Reviews for Casa Calhau Grande
Review 1:It would be nice to have some tea or coffee and sugar in the kitchen before arrival.
Review 2:Our cottage had a great view, sunrises and sunsets were great. The beds were comfortable, the owners are very friendly and helpful. The place overall is very well maintained, the garden, the pool area, plans and cottages. Wifi works great, Internet is fast. Location is great, beach is 10 min drive, air is clear and fresh.
Review 3:Lots of cats come uninvited into the cottage at every opportunity so it was difficult to have the windows open. Had no hot water for 2 days. When trying to report it phone calls were either not answered or the phone was immediately put down. Emails went unanswered. In the end we put a note under the office door (it was always unmanned when we went out in the morning and when we returned.) The double bed looked out through double french windows in the cottage. These were the only windows. The town is very quiet. The drive up to the property is very steep and parking is awkward. They took days to acknowledge receipt of payment although they were quick enough to ask for it.
Review 4:Beautiful sea views. Very pretty gardens. Private.
Review 5:Bed was a bit hard. Smell of fresh paint.
Review 6:Beautifully renovated old buildings, tasteful furnishings, lovely gardens, plenty of space, friendly welcome, love of detail.
Review 7:One must be prepared to drive on very steep, narrow roads, but that goes for the whole of Madeira! The parking space of Calhau Grande is an adventure in itself, I would not have been able to do it without a second pair of eyes :)
Review 8:The family running Casa Calhau Grande are generous, helpful and down-to-earth. We had a bad experience with our rental car breaking down on the way from the airport to Calheta, and Sophia made us feel so well taken care of when we finally arrived, many hours too late. Our cottage, Eira, was everything we ever dreamed. We wanted something secluded, and even though there were guests inhabiting all the other cottages (as well as one being renovated!) we sometimes felt we were the only people there!

Review 10:what a lovely place. small scale tourism at its best. we had our own private house on the property with a nice ocean and garden view. very clean, specious and relaxed athmosphere. a most go if you are seeking relaxation, silence and a natural environment away from the busy allday life.
Review 11:Nothing really
Review 12:Great location, fantastic views, comfy appartments, a lot of privacy, and friendly staff. We visited Calhau Grande for 5 nights, and it was a delight, really relaxed stay. We should have booked a couple of days extra.
Review 13:There were no toiletries in the bathroom and we had to buy our own toilet paper.
Review 14:The view from our cottage,Eira, was spectacular. The family that runs the cottages were very helpful and willing to assist in anything we needed. We could use the herbs in the garden for our teas and meals. We liked the environmentally friendly approach of the hotel, re-using materials and composting. There is a mini market about 200-300 meters from the cottages and the supermarket is a 10 minute drive. Funchal is a 30min drive.
Review 15:As others have mentioned, there are some very "vocal" dogs in the neighborhood who seem to not sleep ever.
Review 16:Absolutely wonderful setting, phenomenal views, the property is amazing - even though it was full when we were there, we felt like we were alone and had lots of privacy. Every window/terrace looks out to the sea - stunning views any time of the day. The garden is wonderful, every detail has been considered. Really a breathtaking setting, it was hard to leave. I am very glad we chose to stay there and forgo the big hotels. But pack light - getting the bag up the hill from the parking lot is no joke.
Review 17:The bed could have been a little more comfortable and possibly have an oven as well as a hob as we wanted some things that were difficult to cook on the hob. But not something that would stop us coming again!
Review 18:We absolutely loved staying at Calhau Grande, the rural setting was just what we needed to relax! However we would recommend hiring a car to get around the island. The hostess (Sofia) welcomed us upon arrival and she or her mother were always happy to help us with any questions we had. It was very peaceful and we loved our cottage. Didn't want to leave!

Review 20:View, beautiful garden
Review 21:The layout and views
Review 22:nothing
Review 23:The house, the view, parkingspace, the hospitality, the warm reception
Review 24:cottage pool view peaceful atmosphere
Review 25:There were tiny ants in the kitchen.
Review 26:We stayed 5 days in a room called "Junior" in April 2014.The property is situated in a peaceful and picturesque countryside location, on a slope.Approaching the first time, it is not very easy to find using GPS because some roads along the coast are closed and also there is a new tunnel not known to GPS, so try using maps instead.Geographically, this is a good base to explore west and north of Madeira. Quite close to Rabacal with its popular "25 fontes" and waterfall levadas.Being there looks and feels like living in a wonderful garden. We were allowed to use some plants from the garden for the tea.We enjoyed peaceful evenings watching the sunset. In the morning we heared good morning cocks.Definitely need a car to stay here. Calheta beach (one of the very few sand beaches in Madeira) is 10 minutes down by car. You won't find around any kiosk with souvenirs for tourists, even near the beach.Hosts Sophia and Fabio were very friendly and hospitable and made us feel like at home.
Review 27:Nothing
Review 28:What a wunderful place to stay, we just loved it. Sophia and her family where just fantastic. We stayed in house Sol, it's at the top of a STEEP slope, Fabio helped us with all the luggage. Sophia loaded us with information, answered all our questions and made sure we had all we could possibly need. The next day her mother supplied us with fresh eggs from their chickens, freshly picked broad been from the garden and fruit from their trees. She showed us her beautiful house and all the work they had done. I will go back one day!
Review 29:One does need a car to go to a restaurant. But this is often the case when on a rural site.
Review 30:Very nice surrounding. Sofia is very friendly and helpful. Beautifull accomodation. Nice pool. Lovely garden. Very nice terrase at the studio. Impressive view on the sea.
Review 31:We have spent 5 days on Madeira and have seen may places and villages, but more we have seen more and more we were getting convinced that were staying in the best place!!! Good location, easy parking, unbelievable ocean views, calm place, very nice cottage and complex itself. And the owners of the hotel – is the best host you can imagine, Sofia is the best memory about an island. Highly recommended, very special and romantic place.
Review 32:A lovely place to stay! Great mixture of modern architecture and traditional stone house, high above the sea with a marvellous view over the ocean from the balcony and from the bed... The garden and pool area is even more beautiful than on the pics. There is everything you need for cooking, small supermarket up in Loreto (which serves great coffee as well!). Thank you for your warm welcome in Calhau Grande ... and for the lift back to Funchal!
Review 33:very nice apartment, much privacy, nice view. Warm welcome at arrival. Perfect swimming pool
Review 34:Nothing not to like
Review 35:Location, view, facilities, friendliness, Wi-Fi, peace
Review 36:Best vacation ever, definitely recommended! Only it is necessary to rent a car as it is quite far away from the airport.
