit in closet. My bedside table was the windowsill. Queen size bed took up the entire room. Not for the clostrophobic!!

Review 125:Staff was friendly and helpful. Room was clean. Bathroom was remodeled.

Review 126:Very cramped bathroom, slanting bathroom shelf (watch and earring slid into toilet but were rescued), toilet running on and off.

Review 127:Very friendly staff, very clean.

Review 128:Hotel really tired. Carpets dirty and lots of little repairs and maintenance issues that need attention. Loose tiles in bathrooms, wall paper coming off walls. Not great value for money.

Review 129:Staff were friendly

Review 130:The entrance and foyer are looking tired and after a very long flight, we arrived at 10.30pm and found the receptionist to be surly and unwelcoming. This did colour our early impressions of the hotel. Other staff encountered during our stay were very helpful and engaging.

Review 131:We found the location ideal. It was relatively quiet but only a short walk from the attractions of the city centre.

Review 132:Arrived a little early, tired after a long-haul flight and the receptionist at that time was surly and unhelpful, although we did manage to leave our bags. Other staff more friendly and helpful. Rooms are small but adequate for our needs.

Review 133:Good location - walking distance to many attractions, Boston Common and theatres

Review 134:The room was very small. Ground floor room that faced the noisy street. The bed was right up against the window that had an air conditioner in it. Would not go back.

Review 135:Staff was pleasant

Review 136:Breakfast sounds a little poor 4 for me.

Review 137:Milner is located near from almost everything in Boston, subway, freedom trail, harbor, south station. Etc. Its a very nice quiet hotel. If you r looking for a place to spend the night in a comfortable & celan room, this is your choice!!
