Reviews for Excelsior Hotel

Review 1:The people are a little uptight

Review 2:The hotel is absolutely beautiful. & I just could not get over the fact that they were mirrors everywhere cuz I love to look at myself. And also it was just vintage looking but also urban

Review 3:It is in-cre-di-ble to find a hotel deserving of the name in the best part of Manhattan's Upper West Side, at $149 for a double room including all taxes. Certainly higher in high season, but still... I have looked all over and the Excelsior is miles better than any alternative with comparable location (e.g., the crabby-patty rooms at the Hilton for twice the money.) Moreover, as a very large place, it is most likely to have vacancies even at the last minute.

Review 4:No kettle or fridge in the rooms. Really difficult when you are from overseas and don't know where the best local coffee is, and you can't make a familiar cup of tea in your room.

Review 5:The "old style" look inside, yet modern in conveniences.

Review 6:One little thing to improve: Please change the 1940's granny-style curtains. Who selected those anyway ? Look for something matching the furniture maybe... Two big things to make this a perfect Hotel: Install soundproof windows, so that guests can sleeeeeeep. Isn't that the main purpose of a hotel ? Change the heating/air conditioning. It's old, noisy and working as it pleases...

Review 7:Good location. Nice view over the park. Nice foyer.

Review 8:It is minor, but the toilet seat had chips in it and the hotel should replace. One of the two elevators was broken.

Review 9:A roomy, nice hotel in a great location. Everyone in our party had a wonderful stay.

Review 10:No coffee in the room? Toilet seat was wooden and the paint was chipped.

Review 11:It was a lovely space! Location was perfect, nice walk in the park, only15 blocks to symphony space, lovely sitting room for friends to visit, bed was so comfy, parking was easy across street at museum.

Review 12:It smelt of sweaty feet in the room The staff were cold and useless Got bitten by something Expensive for what it is No guest stair case

Review 13:Comfort of the bed

Review 14:The location is very good, close to Central Park and museums. The size of the hotel is very comfortable. We felt at home, not in an "ant hill" of people.

Review 15:Only two elevators were always occupied on Sunday morning, and then stopped on every floor. Front desk abd bell boy staff were polite in the evening of check in, but the next morning shift was inattentive.

Review 16:Great location near Museum of Natural History

Review 17:Unfortunately they couldn't find our reservation, they did eventually but instead of apologising for their mistake they just carried on booking is in (not telling us if we had a room or not) which after a long flight we didn't appreciate... No one welcomed us and had it not been for the fact we had no where else to go we would have left at that point... The room was lovely and would of had lovely views except for the scaffolding which was right across the building.... Again I feel we should have been notified by the hotel prior to this so we could have changed hotel had we wanted to.....

Review 18:Nice location. Bart the bell boy was very helpful. Didn't dine there so no comment

Review 19:I would have liked to have had coffee early in the morning, but we were told they would charge us for a full breakfast...so we went to Starbucks. Also extra towels would have been nice

Review 20:The rooms, although small were clean and quiet. We had a view toward the Park. The bed was comfortable and they provided extra pillows etc.

Review 21:Minor annoyance is the shower curtain. It does not keep water from getting on floor unless you leave it insiide the bathtub area which is creepy as it would come in contact with your skin. Not sure why so many hotels use it. 50% of towels are used on floor to absorb the water and avoid slipping. But other than that we really liked the room and overall experience was very satisfying. Minor inconvenience was parking. Probably no one has heard this before about New York. The Museum parking across the street is self-park and was not available. As we came in on a weekday afternoon Parking Garages were full. It took awhile before we found parking, but once you get rid of the car the hotel is in an excellent area to walk everywhere.

Review 22:Location for us is excellent and surprisingly quiet for NYC. Central Park and the Natural History Museum across the street is ideal. The room was very comfortable and had double doors that opened onto a sitting area with ia couch and TV which we enjoyed. The staff was very friendly and responsive.

Review 23:Nothing

Review 24:Great room. Big. Hotel 5 minutes walk .. If that to Central Park. Subway also within 5 mins. Restaurants and cafes very local. Convenience store very local.

Review 25:Only had breakfast once and it was disappointing.

Review 26:Reception team fantastic, couldn't help you enough. Restaurant attached was great, cocktails lovely.

Review 27:the bathtub wasn't draining very well.

Review 28:the location, by far. We were staying there for the New York Marathon and it was perfect to be so close to the finish. Also, we have a 2 year old daughter and it was great to be able to take her to Central Park so easily to run around and play.

