Reviews for Hotel The Rose

Review 1:We asked for a early check-in twice by mail (we had a weeding that afternoon), they replied my mail only two minutes before to arrive to the hotel saying that "it is maybe possible"... we arrived to the hotel and nobody was there, it was raining dogs and cats. We called them and they told us that it was imposible to leave (at least!) our bags and do the check-in and ask in the bars or pubs around... Fortunately we found a nice place next to (the pannekoekenhuis) to do it. We cannot complain about the room, it was clean and confortable (the television didn't work...), but the shower curtain was full of mould (disgusting!) and we found an used shampoo there!...

Review 2:Amazing view from our bedroom to the canal and to the street (Gagelwater), next to it there is this amazing place Pannenkoekenhuis De Schaapsbel that left us leave the baggage for a few hours (read what didn't you like). The bed was confortable, and the check- out is at 12:00.

Review 3:The heating was not working properly so we found it a bit cold. The stairs to the 2nd floor were quite steep and the ceiling in the attic room a bit low (I bumped my head a few times).

Review 4:Good location with plenty of restaurants nearby. The member of staff we dealt with very pleasant and helpful.

Review 5:The entrance and hallway had a really strange smell. Maybe mold or mildew. After check in, I never saw anyone working at reception and was therefore unable to ask about wifi (the password info they gave me at check in did not work) or to store my luggage after check out.

Review 6:The location was good. Central and in a nice/interesting area.

Review 7:Could be cleaner, some fittings were broken, it was not clear how to check-in as the reception was being refurbished, no extras (tea/coffee, iron) and WIFI did not work.

Review 8:Location and late check-out.

Review 9:I specified that it was a business trip when I booked. I had no WiFi in my room - which was unfortunate as I had to go elsewhere to work during the weekend visit.

Review 10:The hotel told me that I booked wrong days though the mistake was theirs, I paid extra amount to stay the at the requested days. The wifi is not very good, the shower water was too hot and not able to control while the heating of the room was not very good. You can stay for 1-2 days, but more will be difficult.

Review 11:Its very close to the Leiden train station and the main bus stops.

Review 12:The room didn't look like the pictures. It was very small and not well furnished. The shower was very dirty and the bathroom very very small. I would never come back. No breakfast

Review 13:The location is great.

Review 14:The room and whole hotel smells bad and damp. The shower does not drain and tiles are lifting. So you showers with feet in disgusting water lifting mould fom base and drain and it floods the room after a short shower. It is a pity as the room decor was very nice but you don't want to spend time there due to smell and it feels unhealthy. Windows do not open.

Review 15:Great location with easy acess, short walk or one stop bus ride to train station. Friendly staff helped me with my luggage up the stairs.

Review 16:There was a kettle but no tea, coffee or cups. This doesn't bother me particularly as there are plenty of places for coffee and breakfast in the area - but I would just take the kettle out!

Review 17:Excellent value for money. Very friendly and helpful at check-in. Central location. Simple, basic rooms but just what you need, with a touch of Continental chic.

Review 18:The bathroom was not clean: mould in the shower and adjacent room, the tooth cleaning beaker was full with old stinky dried stuff, the waste basket was rosty, toilet seat was not fixed. When we tried to reach the hotel management to complain there was no response (we tried via mail, via SMS and via phone almost 20 times as there was no working reception). The only time we have seen anybody was at the arrival to hand out keys and request the room charge immediately. The bar downstairs was closed (so even if you wanted to have breakfast no chance to get it, the in-room available tea and coffee were not refilled and the cups were dirty). The internet was not available, TV did not get signal and there was no hairdrier as announced. We did get every second day fresh towels and bed made.

Review 19:The only positive thing to mention is the location, very central although this has the drawback that you need to find a public parking lot if you are visiting by car and have to pay for it every day if you can locate one at all!

Review 20:Room smelt like sewerage, WiFi didn't work, couldn't get hold of any staff and when basic things like an iron were requested, these requests were ignored. Stay anywhere else but here!

