Reviews for Van der Valk Hotel Leiden
Review 1:the hotel is not the charming building you see in the promo shot; standard room has no choice for double bed, you have to upgrade for extra money. very noisy from the outside of window and door because our room was almost a couple meters from the road.
Review 2:reasonably clean, good wi-fi, free parking
Review 3:As long smoking is forced to be outside I expect for ~100euros a night , some kind of shelter outside which is wind&rain shielded. Maybe also privacy is a key, aswell in that kind of shelter ... It is nice to see - that 'fietzes' are treated better than humans ... they got a shelter ...
Review 4:The location is really is really nice, the rooms are large. And the staff is really polite *thumbs up*
Review 5:No bad experience. Location isn't fantastic. It's very safe etc, but it's not close to anything. Nothing is within walking distance, so for any other outings or restaurants you need to go to Leiden Centraal.
Review 6:The room was good. Very comfy and the balcony was nice. Restaurant was very good. Staff very friendly.
Review 7:The room was very clean, big restroom both provide shower and bath, huge bath plenty of room with jacuzzi, the bed is really comfortable, locker, beautiful view, quiet, gym facility for work out
Review 8:The elevator did not work.
Review 9:The beds were very comfortable. The staff was friendly and helped us with recommendations and information about the city. Our room was big enough for 4 people!
Review 10:Shower door noisy when opening, gap entering the shower a little small, plus there is a step. Could do with more functional lighting over the dressing table / desk area. For some the location may be inconvenient as it is not in the central position but there is a service which you can get to take you to Leiden which is a short drive away.
Review 11:Loved having a small but private balcony which allows you to sit and have a coffee/read the paper. Outside terrace by the canal is excellent to take the time to stop and stare.Excellent beds which are very comfortable. Friendly / professional staff, good choice of breakfast to suit all tastes, very good restaurant. Attractive decor throughout the hotel and good size rooms. Shower and a bath facility. Can get some good deals so value good. Location wise, I don't mind being away from a central position.
Review 12:They do not have Baby Crib. If you have a baby it will be problem to keep it in the bed.
Review 13:Hotel has good location near Amsterdam Airport. Before you leave the country you can have a rest in this hotel. It is so quite and green location. Staff are educated and helpful.
Review 14:Departure front desk counter staff happy to overlook us for other customers after they may not have realised they inadvertantly dressed us down. My wife and I will improve our dress standard. Collar in future!
Review 15:First impression was that of a well run tidy operation. Very clean and excellent room. We tried to book a second night but were booked out. No surprises there though. Nice late night meal at the restaurant. Arrival front desk counter staff member excellent. Very helpful. Management material in the making if not already!
Review 16:Wanted to charge for breakfast that we had already paid cash for. Little coordination between restaurant and reception. Problems like this can be avoided by breakfast being included in the price.
Review 17:Sander Blok the front office manager was extremely accommodating and helpful during our stay and made sure we had good accommodations when we decided we wanted to stay another night and the hotel was fully booked. He made sure we would be happy with our stay. Thank you Mr. Blok!
Review 18:The hotel was clean and quality of the room was of a high standard. The staff were friendly and spoke English. I particularly liked the whirlpool bath.
Review 19:The expensive breakfast is rather ordinary. Unfortunately there didn't seem to be any other choices nearby. Laundry prices are unaffordable.
Review 20:Wi-Fi was the best on our trip. Restaurant food was great. Staff wonderful. Very comfortable 3-night stay. Free hotel shuttle to rail station (limited schedule). Used the jacuzzi bathtub for a sore leg.9
Review 21:Tried to charge me for breakfast I didn't have and I payed cash for the room but charged me by card as well Found some of the restaurant staff to be very rude
Review 22:Nice hotel and good location
Review 23:personally bed too soft for me to sleep but excellent quality. missed minibar and fact that main bar was closed early
Review 24:Staff excellent, good service. Definateky value for money
Review 25:Couldn't get the treadmill to work in the fitness room but as the hotel is near a lake I was able to find plenty of outdoor pleasant running.
