Reviews for Royal Sunset Island Resort

Review 1:All good

Review 2:The staff were very friendly and very helpful. Excellent cultural show. Drinking champagne whilst sitting in the sea watching the sunset, just a few metres away from our Fale accommodation, was an experience we'll never forget !!

Review 3:Could make more of a effort with the rubbish pick-up

Review 4:Getty and Danny do a great job, Danny got us safely back to the mainland in big seas in time to catch our plane home, thank-you. A very relaxed 3 star resort, if you more use to or interested in 5 stars this is not the place for you but if you happy to relax in peace and quiet and not get to upset when things don't happen immediately you will love it

Review 5:The kitchen in the room was very basic and the ice box in the fridge needed to be defrosted.

Review 6:The variety of activities that was available including a swimming pool!!! Loved the entertainment and would love to eat fish by the sea for my next stay. Have booked again for November. In fact recently I took 30 people over with me on a Field trip for the OLA Programme and 28 of them have never been but live here in Tonga.

Review 7:The goggles that we borrowed were hopeless - either leaked or we couldnt see through them which was disappointing - best to take your own. The generator was quite noisy and we could smell the fumes from it. They bent over backwards and moved us further away which was super nice. Perhaps they could build a shed over the generator and insulate the shed would be a suggestion - I dont have any suggestions for the fumes though - Most travellers werent phased by it... I just have a super sensitive husband! One of the single beds had a huge hole in the middle so we had to move the mattress onto the floor - even then it still had a dip in the middle. In saying that, all the other beds were lovely.

Review 8:Loved the friendly atmosphere. Loved the little island. Loved that the snorkelling trips were no extra charge. Loved that they bent over backwards to make us happy. It really was a majic spot.

Review 9:The transfer boat was in a shocking state of disrepair, It would not pass any certificate of sea worthiness in NZ. Worse was the way they operated it. One of the motors ran out of fuel half way into the trip. The boat boy free poured fuel into the out board tote tank spilling significant petrol into the bilge of the boat. It was unbelievable to see that they didn't even try and mop it up and started the motor with petrol sloshing around in the bilges and petrol fumes filling the boat. The risk of blowing us all up was pointed out to the skipper who didn't seem to care. The resort itself is very tired but is beautifully located. It appears that very little money is being spent on maintenance Most of the front line staff had limited English which made communication somewhat difficult. The food was quite average and expensive for what was provided. The complementary breakfast was very basic.

Review 10:amazing location, great beach

Review 11:Some of the standards of the property were not as advertised. Many of the facilities are rundown. The island has alot of rubbish and broken glass on the beach which was disappointing. The salt water showers needed to be advertised on the website.

Review 12:The staff were friendly and helpful. The unit was clean and comfort with daily housekeeping, clean towels etc. Has a nice beach to watch the sunsets.

Review 13:Dogs need to be kept away from guests. Still friendly though . Just during the night could be noisy.

Review 14:The white sand beach, staff, island location, easy to daytrip back to mainland.

Review 15:The location is spectacular - beautiful clean white sandy beach just outside the bungalow door, safe to swim and snorkel. The staff were friendly and helpful.

Review 16:I have been back to this resort twice and i absolutely love it. I would recommend it to all. Everyone who works at the resort make the extra effort to make sure guests have a great stay. Visiting the village on the island is something everyone who stays should go and do.

Review 17:The resort is a little tired. Has great potential. Items requested on menu not available. Staff could do with a cocktail course. We got sick not sure if from food or water.

Review 18:Nice break from the winter. Good beach. Peaceful and quiet. Friendly staff.

Review 19:By far the worst service and hospitality I've experienced anywhere in the world. Check-in dates were wrong, rooms were wrong, bar & food service was non-existent and no discounts or refunds offered.

