Reviews for Casa das Penhas Douradas Design Hotel & SPA
Review 1:Very far and the constant fog means that it takes a long time to reach. Even Manteigas, the closest town is far and the road is not easy in bad weather.
Review 2:The inside and outside environment. Staff is very nice.
Review 3:Nothing
Review 4:Great place to relax and enjoy the Serra da Estrela views. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Restaurant is excellent! It is worth the value Facilities are great: they even provided a baby robe
Review 5:Very very quiet, perfect if you want a place to relax and enjoy the surrounding nature - for some can be a tiny bit too isolated. Very complete breakfast. A nice touch is the free afternoon snack/tea time, complete with croissants, milk, and a good selection of teas. Very nice and helpful staff! All around, one of the best stays since using Booking :)
Review 6:Charge for compulsory swimming caps
Review 7:Superb location. Well designed with generous patios and comfy chairs. Good snacks and drinks available free of charge all day with honesty box for alcoholic drinks.
Review 8:If I had to choose one thing, I didn't realize how far the hotel is to get to. In the end though, it is worth it.
Review 9:The modern architecture, the friendly staff, the food, the view
Review 10:No car park shade. The 30 Euro set menu dinner main course of pork was served cold and flavourless. The starter was similar although less bad. Too many badly lit steps/corridors. Had to return to room from spa twice to get the sauna turned on.
Review 11:the location and the spa facilities
Review 12:We changed room because the room with balcony is too small.
Review 13:The general atmosphere of the hotel. The possibility of having a coffeebreak throughout the day. The quality of the food.
Review 14:can't remember ;)
Review 15:The Hotel, the location, the "everyday little things" that were left in our room and made us feel very welcome and special
Review 16:Design of the hotel, beauty of the environment, quietness. Especially the mountain lake was fantastic and a very positive surprise. The diner had star quality.
Review 17:The size of the hotel is perfect and the fact that they have 3 living rooms with a fire place each, makes it real homey. The design of the hotel gives it a real exclusive feeling. Also the surrounding nature makes it really tranquil and perfect for hiking and cycling.
Review 18:Wish we could have stayed longer .
Review 19:From the moment we checked in we were treated superbly well by all the staff . Food in the restaurant was exceptional and the best we had during our tour of Portugal . Outstanding views from our room.
Review 20:None
Review 21:The pool. We liked the simple atmosphere, Scananavian style and design. The food was absolutely delicious and we appreciated the personal attention to our dietary needs. Fantastic staff!
Review 22:Nothing bad to say.
Review 23:Location is peaceful and beautiful. The facilities within the hotel are more than I expected and will certainly not forget this place.
Review 24:One of the best experiences we've had! Working in turism, we stay in many hotels, the service here is better then in most 5* hotels. A fantastic attention to detail, in service as well as the food and decoration of the hotel.
Review 25:We only found Serra's cheese here. There should be more portuguese Serra's traditional plates and fewer international gourmet. Gastronomy from the region is one of the best things to offer!
Review 26:Warmed indoor pool, deep simpathy and attention to little details: fuit juice and snacks available, other gifts
Review 27:We arrived in August and the hotel has a definite winter/skiing feel.. So very cosy for winter perhaps but a little strange in the summer. The staff were helpful but the hotel has a very serious feel to it. For us the biggest ' fault' is the dinner. The gourmet dinner does not quite live up to its name & was rather disappointing. Unfortunately, it is the only choice as no other places to eat near by.
Review 28:The hotel had a beautiful view. Rooms cosy and the beds very comfortable. The pool was nice.
Review 29:This is not a dislike but a warning, don't come here if you're up for a lively experience. It's definitely all about relaxation.
Review 30:Located at the top of the mountain the views are fantastic. Whilst the plywood decor everywhere takes a little getting used to the way the rooms are designed with large picture windows which open out onto the grassed communal area. But the best thing about this place was the food. It's not quite, but not far off Michelin star quality, and although not the cheapest in Portugal we both felt well worth the money.
Review 31:Rooms are rather on the small side (we were in one of the "cork" rooms) and there is no room safe
Review 32:At first we didn't feel at home at this hotel, it feels like it should be in Finland (very scandic look & feel to it) and at first glance rather basic. Fortunately we stayed for 4 nights and by day two loved it. Its definitely a bit quirky but that gives it its own character. The food was of a (surprisingly) high standard and they have a decent and reasonably priced wine list. The setting at 1950 meters is superb and I can thoroughly recommend the four hour circular walk, and also taking in the wider surrounding area. Fresh bottle of water twice a day in the room.
Review 33:The only bad thing was that we stayed only one night. I hope to get there again!
Review 34:It was completely wonderful, an idyllic mountain retreat. Impeccable service in beautiful, relaxed surroundings. Superb evening meal!
