Reviews for Huys van Leyden
Review 1:Nothinf
Review 2:Where do I start, from the moment we arrived the staff were warm, welcoming, friendly and very professional. The room and general decor of the hotel are designed with impeccable taste. The bed was extremely comfortable and the room was so peaceful with a beautiful view. The breakfast was delicious and the staff again were so attentive and kind. Would recommend this unique and beautiful hotel to everyone.
Review 3:There could easily fit in a 6th bed. Also, a hot tub was promised via the pictures, but we could not find it. Also, tourist tax was not included in the price, which I find stupid
Review 4:Lots of space
Review 5:perfect
Review 6:An elegant boutique hotel (only 5 rooms) in a beautiful, immaculate 17thC house with very helpful owners. A special place with character, and midweek offseason you can sometimes get it at a special rate. We had the attic room under the eaves of the house, overlooking the canal. Kettle, tea, coffee, minibar, immaculate shower room. It is 15 minutes walk from the station, but they can arrange a shuttle if you request it. There are two steep spiral staircases - not a problem unless you can't do stairs at all, in which case ask for a ground floor room. There is a cosy small restaurant five minutes walk away - ask the owner.
Review 7:The breakfast could have a higher variety.
Review 8:Cute boutique hotel in a beautiful city! The rooms even a bit small, are nicelly decorated and have everything you need.
Review 9:Not really suitable for business trip, wi-fi signal is weak, light is not very strong neither. Ironing facilities and toiletries are low quality. The sink in bathroom is very small. The staff didn't read my 'don't disturb' sign on the door, so they have entered and re-arranged the room including my personal things, thinking that I was asking for cleaning instead. There is no reception, but a bell where you call the owner.
Review 10:It is an authentic Dutch house, with lot of history and it was interesting to stay there. It is suitable for couples, I think, and for those coming to relax and enjoy. The bed is large and comfortable. Bathroom is modern and spacious. There are only several rooms so it has kind of private atmosphere. Mine (number 3) was on two narrow floors, with separate exit to lovely balcony-garden. SPA room is nice as well.
Review 11:Coming from the highway (A4) there was a lot of traffic through City in order to get to the Hotel
Review 12:Charming location, close to City center and restaurants. Very friend and helpful staff. Nice old historic building
Review 13:The staff was helpful in every way , friendly and courteous. Alex makes delicious pancakes and sets out a bountiful breakfast, Toby came to the rescue of one of our wedding party who was staying at the Baroness and needed our bottle of ibuprofen. A very nice woman carried our luggage up to the loft- no small feat. And the Huys van Leyden's taxi to the airport was the final crowning touch to our lovely stay.
Review 14:Rooms. obviously vary. Ours (no 2) was at the back and compact. It was well appointed but not spacious. The Hotel is more like an upmarket B&B. So note, no lounge, bar or reception.
Review 15:very good breakfast in lovely room overlooking the canal
Review 16:Staff was very helpful and kind. Accommodations very comfortable,, roomy, relaxing and very clean. Quiet street overlooking canal but close to everything. Totally satisfied and would return.
Review 17:We stayed in the loft - a few doors down from the main hotel. It had a lot of character and was very clean and comfortable. The manager and staff were very pleasant. They also offer a taxi service to the station and back which is a great help. Within walking distance to all the sights.
Review 18:The staff is not professional and not always available. The lavatory of the room was not what expected for a boutique hotel. Had many problems with the hotel, but the staff just conctated me later on not to leave a bad review of the hotel! Absolutely rude!
Review 19:Perfect base for a family staying a few days to explore Leiden and nearby dutch towns (Den Hag & Delft). Very authentic Dutch accommodation with all the facilities you needed. The hosts were very helpful and welcoming and went above and beyond what we would have expected. It does involve climbing some very steep stairs which might not suit everyone but all our bags were carried up for us and was fine for our family.
Review 20:the personalized attention of the staff ... there is a lovely in-room coffee maker, but when i asked if there was milk (fully prepared/expecting to buy some if there was not), Lea assured me she would provide it ... and, when we returned, there was a little jug of milk in the fridge! :-) ... the bed/shower/room were all comfortable and clean ... a perfect spot for going to the university
Review 21:There really wasn't much we didn't like. The wifi is pretty skittish but we were out exploring most days. If you're bringing you car, booking a parking spot is essential as there's little provision on the street.
Review 22:The hotel is in a beautiful location and is only a 10min walk from the station which has easy access to The Hague and Amsterdam. The loft that we stayed in was well appointed and had very comfortable beds.
