Reviews for Mariënpoel Hotel Leiden
Review 1:It was announced to be a 4-stars hotel. Come on,this is a nice 3-stars hotel but not at all a 4-stars!:) I booked a double room but it was a single room with a queen bed: size just ok for one person, really too small for two
Review 2:Staff was extremely nice and helpful Breakfast in the room
Review 3:The breakfast was not a good value and I misunderstood it to be part of the nightly rate. At the end, I had a surprise charge that given the choice I would not have chose the breakfast provided.
Review 4:Location and the local feel; not a normal hotel.
Review 5:We were worried about the security as no staff stayed at the reception. The reception desk was closed afternoon and all night. We had no one to ask questions, and we wondered what to do if something bad happen to us, or at the hotel. The facility service was unstable. Sometime cups were cleaned, but sometimes not. Sometimes yogurt was included, but sometimes not. We asked two extra towels but only one time they were provided. Breakfast was simple. We expected more comparing to other hotels for similar price. Not recommended for foreign travelers who may need more help.
Review 6:Location in quiet nice residential area but still near the Central Station. Nice residential room and very quiet. We enjoyed home like stay.
Review 7:Problem with software resulted in the 3 rooms booked 2 months in advance were not available for us so my two colleagues had to share rooms. The owner was very Nice and accomodating, though, so we had a Nice stay!
Review 8:It is in a great central location, very comfortable, clean with very helpful staff. The breakfast was not what was expected and a lovely surprise. We would definitely recommend the Marienpoel Hotel to others.
Review 9:The breakfast was much too expensive and not very impressive. But this was not enough to keep us from loving our experience.
Review 10:We stayed in a four person suite and the room was the best room we have stayed in out of all of our travels in Europe. It was outstanding! The space was big, the beds were comfortable, there was a dining table and chairs inside our room but also a door that opened straight from our room into the patio. The one staff member we met was very kind and welcoming. We would recommend this to anyone.
Review 11:was told you could not bring outside food or drink into hotel. only hotel in trip we were told this.
Review 12:great location, 5 minutes form train station and 7 minutes from old Leiden
Review 13:We stayed in the spacious quadruple room. Perfect for a family. The hotel is situated right near the station and also to numerous bars, shops and restaurants. Very friendly welcome.
Review 14:I liked very much my stay at Mariënpoel Hotel. The room was very clean and comfortable with good internet. The hotel is in a nice and quiet aria, close to the train station and to the centre of the town. The breakfast was very good and I discovered the pleasure of having breakfast in the room without additional payment. The owner was friendly and helpful.
Review 15:bed was very small but other than that, room was great
Review 16:breakfast was fantastic and brought to room, room was huge and comfortable, flat screen tv and good internet
Review 17:did not order breakfast, but looks mostly prepacked. and the price was way too expensive for the standard
Review 18:neighborhood, cleanliness, elevator, spacious room, many power sockets, bathroom, water pressure, water kettle
Review 19:With hard surface floors, I worried about making noise for other guests. Instant coffee was provided in the room, but no napkins. Doors slam when closing making too much noise.
Review 20:The location is walking distance to the train depot and downtown.
Review 21:Excellent location. A few mins walk from the station, a few more mins on from there to the town centre. Nice old building (very steep stairs, but also a lift). Didn't have breakfast there, but the manager was friendly. a small carpark too.
Review 22:the owner/staff not friendly and not welcoming no air conditioning safe was broken before 11 am we received a rude call telling us we have to leave. though most rooms were apparently vacant
Review 23:location not bad clean
Review 24:Nothing much to complain about. Room equipped with stove but no cooking allowed Price was steep, even for this level of comfort
Review 25:Location - quite convenient and near to the train station Environment - quiet but feels safe at night Elevator - convenient for moving luggage Wifi - reliable Bathroom - clean, bright and comfortable Room - spacious and bright Full length mirror, electric kettle, heating, many power sockets
Review 26:Almost time nobody at the reception. Very small breakfast in the room means no choice for us. This hotel is like a home stay-- I don't think 4 stars hotel's service.