Review 35:This was a greAt place to stay with everything there--swimming pool, hiking trails, fabulous meals, great staff.
Review 36:Charging for coffees. Rooms are very small for the price
Review 37:Funky building in a great location high in the mountains.
Review 38:Nothing Only the possibility of do the ementa in bedroom
Review 39:Everything was perfect
Review 40:Nothing at all.
Review 41:Very helpful and attentive staff. An excellent location to do some hiking and outdoor activities.
Review 42:Nicely decorated, Staff are very nice and helpful,
Review 43:The size os portions at dinner ir small, even beeing a pre set menu.
Review 44:Is good for relaxing and do nothing.
Review 45:Nice design, wonderful landscape, perfect service, excellent breakfast, good value for money
Review 46:No air conditioning...
Review 47:Beautiful location, unique hotel, super clean, amazing design, lovely sitting areas (inside and out). A fantastic stay.
Review 48:Absolutly everything! Very warm and welcoming, design, food and wine, pool, sauna, suroundings... And, and, and....
Review 49:Too many babies and children
Review 50:The food was excellent, very good cook with sophisticate menus.
Review 51:good food (nice to meat the chef); cocktails included! Useful maps supplied for walks in the vicinity.
Review 52:Second year staying at this hotel ,the ambiance and service are superb.Dinner is a set menu with limited choice but the food is excellent. The staff are most helpful
Review 53:Rooms are not as spacious as they seem in the photos. Children are not allowed in the swimming pool after 18h30m.
Review 54:This hotel is great for a short stay and for relax. You will be permanently surprised with details. I think that details are really what makes a difference here. The staff is great and willing to do all they can to make your stay memorable. And Serra da Estrela is simply wonderful in this time of the year! If you can, do one of the proposed walking tours. You will not regret!
Review 55:As a solo traveller I tend to be more attentive to service as when traveling as a couple. After my experience the Casa das Penhas Douradas is also suitable for people traveling alone and needing a break from the information overload of the cities. During the time of my stay (weekdays, end of april) the place was very quiet. Besides the delicious and always beautifully arranged meals, the kind and helpful staff and the wonderful view from my room I have to mention the well indicated trails (in Portuguese and English) in the wild landscape around the hotel to discover the local flora and fauna. Bring you hiking boots along!
Review 56:Would just suggest perhaps to have a choice of pillows (soffter - harder) to make it even more comfortable.
Review 57:Location, extremely cozy hotel, with very friendly and helpful staff. Small "treats" in the room made our stay even more special and shows how thoughtful the staff are with the guests. Extremely relaxing atmosphere, and a special place to enjoy the surrounding nature.
Review 58:Be cautious regarding the access to the hotel, as it is located up in the mountain (1500m high) and when it snows you need some time to get there safely.
Review 59:This is a great hotel, with a very friendly atmosphere and a superb design and decoration. Every corner has an interesting detail, with a great selection of books and films to relax a bit further.
Review 60:Nothing to dislike. The drive up the mountain was rather hair-raising.
Review 61:Beautifully designed creatively using local wool and wood, hotel blends into high arid park with huge boulders. Staff is extremely helpful. Food is gourmet. Pool is lovely. Most comfortable beds we have ever slept in. Lovely views.
Review 62:Stairs make it difficult for the luggage and anyone with walking difficulties.
Review 63:This is an excellent hotel. The buildings are beautifully designed and the room very comfortable, including the bed. There are lovely touches such as fruit in the room, pre dinner cocktails, and port and supper in your room after dinner. There is a set menu for dinner, but the hotel happily changed one of the courses for us. The weather was bad when we were there, but the hotel environment was so beautiful it didn't matter.
Review 64:There is no information how far the hotel was and we felt a little lost but fortunately we saw 2 men and they told us the hotel location.
Review 65:They are very friendly, the food is fantastic, really, the hotel is wonderful.
Review 66:The staff was always ready to help, but on the personal grounds, I think they could be a little bit less reserved and less serious :)
Review 67:Everything! This hotel is a hidden gem - we found it by accident as we wanted to visit Monsanto and were looking for a hotel somewhere not too far. Finally, we even prolonged the reservation to 2 nights, as the hotel looked really nice. The hotel grounds and interior design are superb, breakfast buffet, the afternoon tea/coffee service with home made cakes and dinners are excellent, although dinner is quite costly and you have to choose the full menu of the day. The service is wonderful, nearly too much. So what did we like most? Little tasty suprises left in your room before night, the food, the design, the atmosphere, the views from the terraces and the around the hotel.
Review 68:The location is a bit far off, very isolated with nothing but empty houses around. Nonetheless, it is good to relax away from everything.
Review 69:The hotel is very cosy and well decorated. All the staff were friendly and efficient. Excellent food is served in the restaurant.
