Reviews for HI NYC Hostel

Review 1:was over charged to begin with for 1st 2 nights, human error I guess but I picked it up looking at comfirmation email from booking.com otherwise would never have been refunded, no free breakfast unlike HiChicago hostel and is bit pricey !

Review 2:good location, comfortable beds.

Review 3:A staff front desk gave me an attitude all I did is show my credit card for my last name she burst and start slamming my receipt! and the other lady helping this girl she gets mad just because they dont understand too much english ,body language is enough!

Review 4:closer to everything! laundry room facility is old still good place to stay. The guys are friendly and polite, looks like they have more patients, comedy night is great,The band was there Great, walking tours are excellent!

Review 5:Great location, easy access with subway. All facilities and room were clear. They have a huge kitchen, which is awesome if you want to prepare your own meals.

Review 6:Showers were really difficult to operate, some staff were not very friendly.

Review 7:I liked the friendly atmosphere of the common areas, and the free included breakfast was also good.

Review 8:Noise that some careless people make but it is not the hostel's responsibility. I would suggest that the direction to the bust stop made a diagram way.

Review 9:Simple but there are all I needed! Only 1 bus and last stop from LGA airport. Plastic bag provided for your wet umbrella when it rains.

Review 10:Amazing tours organised through the hostel, with evening entertainment to meet people easily. close to subway station to get around New York, great week spent here!

Review 11:Absolutely nothing!!!

Review 12:Great location, right next to subway station. loads of social events organised to help meet other travellers, very clean and extremely friendly staff. Best hostel I have ever stayed in by a long way! Can't wait to come back!

Review 13:The security is useless for stopping a man to come into girls' room, it is dangerous that a strange can easily come in at night ...

Review 14:The kitchen and the theatre is good

Review 15:I shared a dorm with other 11 girls (Single Bed in Female Economy Room). This hotel charged 5% non-member fee. The room was noize. If you are sensitive to sound, don't stay here. I found hairs on blanket.

Review 16:close to subway.

Review 17:Everything was fine for me.Next time i will stay here again.

Review 18:Excellent location(20 minutes-8 stops with Line 1 to Times Square).Friendly and helpful staff.Free tours.Welcome party(chance to meet and find new friends)every Monday and Thursday with free drinks and live music.

Review 19:Smelly room

Review 20:Very big good hostel. Comedy club/pubcrawl was awesome. Big lauch area's. Backery inside, Deli across the street. Close to the subway. Walkign distance from central park.

Review 21:They don't change beet sheet daily, even when it's dirty.

Review 22:The welcome party, comedy show, facilities available at the lounge is top class. It's worth the experience.

Review 23:- location close to metro but not close to time square or downtown - Price of New Year's eve & New Year's day was super high

Review 24:- Facilities

Review 25:There was nothing I didnt like

Review 26:I loved how warm the welcome was from the staff. Also how easy the access was to and from the hostel. The subway was right across the street which made commuting so easy! Highly reccomend it

Review 27:There were only 4 showers and one was out of order my entire stay...long wait to take a shower.

Review 28:The staff was very friendly and the location was great. It was also clean and warm with spacious lockers in the rooms.

Review 29:This time, and I'm sure I already wrote to you about it, there was a mentally ill woman in the bed next to mine. Rm 206, bottom bunks; mine was closest to door. Date was Tues., Dec. 8. In the early evening I thought nothing of woman lying on her back with head mostly covered talking. Figured she was on the phone. Was awakened about 3am when she started talking in a normal volume nonstop. Finally she left rm, returning for her things about an hour later. I was very glad when she left. Reported her actions to downstairs desk personnel. Later, up-stairs, I noticed a note to her on our door. Her name? Henderson? Anderson? Something ending in ...son. So, I've stayed in dorms several times; this was a first-hopefully the last such experience. It was a little frightening as the middle-of-the nt monologue mentioned wanting to get back at people who'd monkeyed with her bed, making it move(it wasn't moving). Sorry to go on so long.