Review 26:Room and bathroom were very clean. Bed was lovely and comfortable. Toiletries were provided and air conditioning was good. Large simple to use safe in wardrobe. Lovely restaurant and outdoor seating area. good location and staff were efficient and friendly
Review 27:The carpet looked terrible ... really dirty or stained, so I kept my shoes on. Overall, the room could use some updating. A free breakfast would have been nice. This is true of many European hotels, but a sheet separate from the duvet would be nice. Who want so sleep under a hot duvet in the middle of the summer. We took sheet off the duvet, but that was a hassle.
Review 28:The hotel served our needs and was in a good location to explore the area by car. It was a straight shot (by car) to main Leiden parking. We liked that the room has 2 large beds and plenty of room for my wife and me and 2 daughters. We liked that it had a fridge and small patio (albeit overlooking a road). It also has a coffee maker. Overall, the hotel served our needs, and had a good benefit to cost ratio.
Review 29:It's a bit out of the town but the number 48 bus is regular and cheap.
Review 30:Very nice beds, shame only two singles and not a double for a couple. Quiet location, good bike hire facilities.
Review 31:The room smells bad, location is far from the centet for about 35 minutes walking. Air conditioning is not that cold thanks god that the weather was nice.
Review 32:I liked the parking, the position of the hotel is just above the river. The suite was nice and big plus the balcony was great to stay in after a long day or even in the morning. I guess i will come back to this hotel.
Review 33:Not a negative, but prospective travelers to the VdV should know that the hotel is not the charming building you see in the promo shot (which is the restaurant and other facilities), but rather is an adjacent modern nondescript building. All fine, but you should know. And it is a bit of a distance to central older Leiden via ugly and not walker-friendly roads. The hotel offers a free shuttle at certain hours M-F, not when we were there. But overall an excellent value and great staff.
Review 34:As stated by many previous reviews, well maintained and clean facilities and a very helpful staff. The restaurant by the canal is a great place to sit on a sunny day watching the boat traffic pass by.
Review 35:Nothing
Review 36:The outside terrace to the restaurant. Lovely to watch the boats go by while enjoying a nice meal. The food at lunch time and evening was very good.
Review 37:Location is far from the city - €15 taxi ride. The hotel shuttle bus only operates first thing in the morning and between 17.00-18.00. While the restaurant and reception are in the old building on the canal, the bedrooms are in a modern motel style block - overlooking a carpark or highway. Not what it seems on the website! The hotel takes an unreasonably strict attitude to check out time - on the day I was leaving I was first disturbed at 9am by a member of staff calling to tell me I had to check out by 11, then at 11am reception called up to tell me I had to leave now. Three minutes later, another member of staff knocked on my door to tell me to leave right away. Free internet is limited to 2 hours.
Review 38:Breakfast on the terrace overlooking canal Lovely interior
Review 39:Bare in mind this hotel is a little out of town. It is walkable but there isn't a foot path all the way. (we had to walk on cycle paths) Took us about 30 mins to walk to the station. With baggage it is easier to get the bus, No 43 goes every half an hour. The hotel also offer a free shuttle bus on week days but this only goes early morning and end of the afternoon.
Review 40:Nice terrace on the river.
Review 41:The staff were attentive and courteous at all times. We could no fault this hotel. We also liked the bar meals in the evening. Thank you for adding to the enjoyment to our holiday.
Review 42:Communication is a disaster internal and with booking.com. Luckily Icalled or I did not have a room. The same thing for the dinner Ibooked, the restaurant did not know about it. And Read the text betterthan I did !! Underground rooms for 190 euro is to much. Btw they arevery unfriendly at the desk. And I did not complain openly until Ichecked out.
Review 43:The location ( restaurant) is perfect. The beds are good. Wifi is free2hours a day and fast. Place to put your boat.
Review 44:Lack of swimming pool and more variety of food, not much choice from the restaurant menus
Review 45:Location of the hotel quite good , not far from Keukenhof. Pleasant atmosphere . Helpful staff .
Review 46:Extra charge that was prompty removed when I contacted them.
Review 47:Great rooms, very large and clean and huge baths. Dinner in bar was great as was service. Lovely stay.
Review 48:Nothing important. Mind however that you may need a car to reach the center of Leiden (or a bike).