Review 70:Lovely place; superb installations, very classy. Staff are the bestever, so friendly and ready to help, like nowhere else I´ve seen.food is excellent, something to look forward to. very classy and homey place. will definitely go back asap.
Review 71:We loved everything about this hotel. The stylish, modern decor was beautiful and the bed extremely comfortable. The food in the restaurant was absolutely delicious and they even gave us a wonderful picnic to take on our walk. The views on the walk were sensational. We did the 4 hour walk and had a lovely swim in the lake before walking up the hill back to the hotel. Had a great sauna and swim back at the hotel to recover.great place to spend a few days.
Review 72:Good location on the highs of Serra da Estrela, good facilities and room. The restaurant have a very good chef with a gourmet daily menu presenting surprises every day.
Review 73:The size of our rooms where quite small although designed to make the most out of the space available. Our spa experience was a little below our expectations.
Review 74:The overall experience was very positive. The room and the hotel overall was clean, the bed was comfortable and the dinners especially greatly exceeded our expectations. The overall design of the hotel was also pleasing. It is probably the best place to stay if you are visiting the Serra da Estrela and want to stay within the park.
Review 75:An exquisite boutique hotel in a beautiful location. The view from theroom is unique, airplane like, you may see Spain. Warm and nicepersonnel. The dinner (35 eur per person) is delicious. Manyopportunities for easy hiking.
Review 76:difficult to find. would be comfortable to know that it is at 1500 heigth and half an hour from the village. But worth driving up. We were lucky with the weather.
Review 77:very friendly staff, very quiet and relaxing environment, perfect breakfast,
Review 78:Air conditioning in the bedrooms is essential in a hotel of this standing In winter the bedrooms will probably need heat. Bedroom corridor dark & forbidding Entrance not very welcoming
Review 79:Garden & pool were lovely Availability of drinks & cake for guests is a nice touch Although the food was very good we felt the portions on the set dinner were too small & the cocktail glass was barely filled to one third full. Not a very relaxed atmosphere
Review 80:The only thing to recommend to the hotel: let people pay 5 € more instead of selling bathing caps for this high price in order to be able to use the swimming pool. That makes customers more happy.
Review 81:Best hotel bed ever!!! This is a beautiful place to relax, do nothing but follow the clouds that jump over the roof and breath fresh air. Very soothing and calming sourroundings meaning: nature, nature, nature. Well equipped DVDs for free rental, cosy rooms with great design. Even the candles are lit after dinner when you come back. Food is great and highly recommended. Breakfast as well as dinner. No need to go out at all. Except for the beautiful nature and the lake nearby.
Review 82:Everything was great!!!
Review 83:I travel a lot and this is one of the best hotels I have ever been in. It offers an amazing combination of a socluded location, great service and great dining.
Review 84:Just a tiny disappointed since the room facilities list in booking.commentions a hot tub in the suite.
Review 85:Lovely place, quiet and cozy. Gorgeous view. Very kind and professionalpeople. The indoor pool, which helps you open your appetite for adelicious meal. The spa, where we were able to book a massage withinless than an hour! The small surprise when arriving to the room afterdiner, and seeing all those candles lit and the candies on the bed.
Review 86:The only thing that I didn't like about our stay at the Casa was thatthe price structure for food and drink items was not clealry defined. Asan example, we knew that the breakfast was included in the nightly rate, but we did not know if the wine and liquor sitting-out was free or if wewere on the honor system, to let someone know that we had imbibed. Thiscaused a little anxiety.
Review 87:Wow! What a place. The lodge is a little out-of-the-way, but the extraeffort is well worth the undertaking. The Casa is absolutely beautiful, extremely well-designed, and the staff could not have been more friendlyand helpful. Despite its rustic location, the lodge is luxury all theway with gourmet meals, a very relaxing spa, and an unexpectedly niceswimming pool. The hiking was also outstanding.
Review 88:No TV Rooms a bit small
Review 89:Snacks and drinks available most of time Very helpful staff
Review 90:NOTHING!
Review 91:tHE ENVIRONMENT: PEOPLE, INFRASTRUCTURE AND NATURE
Review 92:The map for the hike could be improved.
Review 93:The food was excellent, the staff was great.
Review 94:everything was perfect
Review 95:Short options regarding food. Poor room service options. Should have more meal options regarding isolated location
Review 96:very polite staff, all extra wishes are fullfiled, got always the feeling to be welcome, great dinner menu, nice place to relax
Review 97:Super stay ,excellent staff and the chef is superb
Review 98:the location is amazing, the modern design, the wonderfull staff... everything to relax relax and relax
Review 99:staff warm and friendly wi-fi 24/7 any where & free a great location for hiking food fresh and high standard
