Reviews for Fafa Island Resort

Review 1:I didn't like how the rates are in Euro dollars. I think they should just be set in Tongan currency. The chicken and rice meal that was served for dinner was too salty.

Review 2:I liked the clean and warm shower, especially the outdoor bathroom. It really made me feel free. The beach was clean and private. The fale had everything you needed, mosquito nets and repellent in the bathroom and a great view. The staff was very attentive and catered to all our needs. I would definitely go back.

Review 3:These are more suggestions than complaints as our overall experience was fantastic: 1) We would have liked to have seen more of a selection for dinner (3 mains to choose from) and, in particular more seafood and local dishes on the menu (we were hanging out for lobster and raw fish and eventually went to Tongatapu for these dishes). To be fair, you can ask the chef to make a particular dish - which we didn't do. Meals on the island are on the pricey side for what they are but we did experience the odd stellar dish. The breakfast menu failed to capture our interest and the coffee was sadly quite weak (instant?). We took our own alcohol as we had heard it is very expensive on Fafa which was true. The meals were perfect sized for us as we are small eaters but if you have a ravenous appetite you may want to take lots of snacks. 2) Perhaps the staff could turn the small fridge in the fales on in advance so it is cold when the guests arrive? 3) The shower heads are very high and angled so you need to almost step out of the shower and squash into a corner in order to get under the stream. 4) Don't expect the local staff to be super friendly or attend to your every need. It is our experience that this behaviour is not just on Fafa but island-wide. 5) The mosquitoes bitting during the massage detracted from its benefits :(

Review 4:The island is stunning, uncrowded, private and very romantic. Our deluxe fale was absolutely perfect! The bed was extremely comfortable and large. We didn't use the second room but if you have teenage children, its distance from the main room would be appreciated. In my opinion, small children aren't conducive to the preservation of the islands tranquility so I'd consider a different holiday for such families. We loved the double hammock, although be aware that coconuts directly above pose as a hazard, particularly when windy. We didn't have much of a view from our fale despite being very near to the beach but the authentic style and comfort of the fale made up for it. The complimentary insect repellent was very much appreciated as was the small fridge. In our opinion, the occasional downpour while we were in the fale added to the experience and the fale remained dry. Bridgit the manager is extremely pleasant and very helpful. It was very windy when we were there so snorkling wasn't the best and kayaking was out of the question - but we enjoyed the serenity and tropical conditions regardless. Look out for the giant clams - amazing! Be aware that the sea transfer to the island is closer to 1 hour (some travel guides put it as 30 min) and can be quite rough although the skipper will ask you to move under cover if he thinks you are going to get wet. Overall a fabulous trip!!!

Review 5:The only complaint we had was the fact that people were allowed to smoke at the restaurant. It would be nice to eat your meals without people being allowed to smoke near where you eat.

Review 6:The rooms were gorgeous and spacious. The grounds were beautiful, the food was delicious! Waking up to sound of parrots in the morning, reading in the hammock, kayaking to neighbouring islands in the sun - whilst sipping out of a coconut, watching the sunset at a candle lit dinner, everything, we loved everything!! All in all it was the perfect holiday and we'll definitely be back!!!

Review 8:Had an amazing time at the resort. They are full of surprises here, they know how to make people happy! And the staff is so friendly. Everything looks so beautiful, especially the outdoor bathroom! Wonderful place!!!

Review 9:My partner is a little over 6'1" and the King bed was actually two singles placed side by side without a headboard. He didn't enjoy his ankles hanging off the end and his pillow falling off the bed, and I didn't enjoy the gap between the mattresses. However we told Management who added extra underlays for us for the following night and allowed us to shift the bed towards the wall. This helped a great deal. However on our third night the cleaner must have taken back the extra underlays as the gap returned. It didn't ruin our stay however. Would still recommend Fafa to friends. But if you are over 6ft tall, I would tell them when booking so that they might place you in a Fale with an actual kingsize bed.

Review 10:The island is great, it's beautiful and you feel very secluded. Hardly see other people unless you go to the restaurant. The Fale was beautiful and clean with all ammenities required. Outdoor bathroom was a treat. Hammock for two outside the fale was put to good use. Very relaxing! The food is pricey as you would expect from a captive market situation, but is much better standard than most on offer in Tonga. There is a fridge in your room, so I recommend you bring your own drinks & snacks to cut down on the costs. The owners and most of the staff there were very helpful and friendly. A couple of the bar staff in the morning/lunch periods didn't respond to me when I asked if I could order drinks which was quite confusing - I think this is why some other reviews said they were "rude". It's not agressive rudeness, maybe a language thing... Not sure. At dinner time the service was always very good.

