City Hotel Nieuw Minerva

City Hotel Nieuw Minerva descritpion
The City Hotel Nieuw Minerva is in the historic center of Leiden between the two most important shopping streets. You will find plenty of restaurants and cafes around the hotel for a drink or bite during your stay.
The hotel is along one of Leiden's many canals. This makes it easily accessible by boat. The hotel spans 6 authentic 16th century canal houses. In 1830, one of these houses was inhabited by J.R. Thorbecke, the father of the Dutch constitution.
From the rooms on the front side, guests can enjoy views of the old Rhine.
The City Hotel Nieuw Minerva is decorated in a friendly, Old-Dutch style with a cozy atmosphere. It offers a good restaurant and meeting and banquet facilities.
The hotels rooms are decorated in various styles. Some rooms are romantic, some classic, some in Art Deco style, and a beautiful bridal suite is available as well.

Reviews for City Hotel Nieuw Minerva
Review 1:Room is very basic: Small room, small toilets, very small closet, no fridge, no kettle, old small TV, very few channels in English. For a short stay it is OK. For a longer stay I would look for hotel with a bit more comfort in the room.
Review 2:Excellent location right in the middle of Leiden. Staff very kind and polite. Wi-Fi good. The view to the canal is nice (but not all rooms have this view).
Review 3:Even though you would not want to compromise the historical building, having lift of some kind would be most helpful, even if it for luggage only. Those steps were difficult to climb with luggage behind.
Review 4:The charm of the hotel was lovely. It is in a great location in Leiden.
Review 5:We stayed two nights and both nights we were disturbed by noisy people outside the hotel in the early hours. The lock on our room door was faulty when we arrived so we could not lock the door. This was replaced the next day.
Review 6:Perfect location. Courtesy bus to car park was very efficient. Good choice for breakfast.
Review 7:1.It is very poorly insulated, could hear everyone talking outside just under my window, so didn't sleep well. 2. It is extremely poorly ventilated, if at all. Every time I went up or down the stairs there was a bad stuffy smell. 3. The breakfast is not what you would expect for the price, the variety and quality of food is quite low.
Review 8:1. The location was perfect for me, only 10 minutes walk from the university. 2. The staff was helpful and friendly.
Review 9:Difficult to get WiFi in the room Lots of stairs. No view
Review 10:Location was fantastic. Staff were extremely helpful and friendly. I loved the decor in the restaurant. Breakfast was great and good value
Review 11:First room (single bed) was small and stuffy, changed room to a double that was better
Review 12:Location is excellent, staff very freindly, bathrooms are recently renovated and nice.
Review 13:Our room was very small and hot. Also being at the front, we had a nice view, but the street was noisy both at night and in the morning.
Review 14:The hotel is in a convenient location. The receptionist was very helpful, and the staff were friendly. It was a typical Dutch hotel.
Review 15:A little noisy on main canal street but not too much. Breakfast was nothing special, not worth the price.
Review 16:Took room upgrade on 2 rooms - got Rose Room and Bridal Suite (same price but Bridal Suite was huge). interesting decor!
Review 17:The only real downside was that a double bed was booked however what was provided was 2 singles pushed together including single mattresses and although very comfortable in their own right ceased to be comfortable since they parted on a frequent basis.
Review 18:Hotel is in a great location within easy walking of everywhere in Leiden. The room was clean and spacious and very comfortable. I look forward to returning to the same hotel and location.
Review 19:A bit of street noise late at night. The room was small, almost completely taken up by the bed. The closet was very small. The WiFi was erratic.
Review 20:The bed was comfortable, the view of the canal is nice, the bathroom was very functional, and the staff are very friendly and helpful. The room was nicely decorated. Very historic feeling in these restored old buildings.
Review 21:I was disappointed by the breakfast quality. However, gave me an excuse to try some of the lovely dutch bakeries instead.
Review 22:I loved the location as it is close to Leiden Central Station and the city centre. It is also situated by a lovely canal.