Review 21:Booking.com gave us the option of having two separate beds in a double room, but that is apparently not an option. We didn't find this out until we showed up at the hotel. My coworker ended up finding another hotel as one bed was our only choice.

Review 22:My room was very clean with a beautiful view. Great location as well! The hotel was quiet so I was able to rest peacefully. I only met the staff once, but he was very helpful.

Review 23:Mold in the bathroom? Broken windows in the entrance? The 'hotel' looking like it is a warehouse? ..don't know where to start. Not recommended at all.

Review 24:The location is excellent.

Review 25:The location was fantastic, central but easy walking distance to the train. The staff were really helpful and called to check when we would be arriving earlier in the day.

Review 26:My room was not properly cleaned (dirty cups and water bottle left) The TV was in a language I didn't even recognise so I could not update/answer/edit whatever the pop-up box was asking me and therefor I couldn't watch TV. WiFi didn't work. Very noisy outside. Not well maintained

Review 27:The fact that it is so central

Review 28:It was not a actual hotel, just a room above a bar, very central but nothing only a room also next door to another small cafe/bar which people were smoking all the time. Bathroom was cleaned everyday a towels changed. Okay just to put your head down.

Review 29:it was a good central point, make sure you read check in time, as we arrived on a Sunday and it was late.

Review 30:the check in was really messy: it looks like there is nobody at the hotel and you need to check in at a bar nearby it did not feel safe internet does not work

Review 31:great position it was clean

Review 32:- It is not a hotel. It is a cafe, opening at random hours, with 6 rooms on top. - The "reception" is the bar, operating 14/15-22, which means that there is not someone there if something happens. - No room attendance at all, during my 5 night stay. If I run out of toilet paper and could not contact the bar staff (was there for work), I had to go and buy myself. - Room in a bad state, dirty windows, kettle facilities and toilet, wall skirts full of dust. - Room noisy from the street and bars around even with window closed. - Internet was not working the first day, so bar staff gave me the private wifi access for the bar. Not good connection. - For the quality, the price is outrageous. - The "hotel" website does advertise it as a hotel, which is obviously not and the welcome notes folder in the room suggests that the "reception" is open 7 am to 11 pm, which is not the case at all. - This listing should not be advertised as a hotel. Not recommended at all!

Review 33:- Except location, pretty much nothing.

Review 34:There was no receptionist...the hotel seemed deserted until a shady-looking guy came over after a few minutes and opened up the hotel to give us our key. The quarters were cramped and the bed uncomfortable. No rugs on the floor. The sound on the TV didn't work until my husband had to fiddle with it. There was supposed to be wifi but it never worked.

Review 35:Location was fine.

Review 36:The wifi did not work and I was not aware there was breakfast offered.

Review 37:Nice clean room and bathroom. Roomy closet. Comfortable chairs and bed. Great location.

Review 38:not too clean, had to ask for toliet paper, had to ask for a lamp (light bulb got dead) the room looked better on the photo than in reality.

Review 39:good location, helpful receptionist girl

Review 40:room was smelly, bathroom needs repairs, very dusty curtains, unable to open window, some air came in through broken pane in window

Review 41:Location, bed; O K for budget stay Friendly receptionists

Review 42:Bathroom ceiling was mouldy, and the bathroom smelled pretty bad. No reading lamp by the bed. No power sockets in useful places.

Review 43:Great location and bed; very friendly staff.

Review 44:Bathroom handle fell off so we couldn't close the door all weeknd. Towel rack fell off wall. Ran out of TP with no one to ask because this is NOT a hotel.

Review 45:When we arrive the bartender was very nice in checking us in, however this is NOT a hotel.. Usually I don't leave reviews on booking but this is worth the time. The bed was comfortable and the location was awesome. The bars below were not loud and we were barely in the room anyway.

Review 46:The wifi could be a lot better and more outlets would be nice.

Review 47:This was a great hotel for a great price. While it is above a bar and it's hard to see the entrance at first, we didn't have any problems with noise. The location is right in the centre of town and less than a ten minute walk to the train station. Our room was nice and spacious, the bed was decently comfortable and the shower was very good. Good price for the location and much better value compared to other Dutch cities.

