Reviews for La Casa del Abuelo Ollantaytambo

Review 1:Not centrally located, its just outside the historic city. It's a few blocks from restaurants and the square. But that's why you get a new building with new plumbing, etc. They apermit smoking in the courtyard. All the doors open to the courtyard. I had to shoo smokers away from my door. It worked out. They stopped doing it. And I think this is more a cultural thing that could happen at any hotel.

Review 2:This may be the only newly built hotel in this historic town, but it has a lot of character and it is in a cool location across from a river with a view of the ruins. You get a new bathrooms and furnishings and finishes and plumbing. My husband and I are always trying to find the right balance between local character (important to me) and modern amenities/clean rooms (important to my husband). This may be the best option for that in this small, historic (to put it mildly) town.

Review 3:The only issue we faced was that the wifi was very slow. Not sure whether it was just in the hotel or all over ollantaytambo.

Review 4:We stayed for 1 night and had an extremely pleasant stay. Catty is a lovely host and she took very good care of us, gave us an early check-in too. The room was very clean and the breakfast was wholesome and delicious. Loved our stay here!

Review 5:For payment, only cash. I was little bit worried that I didn't have enough cash in my wallet.

Review 6:Amazing staff. It is very nice and simple hostel. Reservation and check-in were super easy. Great location. I had great times stay at this hostel.

Review 7:Very helpful in every which way. Ka (the receptionist) went out of her way to make arrangements for us. They also held on to our luggage on the day we were not staying in the hotel.

Review 8:Smelly toilets. The sink has just cold water (I hate shaving with cold water). Noisy room; prepare for early wakeup due to noises from the street (small alley, but people and cows pass by at 6am).

Review 9:God location, just off the Inca ruins. Storage is available for your luggage while you travel to Machu Picchu.

Review 10:The room was very clean. I especially appreciated the clean bathroom and shower. The staff were kind and the owner was warm and welcoming. The location is great as it's right outside the historic site (there's even a view of it from our top floor room). The breakfast was very delicious and much better than other places that we stayed at.

Review 11:Henry was most accommodating and friendly. Used his driver, David for service to Ollanta and back again from Cusco. Provided us with take away breakfast since we were on first train AM. Wonderful village to explore.

Review 12:The Hotel I initially booked was the Casa De Abuelo. After I had bookedthey sent me and email stating that due to construction it would not beavailable during my stay and I would be at their other hostel Casa DeAbuelo Riverside. Room was cold, never above 65 and no heat so in theroom I had to wear long pants and a sweatshirt to be warm They have twoHotels in the town. The one which is listed on the Booking.com site isthe one right next to the town center and very convenient. The one whichthey put me in is about three blocks uphill from the town center- notbad, but not as convenient.

Review 13:The Hotel is clean and and presents well, room was plenty large fortwo, the staff are very friendly and help full, it is next to a riverwhich you can hear and gives the hotel room a nice ambiance, the Wi fiworks well, no tv - a plus for me. The complimentary Breakfast ishealthy and nutritious, eggs, bread, fruit, coffee and juice. I would stayhere again but would prefer their other location.

Review 14:The bed is a little small for two people, so if you are sharing with friends I would recommend you book separate twin bed rooms.

Review 15:Overall a nice stay and the staff were very friendly. We stayed at their new location Casa de Abuelo Riverside, not the one that is right in the center of the town. Overall very clean and welcoming!

Review 16:Very helpful owner and volunteer travellers staffing the hotel. Great location, lovely tiny balcony so we could leave the door open at night and look out at the mountains. Free drinking water

Review 17:The owner and host was wonderful! So full of knowledge and happy to help with anything. She gave us a few tips I places to eat where to buy gifts and things to do in the area.

Review 18:Best staff, best breakfast. Extremely clean. This hotel would cost me $150 in Canada. Can't believe the rooms face the Incan ruins and the sounds of a wild river!

Review 19:Wifi was inconsistent. Best access is in the sitting room, but not in other parts of the hotel.

Review 20:Location was in a quiet location, and close to the plaza without being right on the plaza. When we were stuck in Ollantaytambo for 2 extra nights because of a strike in the area the staff/owner was very accomodating and helpful with our arrangements. Great stopover on the way to Machu Picchu.

