Reviews for De Doelen
Review 1:this room was a small double - great for one person, but would have been quite tight for a couple breakfast decent rather than excellent
Review 2:Room very good, with new bathroom, and tea & coffee which I haven't seen before at this hotel great location manager (the only person I saw) great to deal with magnificent building, especially the front rooms
Review 3:Wifi was very bad. Breakfast was not very exciting but good and reasonable.
Review 4:Service was outstanding, all people very nice and helpful. The hotel is simple, spacious and quiet; it feels safe and dependable. Very nice location.
Review 5:Excellent location in central Leiden. Beautiful old building, decor was updated at some point a few years ago so is perhaps slightly dated now, but no complaints from me - I found it charming, convenient and very helpfully staffed. For a personal holiday I'd much rather stay here than one of the international chains.
Review 6:Staffs were very friendly and helpful. Room was very neat and clean. Towels bedsheets and accessories were changed everyday. They ensured that you get all types of comfort during the stay.
Review 7:Another choice of a pillow would be helpful. There is room for improvement regarding the breakfast: proper freshly ground coffee?, fresh Dutch cheese? (e.g. gouda?), better bread? , and more.
Review 8:I stayed in the Suite room which was very spacious and comfortable with good storage facilities (comfortable bed, large bathroom).
Review 9:nothing
Review 10:Fantastic and quiet location in the centre of Leiden, lovely old building with modern rooms. The beds were the most comfortable I have ever slept on
Review 11:The room was lovely and the staff was very helpful. Someone helped me carry my bags to and from my room upon arrival and departure. I didn't try the breakfast (which cost extra), so I can't comment on that.
Review 12:Whirlpool (in a deluxe room) did not work for the entirety of my stay. The staff did not have the basic courtesy of apologizing for the inconvenience and did not offer any solution. From what I could tell, the members of the staff could not care less. They offered no reduction of any kind. It was the fourth or fifth time that I visited the hotel, but I won't consider going back.
Review 13:Originally given a very small uncomfortable room. Lots of noise from people above. Asked to be moved and was given a room on top floor which was much much bigger and nicer. Best to complain if not happy. Breakfast was extra, not wonderful, on reflection should have gone out for breakfast. Hotel quite a gloomy atmosphere and very dark.
Review 14:Hotel in good location on a canal. Staff were friendly and helpful sorting out problems. Room was spacious and bed comfortable. Moved to this room after complaining about our original room which was tiny.
Review 15:Small room and very cramped bathroom. Only one window with view on very messy area between buildings. No hairdryer provided.
Review 16:Friendly receptionist helped me get my luggage up the stairs on arrival. Breakfast (though not included in room price) was good. Easy wifi access.
Review 17:The stairs were a bit of a climb, but I need the exercise
Review 18:I liked the canal frontage, the air of faded grandeur, that it's unique, it's walking distance from the train station, and my room was huge.
Review 19:Paper walls! I got woken up at 7am by loud noise from neighbouring room (which probably was a shower). I could hear a pin drop in the other room. The tables in the breakfast room were not cleaned when I came and I have to wait ~ 5 minutes before someone paid any attention to me.
Review 20:Room was small, but clean and comforable, with a work desk. Good internet connection. Convenient quiet location. Nice, old fashioned Dutch building.
Review 21:Had to place kettle on floor as lead was short to reach a socket
Review 22:Staff were friendly and very helpful, giving places to eat , travel ideas, and printing tickets for Keukenhof Comfortable bed Breakfast had plenty of self service choice
Review 23:Would be very nice if the owners kept some bicycles available for guests to use or rent since everything in Leiden is by bicycle.
Review 24:Location is amazing right on a canal and very close to restaurants and shopping. Also only a 10 min walk to the train station. Staff was incredibly helpful and responsive. The room we had was huge, nothing fancy or modern, but very nice and clean with an old world feel. Highly recommend staying in this gorgeous little town instead of Amsterdam since it's only a 30 min train ride from the airport.
Review 25:The age and design of the building means it is unsuitable for visitors with mobility problems.
Review 26:This is a quiet, family-run hotel ideal for short visits. It is built in an old palazzo and retains many charming period features. There is no better location if you are visiting the university.
Review 27:I did not realise the Botanic Gardens close onMonday and idled Sunday afternoon over a long lunch and missed it.
Review 28:Location in ancient city centre with all things of interest nearby. First class restaurants with a variety of prices but invariably high quality food and service. No lift but lovely staff carried my bag up to my room and down again.
