Reviews for Casa Das Obras

Review 1:Only good things to say!

Review 2:The owner was most friendly and welcoming. Upon our enquiries she provided a history of her family and her historic family home which has been fully renovated to meet our current comfort needs while maintaining the grandeur of past days. The dining room has been left with original wood ceiling and painting...beautiful. The breakfast was quite amazing!! This is a definite stay...especially for those who enjoy a bit of history.

Review 3:If someone asked me what was the best experience in our trip to Manteigas and Serra da Estrela, I would doubtlessly say that it was Casa das Obras. A fantastic place to stay in this little town. The hostess (the owner) of the house is very caring and helpful to really make you feel at home. The bedrooms, the living area, the game room, the dining room - every corner of this house is full of details from its almost 3 centuries of history. Breakfast was also something to remember - apart from common food there were some local specialties like cheeses and cakes. I would surely recommend this place for a stay.

Review 4:Nothing

Review 5:Amelia was the most charming hostess in our trip to Portugal, sharing her cake recipes, which I am happy to report have been a hit with my family back home in Australia

Review 6:Historic aspects of the property and family heirlooms so well cared for. Didn't need to drive for days, could walk straight on to the hills, different route everyday. Owner going out of her way to assist. Food fantastic.

Review 7:it's an old classic bed, but making a bit too much noise

Review 8:one of the most beautiful and best places I ever stayed. Beautiful old house, nice breakfast, swimmingpool in beautiful garden

Review 9:We spent two enjoyable nights in this ancient, elegant eighteenth-century manor house, located at the top of a steep cobbled street in the Portuguese mountain town of Mantiegas. Our hostess offered us tea, cake and cookies on our arrival, and a sumptuous breakfast in the morning, as well as advice on the best restaurants in town. In addition to our lovely bedroom overlooking a garden, there were several charming common rooms, including one with a pool table and a sixteenth century alcove. We spent one afternoon in the idyllic garden across the street, picnicking by the pool and swimming. On our last morning we had to leave early and Mrs. Amelia packed us a breakfast to go. Highly recommended!

Review 10:Driving up steep cobbled streets to get there, and parking in front of the home on a steep narrow street.

Review 11:What a treat to stay in a beautifully restored 16th-18th century mansion! The hostess, whose family has owned the place for hundreds of years, is gracious and welcoming, and the home is lovely and comfortable. Scrumptious breakfast is served in the grand dining room, where you get to meet the other guests who come from far and wide.

Review 12:One of the nicest places we stayed in all of Portugal. The owner was extremely friendly; beautiful room; wonderful breakfast complete with fresh figs from the property.

Review 13:the rooms themselves are a bit old fashioned, although that does fit with the place. The only thing not so good was that we had to stay in another room for one night and the move to our originally booked room. We did not get discount for that. Even though the owner is really friendly, this was for us not so nice, since we had a long travel and then had to move to another room again while we were there to relax.

Review 14:Beautiful environment, the pool and garden at very nice. The breakfast was great

Review 15:Wish I had more days booked !!

Review 16:Everything ! Host is amazing (Mrs Amelia), hotel is an 18th century villa (?) and it feels like it the minute you walk in the door. Great for kids (pool table, swimming pool etc). Breakfast top drawer. Read some reviews about it being dark, no air conditioning - but that helps keep the feel of this 18th century building. Also parking is tight - but this is Portugal, what do you expect ? And there is a decent restaurant nearby. And yes, the pool is unheated - but if you don't like it, don't get in.

Review 17:This place is really more than nice. We all felt like in family there, our guest was charming and willing to take time to give us good advice on where to eat, what we should see, which trail and when to start... breakfast is also very good, and we could spend relaxing time in the garden close to the swimming pool. We definitely recommend this place!

Review 18:everything! beautiful, unique building and rooms, super friendly and helpful host, great location, nice breakfast, additional little treats like tea and cake (all day), and the backyard was also wonderful to relax after hiking.

Review 19:The pool was a bit cold, but that was a minor inconvenience as we were more interested in soaking up the sun anyway.

Review 20:The hotel itself is charming. It feels like an old castle, with rooms dating back all the way to the 16th century. The common areas (pool table, sitting rooms, breakfast, etc.) are excellent and a great place to unwind after a long day of hiking or skiing. The host was very kind and sweet. Breakfast was great.