Review 23:Tired hotel in need of care and attention. My double room was tiny - you didn't need more than the five hangers provided as the 'wardrobe' was then full. No drawers. Half the lights didn't work. Decor very sad and dark. Ok overnight but not for a week, and definitely not for two people. No lift, and nothing on the website to say so. No advance warning that I was arriving during the annual marathon and a ten-minute walk from the station took one hour over temporary bridges with a large suitcase. Don't rely on the website photographs!
Review 24:Location. Pleasant staff. Nothing else.
Review 25:Rooms are quite small. It was quite noisy at night at the front from the bar round the corner.
Review 26:Traditional old style hotel. Very friendly helpful staff. Right in the centre of Leiden.
Review 27:Students were partying late the first night we were there. We closed the outside window the next two nights and heard no other noise.
Review 28:Easy access to the City. Had its own character and style.
Review 29:small room for a double, sufficient for a single user. noisy surroundings (new building construction close by), small bathroom. This hotel has nice rooms: the one assigned this time was poor. Breakfast is barely sufficient.
Review 30:location, atmosphere in the lobby
Review 31:Our room was basic, but very clean. Smallest TV I have ever seen, took me back to the 70s! (but this was not a problem for us). Super friendly people. They are currently renovating some of the rooms.
Review 32:No major gripes, the rooms are a little dated in terms of decor, but were still clean and comfortable so not a big issue for us.
Review 33:Great location in the centre near lots of nice places to eat and drink. The staff at the hotel were very welcoming and very helpful. It is only a 10/15min walk from the train & bus station too.
Review 34:The only thing may be not really convenient stairs if you have a baby strolley. But still manageble.
Review 35:Great location, just 10 minutes walking with a child from Leiden Central Station, very cozy room, helping personnel - it was the best choice we could have made. Beds are very comfortable, room cleaned every day, available food/drinks in a bar downstairs.
Review 36:* Walls are quite thin * Funny stagnant water smell in the corridors, because of construction works in parts of the hotel * River side rooms are nice, but be prepared for a chorus of seagulls in the morning
Review 37:* Location is great. A great base for exploring Leiden on foot * Staff is very friendly * Rooms are clean, comfortable and convenient. * Water pressure is absolutely spectacular.
Review 38:Beds.
Review 39:First room we got had terrible beds, we had a very bad night of sleep. However, the staff was wonderful and upgraded us to a suite with a normal bed as soon as we complained.
Review 40:At present, there is some construction work going on next door to the hotel. However, it stops in the late afternoon.
Review 41:Comfortable, friendly hotel in central Leiden. Excellent radiator when the night gets cold.
Review 42:Easier access to tea and coffee would be nice.
Review 43:The staff was consistently friendly, helpful, available and knowledgeable. It is the least hotel-like hotel I've stayed in for years. My room was small, but still had enough space for everything.
Review 44:Bathroom was very cramped. TV was tiny. Phones in room didn't work - reception said it would take 30 mins to re-boot the system. Breakfast was limited in choice. Internet terminal in lobby didn't work.
Review 45:Location was very good - walking distance of train station and city centre. Bedroom was spacious, and looked out on to canal.
Review 46:Very bad value for money. Less than an average hostel standard for 100euro. I got a bed room wigh bunk beds, the two beds supposed to serve as double bed were in bad co ditions and 60 cm wide, bloods from smashed mosquitos all arpund the walls, bad lights. Hugly. Not recommemded at all, unless you are 4 and have found no places in a real hostel..
Review 47:Kind staff
Review 48:Parking scheme in Leiden is costly for visitors. Walking is easy or rent a bike if you like cycling.
Review 49:Located in the heart of Leiden with all this beautiful city has to offer in easy walking distance. Great selection of local restaurants. View the city from a boat to see it at its best.
Review 50:It was very warm and there was no air conditioning.
Review 51:Beautiful location ideal for our circumstances. So easy to get to with public transport. Fantastic place to cycle.
Review 52:It was a very hot and muggy weekend in Leiden, so we slept with the windows open. I wish the locals would go to bed a little earlier!
Review 53:It was a very easy walk from the station. The staff were lovely and helpful. The bed was very comfortable. The view from our room (No 1) was stunning.
