Reviews for Olini Lodge

Review 1:The best place to stay in Tongatapu! The whole family takes excellent care of their guests and make you feel like it's your home too. They gave us great tips on what to do and showed us around the town. One could even borrow their car to see the island. Overall, a fantastic experience and will definitely stay here again if visiting Tongatapu.

Review 2:Located a little way out of town. We walked there in about half an hour, and the family were very happy to drop us off or pick us up, so it's not a "dislike" at all, just something you might want to be aware of if location is hugely important to you.

Review 3:The people! Previous reviews I'd read had emphasised this and it was certainly true. A very friendly family that went the extra mile, for instance by picking us up in town in the evening after we'd gone to a restaurant, or providing a rental car for us to use for the day at minimal expense. Nice, clean, comfortable house.

Review 4:Nothing

Review 5:Wonderful hosts - treated us like family from the very beginning. Even treated us to a delicious seafood lunch! Definitely glad we stayed here.

Review 6:We booked Olini Lodge as we left Auckland airport for somewhere on our first night in Tonga. Very relaxed place, walk in the door and straight away your at home. Great hosts, useful advice and information, good service. So good we returned to Olini Lodge at the end of our trip as well.

Review 7:Everything was good. There was nothing not to like.

Review 8:This bed and breakfast inn is located just outside of town. Our host was very friendly and accommodating. He e-mailed me prior to our arrival and provided excellent communication. He even took us out for a tour of the island. I would definitely recommend staying here and I will do so again on my next visit.

Review 9:We stayed at the Olini Sept 1st to 5th, 2015. Just for context, we are well seasoned travelers. The proprietor's Saia and Mary Fonua are the nicest kindest people you could ever meet. They treat you like family. While we were there, previous guests came back just to say hi (and so did we). They also know where all the best restaurants are. Try their favorite fish place by the docks. Saia will happily act as your taxi. He will transfer you to/from the airport at any hour. He enjoys talking to tourists about their experiences, and the culture of Tonga. He can also set you up with a guide to tour the island. Saia is very easy going, he even lent us cash when we needed it and paid for our guide. Of course it was added to our bill. It felt like this was a one stop shop for everything in Tonga while we were there. Mary is an excellent cook. We said we love Indian food and she cooked our favorites (Aloo Gobi and Kheer). Mary also use to be a nurse. She took my husband to a clinic when he got a serious cough. How great is that! Don't expect four star accommodation, the rooms are like those in a typical house (it is a typical house). Everything is clean. They even have spare clothes in case your luggage doesn't arrive with you. We recommend the king room as it has it's own bathroom. You have the run of the kitchen, you are expected to replace what you use. There is laundry and Internet service available as well. Overall we can highly recommend this lodge.

Review 10:Saia and Mary are great hosts, making you feel like more than just guests. Mary's cooking is incredible - a real taste of home. Both willing to help you explore the island and organise anything else you need. The rooms were comfortable, there were cups of tea ready for all times of day, the facilities were exactly what you need. Hoping I get to go back and stay again.

Review 11:It's Tonga and not a 5 star hotel but a lodge. So don't expect the great luxury.

Review 12:If you want to feel like at home stay there. The people are just so wonderful. I so glad that I've been staying there.

Review 13:I had a short overnight stay and was thoroughly spoilt. My room was upgraded for free. My local host was very friendly and has a great sense of humour. I would definitely recommend and will stay longer next time.

Review 14:It's about a 40 minute walk to downtown, so a bit far but it's a nice walk.

Review 15:The owners and staff are wonderful, very welcoming, warm and knowledgeable about the area.

Review 16:That i cannot complain for anything :)

Review 17:Everything, especially owners. They are so warm, so open and great people. It's not only the lodge, You really can fell as a part of their Tongan family, their place is real Home Away From Home. There is no better place to stay in Tonga.

Review 18:The stay here was more than we could of hoped for. Asai and Mary kindly showed and shared Tonga and their culture with us. Asai was a super star giving us a guided tour on two days of the Island, we got to beautiful places we would not of known of, he answered all our ceaseless questioning with a natural patience and pride in his own country and identity. Both Mary and Asai helped us to an fro with their personal transport making our stay extremely easy. The hot water mentioned by others only had become apparent as we left and the plumbers were called to fix so should be rectified. Asai is a very generous host with his time and other personal expenses, we thoroughly enjoyed the stay, thank you.

Review 19:Not directly in the city center, but there are Busses and Taxis so it's no problem!