Review 21:Parking around the hotel can impose a problem because of all the small, narrow and *very* steep streets.

Review 22:The old house and the way the 18th century details are preserved is very nice. You feel more like a guest in a home than at a hotel. The breakfast was excellent with great variety

Review 23:The house itself was incredible and interesting. And the owner was friendly and eager to help and to talk about the history of the home. Breakfast was over the top...everything was lovely and done with such care. The price was more than reasonable. Loved it!

Review 24:Just an amazing place to stay, the house has incredible. Amelia made us very welcome in her family home. The breakfast was fantastic, with so much choice. Don't stay if you want high tech fancy chain type hotel, as you won't find it. But if you want to stay in a place of history you have it here.

Review 25:The vintage house with original furniture and paintings made us feel like we were in a museum. The host is very friendly and caring. The breakfast was comparable to a 5-star hotel.

Review 26:We arrived with 3 young children and the staff was very kind andaccommodating. We all had a great time staying in a "castle"as the kids called it. The common areas are superb and the game room isgreat for all ages. We had some highly competitive chess matches andpool games. The place is very comfortable, great breakfast, and theatmosphere cannot be beat!! Highly recommended. Area around Mantiegas isalso great and very recommended for a visit.

Review 27:quite difficult to get there because of very narrow streets in the old town

Review 28:the management, the breakfast the surroundings - a very old "palace"

Review 29:The taps need re-washering but this did not bother us.

Review 30:the character of a very old building- this place is not for everyone so read the description before booking. For us it was excellent and the garden plus facilities are part of the attraction.

Review 31:Very beautiful old house. The owner was very kind and helpful and set up a great breakfast spread every morning. The location is perfect -- right above the church.

Review 32:Good location outside Coimbra. Hostess is just amazing - very friendly, careful and welcoming. We felt like visiting our best friends:) Room for 3 persons was with extra bed with view to small church, bedroom very spacious. Breakfast was good, with home-made jams, fruits from Rosa's garden and cake - some pieces was given for lunch. And all guesthouse smells of cinnamon and lavender.

Review 33:Rooms clean but dated. Pillows small and hard. Room lighting was too dim.Terrible parking.

Review 34:Extraordinary gardens and pool area. medieval ambiance.Warmth of staff. Opulent brrakfady

Review 35:The hotel is a very old and elegant building with wonderful furnishings and a stately ambiance.

Review 36:Excellent choice at breakfast, amazing architecture and decor from another century, cozy fireplace reading room with hot drinks and cake

Review 37:none

Review 38:Everthing, highly recommended

Review 39:Nothing.

Review 40:Hospitality of landlady and the historical atmosphere of the house.

Review 41:Rooms are OK but all the rest is just superb ! The family who runs this small hotel make you feel at home and help you in any way they can.

Review 42:Nothing in particular

Review 43:The location is perfect to visit the Serra da Estrela, the swimming pool, it's a quiet place

Review 44:Charming old house which atmosphere brings you to the past. Very friendly host, good breakfast & beautiful surroundings.

Review 45:Excellent breakfast, beautiful old house. Spacious lounges to relax.

Review 46:Room was a bit dark ( very small window with not a lot of natural light).

Review 47:Very charming old house, nice staff and amazing breakfast !

Review 48:Beautiful house. Very nice reception.

Review 49:No air condition

Review 50:Interesting old family owning house with it's history. Very clean rooms/bathrooms. High reccomendation.

Review 51:the atmosphere, the big nice table with great breakfast, the history of the place, the owner, the pool

Review 52:No good local restaurants

Review 53:Location and ambience of the manor

Review 54:Bedroom was dark with low ceilings and only 1 window

Review 55:The home itself

Review 56:The way we were treated by the staff.

Review 57:N/A!

Review 58:Fresh home breakfeast ;-) and the environment on the house divisions...

Review 59:Everyone staying there was complaining about WiFi... had to go to lobby and then still very poor.

Review 60:location, room was fine

Review 61:The room. Was not so confortable. The WC had some dirt.

Review 62:The simplicity and the history about the house.