Review 30:When I'm alone in nyc, I feel safe at the hostel and in the neighborhood. Bathrms are always immaculate; rms are fine.

Review 31:Room ventilation. Elevator capacity and load. Enormous crouds of people moving inside.

Review 32:Friendly personnel. Breakfast is included. Easy to find and to get to. Clean.

Review 33:The light in the room is really dark which makes the room be in lack of light especially at night. Also the air exchange is not very good in the room.

Review 34:The hostel is a well organized and managed hostel in New York City. A good place for a travelers with limited budget. A good location with proximity to the subway and generally not bad security. One impressive thing is that it has plug ins and lights for every bed, which is very considerable. Although it was not the best hostel experience for me, but for the expensive city, it is not bad!

Review 35:I generally like HI , i've been in the Boston branch and they had free breakfast there. That would be something that'd be nice to have in the HI NYC. Also, that bathroom was a bit of a problem, not enough, and it was pretty dirty to my disappointment. I expected more from HI.

Review 36:I loved the location, a few blocks away from central park. located in upper west side manhattan. I lot of events going on in the hostel.

Review 37:I was in the 12-beds dormitory in level 2 for two nights. Got the top bunk bed where every bed has its own light and 2 sockets just above your head when you lie down. I found this very convenient. The shower and bathroom is just 5 steps from the dorm. It was clean, there are 2 large mirrors inside it and I had very good hot showers during my stay. Locker was just appropriate for me. I brought my own padlock. Didn't get the chance to mingle with other travellers much though as I spend most of my time sightseeing (0700-2230). Basically, only in the room for sleeping. Staffs were helpful during checked-in and with the direction to the airport. Overall, everything was good. I had a great stay. Would definitely return in the future and recommend to others.

Review 38:The location is one block Of a subway station, it is very good. but is not so near of the main attractions Of the city. The lockers Of additional bag is a little expensive.

Review 39:Have a good place to meet and make friends. This place make some parties to approach the people. Internet work very fine and fast.

Review 40:The room key kept deactivating and I had to go down a few times to the front desk. The bed is not very comfortable. The room needs to be aired out and the room carpets need some rug cleaner.

Review 41:There is not much that I didn't like frankly especially the moderately priced room options. The entire stay was really great, helpful and nice staff. The Location was good with very easy access to the Subway and I felt very safe there. Bathrooms are very clean with a lot of daytime staff constantly cleaning. The cafe was open until 1 am. Another nice touch is that they had so many social things to do from the comedy show to bike tours. I was impressed and will be returning again and again!

Review 42:Something very minor - my room access key card sometimes would not work - I had to go down to reception and have mine reset a few times.

Review 43:Location is very central - metro station (103st) is a couple of minutes walking distance away and a 15 minute ride away from Times Square. Access to most metro lines in NY are in Times Square. The dorm I was in was clean, warm and spacious. Staff were friendly and eager to go out of their way to be helpful. The self-catering kitchen was large, practical and helped a lot with staying on budget. There is a convenience store and a chinese takeaway right opposite the hostel. Lots of activities and tours are available every day (most are free). The tours I went on were insightful and a good opportunity to meet and network with the other people staying in the hostel. The people who work here love what they do and it shows.

Review 44:My room was close to the elevator, and it keep whistling all night long. Not so good for a "premium" bedroom. Also, there was a terrible smell probably coming from the lockers, which means the airwick was not working.

Review 45:Amazing location, close to major city's touristic places. The hostel facilities are also pretty good: beautiful decoration, the shared restrooms are clean and offer a good individual space. Food of the included breakfast was also decent.

Review 46:The elevator or the lift was very slow. Needs to be replaced.

Review 47:I liked the social programs of the hostel and the environment. It is not like a hotel but more like a hostel with kitchens. The best part is that they have a cafe almost open for 24 hours.