Review 21:No heat or TV.

Review 22:Beautiful, clean, great staff, fantastic value for the money. Next to the river and three blocks to the town square. Good breakfast. Beautiful flowers.

Review 23:We had no running water on the first night, but were too exhausted to go looking. Bottled water in that climate would be appreciated. As would having tea and coffee making facilities on hand. Pillows were small and rock hard and made for an awful nights sleep despite exhaustion. WiFi strength wasn't sufficient, but that isn't a deal breaker in my mind. I suspect for the same money you could find greater comfort.

Review 24:Location, staff especially young backpackers were friendly, breakfast is sufficient, packed lunch if you leave for Machu Picchu was appreciated. Inexpensive, clean and attractive hotel.

Review 25:I went horse riding on a very calm horse however the stirrups were very small and i had to jam my feet into them which made me feel uncomfortable if I had to make a quick exit out of the stirrups. If I did it again I would make sure that I wore slim shoes not my walking boots.

Review 26:It has a lovely energy, Henry the manager is very helpful. The view of the mountains were lovely. Wifi was good with the occasional black out overall it was good and I would come back and stay.

Review 27:There was a power outage at the hotel, but seemingly not in the rest of town from when we arrived to within an hour of departure. This may have been an issue with the section of town.

Review 28:The location is just far enough from the town centre to be quiet, amd the staff were courteous and friendly. The room was clean and charmingly decorated, and quite comfortable.

Review 29:Bathroom was smelly and way too small. Hardly any usuable space. Room was full of small bugs. It was nice that they gave us packed breakfast but it was truly terrible.

Review 30:Friendly staff.

Review 31:All good, was perfect.

Review 32:Lovely room. Clean and nicely presented. Staff friendly and most speak English. Great coffee at breakfast. Supper location for ruins and getting to the train station.

Review 33:This isn't a luxury hotel, but it's a great value for anyone wanting to see the Sacred Valley without paying luxury prices.

Review 34:Excellent, personal service. Superb breakfast every morning.

Review 35:There were no heaters available. We did have our down mummy bags which made sleeping comfortable, but getting up in the morning was painfully cold.

Review 36:Staff was very helpful

Review 37:You need to like hard beds.

Review 38:Upgraded to hotel near the river, with plenty of places nearby to eat out.Tea available all day. Excellent location to catch train or bus to get you to Machu Picchu.

Review 39:Great people, very kind and helpful, even held our bags for us when we went to Machu Picchu. Good location, quiet and convenient. Next to the ruin entrance, marketplace and the awesome Choco Museum. Easy 10 min walk from the train station. Clean and comfortable room, hot water etc. WiFi can be horrendous, but that's a problem in the entire town.

Review 40:It was brand new, a thoughtful layout, very friendly, helpful staff and it felt like home. Breakfast was excellent,, they arranged safe rides for us and it's been our favourite place so far! I highly recommend this place.

Review 41:I loved everything about this place

Review 42:- Unstable internet connection. Even the restaurants in the town are supposedly wifi, which eventually you find out is not the truth, but a trap to attract customers. I was offline for two days. - No TV in the room. After all, no TV, no internet connection, not even a radio. - I had been told they would prepare a lunch box for breakfast the day I went to Machu Picchu, but the personnel responsible for preparing our boxes was told only one couple would go out early in the morning, so no breakfast for us. We had breakfast at the station, which cost us an arm and a leg. :(

Review 43:- Clean comfy rooms. - Good breakfast. - I had made a reservation for Casa del Abuelo, but I was redirected to Casa del Abuelo Riverside. At first, I was told I had been upgraded. The property was brand new and the location was perfect in terms of quietness. However, the internet connection which was supposed to be good was actually very unstable.

Review 44:The original location was a bit loud, and the riverside location was quieter but our room was covered in smashed bugs. Wifi worked well in the lobby but not in the rooms. I'm not sure it was worth the cost, but it made for a good home base in Ollantaytambo.

Review 45:The staff was REALLY great, but they seemed transient so you can't really base your decision on that.