Review 20:The location, the facilities and the room

Review 21:While I love that the staff are sourced locally the service at the bar was incredibly slow. A bar till would greatly help as the day visitors can't add drinks to the room tab and taking the cash to and from reception makes things very slow. Also I appreciate you have targeted your menu towards westerners but please add more local cuisine to your menu! The best food we ate was given to us from some Tongan guests cooking their own "hungi" (BBQ).

Review 22:This is a beautiful place with wonderful Fafe to stay at! I thought for the price we paid our Fafe was so gorgeous with a beachfront porch! The rooms are very clean and beautiful but simple decor. Hammocks for lounging & reading can be found. Kayaks free to use. Everyone is very friendly!

Review 23:Nothing.

Review 24:it was the quiet season so ended up being the only people there. The fale had heaps of privacy looking over a beach. Could just simply run into the water. Staff were super tentative, providing us coconut when expressed the interest. Great place to snorkel. The grasshopper cocktail was the best. Overall great place, great staffs, great lobster.

Review 25:The music was very loud in the lounge area near the bar and the pool.

Review 26:The staff were very friendly, the food was good and the fale was spacious and comfortable and so close to the water.

Review 27:Food options are a little limited but that is to be expected on an island - and more than made up for by the suprise option of lobster one night! The shower was a bit hit and miss, but if you can cope with that its a great place to go on a budget!

Review 28:Beautiful beach, comfortable fale, amazing snorkelling and wonderful friendly staff who went out of their way to ensure my 3 year old had a great time. It was a quiet time of year so we were given a free upgrade on arrival. We will come back!

Review 29:The pillows were lumpy and uncomfortable & the menu choice was very limited.

Review 30:The location & grounds were picture perfect, better than expected. Staff were very friendly and rooms were great, right on the beach.

Review 31:Very run down and dated fales, with dirty floors. Common areas better. Lumpy bed mattresses, thin greyish looking towels. Breakfast had mediocare selection, fruit, toast, cereal and Tongan cake. Water pressure and temperatures flat that's constantly. This resort has seen better days. It looks like some fales have not been used for a long time and start to fall apart. Rubbish or rather old discarded stuff is scattered around the resort, under the deck and in the back of the main buildings. Boat transfer is in a shabby looking motorboat. Dogs on property not aggressive but looking emaciated. Wanted our room earlier than specified checkout for new guests arriving in the mirning.

Review 32:Beautiful location, unbelievably striking water colours, golden sand drenched in sun. Despite the poor state of the resort staff is very friendly and attentive to guest needs. Walking tour of the village sharing the Island with the resort is very interesting and conducted by an enthusiastic Tongan. Boat transfer was OK one way but on the return journey we hit big waves. fueled by strong winds. The captain looked relieved when we finally made it back to Nuku'alofa and apologised for the rough ride which took almost double the time. Internet free, available only in common area, had once trouble for half hour

Review 33:The hotel could do with a little shop as the restraunt had only a small menu.

Review 34:Beautiful island with really kind and happy staff! The hotel was great, the island is beautiful! The hotel is cheap and has great activities such as kayaking and snorkelling.

Review 35:Sunset Island Resort is a very peaceful place and would be an excellent getaway except for a few areas that require vast improvement. Although we arrived at a time of mourning that lasts for three days you still expect basics such as cold beer the fridges were not adequately supplied with enough power to operate them even beer placed in a freezer took a long time to become cold, very limited ice although the drinks list states on a bed of ice, not enough ice for mixed drinks, the menu remained the same for our stay and not much thought or effort was put into it with only one choice of a main meal at night for dinner. The accommodation is quite good except for the hot water which is all hot or all cold no happy medium and due to the lack of fresh water all the showers were in salt water. With a bit of investment and some thought this place has great potential to be a top of the range getaway. The staff with most Island resorts were very pleasant, easy to get along with however; had numerous excuses for why basic could not be provided.

Review 36:Staff Peacefulness of the Island Location

Review 37:Everything was exactly what we wanted - but it wasn't "five star" - no air conditioning, for instance, but fans kept you cool at night and mosquito netting ensured a great night's sleep.