Review 20:Greatest hospitality ever! Mary and Saia help you with whatever you need!! Delicious breakfast! Good wifi!

Review 21:The shower was cold and the wifi didn't work. It seemed to have been the case for a while. The owner offered to use his laptop which is nice but can't work. I have all of my emails etc setup on my phone.

Review 22:Staff is friendly

Review 23:The rooms downstairs are a bit musty and need to have some cobwebs cleaned away. Ask for a room in the house upstairs as they are much better. Also the shower downstairs was a bit wonky, only a few streams of water, again upstairs facilities are better.

Review 24:The family at Olini Lodge are amazing, very friendly and helpful with information. We felt like we were part of the family for our short stay. The communal kitchen area is a great place to cook or sit an chat. Good wifi in the house.

Review 25:The shower temperature fluctuated a bit but appart from that the accommodation was has perfect.

Review 26:The hosts were really welcoming and caring. They shared both their knowledge of Tongan culture and the local food with us.

Review 27:I have bought this accomodation in AUD on bookings.com, the owner before we left he sit with us and he told us we need to pay, he said it to us it advantage of him that we can comfortably pay at the spot. He charged to us $120 TOP. It was actually 80+$ AUD, I bought this accomodation for a $71 and I decided for it because that was my budget and we felt it like a fraud. He has charged to us $6 TOP for teas, then we used some ingredients and he told us absurd prices. And uncomfortably he was there whole day, because he lives there, he pointed to each object to us what cuttlery to use, where to find the plates, where to sit, I was feeling such as child without breathing and freedom. He slept in the diving room. One think was positive he gave it to us more expensive room but charged for what have been ordered by us, later he used that such as he gave us advantage. Just strategy because he did not want to feel us mystificated. It was at the beggining of city, so far from the centre. We can recommend SELLA'S Guesthaus, what was amazing, in the centre, $35 per night double room. I was dissaponted most of the Tongan people just think how to take money of you. Regards JIRI and VERA

Review 28:The environment was good looking, we loved kitchen.

Review 29:We loved everything about Olini lodge from the location to the wonderful staff..we would highly recommend this place to anyone who's wanting to travel to tonga on a vacation..

Review 30:I loved everything about Olini Lodge, Especially our host. Made us feel so at home and part of his own family. Highly recommend this to all family and Friends

Review 31:The traffic can be noisy first thing in the morning.

Review 32:You don't just stay at the Olini Lodge, Saia acts as your holiday planner and facilitator and organiser. He will drive you around, offer lifts, organise trips to the other islands, resorts and restaurants and does all of this in a way that reflects the love he has for Tonga.

Review 33:It's common for people to own a few chickens and a rooster. Unless you are staying somewhere remote without neighbours there is a good chance of a rooster within earshot. We also stayed at fafa resort and they had noisey pukekos. It's an easy fix though, just bring some ear plugs.

Review 34:We liked our host. They are knowledgeable and helpful and hospitable. They picked up fruit from market stalls and dropped us off and picked us up from town. We got a tour around the island which was fun. What we really appreciated was how well they looked after us. They didn't add anything to the price of things. The price they charge is either the same or less then you will find in town.

Review 35:The casual and welcoming "family" environment. The great conversations with the manager and team. The fact that they were interested in me and what I was doing - and they were happy to drive me places!

Review 36:Nothing much besides the weather.

Review 37:Open and welcoming. If you need travelling assistance or food.Owners can provide you with this.Breakfast is usually free.

Review 38:This was the warmest welcome, we ever got while travelling! Olini and her parents are great hosts, caring for you like for a familiy member! Saia seems to be the secret king of tonga, arranging everything you like and showing you his island with immense pride! Thanks for the great stay, when back to tonga, there will surely be no other place to stay for us!

Review 39:The only slightly negative was that the location was not very central. Not really walking distance but i took the bike which was perfect and it is no problem to get a ride or a taxi.

Review 40:The family who owned the place, Olini and ger parents took so well care about me. The father Saia drove me around and showed ne everything. I felt more like a family friend visiting then a tourist.

Review 41:You might come to expect the same hospitality and high standards at other places in Tonga and be disappointed to some extent...

Review 42:Malo e lelei! If you're the kind of traveler who likes to experience local culture and explore off the beaten track than this is your place to stay! Saia and his daughter 'Olini (namesake of the lodge) will make you feel right at home during your stay and all facilities are at a good standard (don't expect a 5-star hotel, though). Although I had booked a single room, Saia gave me a double room without extra charge as it wasn't booked at the time. Make sure you try the food at some of the non-Western places in town and you will return home a different person with many new friends!