Review 48:The check in was at the bar below so it was a little hard to find at first. also limited check in hours. The front door is right above a sewer so your first smell impression isn't very good. I smelled that smell in my room sometimes from the bathroom.

Review 49:I loved the location, and the room was clean and comfortable with a nice view of the plaza. Close enough to train station to walk. Affordable.

Review 50:Room not ready when we arrived at 7.30pm, took 20 minutes to sort. Room was in ok condition, but the door had fallen off the wardrobe and was lent against it, bathroom VERY small, shower temperature floated from cold to hot. The bar down stairs where you check in had a awful smell to it. Overall the place is ok but not great value for money.

Review 51:Great location, short walk from train station, right in the heart of the city. Bedroom and bathroom were clean.

Review 52:No on site manager, no towels, no WIFI despite advertising as such, no heating at first. Very disappointed ...felt like we were just stuck in the attic without any care

Review 53:The location

Review 54:Utterly noisy (Pub over the road with live music until late, next room) No access control at all, door remains open most of the day. Small bed, not suitable for two. Broken wardrobe, door leaning on the side. No housekeeping whatsoever. Tiniest bathroom, door not fully opening due to roof beam (not romantic though)

Review 55:Location (close to rail station and city centre)

Review 56:Some of the people in the bar (below the hotel) looked a little scary - but didnt cause any trouble

Review 57:It was small, authentic, and in the centre of the old town - only 5 mins from the Station.

Review 58:These rooms are just bedrooms above a bar. It's not a hotel. I attempted to contact the staff by email and phone on numerous occasions prior to arrival. I had no response. Although things were pretty relaxed and staff were nice enough once open.....this is really just a bunch of rooms with a hostel feel.

Review 59:Location, Bed and easy check out. The accommodation is any easy find from the central train station. There is no formal check out procedure no busy reception to negotiate.

Review 60:Bad smell from the toilet, shower drain was blocked. I had to quit shower otherwise the water would flood the room.

Review 61:A good location, close to the central station

Review 62:Staying 2 nights, the room was not cleaned at all after the first night. Some dirty surprises behind curtain or under bed... :)

Review 63:Location and bar in the hotel are ok. Old buildind so some troubles here and there are acceptable....

Review 64:- Freezing cold (impossible to heat up the room) - Very noisy : the first floor is a bar/club and other bars are closeby !!! I had to suffer the sound of the club/clubs during the whole night - The lack of a proper reception/lobby (it is not possible to leave your luggage when arrive prior to 3 pm). Basically, the reception is at the bar of the club...

Review 65:- Clean room - Geographical position (between the central station and the city center of Leiden)

Review 66:A little hard to find as there is no sign. But we found it so it can't be that hard.

Review 67:Great location in the centre of Leiden. Our room was quite big and suitable for the price. Inconspicuous hotel above a pub so easy to get beer.

Review 68:The bathroom didn't have a window, so there was a smell of dump in there.

Review 69:The location was great, right in the middle of the historic centre and within a few minutes walking distance from the train station.

Review 70:No air con...so had to have the windows open as very warm...and the bars are nearby and noisy on a Friday/Saturday night...otherwise fantastic :)

Review 71:Near the station..the shops...and the bars and restaurants...also the canal was right outside...and our room had the most wonderful views

Review 72:Stayed during Leidens ontzet festivities. DJ in the hotel till 06.00 very noisy. Partying people in the hotel corridor. No breakfast possibilities.

Review 73:Room decor okay, bed okay but synthetic sheets. Shower fine

Review 74:Basic, cramped mismatched furniture, over a tavern, Price was outrageous for the room, no telephone in the room, Family down the hall let their brats run screaming up and down the hall, wouldn't keep their door closed,

Review 75:Location at the Beestenmarkt

Review 76:The whole building only opened at 3pm, which meant that we had nowhere to leave our suitcase when we arrived in the morning. On Friday night, we were awoken by loud dance music from one of the nearby clubs, which we could hear clearly even with the windows closed. The room smelled of paint, and there was no hairdryer. We also thought the hotel was not very secure: the building is part hotel, part bar, and anyone could walk into the hotel part of the building during the opening hours. Overall, we thought this hotel was too expensive for what we got (we paid €75 a night).

