Reviews for Malau Lodge

Review 1:Breakfast wasn't always as stated, but staff were prepared to cook some of your own food as well.

Review 2:After having had a sleepless night in the heat and humidity we were able to transfer to an air conditioned room. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. Karioke & dance evening was set up to keep us amused, as was a movie evening. A canopie was set up so we could avoid the sun and enjoy the breeze.

Review 3:We requested a airport pick up, which was confirmed by the hostel. When we arrived there was no transportation, as due to the public holiday the hostel owner did not reach anyone. Unfortunately we were not informed of this, so we let all taxis go. We only found out after calling the hostel with thr help of the airline.

Review 4:- nice room with aircon quite centrally located

Review 5:over charged room rate from what was confirmed online. No hot water Shower door impossible to operate due to lost/broken rollers (been glass it is dangerous)

Review 6:Our booking said that we would pay in local currency, quoting US dollars which we took. Only to find out that we had to pay in the local Tongan dollars which cost us a lot more.

Review 7:Extremely friendly staff. Home away from home. Nothing too much trouble. We felt looked after in every way.

Review 8:I only spent one night at this place. Nonetheless I have no complaints.

Review 9:Friendly staff and a lovely room with a big and comfy bed. Fresh and clean bathroom. Close to all the shops and resturants downtown and also the harbour. Good, thoughtful breakfast. Very good price compared to other places nearby.

Review 10:Some soap would be nice. I didn't have any with me.

Review 11:The place is clean and tidy, perfectly presented, and the staff are so lovely and helpfull. One of the ladies even took us out to the agriculture show for the day. They had a stall showing poorer people how to recycle rubbish into sellable giftware. Happily took us past the pharmacy. Well presented lounge and kitchen areas to use.

Review 12:Super clean, new guesthouse a few blocks from "downtown." The staff is great, very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was delicious, especially the tropical fruit salad. The rooms was immaculate, in fact, all the areas of the house were exceptionally clean. The share bathroom again was super clean and modern with reliable hot water. Would definitely stay here next time!

Review 13:The hotel was ok, but disappointing given how much we paid. Breakfast was very simple (weetbix, toast, jam). Shower kept going hot and cold. Staff tend to loiter around - made us feel a bit uncomfortable. On departure day, one staff member told us to leave a tip for her - which we thought was pretty rude.

Review 14:Walking distance from the town centre. Free Wifi. Clean. Nice linen and towels. The adjoining family rooms with a shared bathroom were convenient.

Review 15:I was looking for a broom to sweep away the insects that snuck through the holes under the doors (so I didn't step on them). Maybe leave a broom in the kitchen/lounge area. Otherwise the new house was very tidy and the cleanliness of my room was of a very high standard.

Review 16:Hospitality of staff was gracious and warm. Everybody was respected and greeted with the same level of decorum.

Review 17:easy access to town and waterfront facilities building was brand new, modern, simple. breakfast was included and excellent, bacon and eggs and cerial and orange juice.

Review 18:It was super hot the first night we stayed and even with the fan on, we found it hard to sleep. Would have been good to have air-con in summer!

Review 19:The friendliness of everyone who worked at Malau Lodge; the location was close to the waterfront and the shops; the breakfast was lovely - we even had fresh coconut buns made for us one morning.

Review 20:The staff and facilities were wonderful. The breeze, that was constant, was helpful because of the humidity. They had bottled water, laundry services, and beautiful fruit every morning for breakfast.

Review 21:Be a bit wary of the shower - the thermostat has a mind of its own.

Review 22:Selita and all her staff (thanks Tina) were kind and solicitous beyond the call of duty. They organised a round the island trip and stepped in when our taxi broke down, ordered dinner for us on Sunday when restaurants were closed, helped when our flight home was disrupted and graciously let us stay in Malau Lodge at no extra charge. What lovely people!

Review 23:The staff were very helpful and welcoming. Nothing was a problem. We have been to Tonga four times now and this is by far the best place we have stayed at.

Review 24:Hard to come up with anything, but if pushed we'd mention that the ensuite shower to our groundfloor room had a way of changing temperature that was disconcerting, so be wary of that.