Review 29:The breakfast buffet was not great. Pass and go to a local spot.

Review 30:Great location on the UWS. Easy access to Central Park, Museums, the Subway and many great restaurants. The rooms were spacious for NYC and worked well for small children.

Review 31:No fridg in room & Wifi not being included with room fee. If one can get Wifi at Starbucks or many other locations free of charge, one should be able to get it at a hotel with rooms at the Excelsior's price.

Review 32:The location, attentiveness of staff and comfort of room.

Review 33:Third stay there in 3 months. All times booked through booking.com Upon arrival reservation could not be located by person at reception desk. Then at checkout charged for taxes although already paid to booking.com had to argue to get taxes charged twice removed from bill. Still waiting for correction of one trip. Instead of resolving issue and apologizing the staff argues and blames it on booking.com stay away from this hotel

Review 34:This hotel goes to great lengths to squeeze every possible cent out ofcustomers! They charge for everything. You pay for WiFi, and if you wanta mini-fridge you have to pay for it, too. And 20$ for breakfast...Seriously? Also no kettle in the room, not even coffee in the lobby, zilch. And the worst was that the room was in the back, and the windowoverlooked some kind of dark, narrow inner-court. We couldn't evensee the sky - only the opposite wall. Room was dark all day - dismal anddepressing.

Review 35:Room was spacious, decoration a bit dated but personally I like it,it's like a trip back in time. As a classic movie buff, I enjoyedthat, though cleanliness of the carpet was uncertain. Bathroom waslovely, great bath products.

Review 36:Only the noise from the renovations

Review 37:Location. Comfy beds and pillows. Beautiful bathroom and products. Helpfulness of staff when as a hot-tea-deprived Aussie traveller I requested use of an electric kettle -was immediately and courteously obliged.

Review 38:No free wi-fi in rooms, patch of mould under window fetching wallpaper off, no tea /coffee making facilities in room.

Review 39:Location near to Central Park, helpful staff, comfortable room.

Review 40:First room had banging noise that wouldn't stop. Front desk personnel were not helpful regarding the situation initially. We then had to go to the front desk and ask for another room. We were going to stay elsewhere if we didn't get it. Don't accept room 707.

Review 41:Great location.

Review 42:Shame our view was spoilt by scaffolding and the coffee vending machine had no cups for 3 days. A little on the expensive side.

Review 43:Brilliant location nice and quiet. Lovely to get away from the very busy midtown and times square. Beautiful stroll away from central park.

Review 44:Staff were unhelpful and unfriendly and tried to overcharge us. Not enough staff on reception at peak times. House maids were excellent and cleaned room very thoroughly

Review 45:Great room with decent space for the 4 of us. Convenient location with easy access to subway and central park.

Review 46:No internet in the rooms . Bathroom on the small side.

Review 47:good hotel in a good location in Upper Wedt side. Beds were really comfortable . Had a great stay here .

Review 48:Staff found it a little to difficult to help when asked about booking taxi's and also keeping room on to a later time.

Review 49:Location good for Central Park. Rooms were clean and a good size.

Review 50:Obscure view from our window due to scaffolding. ( we were made aware). Breakfast was expensive and not good value for money.

Review 51:Excellent location. Nearby museums also subway station. Just across the road from Central Park.

Review 52:The location, the cleanliness, the mattresses and bed stuff, the history in the walls, the staff (especially the room lady for room 614), the peaceful and lovely breakfast (room), the ATM in the ground flor, the ab fab soaps (best really ever) and the attached restaurant and bar. Excellent!

Review 53:1. Rude and disrespectful staff there was no assistance and no proactive approach to satisfy the needs of clients. no one was there to listen and help.At the rate paid, I would expect at least the level of service. The guy at the reception didn't care the problem, rather yelling and raising his voice to "the clients" Thus, it's utterly unacceptable behavior. 2. Room - poor condition, filthy, no natural sunlight, dark, noise, no one told me that building was under construction, especially it was right next to my room, central air conditioning with enormous noise and didn't work. I only stayed here for 2nights and then spent for the rest of days in other hotels. I had never encountered this kind of problems, the heating was perfect, very cordially welcomed by the staff with respect, clean room, very quite and luminous room as requested. So this hotel apparently has an issue with the people working at the reception.

Review 54:Our first trip to New York this hotel is perfect, staff are very helpfully nothing too much for them I would recommend this to any other family wanting a nice friendly hotel

Review 55:It might seem picky but unfortunately when we checked and nobody told us that there was construction going on. The entire front of the building had a scaffold which block their view. We found a note in the room warning us to keep our blinds closed. Reception staff was functional and as polite as they had to be but somewhat cool and not informative. The reception staff was functional and as polite as they had to be but somewhat cool and not informative. We have stayed there before and had better experiences.