Review 11:Each of the fales was in its own semi-secluded spot with several areas outside set up for the occupants only to enjoy - loungers in garden, loungers on 'own' section of the beach, and a hammock between the palm trees. Very welcoming site managers and friendly and obliging Tongan and Fijian staff.

Review 12:It was a beautiful setting and our stay at Fafa exceeded our expectations. We totally relaxed and did nothing energetic aside from some swims and walks around the island. The food was fantastic. Loved the staff dance performance.

Review 13:They price everything in Euro and I paid when I arrived so I never really knew the price of things- yet the price for food while we were there was in local currencies-so they mixed up prices in difference currencies - I really did not like this and would consider another place next time

Review 14:Staff was nice and helpful, place very charming and everything very private- food was good- limited choices but I thought that was fine- snorkelling was good just off the beaches

Review 15:The highlight for us had to be the outdoor bathroom in our fale. The privacy and relaxing environment was just what we needed. The staff were helpful and the food was amazing.

Review 16:This was a return trip to Fafa Island for us.We wondered if it had changed much and if it would delight us in the same way as the last visit. We returned to Paradise! From the moment we stepped ashore I knew we were right to visit again. It is a small, stunningly beautiful, tranquil island.surrounded by a reef and lagoon that is a delight to snorkel.Welcome drinks were served in the beachfront Fale style restaurant while our bags were taken to our Fale. The restaurant was just as I remembered it. Perfect. Even one staff member was still there. This time we had the Honeymoon Fale....wow. I loved our last Fale but this took the cake.We wandered down a secluded, sandy, tropical path to our home for the week. A tall shingle roof supported by soaring coconut poles and rafters, woven palm exterior walls, huge verandah complete with table and chairs and swing seat for two. In the private beachfront garden, there are two sun lounges and the pefect hammock swinging between 2 coconut palms. From the verandah about 20 paces away is the beach and lagoon.Enter the Fale through a choice of several double sets of glass doors, step into a gloriously spacious room with mellow timber floors, a huge beautifully netted bed, two attractive and comfortable cane seats and a ladder to the loft. Yes the honeymoon fale has a loft, set way up high in the rafters with a huge netted daybed and floor to ceiling height louvers revealing the expanse of ocean beyond the palms.A perfect spot to chill out after a day in the sun.Off the bedroom is a small tustic walk in robe complete with safe.At each side of the bed is a door to the bathroom. The outdoor bathroom. We thought the last one was perfect, but this one topped it. It had a huge private garden and there is nothing so refreshing as a shower in the outdoors...when you know it's private! To get to the resturant either wander up the island interior on the sandy path or stroll along the beach.

Review 17:Chocolate mousse could have been on the menu more often. ;-)

Review 18:Nice and clean resort, amazing location, very friendly staff. Beautiful re-vow ceremony in the sunset on the beach on our wedding anniversary. :-)

Review 19:Wine list and only a cheap sauvignon blanc option by glass. Disappointed when the management organized a fishing trip which didn't depart! After waiting around and no one at reception.

Review 20:Private accommodation, coral and fish life. Fish dishes.

Review 21:This place is idyllic- everything was good from the pickup at the airport and transfer by boat out to the island to the lovely fales to the excellent helpful staff and well kept island and protected reef. It's not cheap but it's worth it

Review 22:Experienced problems with getting sufficiently hot water for shower. Air temperature cooler than expected. It is their winter, so no as hot as Samoa or Fiji at this time of year.

Review 23:beautiful location, lovely fales ,relaxing atmosphere, scenic, restaurant complex and area very attractive

Review 24:Not much at all! One of the staff was a little moody... Maybe he was just having a bad day? That's only if I had to pick anything!

Review 25:The location is perfect, peaceful and just divine. If you're after a relaxation holiday then this is it! The food is delicious - fresh fish, lobster and ota ika - yum!

Review 26:Access to hot water/jug to make tea/coffee at a convenient time in our rooms. Mini bar would have been good too.

Review 27:The staff were helpful, friendly, and polite -especially the Fijian lady who served us meals and drinks and the German staff member who showed us our rooms and introduced the resort and its facilities.

Review 28:Mistake in number of proper to fe picked up, ended having to wait 35+ min despite already very late so got to the Island even later. Manager apologised. Transfer is very expensive and should work more reliably than in this situation. Everything: food, drinks, deserts transfers are expensive. No kettle but thermos with hot water deliverd in am.