Review 23:Our 3rd time at the hotel. I really like the cool, friendly style in which it's run, the beautiful rooms and the great location. All that and secure parking.
Review 24:NOTHING.
Review 25:ROOM FINISHES, LOCATION AND BREAKFAST ROOM. SECURE PRIVATE PARKING. IT WAS QUIET DESPITE US HAVING THE GROUND FLOOR ROOM NEXT TO THE FRONT DOOR.
Review 26:Excellent location and a very well kept, characterful building. The staff were very helpful and knowledgeable. Breakfast was lovely too! Highly recommended.
Review 27:Absolutely nothing to complain about!
Review 28:We stayed in Room 3 with shower room / sitting area on ground floor, bedroom / access to terrace on first floor. Good hot breakfast menu / buffet. Welcoming, friendly owner and staff. Garage parking.
Review 29:Wedding couple crashing over the threshold in the early hours, in no fit state for the nuptials.
Review 30:Trip to Keukenhof for the tulips was fantastic with the bonus of Van Gogh celebrations. Lovely walks, boat trip round Leiden, visiting museums and bars.
Review 31:Brilliant place to stay for accessing all attractions and in a lovely setting. The hotel is a short walk to the train station and a very short walk to cafes and restaurants. The staff are brilliant, breakfast awesome, Jacuzzi very relaxing.
Review 32:breakfast should be included
Review 33:staff were great lovely room, next time get the room with the bed overlooking the canal...I think it"s room #4 lovely town, eat Thai at Suri Thai on Doezastraat 11
Review 34:the staff were excellent and went out of their way to meet our needs. The room was comfortable and quiet. This was a good home base to cycle to Keukenhof and to wander around this beautiful canal and university town.
Review 35:Very minor point for me was WiFi was a bit patchy in the loft room and the shower needed a bit of careful adjustment but was great then.
Review 36:It was great to stay in such a historic house, which was warm and comfortable - good compact self-catering facilities in the loft room, although we ate at La Diva (exceptional). This rounded off a great few days in the Netherlands with another interesting and comfortable place to stay coupled with a friendly, helpful and warm welcome and service throughout. This is a great base for Keukenhof and the town is attractive and interesting in its own right - many of the attractions accept the Museum card which we purchased for Amsterdam.
Review 37:The distance from the central station and the jacuzsi not working
Review 38:The room was very nice, had direct access to the terrace and was a duplex. The finish was brilliant
Review 39:the wifi signal was a bit hard to connect to. and one day when i finally thought i'd have time for a dip in the wellness jacuzzi, i went in to find it shuttered and closed half an hour before the posted closing time, and couldn't figure out how to turn it back on and use it ( i presume because some master switch was already turned off somewhere. )
Review 40:very convenient location, luxurious accommodation and great service, friendly staff, and nice historical feel.
Review 41:This is a boutique style hotel with character. The room and bed are comfortable, the staff are helpful & friendly, the breakfast is good. The location scenic, central and quiet. Thankfully I have another option in Leiden now besides the modern sterilised koops!
Review 42:The only negative was the water temp changing occasionally in the shower, if showering at peak times.
Review 43:Everything, but mostly the extremely Dutch feel, cleanliness, the excellent knowledge of the staff and the location.
Review 44:Forgot to clean the bathroom for 2nd night stay
Review 45:Good service. People are easy adn make you feel at home without overdoing. Very nice building and room. Additional early breakfast service.
Review 46:Absolutely nothing
Review 47:Fabulous old house on the singl...with original features and furniture but with a modern twist ..wonderful staff...and great breakfast ....we just loved it...
Review 48:The very steep staircase in our bedroom, with the bathroom down stairs and our bedroom upstairs! However, with much care, I did manage as I get up a few times during the night. And as a previous guest mentioned, our door to room 3 had a rattle during the night, and we needed to put a pillow and a bag against it to stop the noise. All it needs to fix it is a draught strip I would imagine!
Review 49:Very well situated, gorgeous rooms, delicious breakfasts, wonderful staff! So nice to come home to, great facilities within the room, coffee and tea making, small microwave, small sitting area, really lovely attention to detail.
Review 50:We stayed in the Loft, the three-room top-floor apartment in the annex, and really enjoyed having the extra space, view of the canal, and kitchen (with washing machine and Nespresso machine). The bedroom overlooks the back garden and is quiet at night with nice breezes. We took breakfast every day at the main hotel -- space is lovely, very well decorated, and the food is delicious. The staff was very kind and helpful, very professional. Highly recommended.