Review 46:it was extremely overpriced for the facilities it offered. the room and bathroom were tiny, no toiletries, only one small towel and one big one for two people in a room, the breakfast items bare minimum, you could only pay cash, etc...

Review 47:the atmosphere and the staff were nice. location also good and let us store our luggage until our departure

Review 48:WiFi signal is not stable. They changed the other location without notice giving us surprise. But , the new location is quiet and 5 more mins walk

Review 49:The staff is helpful and nice

Review 50:"Arranging a tour" means they'll hook you up with a cab driver to take you various places, it is not an actual tour with description, history, etc. I was told my driver spoke English, which essn't really true. It was hard to communicate or ask for additional info. It was ok, just know what to expect. The town is very active, if noise bothers you, bring earplugs. The bar next door plays loud music.

Review 51:Excellent location just steps from the ruins and a couple blocks from the plaza. Staff was friendly and some spoke English. Internet and breakfast was good.

Review 52:We were "upgraded" to a new building. It had only been open two weeks. It was great and the location was much quieter than the original would have been. It faced the giant ruins and was close to the main square, restaurants, etc.

Review 53:Very friendly and helpful staff, clean and close to Ollantaytambo main attractions. Great breakfast, not a buffet but more than enough and fresh fruits / juices

Review 54:The bar next to the hostel is very noisy.

Review 55:The hotel is very nice and the stuff is very kind. They prepared us packed breakfast because we went to Machu Picchu. I liked the hotel and would stay again there.

Review 56:The hotel was recently opened and very confortable and decorated with good taste. Small details in the room showed good taste of the hosts. Mr. Ronald, manager, was most helpful and did his best for the guests' confort. The very early breakfast was delicious and served so beautifully. Do not miss the old town with its narrow streets just behind the hotel!

Review 57:We stayed at the brand new Riverside property. The staff was excellent. We stayed there an unprecedented 9 nights due to a change in plans. Everyone was wonderful. The breakfasts of eggs and pan were great. The cook did a great job. Overall, a great stay.

Review 58:- location, away from the main road where all busses go through (we stayed at the new hotel Casa del abuelo Riverside). - helpful and very friendly staff - view to the ruins

Review 59:dark walk to town center, wifi very poor, bed was ok, but not the best. room very basic.

Review 60:there are two hotels with the same name, they put us in the new one just opened: a short walk from the town center, by the riverside. this means it's very quiet & newly refurbished. the staff was incredibly helpful, even at 4am when we got up to take the train to MP. room was clean. good deal for the money.

Review 61:The fact that they locked the front doors when front desk was not attended. It wasn't until we were checking out, that we were to find out there was a doorbell to ring so that the cleaners could let us in.

Review 62:Great location. Breakfast was much better than expected.

Review 63:The staff was very friendly and always attempt to help in every way to make our needs meet. There was a French couple staying at the hotel and working too and they were super kind. The owner was there too and she knew we needed to leave the next morning to a trip to Cuzco and there she was at 4:30 am waiting for us with 2 bags full of treats for breakfast on the way. It was the best proof they care about their guests. Thank you all for the great stay.

Review 64:We stayed at the sister location of La Casa del Abuela Riverside. This hotel was wonderful. It was close to town but out of the hustle bustle. The staff was very nice and helpful. The place was spotless and the breakfast good.

Review 65:Rooms are very simple and the bathroom small. And our opinion is that it is a lkttle bit to expensive.

Review 66:Staff and owner was friendly. The Hostal is in the city nearby to the inkaruins and quiet. The beds are very comfortable.

Review 67:A space heater in the room would have been nice.

Review 68:Room chilly but bed cozy and warm. Nice breakfast and very friendly and helpful staff. Very close to archeological site, restaurants, train station and artisan market.

Review 69:With the price of progress comes construction. There is a construction project directly across the street but it did not infringe on our enjoyment of the property.

Review 70:The staff and location are exactly what you need when visiting Ollantaytambo. The room was cozy and comfortable and the breakfast was just perfect. Exceptional value for the piece!

Review 71:This small hotel is for a one night visit to Ollantaytambo. There is no TV nor sitting room especially since the rooms are very tiny. I slipped in the shower stall so wear sandals. In general there is no ambiance.