Review 38:Location - small island but only 30 minutes by boat from main island. All accommodation is right on the water - white sand, crystal clear, warm water. Friendly staff. Perfect for a relaxing break. Excellent service, expansive bar and dining room, free wifi, swimming pool.

Review 39:Family bungalow was a bit run down and needed a good clean. Water in the shower was rather dirty as it came straight from the sea. Would have expected the dinner menu to be more authentic Tongan food and maybe changed every few days. A convenience store to buy bread, milk, snacks etc would be handy to have at the resort.

Review 40:Beautiful beach and great activities. Friendly and helpful staff. Loved our walk into Atata Village. Our children enjoyed playing with the local dogs on the resort. Really accommodating resort for people with families. Amazing family holiday!!!

Review 41:Fridge needed replacing. We defrosted it twice in 6 days so we could get door shut. Salt water showers most days cold some days no pressure and one day all good. Time some money spent.

Review 42:Location to beach was awesome and this truly is an idyllic location to unwind and relax. People are very friendly and welcoming.

Review 43:Just not enough toilet paper and my brothers room that he paid extra for had no hot water

Review 44:I loved the cocktails and also we got invited to the village for a church celebration and that was the highlight of our holiday as me and my brothers and sisters and mother loved it. Thank you also to our host who climbed a tree to get us fresh coconuts to drink in all it was an awesome time :)

Review 45:If I had to say something, then it seemed like there wasn't much sealife when snorkelling from the beach, however the daily boat snorkel offered good snorkelling. The toilet wasn't working on arrival but it was fixed immediately.

Review 46:The location is awesome. It's great to have a swimming pool as a swim option especially for the children. Having a boat to take you snorkelling was great to see the sealife and if lucky like us, the whales too. Bungalow was clean and comfortable. Staff were friendly especially Taniella. We thoroughly enjoyed our two night stay.

Review 47:Definitely not a flash resort but an amazing spot for relaxing and water sports. The whole focus of the staff is making sure you enjoy your time and all activities are free. I am definitely goin back.

Review 48:Would love to see more variety in the food on offer. Daily specials?

Review 49:The island is beautiful, the people very friendly and accommodating. This lovely little resort is easy to get to with nice snorkeling, kayaking, whale watching (in season), fishing and beach walks. All tide swimming and a small pool are a bonus. Just don't expect a glossy western resort.

Review 50:The quality of the food was very poor and the cost was very very high. Even basics like patato chips were hardly eadible as the oil tasted like it hadn't been changed in weeks. Fish was leathery and tough. Total lack of variety and the clincher was the smell of sewerage at meals combined with lots of flies. Maybe not suprising that we got gastro. Things improved while the Australian owner was there. The snorkelling was very average. The beach has a lot of seagrass and no coral except for hundreds of meters offshore. The "conservation" zone has people spear fishing in it each afternoon so don't expect to see anything worthwile.

Review 51:The staff were very friendly and if it weren't for this we would not have managed to find much enjoyment.

Review 52:clean water is hard to come by on the island. our shower was cold sea water only. which was no problem for us, but not to everybody's taste. 2l of drinking water was delivered to the room each day.

Review 53:a beautiful location with clear water, white sands and endless free activities. we had free access to kayaks, paddle boards and beach loungers as well as a free snorkel trip and kava drinking. the village tour was a highlight, this was also free although donations to the primary school were politely requested. the rooms are basic but beautifully presented and right on the beach.

Review 54:Nothing at all

Review 55:Bungalows metres from beach, serviced daily, clean and well presented. Friendly, helpful staff. Kayaks, snorkelling, fresh water pool, all available at no cost. Able to do as much or as little in a peaceful paradise.

Review 56:It's an island so the resources are little bit limited, meaning little bit more expensive food and less choice

Review 57:The island is absolutely stunning and there is usually only few guests Friendly stuff It's a nice accommodation however you should not expect 5 star resort.