Review 48:Just two things: 1) Floors on the showers were soaked everytime, I understand is a massive hostel, but keeping the bathroom floors dry would be better. 2) The first night, a couple were getting very intimate, so would be good to emphasise the 'sex restrictions' whitin the check in/out policies.

Review 49:The staff is super friendly and always keen to help you. Complementary breakfast is good enough to give you a boost in the morning to walk around NYC.Very good place and value for money, highly recommend.

Review 50:I had to pay $5 to store my bag for a couple of hours after I checked out

Review 51:Location. Close to Subway. Clean bathrooms. I liked how we were given fresh towels everyday. Offered lots of activities to sign up for. Big lockers in rooms for storage.

Review 52:I was on the first floor and had to use the restroom on the second floor in the middle of the night. I hope the construction finishes soon.

Review 53:The room I stayed in is partitioned quite well and it give the occupants of each bunk bed some privacy. I liked that a lot. Not all the rooms are set up the same way. I liked the layout of the facilities, and that you can move around the different theme rooms, have quiet time or mingle with the other residents. I enjoyed using the large kitchen. Thank you.

Review 54:I didn't liked that we got put in a coed room eventhough we booked a female room, but after telling them they switched us again.

Review 55:I liked the Bathrooms, they were clean all the time, and the little Shop with food was really nice. Furthermore the Hostel is right at a Subwaystation so it's easy to get around.

Review 56:Too many noise from others rooms (left, right and up). The mattress was a little too hard for me.

Review 57:Super clean, with so many activities, super nice employees, a good cafeteria, a decent wifi in the whole building, close to the subway. (but a little far away from the main downtown of NYC).

Review 58:The elevator

Review 59:I had a great time!! I especially liked all the activities that were available during the day and night. A big shout out to Max May for a great comedy and club tour. He took us to non touristy places you would not normally know about.

Review 60:Only one elevator for the whole building. They should built another stairway instead of just one which only can be accessed to go down.

Review 61:Conveniently located. They offer tours, a free comedy stand up show and more. Bathrooms are regularly cleaned.

Review 62:The cues for the pool/snooker table could be updated. Breakfast is very basic, but I guess you get what you pay for.

Review 63:Gone are the perceptions of a hostel being a cheap grotty place to save some money. This place was great!! Staff so friendly, the building in a cool neighbourhood, with central park a short walk away. The facilities are clean and of decent quality. It's great because if you wanna meet new people and explore the city they arrange activities everyday of you the week. And if you want a bit of a quiet break, everyone respects this with areas for a calm peaceful moment too.

Review 64:The staff was friendly and helpful, the facilities were very accommodating and clean the beds were very comfortable, great Location close to public transportation. Overall experience was great.

Review 65:no negatives really, although it was slightly further from the city than I expected when booking.

Review 66:The atmosphere around the hostel was superb, all of the staff were really friendly and helpful.

Review 67:Room was so dark, even with lights on you can barely see. Only one mirror in the room and it was right in the corner behind the bunk beds, super pricey but it is NYC after all.

Review 68:Close to Red Line Subway station, staff were super friendly and helpful, plenty of showers and cool places to hang out.

Review 69:This is a great, friendly, inexpensive place to stay in New York City. Although located on 103rd St., it's close to Central Park, and just one block from the subway. They offer spacious rooms, many activities, plenty of social areas, free wifi, and an onsite café. It's used by travellers of all ages, young and old. I've stayed here several times, and I look forward to returning soon

Review 70:The roommates I had were noisy morning and evening, but that is in now way HI's fault!

Review 71:The staff was amazing and the cleanliness blew me away- value for what you get can't be beat! Thank you so much for existing! I will be back to visit this glorious city and when I am you can bet I will be staying at HiHostel again!

Review 72:Spacious rooms, even in the eight beds dormitories. Quiet and clean. A little coffe place where you can buy something to eat, even when you are coming back late. The hostel also propose a lot of Entertainment: daily tours around the city, comedy and magic shows, concerts in the evnening.... Great location, close to two important subway lines and only a few blocks from Central Park!