Review 72:The shower water was hot at any hour. The receptionist personnel are trilingual including French. The breakfast was healthy for the most part.

Review 73:What's important to remember is to pay your hotel bill in U.S. Dollars. If you chose to pay in Peruvian Soles, then the owner will use an unfavourable exchange rate(for ex. the Internet rate to charge you more in Soles).

Review 74:The hostel was well located near the local Inca Ruins and in proximity to the train station where most people take the train to Machu Pichu.

Review 75:- The staff is super nice. He allowed me to use his PC for paying the hotel. The restaurant he recommended is super good. He went together with me to look for my friend and withdraw money. - The coffee sold there was awesome! Nice location, quiet. - Room is clean and comfortable and cozy. Love it.

Review 76:While we were staying there was building work going on directly opposite the hotel, but this didn't disturb us in the evening.

Review 77:Great breakfast, one of the best during our stay in Peru.

Review 78:The only complaint I had was that the heaters could have been more efficient !

Review 79:I loved the friendly staff and the sweet women that served us breakfast every morning!! Great room with nice hot showers and comfy beds. Super clean and well kept. Great gardens to relax in to prepare for your hikes!!

Review 80:Wifi was horrendous and virtually non-existent. Breakfast was all right.

Review 81:The owners were really friendly and hospitable even though I checked in late. The place takes a little effort to locate as the street isn't listed on Google Maps. Thanks to friendly locals they showed me to the casa! The price was most attractive though.

Review 82:Noise from the next door restaurant could be heard from our room.

Review 83:Owners are a very nice couple. Nice breakfast and they will pack a small bag breakfast if you take an early train to Machu Picchu.

Review 84:Noisy. They were literally pouring a cement floor outside our window until very late at night. Nothing the staff could do about it. Should be a lot quieter now unless they're building a skyscraper!

Review 85:Breakfast was highlight of stay. Fresh fruit, made to order eggs and cappuchinos

Review 86:The owners make this hostel thee place to stay in Ollantaytambo. We felt like family. They sent us to some of the out-of-way places in this small town we would not have looked for ourselves.

Review 87:It was a bit noise especially by the entrance as there is a restaurant where the music is loud. The staff were great and moved me for the next night. It's on a corner so you hear foot traffic also just so you know. Screaming children early in the morning not my favorite to wake to

Review 88:It was close to everything, the staff were very helpful and breakfast was excellent.

Review 89:No heating in room. Was very cold in July, espencially with tile floor. But warm in bed. Would have been good to have TV in room. Wifi was too slow to do anything.

Review 90:Friendly staff, good location. Excellent breakfast with proper coffee machine for cappucinos and hot chocolate for kids.

Review 91:The staff was friendly and made our stay comfortable and enjoyable. The accommodations felt authentic/Peruvian and were very comfortable. Ollantaytambo is an adorable little town. The altitude was much better for me here than in Cusco - so stay a little longer to do yourself a favor. We actually extended our stay by a day. My son loved the hot chocolate that Abuelo made for him! :) Thanks!! ~ Lori + Galen (17)

Review 92:The hotel owners were very kind & helpful. The shower was hot & the bed was comfortable. Breakfast was wonderful! Very basic, but sweet place!

Review 93:Nice place. So I stayed one more night just to relax. Quite. Warm nice shower and extremely clean. Great location good people and a sweet little niña in the lobby:)

Review 94:My room was on the top floor. The windows were tiny which was a shame as otherwise the view would have been amazing. The views on the second floor rooms were far nicer but I was unable to change rooms unfortunately. The wifi was very weak. I also noted the price I paid online was more than the tariff list at the hotel.

Review 95:Lovely staff make this property desirable. They are always keen to help in any way, and were great in making suggestions for walks around ollantytmbo.

Review 96:The internet speed was very slow. We were told about this at check in.

Review 97:The staff was friendly and helpful. The location was very convenient to the Peru Rail Station and the ruins. The bed was very comfortable.

Review 98:Nothing to dislike!

Review 99:Very friendly couple, who provide very comfortable lodgings close to all amenities. It's a short walk to the Plaza, Ollantaytambo Ruins and train station. We had an excellent breakfast when we were there, and a packed breakfast when we had an early start.