Review 77:Great location, comfortable bed, clean room

Review 78:Brand new hotel and not signposted so was near to impossible to find - wandered into a bar to ask, and it happened to be the hotel above it. Found some women's underwear in the drawer in the bedroom, and the bathroom would be a challenge/hazard to anyone above 5 foot 8, or around 1m80. Smelled of paint, which could go into the 'good' column - just showed that it was brand new. Nobody was around in the morning during checkout, so they failed to give me the promised receipt for my stay - also had to leave luggage in the room so I could go out and have breakfast in Leiden, but couldn't check this was OK. Customer service only available during bar hours it seems.

Review 79:Loved the location on Beestenmarkt, and the bed was very comfortable. The room was a decent size, with tea/coffee making facilities which were great, but no milk! There is an Australian pub opposite, but I still slept very well despite a bit of noise.

Review 80:Was initially told on enquiring that the hotel had closed. From the outside this looked quite possible as there was no reception or obvious signage. The door to the hotel was just a stairway with a pub to the right which on first impression looked dark and not very welcoming. In fact we would possibly have cancelled our stay if we had been able. Our room was on the second floor with 2 flights of narrow winding stairs which although not a problem to us could have been to some. The door handle was loose on first entering the room but this was dealt with immediately by a very polite and friendly staff member. The shower light was not working and the shower spray would not stay in position. We couldn't inform anyone as it was late when we discovered this but we think this would have been resolved quickly and didn't really bother us as we were there just for a short while which is also why we didn't sleep well.

Review 81:The staff were friendly and the young lady who checked us in was very helpful and efficient. The room was clean, bright and well presented. The bed was comfortable. Tea and coffee making facility(except lacking milk) but had a small fridge. The view from the window was very nice and in easy walking distance of all main areas. Plenty of clean white towels and complimentary toiletries. We were stopping over as we had an early morning flight and the hotel was ideal for that as just a short distance from railway station. We wished we had longer there. For the grade of hotel the room was good.

Review 82:The most annoying thing is the closure of the hotel between 2 am and2 pm. Obviously, guests have a key for entering, however there is nostaff during the closure. I found the price (90 euro/night) abit too high.

Review 83:Essential, clean, comfortable bed, in a strategical position (betweenrailway station and city centre). The rooms are just above the bar wherethe reception is.

Review 84:There was no bedside light, only central light with switch by the door.

Review 85:Location; cleanliness; ease of access; no need to interact with staff; typical old building; double windows kept out noise when closed; lovely linens and comfortable bed; little fridge; receipt was in room on last day. I'd stay there again.

Review 86:I think that it would be great if wifi was more consistent.

Review 87:this hotel is located in the centre ,convenient to everything. It has very good quality bed and bed linen and it was great that a mini fridge and kettle was provided. There was a regular supply of towels and shampoo etc. and a high standard of cleanliness. Staff were helpfull and welcoming. The room was bright and well lit and had a beautiful canal view. The street noise did not enter the rooms. The shower was excellent.

Review 88:- It's very noisy at night. The cafes next and below our room kept us awake until 1.30 am. - On this warm summer day it got very warm in our room and as there is only one window that could be opened. So too hot too sleep. But we couldn't sleep because of the noise anyway. - The Wifi looses internet connection randomly. Re-inserting the network extender in the hallway fixes it, for a few moments. - The doorknob of the bathroom comes off... - The refrigerator buzzes... - The clock ticks loudly...

Review 89:- The location: it's very close to the city center. - The bed was quite comfortable.

Review 90:The hotel was difficult to find, as it had no name sign outside and was further from the staion than I expected. It was raining when we arrived and the hotel was not open to drop off our cases prior to the 3pm check-in time but staff appeared promptly when I telephoned. The room was not serviced on two days out of 8 and I had to go and ask for toilet paper on one day.