Review 63:Nothing I didn't like

Review 64:Restored house fab setting.

Review 65:Everything. Go there!

Review 66:A little difficult to find depending on which way you enter the town. Parking could be a little difficult if the street outside is full but a free parking area is only a short walk away.

Review 67:We loved the whole ambience of this 18th century building. Our room was spacious, spotlessly clean and furnished in keeping with age of the building. The bed was very comfortable with quality linen and the quiet location made for a very good nights sleep. The breakfast buffet was extensive with lots of fresh choices and good quality items. Free Good strong and reliable wifi service.

Review 68:The only down side was that during our 2 days there we never found a restaurant that we liked. Nothing to do in the town but the scenery around made up for it.

Review 69:We fell in love with this B&B! The historic building is like living in a museum. Even though we booked last minute and had a small room that was 1/2 below the street & a bit dark it was very comfortable with 2 great beds, plenty of space & storage, a mini-fridge, nice bath with plenty of hot water, and WiFi that worked well. However enjoyed the pretty, comfortable living area to drink a glass of wine and I got hooked on an English language movie on the large flat screen TV there. Our hostess was very welcoming - always offering help in limited but entirely understandable English. She kept the house decorated with fresh flowers from the garden. The breakfast was one of the best we had in my 5 weeks in Portugal. Lots of fruits, breads, cheeses, meats, cake, jams, cereals, etc. There are several public areas, places to sit, play games, watch TV, free coffee/tea/biscuits available all the time - and even a microwave and small fridge to use. It was cold so we didn't get a chance to go out in the garden. I booked one night and as soon as we arrived and had a look, extended for a 2nd night. Would liked to have stayed on, but it wasn't possible. Most of the guests seemed to spend their days hiking. We relaxed and did some long drives (VERY scenic) around the mountains.

Review 70:We have nothing at all to complain about

Review 71:Casa das Obras is a fantastic place! The house is a living museum and the owner an extremely dedicated person. We enjoyed every moment and hope to be back again another time.

Review 72:This was a truly wonderful place to stay, in the heart of Manteigas. It is not really a hotel: the centuries old house is something between a museum (perhaps not ideal for small children?) and a private home in which the guests are free to come and go. The rooms are furnished with antiques but with modern comfort and super beds, and completely quiet and spotlessly clean. The friendly and charming owner provided a magnificent breakfast buffet in the splendid dining room. We loved everything here.

Review 73:It was a real honour to stay in such a special family place. Casa Das Obras has a wonderful atmosphere and history. Amalia was very kind, helpful and welcoming. We will return.

Review 74:Nothing it was perfect

Review 75:Absolutely stunning accommodation with a fantastic welcome and a lovely breakfast we would definitely recommend this. One of the best places we have stayed

Review 76:The Casa Dos Obras was a wonderful experience. It is a 17th Century manor house that has been lovingly restored complete with antiques in lovely comfortable rooms. Our hostess/owner was friendly and very helpful. The breakfast was incredible complete with delicious homemade jams, tarts and other treats. We hiked the trails around Manteigas and it was so great to be able to return to Casa dos Obras!

Review 77:What a fantastic find have never stayed in such a beautiful old building. Hosts were very proud of their house and were pleased to share it with us. Port and wine waiting in room at small extra charge. Pool table chess and swimming pool all foc.

Review 86:The Casa is fascinating and the garden and pool is an added bonus on a hot day. The house is built of heavy stone so is cool on a hot day. The breakfast was amazing with homemade cakes and other specialties.

Review 88:Everything. From the breakfast to the quality of the house itself. Absolutely amazing. The owner is the most pleasant person ever. Would stay at Casa das Obras again for sure.

Review 89:Adorei a Sra. Amelia ! Alem das melhores dicas para jantar/almoçar, tambem nos lugares a visitar. Nada a apontar ! A casa em si é simplesmente excelente e super relaxante. Aconselho a casais e familias. Adoramos !

Review 90:Great small hotel, if you are staying in the area then stay here. Friendly host. Large well equipped bedroom. Atmospheric and beautiful historic old house yet has luxury room with free pool table music, chess set etc. and tv room with fire. Yet these rooms are far enough away not to keep guests awake at night.