Review 56:The room was very nice and the hall was clean except for a sofa bed up against the wall. That was there on the day we left.

Review 57:On several chilly days, heating didn't work.

Review 58:Great location for what I like: Lincoln Center, museums, theater, good reasonable eating. Very accessible public transportation. Room nice and quiet.

Review 59:Staff attitude and room

Review 60:Staff was very uncooperative at checkin as they did not honor the negotiated price until I contacted you to reconfirme with them.....then, they gave us a noisy room that was later changed

Review 61:When we arrived at the room, there was leftover trash remaining in the room. There was no view of the park whatsoever and our window looked out onto a brick wall. The outer window was also covered by scaffolding and construction. The amenities were perfectly acceptable, however, for the price of $500 per night, the room room and hotel were no where near worth that value. Were it not for a clerical error which forced me to make a last minute reservation at this hotel for the evening, I would never recommend this facility to anyone unless the price was DRASTICALLY reduced.

Review 62:The location is absolutely phenomenal and ultra convenient.

Review 63:Calle Ocho, the hotel resturant is too pricey. Would like the hotel to provide coffee, sugar and creamer.

Review 64:In a great location of upper west side, 1 block from central park and lots of great restaurants in the area. Gastronomie 491 is a short walk away and is fantastic for breakfast and lunch, more upscale than Lenny's and not as busy. Zabar's is within walking distance for any snacks you would like to bring back to the hotel. Hotel room has coffee maker but you need to purchase your own for the room.

Review 65:- Breakfast not included in the price - Paid WiFi in rooms!!!! Only free WiFi at the lobby and leisure centre

Review 66:- Excellent location - Metro/subway a few steps from the hotel - Opposite the American National Museum of Natural History - A walking distance from the Metropolitan Museum of Arts - Comfortable rooms - Friendly staff

Review 67:- Breakfast not included in the price - Paid WiFi in rooms!!!! Free WiFi only at the lobby and the leisure centre

Review 68:- Excellent location, just a few steps from the metro/subway - Very close to the American National Museum of Natural History and the Metropolitan Museum of Arts - Comfortable rooms - Friendly staff

Review 69:Maintenance work STILL. I had read earlier reviews & didn't expect that so much work would still be continuing. We were on the 16th floor where we should have had a superb view overlooking a park but scaffolding and mesh blocked our view. It wasn't unusual to see a workman walking past the window carrying a bucket! Not the privacy we would have expected. Room overpriced considering noise from workmen, lack of privacy and lack of view. A sheet apologising for any inconvenience insufficient.

Review 70:Lovely location. Away from all the hustle & bustle but close to the subway to get around New York. Hotel decor & furniture in public areas is like stepping back in time but really tastefully done. Big comfy sofas and chairs. The bedroom was ample for our 2 nights stay (Queen room). Nice, modern, well lit bathroom. Starbucks and reasonably priced restaurants close by. Ate at Citron on Columbus Avenue. Very good.

Review 71:Room was dirty with water stains all over the chair and the carpet was worn. The room and all its decor is a dingy beige. No room serviice available and for the cost of the room it should come with Wi-Fi which I had to pay for. No amenities in the room like microwave or small fridge. The front desk staff was unfriendly and unhelpful. The only reason I satyed here was my favorite Upper west side hotel, 2 blocks away from excelsior and overlooking Museum of natural History and planetarium, was booked. I wil never stay here again

Review 72:The only good thing I can say about the Excelsior is its great location

Review 73:Staff was friendly and helpful and the room was large, comfortable and quite chic. Another plus is the Excelsior's proximity to museums and Central Park.

Review 74:There is building work going which is very noisy and scaffolding on the front of the hotel. There wasn't double-glazing so it was extremely noisy from the road too. Also, it has rather a dark and dingy feel, due to lack of natural light, though it's clean. Plus the air-conditioning is ridiculously noisy to the point of being unusable for any length of time.

Review 75:Great location near Central Park and walkable distance into city and main sites. Shops and restaurants all nearby. Staff were pleasant and helpful when I requested a change of room due to noise outside. Second room was much better.

Review 76:With more than 300$ night this hotel is not same quality as you could expect and not even breakfast was included in price but it´s in Manhattan.

Review 77:Location very close to subway and central park and they upgraded us to room where was small kitchen because of baby.