Review 91:Staff were very friendly despite not seeming to be a thriving business.

Review 92:A bit dirty, uncomfortable bed

Review 93:Friendly staff, price, location, view

Review 94:Could not leave bags at reception before check-in. Not open until 14:00 Bad smell in entrance and hallways.

Review 95:Location is convenient.

Review 96:Great location

Review 97:Very small sized room and bed. Little comfort on the room.

Review 98:Location is in the city centre of Leiden

Review 99:Dirty bathroom and broken shower.

Review 100:Location

Review 101:Wi-Fi is practically non-existent.

Review 102:Poor communication, no one there to check in I have to wait for more than an hour to get access to the hotel, through Booking.com

Review 103:Very loud music opposite until 1am. Very hot but no fan. Kettle and coffee/tea tray but no cups/glasses or coffee/tea. No drinking water.

Review 104:No wifioften no staff

Review 105:Romantiek ten tp

Review 106:No towels, no toilet paper, no shower gel. This is SPARTAAA!

Review 107:Good location

Review 108:We had very pleasant stylish room, nice vista on the river ...

Review 109:Breakfast is not included

Review 110:Central location close to cafes and train/bus station

Review 111:No opportunity for breakfast there.

Review 112:Room was OK, wash facilities a bit cramped.

Review 113:the room is very small and the the bathroom's sewer pipe is clogging.

Review 114:WiFi is fast

Review 115:no bed light, nothing to hang your towels on, no table, no nothing. No help whatsoever from the staff. And, the stairs are dangerous!

Review 116:the location

Review 117:Very small bathroom. The bathroom door could open only 40 degrees. Broken and tasteless furniture. Noisy neighborhood.

Review 118:Location is very good.

Review 119:The heating wasn't working in the room so I was given an other one where the bathroom was tiny.

Review 120:Location is great

Review 121:Wateroverflow from shower

Review 122:Great location, comfortable bed.

Review 123:Hotel is above a bar. The check-in is excually in the bar...

Review 124:Loud music all night. Impossible to get sleep.

Review 125:Central location

Review 126:Bathroom smaller than a phone box No wifi at all.

Review 127:noisy, as there is a bar on the ground floor, and music resonates until very late at night

Review 128:good location, excellent view, nice comfortable room

Review 129:The wifi wasn't always working and people from other room where quite loud.

Review 130:I loved the room, the location and the staff.

Review 131:intermittent wi-fi signal (I stayed in room five)

Review 132:clean and tidy, good bathroom facilities.

Review 133:Stairway is authentic Netherland, narrow, twisty - no elevator ofcourse. Entry is being "renovated", so business is conductedin a nearby bar. It got very noisy in the middle of one night. I thinkthe woman managing the place was either quitting or being fired. She wasnot seen again.

Review 134:This was less than I hoped for, but it probably met its own standards -one to two stars. Staff, if there is one were invisible and left mealone. Site is attractive, but activity can get hectic.

Review 135:I have read a few reviews complaining about the steep stairways leading up to the rooms. This a not a fault of this hotel, it is just a common feature in the buildings throughout Holland.

Review 136:We stayed here for two nights on the 10th and 11th September. The location of the hotel is fantastic with our room overlooking the busy and lively Beestenmaarkt. It provided an ideal base for exploring the City of Leiden. The room was on the top floor and we found it to be clean and comfortable. We were made to feel welcome from the moment we arrived and although the cafe/bar below was closed due to renovation works, the owners have a bar 2 doors away where the people are friendly and its open until late playing some great music. We had a great stay here and are looking forward to going back soon.

Review 137:Although this is a small hotel without anything fancy, the simple rooms were well-maintained and clean. The location on Beestenmarkt in downtown Leiden is excellent, of course, but the best part of this hotel is the people that run it. The owner, Josef, is very friendly and hospitable, and definitely helped to make my stay in Leiden a pleasant one.