Review 100:Bed was a tad bit stiff.

Review 101:The family that owns this hotel take great pride in their business. I felt like part of their family staying there. This is one of the best places to stay in Ollanta. I highly recommend it. I will be back.

Review 102:Wi-fi was fairly poor strength-wise and cleanliness was so-so (super dusty wooden shelves).

Review 103:We had a great view from the window at the front of the building. Bed was comfortable and free breakfast was a bonus.

Review 104:We went to Machu Picchu and they kept our bags even though we were coming back to a different hotel afterwards. The staff was very helpful and we had a few long conversations with them about our trip. The room was nice. The shower was pretty good.

Review 105:Poor sleep as closed windows still let in noises from alley below. Room was clean but could definitely use updates in bedding Breakfast was fine but basic compared to others we had on trip.

Review 106:Just around the corner from all the shops and restaurants. Friendliness of staff

Review 107:Henri and Kathy are warm and caring hosts. They organised our pick up and return to the airport. We stayed 2 nights and left our cases while on an overnight to Machu Picchu. The train station is a 10 minute walk. The room is simple but impeccably clean, very comfy bed and hot shower. The breakfast was the best we had in South America and Henri makes a great coffee. Mickaela their little 2 year old is an added bonus!

Review 108:no TV, but I did not need it much and the WIFI...hit or miss.

Review 109:THE STAFF! Owners, Kathy and Enrique (and Michaela) were very nice. The Breakfast, fresh fruit, juice, cappuchino, eggs, the room was great, bed comfortable, hot shower

Review 110:The internet is very spotty but that is not the fault of La Casa. We are situated in a remote valley and it was challenging at times to get online.

Review 111:The staff (including the two Australian volunteers) were very friendly and helpful. They did their best to make our stay enjoyable. The breakfast was very good and we felt it was ideally located in Ollantaytambo.

Review 112:We had a great experience here. The staff and owners were wonderful and helped us with anything we needed, including giving us advice, arranging things for us, and making us feel comfortable and at home. The location is excellent! We also loved the 24-hour hot water after tours, the delicious breakfast, and we really appreciated the details they put into everything. We received fresh towels every day that were beautifully folded into shapes. We really enjoyed our stay here.

Review 113:This simple inn is just what you need as a staging place on the way to and from the train to Machu Picchu. A wonderful surprise is the immediately adjacent Inca ruin. The family cares for you, and provides very pleasant rooms and breakfast.

Review 114:Very friendly owners, Henry and Kathy. My room was on the top floor with the view of the Ollantaytamo ruins... very nice! The breakfast was great with a fantastic hot chocolate made by Henry. Will stay there again with the family.

Review 115:Hubby sorely missed the TV

Review 116:The staff was incredibly helpful. Let us store our bags on the way to MauchuPicchu with no hassle and made our short stay in Ollantaytambo comfortable and memorable

Review 117:Please, a few hooks in the rooms for hanging clothes.

Review 118:Australian staff who were very helpful. The location was good. Enjoyable breakfast in a social setting or a packed breakfast for early departures.

Review 119:No TV and limited view from the room.

Review 120:Very kind and welcoming people - owner Henry & Kathy, staff Fernando especially ! Satisfied with spacious room and delicious breakfast. Pls ask them to prepare meal pack if you leave early for Machu Picchu.

Review 121:The staff was excellent and very helpful. The breakfast was very good, especially the fresh fruit which we hadn't had in some time. The room was small but very tidy and the shower had plenty of hot water. Wi-fi was a little spotty but let's face it, we didn't come to peru for the wi-fi. Would definitely stay here again.

Review 122:Even if my room at the third floor was just beside the gas water heater wich is noisy.

Review 123:My single room was small, but so nice. It look like it is a new hotel, and many little things make it nicer. The service, the owners, the breakfast, the cleaness make it one of my best stays in Peru.

Review 124:The Casa del Abuelo was the perfect place to stay for two couples traveling together on our way to, and, a day later, back from Machu Picchu. The host family is fabulous, their "inn" is clean and comfortable, and the location is great--steps to a major Inca site and the town, and a 10 minute walk or a quick moto-taxi ride to the train. This place is an exceptional value. We loved it!