Review 49:Quiet, comfortable, clean, very good breakfast. Fantastic location.
Review 50:Pure wi-fi in room. 40min walk from city center. But there's publicpublic transport.
Review 51:Room design and cimfort is good enaugh. Very nice and quiet place.
Review 52:Extra long bed and bath for tall clients. Very clean and comfortable rooms. Great restaurant with wide menu choice. Restful location on canal, relaxing terrace, helpful staff.
Review 53:The hotel itself is a nice building, a lot of space in the room, very comfortable bed and nice and kind staff. Well connected to the highway and also the main railway station
Review 54:This hotel was very far from the centre of town and there wasn't much around it. It was not feasible to go into town for dinner and there were no restaurants around so we had to eat at the hotel restaurant.
Review 55:This was a nice hotel with clean and comfortable rooms
Review 56:None
Review 57:Nice large, comfortable room. Staff very helpful and friendly . Good position for what we wanted. Both the restaurant and snack bar produced very good meals. Look forward to going again!
Review 58:We had to cancel our booking due to an emergency but re-booked after the matter became manageable. In that regard we stayed 2 out of the 3 nights and was charged a one night cancelation. We explained to the manager what had happened, he seemed not convinced. I would imagine being in a hospitality industry, he could at least offered some sort of a voucher to be used with our next stay or perhaps a breakfast voucher. I understand they have their hotel policies at the same time, one cannot disregard a genuine emergency. We were also not impressed with the food served at the restaurant.
Review 59:All the rooms face the road and there was some noise from passing traffic.
Review 60:Nice location by the canal. Good restaurant with great food. Separate cosy bar. Friendly, helpful staff.
Review 61:You always have the impression to be welcome guests and not guests tolerated! Clean hotels, spacious rooms, good beds, friendly staff, and good quality, no nonsense, food makes us always enjoy a visit.
Review 62:Lighting in the rooms I found a little dim, need a bit more functional lighting as opposed to quite a lot of mood lighting. Could do with a mirror over the dressing table area and functional lighting there. Would benefit from a magnifying mirror in the bathroom.
Review 63:Excellent breakfast selection, good value for those who like a hearty breakfast. Good food in the restaurant. Enjoyed having a coffee relaxing by the waterway on previous visits. Spacious, clean, modern, warm, comfortable rooms each with french doors leading to individual balconies.
Review 64:The passage to the rooms from the lobby is not close by and hence handling the luggage wasnt easy. Getting a taxi was also not easy. I had book a taxi 15-20 min in advance to leave from the hotel.
Review 65:The hotel is a little way from the centre of Leiden but there is a bus stop right outside and buses every half hour so it isn't a problem.
Review 66:I have stayed here a number of times for business and chose to return for a leisure weekend with my husband. Very friendly and comfortable hotel with pleasant rooms. Most rooms have a balcony so although we are smokers we could still enjoy our stay.
Review 67:The hotel is quite far from the city centre and the use of public transport a necessity. There is, however, a bus stop right next to the hotel and a bus that goes directly to the main train station. One-way tickets are relatively pricey at EUR 4, but I bought a public transport card, and the price dropped to under EUR 2.
Review 68:Although the original purpose of my trip was business, I spent a few days in Leiden to visit this and surrounding towns. I was quite impressed with the Van der Valk hotel. Check-in was quick and effortless. I was a little early and my room was still being prepared, but the hotel has a nice restaurant with a pretty few of the canal where I had lunch. Having a quiet room was particularly important to me and in this regard the hotel did not disappoint. The spa-whirlpool bath in the bathroom was an unexpected, but delightful surprise. Breakfast was typical for a four star and the price was reasonable (although not cheap). The room was quite large which made it perfect for business trips. An empty bar fridge was provided.
Review 69:The rooms and bathrooms are spacious and clean. The area is almost out of the town, but easy to access by bus (43) until 00:30. The staff is helpful and client dedicated. An unpleasant incident produced soon after my arrival was resolved in a minute.
Review 70:I used the phone for a 20 minute conversation with a friend in Den Haag(15 minute drive away) and the hotel charged me almost the price ofanother night's stay. Do not use the phone in the room.