Review 43:- Excellent staff, very friendly, great knowledge about the town & country - Everything was easily arranged including tours, boat trips and car rental for very good price ("We need a car today" "Ok, it's xx TOP and it will be here in 10 minutes") - Building is well kept, nice and clean - Location within walking distance to town or 5 TOP taxi ride. - Wifi available to check emails etc.

Review 44:leaving!!

Review 45:This is staying with a local family at its best. Saia and his daughter Olini do everything possible to make sure you enjoy your stay with them. The room was basic and we shared facilities but this was never a problem as there are so few of you staying. The breakfast was ample and the wifi free. Their inside knowledge meant we saw many things we wouldn't have done elsewhere and we made a life long friend.

Review 46:None really! I love every moment spend here at Olini Lodge.

Review 47:Outstanding customer service by very warm, flexible and friendly owners. Facilities are excellent. It is overall a very clean and welcoming environment with very artistic displays of art and floral arrangement. Everything from water bottles, wi-fi service to free healthy breakfast are provided and it sure is value for money. The location is excellent as it has easy access to Nuku'alofa and it is right next to Vaiola Hospital. Room is quiet and always provides a very comfortable bed and a good night's sleep. The balcony provides a very aesthetic and calming view of the Fanga'uta lagoon especially at night. Overall, I am a very haapy and pleased customer and would, with no hesitation, highly recommend this accomodation to prospective customers looking for accomodation in Tonga. Malo Saia and Olini for your fantastic hospitality.

Review 48:nothing

Review 49:sia was a great host loved talking to him he is very good with his guest and shows them around and takes them to exciting places with out any charge .

Review 50:You feel home away from home! The best choice I made in my trip. Extremely friendly people and a wonderful island. I wish I could have staid longer. The lodge and the owner are lovely and try to make your stay so beautiful that you don't want to leave. I definitely would have liked to stay and I will surely come back! By the way: only place that offers free Internet. Thank you for making my stay a wonderful experience.

Review 51:The host and his daughter Olini will bent over to make you feel welcome and at home. Tea/coffee, snacks and good advice on what to do in Tongatapu is always available. They share Tongan culture with open hearts. This small b&b was planned for a stopover before an international flight but it was certainly one of our highlights in Tonga.

Review 52:What we didn't like about Olini Lodge was leaving! We arrived as strangers and felt we left as friends.

Review 53:Olini and her father Saia made us feel so welcome. Saia is a fantastic ambassador for Tonga. The guesthouse is on the main road into town and we enjoyed getting on and off the local buses into town and back for less than $1. Having access to the laundry and kitchen at any time was great. Eating breakfast at the same huge square table with the biggest lazy susan ever, was a good way to meet and interact with guests from around the globe. Olini Lodge is owned and managed by Tongans. I give it my highest recommendation.

Review 54:Nothing.

Review 55:Welcoming atmosphere, comfy rooms, good breakfast. Sia happy to take us or drop us anywhere and charged very reasonable prices. Tour was great.

Review 56:Our host Saia met us at the airport and gave us a very warm welcome on our first visit to Tonga. He is a great ambassador for Tonga. We enjoyed chatting to the other guests over a lovely breakfast.

Review 57:Noise from road could be loud at the weekend.

Review 58:Saia and Olini are the perfect hosts. Saia's was attentive, helpful, generous with his time, energy and advice. We loved his sense of humour and happy spirit. He greeted and treated us like old friends. Thank you for making our first trip to Tonga so wonderful.

Review 59:my husband and I stayed there for 1 night for transit to Auckland. The room we booked has bathroom and is very spacious. We asked the owner, Saia to help look for a half tour for us and finally he brought us to blow holes with reasonable price.

Review 60:I don't have any complaints.

Review 61:The owner really wants you to enjoy his country and learn about his culture ... way more than making a profit. Enjoy his humor and his stories. Let him take you on a tour of the island instead of paying a well advertised tour company. You will get a more interesting tour and will pay far less for it.

Review 62:Awesome family to stay with, very hospitable. Felt like home away from home!

Review 63:Room was regularly cleaned, and hospitality shown by staff was second to none.

Review 64:This couple are fantastic. Very helpful and fun.

Review 65:So homely, and Fonua family so welcoming just made me feel at home, value for money and would highly recommend.

Review 66:I loved everything about this beautiful place. They really know how to treat people (very friendly)

Review 67:Very friendly and helpful hosts who went the extra mile for all their guests and made you feel at home from the first moment of arriving.