Review 29:Beautiful fale with private beach access and hammock. Neat outdoor shower and toilet in a private garden. Bed netting. Day bed. 15 min walk around the Island. Person who took us to the Island was safety cautious, wore a swim vest himself and made sure all had them on. Library idea. Island a Small paradise.

Review 30:A few seriously unfriendly staff, seemingly bereft of manners, who are unavoidable due to the fact that every meal and drink must be had at the restaurant. Travelling a long way and spending a lot of money to be sneered at leaves a sour taste in the mouth.

Review 31:The island itself is naturally beautiful. The design and construction of the fales are a feat of pared-down luxury. The acoustic singing from the Tongan staff on the "Island Night" was a privilege to witness - one of our favourite memories from our time in Tonga.

Review 32:Nothing that we didn't like. We felt very fortunate to be at the resort.

Review 33:Fantastic location, stunning beaches, great snorkelling, excellent food, beautiful Fales.

Review 34:The double bed is made up of 2 thin single mattress's on a hard board, no springs. Cant lock Fala, so items could be unsafe if a person did choose to steal while you are away. Staff need alot of improving on Customer service especially the man who has been there for 25 years, too long and too unfriendly. We felt we made more effort to be nice to them, when the staff should be making the effort to be nice to us -making us feel good. SNORKELING OK but extremely deep at high tide which could be dangerous for younger children if not good swimmers. 5 out of 10 for seeing fish Very expensive menu, but very nice too-

Review 35:We loved the Island and the private Fala's, we loved looking at the water and the hammack was great.

Review 36:Could have provided a broom to sweep the sand, plus an umbrella for when it rained

Review 37:Great quiet seclusion, with good snorkeling right in front of the fale

Review 38:I found some of the wait staff unhelpful at times This is not fitting for 5 star resort. Alcohol extremely expensive.

Review 39:Fale's are first rate Transport to and from was easy.

Review 40:At this resort you feel like family; from the moment you arrive to the very sad departure as everyone gathers on the beach to wave you farewell. The hostess Brigit is professional, and instills a sense of comfort that the der of the team reinforce. A beautiful location, relaxing with good food and perfect sunsets. We will be back.

Review 41:Water pressure in showers low. No signage for wharf if independently arriving, the locals will point you in the right direction.

Review 42:Fafa island is close to the mainland so easily accessible

Review 43:The staff were awesome, very helpful and friendly and sociable The location was perfect The island was so beautiful Food was always good A true island experience Very relaxing

Review 44:What's not to like when the sun shines, you get to feel like you are on your own island and the staff are friendly and attentive. Simply we loved it all.

Review 45:My adult daughter and I spent a wonderful 3 days relaxing in the beautiful island paradise of Fafa. There were just a dozen other guests - although with a maximum of 40 guests it will never feel crowded. I look forward to returning...next time with my husband.

Review 46:Beautiful, great food, great staff.

Review 47:peaceful, lovely staff, great food, perfect chill out

Review 48:Nothing

Review 49:Food accommodation beach and staffs

Review 50:N/a

Review 51:Total relaxation. The 1st time my sister & I had been on holiday together for over 50 years

Review 52:Food was great, but pricy. Very helpsome and friendly people.

Review 53:The Food

Review 54:Amazing beach front fales

Review 55:The friendly and helpful staff

Review 56:Having to leave.

Review 57:It is a little piece of paradise made that little bit better by the staff.

Review 58:breakfast not inkluded.

Review 59:Great beach, and snorkeling. Very nice fale, with even a daybed and openair restroom. Staff.

Review 60:Food, whilst good, was limited in menu choices.

Review 61:Stunning location and great snorkelling straight off the beach. Perfect for unwinding and relaxing.

Review 62:restricted menu

Review 63:Location peace and quiet privacy

Review 64:Meal quality was not always great. Prices were high and use of Euro asa pricing mechanism should not be permitted. The best kayaks weretaken by various guests on arrival and not freed up for the rest ofour time on Fafa.

Review 65:Cleanliness, privacy and location of our fale. The beach and bushtrack. Ability to use the ferry free for trips in to Nukualofa. Diningarea is great.

Review 66:The staff and food were simply outstanding. So was the location and peaceful surroundings. I would recommend Fafa Island to any couple looking for a relaxing holiday.

Review 67:I thought that the delivery of hot water every morning was unnecessary and jugs in the room would easily be a better alternative.

Review 68:I thought the staff were lovely and very friendly. The location of the fale was quite private, fronting on to the beach and presenting a feeling of isolation, which is what we were looking for.

Review 69:Not much

Review 70:Friendliness. Happy staff