Review 78:This is a great hotel - quiet area just off Central Park West near the Museum of Natural History but just 1/2 block to the subway. Rooms are very comfortable and staff is helpful and friendly. Breakfast is not included but it's very good and the breakfast room is lovely.

Review 79:Noise, but that's unavoidable in New York City

Review 80:Close to museum, close to son's apartment, lots of green space nearby, lots of food options nearby

Review 81:staff were not great - grumpy on check in - no real bar - facilities were ok

Review 82:it was ok - not bad but not great - location is nice and if you are good on the subway then its ok - i had been to NY 5 times so was keen to move out of the very expensive manhatten area - so on that scale it was worth it

Review 83:The breakfast at $17 was over priced. Very limited staff, nothing freshly prepared. Just an omlette chef would have made a great difference.

Review 84:Rooms are nicely appointed, and the staff is very friendly.

Review 85:Hotel offered parking for free but it was not true. Just arriving thehotel, a guy in the door indicated to me to park the car at Museum. WhenI checked out a stamp was put on the parking ticket but it was only adiscount. I had to pay $60 per 48 hours, because hotel only paid $38.One of the reasons to choose the hotel was free parking and they didn´taccomplish

Review 86:This was a lovely home base for my first visit to NYC with 8 and 10 year old daughters. We loved tha charming lobby, kind and helpful staff and proximity to subway, Museum of Natural History and Central Park.

Review 87:Hard to find downside - if anything, Coffee/tea in the morning should have been provided since there was no coffee maker in the room (for the price of this hotel I would expect one or the other)

Review 88:Great location - easy subway access. We were upgraded to a junior suite and the room was wonderful. Very quiet! I usually stay in midtown for business purposes -but this location made such a difference. a short subway ride to most locations. Being on Central Park was a great way to unwind after work.

Review 89:The check in staff were lovely, after flying over from Seattle, and arriving late in the night, my room was seen to quickly, and I was given a late check out for the following day! Needed the sleep, thank you!

Review 90:Chipped bathtub, errant spraying shower faucet, bathroom could use updating; hotel under construction with workers outside rooms on scaffolding

Review 91:Clean room, nice linens, large closet, nice bed (but would prefer king- queen was just so much less expensive!) but most of all, amazing location

Review 92:Man reception personnel is not well prepared to treat people as woman is. Could be improved or replaced.

Review 93:The confortable room we received was awesome in accordance to the price.

Review 94:Nothing to complain about really except the front rooms (where the best view would be) had netting & scaffolding due to construction-- so we chose a back room with not much of a view.

Review 95:Location! Close to central park, subway, columbus ave., natural history museum across the street, comfortable beds, great shower/water pressure, excellent value! The only negative is that they were doing construction in the front rooms, & there wasn't much of a view from the back rooms. Would definitely stay here again.

Review 96:The staff at front desk not very service friendly. One particular staff did not smile, but seemed annoyed to be bothered with us asking questions.

Review 97:The location was fantastic and room was clean and comfortable.

Review 98:Concierge was very disappointing, the main thing we wanted to do on our 25th wedding anniversary was hire bikes and he failed to help us , so missed out on that

Review 99:the location was excellent, only there for 2 nights but near to where we needed to visit, ie, central park and natural history museum

Review 100:They only provide free WiFi in the lobby area. I think this is unacceptable for hotel which is not cheap. Plus, we are in the XXI Century!

Review 101:Excellent location

Review 102:Only complaints: bathroom was a little dirty (hair all over the floor and in the tub; and a used razor was left on washcloth holder) and the breakfast was a bit pricey for what was offered.

Review 103:Staff is great, very courteous and helpful. Location is awesome!! Near the subway and Central Park. Excellent amenities!

Review 104:The buffet breakfast was horrible, for such a prestigious hotel. Parking sign for museum could be higher.

Review 105:Right near Central Park. Parking across the street.

Review 106:Very average overall. Great location but who doesn't provide free wifi? Doorman/bellman was pretty awful. Very small room. Hair dryer didn't work. Advertised luggage storage but did not have it.

Review 107:Location - 2min to central park and C subway line. Clean, quiet. Reasonable price.

Review 108:Paying for WiFi is ridiculous - for so many other hotels, it is just part of the room - like a lamp, or air conditioning. Pull out bed not very comfortable.

Review 109:good location, clean, helpful staff

Review 110:No coffee macine or fridge available. A big inconvenience. No complimentary Water was provided.

Review 111:Ante room was good. Lots of eating joins around. Near to museums and park.