Review 29:The breakfast could be enriched with some more variety.
Review 30:Loved the premises, the history it is able to tell, the furniture and the simple but yet warm and friendly of the staff. It felt like home.
Review 31:no lift for our elderly companion. Although a change of room to the first floor was offered, the stairs were a problem for my mother-in-law.
Review 32:The location is excellent. Warm, clean and comfortable hotel with character.
Review 33:The inevitable downside of the period building was that there is no lift to the second floor.
Review 34:That the hotel retains its attractive period features, it was quiet and comfortable and the staff were friendly and relaxed.
Review 35:A bit worn, in need of some updates. The room was large and the bathroom was fine, but need some renovation. Has potential to be a high-end boutique hotel.
Review 36:Location is great, 10 minutes walk to Central Station, close to several good restaurants, historic center. Breakfast was good, and a great value. Staff was very friendly and helpful
Review 37:- the feather pillows (I'am slightly allergic, but next time I will ask them for another pillow. I'm sure it will be arranged
Review 38:- The coffee/tea maker in the rooms - a very good shower
Review 39:bed too soft. if you need to check out very early that could be a problem as they do not come in early.
Review 40:good sized room with small table and chairs, very quiet location but close to amenities, old building with squeaky floors but full of charm.
Review 41:Great location near to Webster University. The owners could not have been nicer. We had a parking ticket problem when we were visiting The Hague and he ended up writing an email on our behalf to clear things up, even scanning a copy of the ticket. Really a very nice guy! Very helpful!
Review 42:The location was wonderful. Within easy walking distance from the station and convenient for seeing the town on foot. Staff were informal but friendly. We had a ground floor room that looked out on a small garden and the bathroom was sparkling new with a jacuzzi bath!
Review 43:Not disliked, but this is an old style hotel with 1960s furniture so don't expect all mod cons.
Review 44:Central position, friendly staff, good value. Clean and comfortable if a little outdated.
Review 45:No restaurant in hotel, but there are lots of eating places locally (inc. a very good English Pub directly opposite). Slept OK, but bed a bit too soft for my liking.
Review 46:Friendly and helpful staff. Good continental breakfast. Very nice rooms. Easy 10-min walk from Leiden Central station.
Review 47:The room was a bit small and the lack of air conditioning was definitely a negative factor considering that the days and evenings were unusually warm. The brreakfast was very good compared to other breakfasts in hotels.
Review 48:The location was perfect.
Review 49:The smell. The bathroom was poor ( loo seat came loose ) . A parking permit should be provided. The place has potential...
Review 50:Excellent location for exploring old Leiden. Spacious rooms
Review 51:City centre location in a very student/pedestrian/cyclist-friendly city was wonderful, but noisy drunks could be heard intermittently every night - nothing too bad. No lift and steep stairs were no problem for me but could be for others. Shower temperature and pressure were just barely adequate.
Review 52:This is the antithesis of a modern chain hotel, the staff were friendly and helpful, and a bit disorganised. Everything is a bit old-world, both the service and the decor. It's quite a while since the last refurbishment but that was fine with me. Simple, value-for-money breakfast.
Review 53:Our stay was too short to actually suggest changes. I loved the breakfast and the fact that we could open the window - always gives a better sleep..
Review 54:Minor issue - Light in the room is not bright enough
Review 55:Room is small but nice and comfortable. People who work there are very helpful and friendly. And great location right in the center of Leiden
Review 56:I could have used a fan, but I understand that it is not usually so hot there.
Review 57:I was in Leiden for two weeks for a Summer Course at the International Tax Centre only a short walk away. The entire staff was always so welcoming and helpful. I could not have asked for a better place to stay in Leiden. I am sure I will go back there if I am ever in Leiden again.
Review 58:Specifically booked a double room and was put in a tiny single room. Told "there's nothing we can do about that" Internet was terrible Parking was about 800m away
Review 59:It is very central and close to all places fun. Great hosts.
Review 60:Room was rather small

Review 103:The beds are too soft!
Review 104:This is a hotel with charm, an older building oin a super location.

Review 112:Staff were very friendly and accommodating. Great location and lovely old world charm, whilst still being very comfortable.

Review 118:The top floor, as not fit enough!
Review 119:The owners were very helpful and nothing was too much trouble
Review 120:Room 8 and 9 very cramped. Rooms at the front looked much better. Parking / driving very difficult.
Review 121:Good location. Nice Historic building.