Review 51:The fact that we weren't staying longer!!
Review 52:We had a one night stop over in Leiden and stayed at the wonderful small hotel. 16th century building with huge amounts of character - lovely bedroom with great amenities. Staff couldn't have been nicer, very helpful and super breakfast. Well located for city centre - book garage if you are travelling by car as parking nearby is problematic. Of if only all hotels were like this!!
Review 53:Very superior accommodation. The staff couldn't have been more pleasant and helpful -they even agreed to come in half an hour early to cook our breakfast before we caught an early train home. Thoroughly recommend the hotel, and a great city too.
Review 54:I have no complaints!
Review 55:Located an easy walk from the station and right on a canal, the hotel was well situated. It was also lovely, and my room was charming. The bed was even more comfortable than my own, and the breakfast was delicious! I particularly recommend the Dutch pancakes, which I thought were better than the one I had in a top-rated pancake house in Amsterdam. The staff was kind and helpful, and readily available in spite of the fact that it is a small hotel without a 24-hour front desk, as you would find at a larger one. If I am ever in Leiden again, I will definitely stay here!
Review 56:The Wi-Fi was free (which is good, albeit expected for a 4 star hotel), but the reception of both networks on the top floor was terrible. It was impossible to do any work online or to research/plan visits around the city using online information.
Review 57:The room (and hotel overall) was very clean and quite pretty. The location along the canal was great, and the possibility to park in the garage was appreciated. The bed and bedding were very luxurious, and the shower was nice and enjoyable.
Review 58:There are some limitations inherent in the size and style of the establishment. You obviously don't get all the facilities available from a large international hotel chain. For the business traveller, a bigger desk at which to work would have been a bonus. Also, my room was on the ground floor next to the door and right on the canal-side thoroughfare, and it could be a bit noisy with passing footfall until 11pm or later. But in the end it is a question of priorities. You won't get the authentic Dutch experience from the Ibis or the Holiday Inn. Personally, I would make the same choice again.
Review 59:This is a small boutique hotel, with very nicely furnished rooms and authentic Dutch ambience. It overlooks a canal, and is only about 10 mins walk from the heart of the city. Staff were very friendly and accommodating. I only ate breakfast there - which was cooked to order, fresh, tasty and reasonably priced.
Review 60:I have no complaints at all, other than the fact that the room was up two flights of narrow steep steps. This could prove a problem for travelers with mobility issues. We received assistance in getting our bags up to our room and this made the stairs a non-issue.
Review 61:The suite we stayed in was very spacious and the staff was very helpful in helping us with our luggage and getting us settled in. We were provided safe and secure parking. The breakfast was excellent with eggs cooked to order. The town is very pretty and the hotel faces a canal.
Review 62:steep spiral stairs may not suit if you are older or have aches and pains
Review 63:couldn't have chosen a better place to stay suited our family perfectly all together but with our own space breakfast was excellent
Review 64:The house was gorgeous, traditional and peaceful, set on the canal, with a lovely sunny and tranquil terrace at the back. a bit of a walk from the trains, but worth it, hosts were helpful and friendly. surrounding and house were beautiful, nothing to fault.
Review 65:Nothing, had a short but great stay
Review 66:Great shower, induction cooking (superquick), space, comfortable bed, option to watch television in separate room, location, friendliness of staff
Review 67:Wi-fi in room at top of house wasn't great - signal didn't seem to reach all the way up the stairs!
Review 68:Fantastic location, beautiful rooms, lovely breakfast, helpful, friendly people.
Review 69:No soap dispenser in room 2 had to use the shower soap dispenser.
Review 70:Very good location ability to have secure parking. Possibility to book excursions. Friendly staff. Lots of character to the hotel.
Review 71:We did not had chance to use the spa as it was closed.
Review 72:Nice Location and lovely rooms. Large choice of tea and coffee availbale in the room. We even had a big terrasse but unfortunately did not stay that long to use it. Staff is very nice as well.
Review 73:We stayed in the attic which gave us a feel for how Dutch canal side houses are constructed internally. It was lovely to sit in the living room and look out on the canal. The breakfast in the hotel was delicious. We really appreciated the use of the nearby garage for our car and bike. Thank you for the warm welcome.

Review 89:fantastic and helpful staff. Good size room
Review 90:Nothing
Review 91:Evocative location and character of the room with roof beams and decor