Review 112:Wifi was extra in the rooms and breakfast was $17 per person for buffet.

Review 113:The location is perfect! Across from the Museum of Natural History and a block from the subway. Also close to many restaurants. Rooms were small but clean and comfy.

Review 114:long wait for elevator but minimal compared to the whole experience. The addition of the taxes was ridiculous but can not be controlled.

Review 115:Quiet location compared to the rest of the city across the street from Central Park. Pleasant staff. Very clean. Many places to eat. Would definitely recommend

Review 116:The wifi was a big problem--unspeakably high (around $15-20/day),so be prepared. TRAVELER;'s note: ,If you are heading to jfk, consider taking a cab instead of a shuttle. We missed our plane due toheavy traffic and a late-arriving shuttle that had multiple stops tomake between the Excelsior and jfk. Had we taken a cab, we'd havebeen on time.

Review 117:Wow! Right across the street from the Natural History museum--can'tbeat that! The concierge was very helpful. Subway was veryclose...can't beat the location or the price! The neighborhood iswelcoming and very walkable and enjoyable.

Review 118:WiFi only free at reception and 2nd floor breakfast room. Breakfast very basic and food only warm from non-heated servers.

Review 119:Close to museums and central park Calle Ocho restaurant is very good although not part of the hotel it is right on the ground floor. South American cuisine.

Review 120:Too old and noisy hotel. The worst sleepless night in a long time. The toilet got blocked in one of the rooms and noone did nothing even though we asked the staff to fix it. We got a " oh sorry about that" when we checked out.

Review 121:Parking at the museum near by.

Review 122:Staff could have been friendlier. Be prepared to pay a fortune in parking. The hotel said they validated parking, that means they only give you a discount.

Review 123:Close proximity to the subway, wonderful shops and restaurants around the hotel.

Review 124:It would have been nice to have free WIFI...seems so archaic not to offer this, when much lower scale hotels do...

Review 125:close to so many nice areas next to the park, the natural history museum and wonderful restaurants

Review 126:The girl at the front desk was lovely and gave us fabulous accommodations. I was so impressed that I had my friend who lives on the west side come up and see the room!

Review 127:My pillow was kinda lumpy :( & no free wifi - that's it. Everything else was thumbs up :)

Review 128:The location was excellent! Staff was friendly! Hotel was clean with spacious rooms. (Ours had a seperate seating area in which we kept our suit cases so it wasn't cramped at all) Close to subway, natural history museum, Central Park & many wonderful restaurants at different price points! There was also a Starbucks 1 min away & a Trader Joes 15 min walk. We grabbed groceries a couple of times & had a picnic in the park.

Review 129:Terrible front desk service .... Tried to tell me that we didn't pay for our reservations but lucky for me I had a confirmation email from booking agency. Bell Hop didn't help us unload our car or even help bring it into the rooms, but did tell me to "Make sure I bring the luggage cart back to the lobby and not let it in my room all week!" Like i would do that ...

Review 130:Loved the location of the hotel. Room, bed, and bathroom were clean and nice. Location of the hotel in the city was excellent. Loved how close the subway and Central Park were to hotel.

Review 131:I didn't like that wifi wasn't included...especially for those staying in a suite.

Review 132:this was the largest hotel room I've ever found in NYC! I loved the 2 separate rooms because I could close the French doors and get ready in the morning without disturbing my friend. Good sized bathroom too. The hotel was clean, we were given a late check-out at no charge, and they stored our luggage for us all day once we checked out. Complimentary newspaper at our door each morning. It is in a very beautiful and quiet neighbourhood directly across Central Park and the museum of natural history. We discovered great places to eat all around us. It's a couple minutes walk to the train so very easy to get around and back from all the tourist hot spots you might want to visit. I'll be back for sure

Review 133:The staff was rude and unhelpful. Although I did bought internet twice, it didn't work and when I asked the staff about that they said that it wasn't their problem because they work with another company to get the internet access. What a silly answer is that? I stay in your hotel and you shoul help me! They should give my money back I paid for internet which I could't access to, but they didn't. The room was not clean. I had a terrible experience.

Review 134:Just the location

Review 135:Only complaint I have is the keys had to be re-set 2 times in just 2 days. However, they were very quick to fix it each time.

Review 136:The service was impeccable and the rooms very comfortable!!

Review 137:The hotel staff were condescending. Although they answered questions well enough, the general impression was that they didn't really care and that the questions were stupid.

Review 138:The hotel room was good, clean and reasonably spacious by New York standards.