Review 68:wonderful host and comfortable accomodation.

Review 69:Premises are only average. Small room. Shower and toilets shared.

Review 70:Charming hosts.

Review 71:Everything! Saia and family could not have been more welcoming, helpful, caring and hospitable. We can't wait to come back!!

Review 72:Breakfast was very healthy for the price of stay

Review 73:The facilities were clean and the staff were really friendly.

Review 74:We enjoyed it all

Review 75:We were so well looked after taken and shown places we would never have known about on our own out for meals at night it was amazing

Review 76:Had a great time & Saia was the perfect host. This was my second visit, this time with my parents & I will book again. Highly recommended!

Review 77:Everything was fine

Review 78:Excellent they treat people friendly

Review 79:Owner is very friendly and helpful. Rooms are clean and breakfast is superb!

Review 80:The place needs a good clean from top to bottom! Overpriced

Review 81:The owner's very friendly and helpfull

Review 82:Couldn't stay long enough

Review 83:Very friendly and welcoming staff

Review 84:Location a bit noisy on the main road into town. Rooms need reading lamps.

Review 85:Saia is a fantastic host ... attentive, considerate, and entertaining. The facilities are clean, well kept. Saia is rightly proud of his guest house.

Review 86:What an amazing place! And Siai is the best Host! Absolutely recommend it. And.. will be back as soon as possible! Siai took us on a great tour of the island... seen things that are definitely off the beaten track!! AWESOME.

Review 87:I agree with Peter. The worst part is that the holiday in Tongatapu was all too short, and we had to return back home to winter and work.

Review 88:Olini's host Siaia is devoted to being the best possible host ever at this lodge. He loves meeting new people, young or old, and seems to gain great pleasure out of introducing each one of his guests to all the best places in Tongatapu. Anything a guest wishes to see or experience, Saia can find a way to accommodate.

Review 89:The mosquitoes are a real overkill especially if you are a "palanga". Comfort can be improved by installing ultrasound devices instead of using chemical spray.

Review 90:Saia is a wizard who captivates you and wins your heart within first minute of conversation. Not only that he picks you up from the airport and makes you feel like home, he drives you around the island to attend parties and beyond all he is an excellent guide. He brings you to some places nobody was before. The daughter Olini is very kind and helpful. I had an excellent time. I am sure I will come back. Thank you!

Review 91:Can't think of anything!

Review 92:Olini Lodge is a true home from home. Our host Sia was so welcoming, making sure everything was just right for our trip to this beautiful island. Definitely recommend Olini Lodge if you wish to learn about the real Tonga.

Review 93:The owner Saya is a great host. He takes great care of all guests like family. We were only with him for three days but felt as if we have known him and his family a lifetime. He will make sure that your experience in Tonga is the BEST!

Review 94:I liked everything about my stay in Olini's Lodge. Great environment and atmosphere and it's like everyone say, the breakfasts are amazing! Many thanks Siosaia for providing me with a wonderful time over there.

Review 95:Nothing it was great

Review 96:Olini Lodge is clean, conveniently located (Saia is also more than willing to give lifts into town) and very friendly. It is a guesthouse in the true sense in of the word. You meet people from all over the world, chat in the very comfortable lounge or on the spacious verandah and then share a meal - breakfast is great and the dinner that was prepared for us one night was sumptuous. Saia and his family really make you feel welcome and are genuinely interested in you as well as exchanging views on a range of topics. Saia is the consummate host and tour guide, who loves his country and will do anything to make your stay enjoyable and memorable. A great place to stay, we would recommend it to anyone. Thank you Saia (Snowy)

Review 97:Everything was pleasing.

Review 98:Delicious breakfast and the chance to meet people from all over the world. A special chance to be hosted by a Tongan family and experience their culture and traditions. Friendly towards children. Hospitality at its best.

Review 99:Leaving Olini Lodge and Tonga.

Review 100:The relaxed atmosphere, the "home from home" feeling, "Snowy"s sense of humour and generous sharing of resources and time, the sumptuous breakfasts, and Sunday night meal was a real gourmet experience. I stayed in various accommodations while in Tonga and Olini Lodge was by far the place where I relaxed the most. I would highly recommend Olini Lodge to anyone in need of an island experience and "mixing with the locals". The view from the balcony makes one immediately feel on holiday.

Review 101:Having to say goodbye and tear myself away from Olini Lodge!