Review 58:Found the food a little average, we had two vegetarians with us (one vegan) and the choices were extremely limited for them. Service was quite slow so remember you are on island time and just chill :) We booked two standard bungalows and one superior, actually no real difference so recommend you just book the standard.

Review 59:Loved the beautiful location and the fale's right on the beach. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful, village people were very friendly and welcoming. the fales were a good size, the beach stunning!!! We love dogs so having lovely friendly dogs around the island was a treat for us.

Review 60:Maybe the ferry to the island was a bit pricey, sometimes the beach was a bit dirty probably because of the village located in the other part of the island and some ship wrecks. Maybe they need a bit of renovations especially in common areas like pool and toilets in the hall. Some fales were destroyed as well. Also they should improve entertainment during night time.

Review 61:The beach, the clean water, the bush, the dishes were very nice, we had snorkel gear and kayak for free, the staff were very friendly.

Review 62:Would like a few more fresh vegetables in dinner menu. A cabbage/ carrot cole slaw each night with every dish would be good. Would like some more traditional Tongan meals on menu - we had lu ika one night and I loved it.

Review 63:Easy going low key resort with very friendly staff who are all from the local village - lovely service - nothing was too much trouble. Loved tropical fruit for breakfast and ota ika for entree. Enjoyed trying out speaking a little Tongan and everyone very encouraging. Appreciated activities organised such as Village Walk, Church; Tongan Dancing; snorkelling from the resort and whale watch with Deep Blue (Tongan owned registered operator).Very relaxing enjoyable holiday.

Review 64:We didn't like that there was a lot of good windsurf boards, masts, booms etc but NO sails in working order. As the four of us that went are all windsurfers it would have been great to have some sails available to go with the rest of the gear.

Review 65:We loved the back to nature relaxed feel of this resort. Also the resort and beach weren't too crowded, the staff were great, it is a fabulous place to unwind and relax. No shops or cars on the island so a great place to just kayak, swim, walk. Highly recommend Royal Sunset if you are looking for a put your feet up and relax holiday

Review 66:Food is pricey for what you get and there's no other option on the island.

Review 67:Great Fale huts on the beach, clean resort and pool.

Review 68:Noisy generator, smelly septic tank

Review 69:CALM SANDY WATER GREAT FOR KIDS TO SUP OR KAYAK

Review 70:The people, the location, the relaxed environment.

Review 71:Saddened at the state of some of the island dogs

Review 72:Beautiful & relaxing

Review 73:No showers

Review 74:Pretty

Review 75:Friendly staff & warm atmosphere

Review 76:Best place ever when you have reached total burn out....loved it

Review 77:The staff and locals were so friendly and helpful. Beautiful and relaxing setting, yummy food and lots of good laughs with the locals too.

Review 78:Price quite high for facilities offered.

Review 79:Snorkelling trip. Friendly welcome and helpful staff.

Review 80:rain & lack of any TV

Review 81:Staff , fishing, beach, pool great meals, leisure facilites, fales were great also

Review 82:staff are very friendly and they are locals, such a beautiful island to visit. thumbs up for the lovely service and hospitality. Pet name pluto is friendly as well.

Review 83:Food is a bit limited and a bit pricey...but you are on an island so you have to be realistic

Review 84:The staff are all from the village on the island and really care about the visitors. Not a polished plastic resort so don't expect the ritz...but I like that!

Review 85:Walking past the drainage/ sewage area- this really need to be sorted out! Fortunately the smell did not spread.

Review 86:Beautiful place. Very relaxed. helpful staff.

Review 87:...leaving to go home :(

Review 88:Staff are laid back and you quickly become friends

Review 89:Friendly, relaxed place, good activities available

Review 90:Friendly staff and excellent service

Review 91:This place is lower than a 1star dump, dirty, expensive and over priced. I WOULD NOT recommend that anybody stayed at this so called resort

Review 92:Snorkling by free, welcome drink, buffet for breakfast, very interesting village tour