Review 71:Luxurious, comfortable, clean, easy access to the North-South highwaybetween Den Haag and Amsterdam (Schiphol airport)
Review 72:A chanelside hotel located 3 km away from city center . Dinner and breakfast both were delicious. Rooms are new, clean good smell. Bathroom is clean and hygenic. Perfect to stay
Review 73:Walking to the back in order to enter also having to load luggage thrulobby when there's a door leading to stairs towards the rooms.
Review 74:Room with a balcony. Clean and comfortable. Receptionists were courteousand helpful. Breakfast was good but a bit over priced.
Review 75:1- The reception staff she was rude and not helpful. My friend asked for a room next to mine and she told him that i live above his room that wasn't correct we were in the same floor and the room next to mine was vacant. 2- Poor WiFi connection in all areas. 3- Sleepers were for sale you have to pay 2.50 Euros???? Really? 4- The cleaning staff left the balcony dirty. 5- I don't recommend this hotel to any one. You can find other alternatives like holiday inn or Ibis it's much more better than this hotel and close to the Centrum of Leiden.
Review 76:Leiden weather.
Review 77:no breakfast, and if you do want one, it's insanely expensive. Needless to say we went somewhere else to get breakfast :)
Review 78:The room is very good and clean (Africa Suite) and has excellent facilities! Quiet location, slightly off the main city center and very good to have a quiet night sleep. Leiden itself is also a very nice city, quite relaxing unlike the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam.
Review 79:Wi Fi was hard to access in the room and the service we received in the restaurant on the evening was very slow. The bathroom in our room was clean but could do with being updated, especially since everything else had been.
Review 80:The hotel looked as though it had been recently refurbished, our room was lovely as was the dinning room. The food was really good, especially enjoyed the breakfast which included a bottle of champagne that you could help yourself to!
Review 81:Nothing, all good.
Review 82:Everything - staff were very helpful and friendly and as we checked out before the restaurant opened, our breakfast/ lunchbags were huge! Thank you.
Review 83:Can't think of anything!
Review 84:Lovely room, excellent staff, very clean and tidy. The room looked like the photos online and that's the first time I've seen this - all rooms looked like luxury suites so very pleased. The children loved it, Granny loved it, we loved it - all the family were impressed :-) Thanks!
Review 85:Breakfast not included. No one to help you with the luggage. Other than that everything was very good.
Review 86:Location. Size of the room. Free Wi Fi. Friendly staff. Easy check in and check out. Air conditioning.
Review 87:It is a quiet yet welcoming hotel with friendly, helpful staff. A wonderful, canal side location and just minutes by bus out of Central Leiden. We will certainly stay there again.
Review 88:Breakfast was not included in the room price, as in other hotels we stayed at during our visit in Amsterdam. The cost of the breakfast was a bit pricey, so we didn't have it. However, we did have a late lunch, sitting along the canal, which was very picturesque.
Review 89:very convenient for day trips into Delt, The Hague and the city center. The decor in our large blacony room was modern, with mini-fridge and separate shower. We were lucky to be on the court-yard side with view of the small garden. Free parking and computer in hallway was also very convenient.
Review 90:The air conditioning in the room wasn't very strong.
Review 91:The hotel is an easy drive from Amsterdam, parking is easy and plentiful, and everything was clean and well maintained. The triple room was large and comfortable. Hotel staff was helpful and courteous. Wifi was strong and fast.
Review 92:Bath towels were very small. Breakfast at €13.50 each was a bit pricey for what you got.
Review 93:Really nice triple room, comfortable beds and nice bathroom. Rooms are nice and modern and a nice contrast with the original historical building. Nice canal side terrace. Would definitely go back next time we visit the family.
Review 94:Beautiful hotel. Very comfortable beds. Food excellent.

Review 107:Comfortable room and wonderful breakfast buffet
Review 108:The hotel was right up to standard for Dutch hotels. Very clean and excellent staff. Great food and grey rooms.
Review 109:Perfect family room. Nice furniture and even a whirlpool in the bathroom. Enough space for 2 adultes and 2 kids for a reasonable price.