Review 54:Staff very helpful.
Review 55:Location, friendly staff, safe storage of bicycles, comfortable room and bathroom
Review 56:Great location
Review 57:a bid noisy (better on the water front)
Review 58:Super location, nice staff.
Review 59:No lift - my suitcase was heavy...
Review 60:Room, bathroom, location
Review 61:Ideal location, character
Review 62:Pretty, quiet yet central location.
Review 63:Staff is great and bed is comfy
Review 64:Nothing
Review 65:Location, location location, Staff very friendly and helpful. On canal and close to tourist locations, restaurants and bars.
Review 66:Breakfast did not start until 7 Room had a lot of light in the morning
Review 67:Quiet, friendly. Did its job well
Review 68:Room bit small for two people
Review 69:Location, friendliness of staff
Review 70:Great location in a quaint historic building with friendly and helpful staff.
Review 71:Everything but I mostly liked how clean and comfortable it was. Whenever we'd walk into the room it smelled so nice
Review 72:The staff were great! The front desk staff in particular were very helpful in giving directions and highlighting things to do and see.
Review 73:This was a lovely hotel in an excellent location. I would happily stay here again and would recommend the hotel to others!
Review 74:The hotel is under renovation so you do not need an alarm if you want to get up at 7. 30 a.m.
Review 75:Friendly and helpful staff
Review 76:Cute decor!
Review 77:no liftbut only two stories high
Review 78:the room was incredibly cold. thin curtains, single pane glass on the windows. I will never stay there again.
Review 79:some of the staff were nice
Review 80:There is beauty and comfort. Polite staff, immaculate bedlinen, and the absolutely most confortable mattress I have ever had.
Review 81:Gracious staff. Breakfast. Location
Review 82:Not too many TV channels ))
Review 83:Everything was just great!
Review 84:the friendly excellent staff conveinent location nice room with wi It was a happy stay
Review 85:Walls a bit thin but fortunately neighbours were quiet, so turned out OK
Review 86:Great location, excellent bed, good shower, nice staff
Review 87:Our room had a wonderful view of the canal. The staff was helpful with directions, suggestions on activities and help with parking -- which in our case was just outside the front door!
Review 88:Friendly and knowledgeable staff. The location is fantastic for cafe breakfasts in the morning and all kinds of shopping and cuisines. It's an easy walk to the train station (maybe 10 minutes) and the road has little car traffic. Some of the rooms have access to a paved terrace which was fantastic since we were travelling with a dog and a toddler.
Review 89:Room was basic and was clean but not attractive no tea or coffee facilities was clean but not squeaky clean however bathroom was great and shower very hot.
Review 90:Central location nice view at the front not so good at the back excellent breakfast.
Review 91:Sometimes noisy at night, especially from drunk people in the street. Breakfast was not worth the price.
Review 92:Convenient location, friendly and helpful staff. Clean and cosy room, comfortable bed. Nice view.
Review 93:Beautiful traditional building in a perfect location. The first room we were offered was gloomy but the second overlooked the canal and was much nicer. Recommend book ahead and ask for 1st floor room facing the canal. The business operation appears much reduced from former times, now concentrating on accommodation, where previously it had been an active inn and restaurant. Some attractive interesting rooms on the ground floor appeared unused. Bedrooms could be updated and the traditional aspects of the hotel made more of. Nevertheless we had a very comfortable night and staff were helpful and friendly. Breakfast ok but not included. Overall more expensive than other places we stayed.
Review 94:Small room, dark room at back of hotel looking out onto other building Shabby cupboard in room Small bathroom Basic breakfast, eg no rolls
Review 95:Location Good bed Nice reception area Fexible with baggage storage after checkout
Review 96:Some areas of decoration were dated. We booked a double room but actually it was two singles pushed together which kept moving. No tea/coffee in room. Cant request a room with bath when paying on here.
Review 97:great location and nicely themed rooms. Downstairs areas were very beautiful. Staff helpful.
Review 98:Nothing!