Review 25:Kindness, every courtesy and consideration shown beyond what we could have expected - helping us make a call to home when our onward travel plans went awry, arranging a taxi sightseeing trip and taking over when that vehicle broke down - too many things to mention - and all done with a generous heart.

Review 26:Don't expect luxury, but people who do their best to facilitate your stay in whatever way and a family-like atmosphere. An important issue for me: the WiFi reception was very dependable.

Review 27:Malau lodge was my first stay in the island and it was a great choice. As a solo traveller I felt immediately at home and comfortable. Lovely house and location close to the centre. Kept spotless and clean. Selita and Tina are helpful in any way you need. A nice mix between feeling at home and being indipendent and in your own space. Reccomended!

Review 28:We are not sure when we book if we will be located at Malau Lodge of Robyn's Nest. We have rebooked but don't know where to go when we get there

Review 29:We actually stayed at Robyn's Nest which was lovely. The location was perfect.

Review 30:The pillow was very large and made it uncomfortable to sleep so we slept without these. Otherwise it was fantastic.

Review 31:We were at the Robyns Nest site across the road from the Palace. Perfect location with a beautiful balcony overlooking the palace. Close to markets and town, everything you need in walking distance. Lovely house and staff were very friendly and helpful.

Review 71:A perfect base to explore the capital of Tonga and the hospitality shown by the staff is second to none. I would not hesitate to recommend this lodge to anyone visiting Nuku'alofa.

Review 72:This was my first visit to Tonga but I have travelled extensively. I could not have picked a more friendly, welcoming & perfect lodge for two overnight stays between a break in the Ha'apai group. The communication & all pick up/ transfers were faultless. Due to timing we asked for a half day tour to be organised for us - it was just brilliant, affordable & unexpected thoughtfulness with late lunch, towels, coconuts & more water provided with the wonderful Helen & Tony to guide us. Selita, Tina & Helen made our visit the best. What they organised as a surprise for my Mum's birthday was so generous & moving. Good location with brief walk to the centre of Nuku. Cannot praise these beautiful people enough & their lodge. Immaculate & faultless.

Review 73:The Wi Fi on the site was advertised as free. But found out upon arriving it was not. Overall a great experience

Review 74:The staff were friendly and really nice the bathroom and rooms were great and the kitchen was good. Location was great close to town.

Review 75:Nothing! Everything was better than expected :)

Review 76:Perfect location, 5 minutes walk either way to the main town area, or to the warf to visit many outer islands. The staff were the best! So accommodating and friendly, felt like we had known the staff for years!

Review 77:The manager seemed to get irritated with me when she found out that I'd made my own bookings for stuff eg) day tours. She obviously gets a commission for making the bookings.

Review 78:The manager went out of her way to orientate me to my surrounds and things to see and do. The breakfasts were amazing and you can eat them on a patio with a beautiful view of the garden. Its a 10-15 minute pleasant walk along the coast to down town. Feb and March is Monsoon season and when it rains it pours! You dont want to go out in it. The Lodge is a lovely place to hang out during the day. There is always staff there. They go out of their way to be helpful and friendly.

Review 79:A couple of misunderstandings regarding payment and free Internet etc. but the lodge took responsibility for this very nobly. It certainly will pay to email or make some sort of contact before your stay just to make sure everything is understood clearly. Things to look out for are Internet costs and also the currency of payment. Other than this the lodge is a fantastic place to stay

Review 80:Very friendly and helpful staff. Really made us feel welcome into their home and were so eager to please. Had just a couple of issues with miscommunications but Malau lodge took entire responsibility even tho it was most likely the error of booking.com. Would reccomend this place 100% to anyone.

Review 81:From the moment we arrived Selita, Tina and Helen were so friendly and hospitable. The best experience in Tonga. Everything from breakfast, rooms and conversation - top marks. Best place to stay - it really is a home away from home. They made you feel so welcome. I will definitely come back here next time I come to Tonga. I loved my stay in Tonga this was my first visit to Tonga and Malau Lodge made it even more of an Island Paradise experience.

Review 83:Hard beds but extra pillows solved that!

Review 84:The friendly welcome; the endless help from the owner; the location near to the center of Nukualofa; the mosquito wire over all windows.