Review 73:The elevator takes ages and you're not allowed to drink alcohol there.

Review 74:The rooms are spacey and the beds comfy. Bathrooms very clean. Subway is just around the corner and Central Park is very close too.

Review 75:Elevator... but let's use stairs for your health.

Review 76:I stayed at lots of hostels in the world. but here is one of the best hostel ever. clean, quiet and good cafe. if you like party hostel, here is not your place.

Review 77:5$ to store luggage in a locker after check-out. Bunk beds aren't completely steady (noisy at each movement). Gospel tour actually is a neighborhood history tour with a mess at the end (it's alright bur u r expecting something else).

Review 78:Efficiency and quickness on check-in/out. Flip flops and breakfast was included in my room rate (not the same for all rooms rates). Wi-Fi works everywhere. Close to metro station and to a 24h supermarket. Coffee shop inside the hostel (nice variety of sweet/salty food and it's open till late).

Review 79:Nothing!

Review 80:The bathrooms and dorms were immaculate! Staff were accomodating when they had issues with the check-in system and stowed our luggage at no extra cost!

Review 81:The beds are quite noisy. You can't move in them without waking up some people in your room. Also the elevator is terribly slow, I took the stairs a lot because I was waiting for the elevator for like 10 minutes every time. However, I would stay at this hostel again, no doubt.

Review 82:The staff is very helpful and kind. Also very cool that they organize something for the guests almost every night. Great place to stay and meet other travellers! Everyone is very sociable and friendly.

Review 83:Smell funny in 3rd floor Really crowded bathroom in the morning(ladys room)

Review 84:1min from station! Nice staff Welcome party with free drinks on thursday!

Review 85:It is slightly far from Midtown and Downtown area, but very close to the subway, so not a problem.

Review 86:Considering how many people share the toilet and showers, I was pleasantly surprised with how clean they are. The rooms are basic, but everything is clean. Comfortable beds.

Review 87:strange changes in temp. sometimes waaaay too cold in room. beds could be comfier

Review 88:front desk service very friendly, big fan of cafe and its late hours. main floor very nicely setup for chillin

Review 89:I would have preferred some curtains on the dorm beds for the sake ofprivacy. You need to bring your own lock for the lockers inside thedorms. Providing breakfast is a nice gesture of the hostel but do notexpect a full meal. Luggage storage in a locker in the cellar (I.E. forusage after check-out) costs $5.

Review 90:The premium 6-bed dorm was spacious and I had a good night's sleepthanks to the other girls who did not make much noise. It takes only 5minutes to get to the next subway stop and the overall location is aboutas central as you can get for $50. Wi-Fi worked flawlessly. The hostelhas some nice common areas. There is even a laundry room and a"theater room" with comfy couches, a projector and big screen, though I did not use any of these. When I peeked into the theater roomsome people were watching sports.

Review 91:I was very very very annoyed that my room access card kept deactivating.I had to reactivite it at least 15 times in my five night stay. Therewere also hidden cost in the hostel. Something to do with not being amember and therefore had to pay an extra $3 a night. A bit dodgey.

Review 92:The location was great. Activities provided by the hostel were veryentertaining. If you have the chance, definitely try out the CentralPark Walk and Jerry's tour of New York. The kitchen and lounge werealso really good.

Review 93:Too many groups of young school kids!! No shelf or light near beds.

Review 94:Walking distance to two subway stations. Clean. Cafe onsite. Fast wifi. Laundry room.

Review 95:everything was just perfect.

Review 96:Great location, simple but comfortable beds, the most clean hostel I've ever been, you can get new towel whenever you want. Also I love their food options. Nice neighborhood.

Review 97:The place itself is really cool. Nice facilities and common areas are absolutely amazing. I loved the patio garden... It's beautiful and great to chill after a long day of walking in Ny.