Review 99:The staff was so friendly, I can't remember any hotel where they were so nice. The location is perfect, in the centre of Leiden, but a quiet neighborhood. Next time we're in Leiden, we'll definitely come back!
Review 100:Very friendly staff and upgraded to the 'Honeymoon suite' which was spectacular! By chance our visit coincided with the Relief of Leiden festival so the town was very crowded. Enjoyable however.
Review 101:more veggies on breakfasttable and should invest in a good coffee machine. alarm clock not showing correct time - small things that can be easily fixed
Review 102:feeling of hotel charming in the best sense - very friendly and helpful staff
Review 103:Booking.com described our room as 'Special Offer - Double Room individually decorated with a tv and private bathroom.' It was actually a dark tiny twin, poorly ventilated with a view of a fire escape. Not very special, we thought.
Review 104:Staff very friendly & helpful. Beautiful building & location.
Review 105:The internet connection was very bad in my room. For a business trip, this is rather inconvenient.
Review 106:The friendliness of the staff and the location of the hotel.
Review 107:The hotel has perfect location and very friendly staff. I had a nice, clean room overlooking the canal. My stay was was good value for money. I had googd internet connection in my room. I recommend this hotel.
Review 108:rooms need updating. furnishings very plain. upstairs halls a little tired looking. breakfast service was very disappointing, esp considering Euro 7 price per person.
Review 109:location very good. overlooking canal, but down the street from most nightlife and so quieter than other canal locations.
Review 110:Someone forgot to mention the nightclub downstairs from our room whichgot going around 11pm and didn't stop til 4am :(
Review 111:Really cool place in the centre of the city. Room was nice and big andreally well decorated. Nice modern bathrooms and great breakfast forreasonable price.
Review 112:Breakfast very basic, meets only dutch standards. Staircase very steep, dangerous with suitcases.
Review 113:Excellent location with nice view of the canals. Spacious room. Free wifi in reception area.
Review 114:Needed a good clean. linen was clean but ground floor very dusty and needed a good clean especially the floor. Bedroom carpet under beds was filthy.
Review 115:Location was good.
Review 116:Free WiFi in the lobby not in the room. The stairs are to steep, especially for elderly people with heavy luggage..
Review 117:The staffs are very friendly. and the location is in the central of the city.
Review 118:The light button is at the entrance only, not near the bed. For this price, a simple breakfast could be included.
Review 119:Simple, convenient location for this hotel. Small single room but with atmosphere.
Review 120:No wi if in bedrooms - just in foyer so not a big complaint by any meansas there is plenty of seating and it is quiet there.
Review 121:An excellent location within easy walking distance to everywhere inLeiden. A very relaxing and old fashioned foyer with plenty ofcomfortable seating. Good value breakfast and nobody rushes you out ofthe dining room.
Review 122:Room design was rather boring.
Review 123:I had good pillows, a rarity in hotels! The building was charming, a series of 16th century buildings. The location was excellent, city center, close to railway station. My room faced an inner court, so was very quiet. The downstairs lounge also served as cafe. I found that fun, though other people complained that it was a bit noisy.
Review 124:Old style wall mounted TV high up.
Review 125:Helpful & friendly staff. Preservation of old style flooring & furniture on ground floor, e.g., reception and simple but moden rooms upstairs. Location is ideal. Good value breakfast.
Review 126:Rooms are furnished with an eclectic collection of furniture; sometimes this adds to the historic atmosphere but mostly it just looks like some old stuff from grandma's.
Review 127:Rooms are really clean, bathrooms are simple but modern and well-equipped. Rooms have all you need and are homely. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is great. Location in the city centre is very convenient. Atmosphere is good and relaxed, although a bit oldfashioned due to the furnishing.
Review 128:Breakfast coffee is not good - from a machine and therefore tastes like something chemical. WiFi is not free. No lift.
Review 129:Old world decor which suits the whole ambience of Leiden very well. Cheap enough. Buffet style breakfast is OK. Small shop selling souvenirs by reception. Quiet (but then so is all of Leiden). Close to good restaurants, and only 10 mins walk from train station.