Review 102:Olini Lodge was by far the friendliest, most fun and interesting place I have ever stayed! I have travelled throughout Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand and nowhere I stayed can rival Olini for the feeling of a true home away from home. It's superb for a number of reasons. The location is fantastic, the beds large and comfy, rooms and shared facilities are all very clean. The breakfast of local fruits, toast and freshly baked cakes was not only delicious, but sitting around the table with fellow travelers and our host, Siosaia, really felt like sitting around the table with your own family. The conversation was always fun and interesting. My husband and I were also told to feel at ease helping ourselves to tea, coffee and snacks throughout the day from the well-stocked kitchen. Night times at the lodge were also fantastic fun! We would sit around with Siosaia and our new friends, everyone sharing their alcohol, songs and stories as if we had known each other all our lives. The lodge was always full of laughter and fun. On top of this, one of the great highlights was Siosaia's unique "getting lost in Tonga tour" where he brought us to some of the secret corners of Tongatapu island, the scenery was so beautiful, raw and wild and we never even saw one other tourist. I really would say this tour is a must if you are staying at the lodge. And ensure you ask to be "blown up" on the tour; you won't stop laughing at the unique force of nature! In short, do not stay anywhere else if you are coming to Tongatapu!

Review 103:Olini Lodge is like a home away from home. The host, Siosaia, was very welcoming and friendly - there was nothing he wouldn't help with. The lodge is very clean and comfortable, allowing for a great night's sleep. I enjoyed Siosaia's 'Lost in Tonga' tour, where I got a real introduction to Tongan life and saw the main sights on Tongatapu.

Review 104:Noise of road traffic at times but hospitality of hosts made up for this.

Review 105:Excellent attention to care and making our stay memorable. We were treated like family and all our needs were met before we asked at times. Tour was fantastic.

Review 106:A nicer host you will not find. Saia helped us with everything, from checking flights to driving us out after dinner for cake in town! It was a pleasure to stay at his guesthouse.

Review 107:He rooms are on the second floor - short climb up a flight of stairs, travelers with heavy trolley luggage should take note. Also, complimentary internet access for checking emails is available in Olini but limited in data usage (like all places in Tonga). Olini can arrange a separate internet package for travelers who have moderate to heavy usage.

Review 108:My friend and I stayed at Olini on our recent trip to Tonga. Wewere looking for a transit hotel and chose it for the positivereviews we read.In a word, our experience in Olini was "Excellent". Olini is more of a home lodge. A very comfortable one. Slightly out of the way from the airport, our host was very knowledgeable about activities in Tongatapu. He had lots to share with first time travelers who had limited knowledge on the place. Our rooms were clean and comfortable for our stay. We enjoyed our stay so much, we arranged a second visit on our way back. This time, our host even arranged a nice dinner for us. It was a pleasant surprise to see rice (Asian staple) served since it wasn't a Tongan staple food. Our host had once again amazed us with his thoughtfulness.

Review 109:Siosaia the host was extremely friendly and helpful. He is a larger than life character who knows how to look after his guests. I highly recommend this place to stay.

Review 110:Some people may find the trek into town long but you can always ask Soisaia (the manager) for a lift.

Review 111:In grading systems this may not equate to a 5/6 star rated facility but the service & hospitality is 6 star all the way. I would recommend this establishment to any type of traveller and since starting my travels 2 & half years ago this is by far the best value for money establishment I have stayed in.

Review 112:After traveling 120 countries, I'd like to endorse and repeat exactly same review which Jorge wrote below on Feb 11th 2013. The owner Saia is a matured gentleman with incredible kindness. He made his best effort to make himself sure that guests staying at his lodge were comfortable. He loves Samoa thus he is passionate to entertain guests in his home country Tonga. Olini lodge is a must stay place when you are in Tonga.

Review 113:If you come from airport, easy to find, directly at the main road to town If you like animals like cocks, roosters and dogs – the surroundings will serve you

Review 114:This is not a hotel, it is a personal family guest house. Excellent !! Very very friendly and helpful hosts for all of your needs and wishes. Excellent and extended breakfast all day. Cleanest room in Tonga and South Pacific. Bathroom and shower for Tonga is excellent Large parking space View to the lagoon from Patio Location overall is really recommendable

Review 115:Very nice clean lodge, a little bit out of town, but have all the facilities you need for a good comfortable stay. The best thing about the stay for me was the friendly atmosphere, and the guy in charge, Siosaia, is a great host. As a solo traveller, I definitely felt included in the "family" and he showed us the incredible sites around the island, and we went on a hunt for ice cream! Siosaia loves cheese. So if you want to get into his good books, bring him some cheese (it's expensive in Tonga).