Review 98:Personnel was not as friendly as I expected. Hair driers were not working. A/C suddenly closes at night which makes it as cold as the poles. Also A/C works very noisy. Not a great institution.

Review 99:Although a bit far from downtown, it's a great neighborhood, close to Central Park and two subway stations, easy to reach midtown. Wi-Fi was not bad. Linen and towels were clean. Beds were comfy.

Review 100:Not a bad experience, but I would advise them not to lock windows (probably a safety measure) but the room does get extremely stuffy when your sharing with with almost 10 persons.

Review 101:Staff is extremely friendly and helpful, always trying to bring travelers from different backgrounds together. If you're traveling solo and want to meet new people, this is the place for you.

Review 102:After checking out you can leave your luggage in a locker for 5 dollars which I find a bit expansive given the fact that I,ve already spent a lot for the accommodation. And if you open it once you have to pay again if you want to keep your stuff there.

Review 103:I stayed in a dorm with 12 beds and it is what it is. A dorm :)/but everything was super clean, the bathroom is huge and comes with a hairdryer. The kitchen is very well equipped the cafe is nice and all the community places are cozy. There is a nice backyard. The staff is nothing special, they help you if you ask them anything but won't be your buddies :) the best thing is that they offer walking tours in the city and some of them are really cool. There are tours for free and for 10 dollars. Great opportunity to make friends, believe me :) the location is perfect, the subway is down the corner.

Review 104:When on the top bunk there is no way from the floor to turn on your bed light meaning you disturb people when you climb up to turn the light on when you get back from a night out.

Review 105:Location is pretty good as only a short distance from 2 subway stations. Didn't actually spend that much time in the hostel as spent the time in the city sight seeing but the facilities looked good and well maintained. Free walking tours are informative and a great way to meet new people.

Review 106:I liked the idea that there was a unit over each bed that had a reading light with 2 power outlets - but they were a pain in the neck. The outlets seemed to be oversized or just worn out because every plug I tried just hung there loosely and had to be oh-so-carefully adjusted to the perfect angle to get my cell phone to charge.

Review 107:Front desk staff was awesome, Wifi was reliable, decent breakfast was included, bathroom was in good shape, bed was pretty comfortable and they left me a fresh towel every morning. The locker was big enough for my carry-on plus a pair of boots and I could still hang up my winter coat. Only 1 block from the 1 Line and 2 blocks from Central Park - fantastic.

Review 108:The blanket provided was very thin and uncomfortable. I got so cold in the middle of night that I had to get my coat to layer up. Also bathroom was very cold, which made showing a nightmare. Strangely the hallway was always extra warm.

Review 109:Location is very nice. 3 min walk from line 1 makes travel very easy.

Review 110:Paying $5 for the lockers on the checkout day.

Review 111:The enviroments are organized and beautiful. There are daily events hosted by the hostel team. The snack store in the hostel is very good.

Review 112:- none, only if you want some privacy, hostels are not good choice for you :)

Review 113:- awesome value for money - decend breakfast - friendly staff - location - chance to meet so many people from all over the world - tours arranged by the hostel

Review 114:It is an awesome Hostel! U have such a big variety of activities(funnycomedy show, bar crawl etc.) and the stuff is really nice :) it'sreally good for solo travelers, because u can get to know other peoplein just a few minutes! It's not super clean but it'sok(don't forget it's a hostel for younger people-dorm rooms!)the location of the hostel is kinda ... I tell u why: it's upperwestsite - a couple blocks from the central park, but when u wanna gosightseeing it's a little far up" remember timessquare is on42st and it takes a while to get there by sub, but I mean I don'tmind taking the subway downtown.

Review 115:Slow elevator (and only one) and key had to be reloaded twice a day. Gospel tour had wrong name, it was actually neighbour history tour that ended in a church. It was ok tour but you expect something else.

Review 116:Very nice personnel, clean hostel, cheap food, big rooms, etc etc. Teather room, lots of tables..

Review 117:It has a good location, close to the subway. The cafe was great, as was the social rooms. I loved the feel of the hostel as soon as I walked in. Very helpful staff. Already recommended this hostel to a friend!

Review 118:The price. I find it quite expensive for being a hostel and having shared rooms.

Review 119:It's really close to a metro station that takes you to the city centre in few minutes (24/7). The enviroment (full of young people) and the activities they have are really cool. The room is quite confortable and every bed has its own plug and night light. The restrooms are very clean.

Review 120:I didn't like the breakfast. we didn't have options to choose. It was just a bagel with cream cheese/eggs/cheese, coffee and a fruit.

Review 121:Great location and nice employees.

Review 122:The room had a weird smell, but I think one of the guests nevershowered. Not the hostels fault.

Review 123:The hostel is very well located. They also speak spanish. When you getthe train there are two lines right beside it. Leaving you always godowntown, coming back the uptown. Be sure to hop on a local trainotherwise you will miss it and you will have to come back. Showers arereally good and nice. Theres also a cafe downstairs where you can grab abite and its nyc price, not overcharged, which is quite good and handy.Theres no breakfast included.

Review 124:Really nice atmosphere. Great location and great staff! I was very welcome at the hostel by Marcus who is a really nice and cool guy! I recommend the hostel to anyone who is travelling alone and wanna have a great time in NYC!

Review 125:I love the HI-NYC. Because they organized so many awesome activities, and we can make friends there! We traveled with these new friends together to see this amazing city. All the staff are very kind and friendly, the kitchen is so big, the facilities are so nice, the distance to grocery shop was so close and so convenient, the atmosphere make me like coming back my home! If I come to New York, I will stay here again! Great place! All the best! Love you, all the people there!

Review 126:Limited restrooms and showers.

Review 127:Location is good - just one block from the subway station. The ambiance was good. I did not get a chance to use the kitchen but it looked very well stocked with bowls and utensils. Loved the common room with chargers, couches and pool table. Room was clean. The daily activity organized by the hostel is a really good way to meet other travelers and explore NY.

Review 128:Nice place in a quiet part of NYC. It may seem a bit far from the main attractions like Times Square etc but once you get the hang of the subway system it really only takes under 10min to anywhere. Very close the local subway station aswell. Staff were great!

Review 129:Female shower was okay but my friend said male shower was way too cold. They only offered a thin blanket so it was cold at night. I even needed to put on my coat when I was sleeping. I stayed HI Boston right before I came to NYC. Because I had such a wonderful experience at there I chose HI NY but it was totally different.

Review 130:Location was okay. They have great bagel place nearby. Subway station is close.

Review 131:It was hard adjusting to the thin walls and ceilings. Any soft or hard movement across the rooms was noisy. It made for a challenging quest for peace.

Review 132:I liked some of the staff members, particularly, T'Nell and Marcus. Very nice and helpful representatives! Also, I like that the place is quite clean.

Review 133:Very loud aircon/heating unit in my dorm room. Though the white noise was welcomed when someone snored, it was a bit too loud to sleep through generally. No central aircon system; I believe because of the age of the building. Dorm mates weren't the most friendly, but I can live with that. Not everyone is outgoing!

Review 134:Staff, cleanliness, bathrooms and cafe style canteen serving great food and drinks.

Review 135:I had a fantastic time staying here. I highly recommend this place, especially to those of you who travel alone. The hostel offers a variety of tours, pub crawls etc., which makes it easy to meet people from all over the world and make new friends.

Review 136:The bunkbeds are not so steady! They are a bit annoiying, but if the hostel took a little time to make them wooden and build onto the wall, perhaps with a small curtain to pull in front of the bed, then this hostel would be one of the best in the USA! And I have seen a LOT!

Review 137:I loved the breakfast included in the type of room I booked. Coffee or tea, bagel, donut, cereal or oatmeal and a banana or apple - great breakfast! I didn't use the kitchen facilities, as I was there for only four nights, but they looked so good! Plenty of places to hang out!