Review 27:Room and bathroom are rather small.
Review 28:The proximity to the station is very convenient. Although close to the centre, it is a quiet place. Breakfast was very good.
Review 29:Owner is only there in the morning. Rest of day and night there is absolutely nobody in the hotel. So basically there is no service at all. Wifi very bad, worked only 20 minutes out of 72-hours.
Review 30:Location, near to center Leiden. Parking spot behind hotel.
Review 31:No double-beds available (only singles pushed together) Although the hotel is in a very quiet location, it is an old building so there is little sound-proofing inside -- you do hear anyone move and walk inside if they are about.
Review 32:Very friendly and helpful staff Very clean Nice, historical building Excellent location close to centre but quiet.
Review 33:not sure if this merited 4 stars - fairly basic hotel with no extra facilities apart from car parking. Expensive for the type of hotel
Review 34:location good - owner very helpful
Review 35:Hotel is advertised as 4 star, in reality it is between 2 and 3 star. Rooms would need serious refurbishment, including the bathroom where the ceiling is mouldy. Bed is super soft and uncomforatble.
Review 36:Hotel location is very close to railway station. Staff is friendly.
Review 37:I was told the Netherlands doesn't get hot....and that I happen to be staying on the few hottest, most humid days of the year. This is when I discovered almost no one owns an air conditioner or fan. My room, as wonderful as it was, was a hotbox....the only saving grace was that big wonderful bathtub, which I kept filling with cold water to soak in. honestly, not enough to keep me from going again
Review 38:location, location, location....within walking distance of Leiden Central Station and downtown Leiden without the noise. Super cute hidden antique gem. I loved it, all of it, especially the big bathtub.
Review 39:Marienpoel is only 3 minutes away form Leiden central station. Rooms are clean and comfortable. Good choice to stay in Leiden.
Review 40:No complaints
Review 41:Great location, small but comfortable room
Review 42:Good location close to the railway station easy to find Good breakfast served in room
Review 43:quite hot in the room under the roof.
Review 44:The location is very good, close to the train station.
Review 45:Close to station and city centre, but peaceful location. Friendly and helpful owner. Nice old building with character.
Review 46:Nothing!
Review 47:Location from station (lots of places to buy something to eat) and friendly manager, Ivan
Review 48:really close to centre
Review 49:I think the breakfast not as I expected
Review 50:Excellent location just 5 minutes from the train station
Review 51:Car parking and convenience of public transport. Good central location for south Holland sightseeing.
Review 52:It was noisy at night some times. Kids on bikes up until 4 am.
Review 53:The hotel was convenient to all the tourist sites, restaurants, and train station.
Review 54:Owner is friendly and helpful. Very nice triple room and parking was easy. Quiet location is an easy walk from the center of town.
Review 55:personal feel of hotel. friendly staff. relative absence of sound disturbance.
Review 56:Everything
Review 57:Nothing
Review 58:Staff cleanliness quiet Big room
Review 59:None
Review 60:1) Location 2) Building 3) Interior 4) Facilities 5) Breakfast 6) Efficient and friendly front office
Review 61:Clean rooms, friendly staff. The manager was really helpful. Location is great, walking distance from the trainstation/center and naturalis.
Review 62:Although doing rewiring the manager made sure it did not impact on stay.
Review 63:service tailored to customer: check-in, carpark, breakfast
Review 64:To much money for a student
Review 65:Cosy and confortable
Review 66:Difficult to locate by satnav
Review 67:Location, fridge, BBC1 on TV
Review 68:Extremely hot in the rooms.
Review 69:Friendly staff, let me use his phone, extra towels, and good advice
Review 70:fabulous location, warm welcome from the owners, and beautiful spacious rooms! 2 lovely rooms perfect for our family of 5!
Review 71:Excellent location, nice room with balcony, friendly manager, parking behind hotel
Review 72:Breakfast wasn't worth the extra 12.75 EUR.
Review 73:Location: convenient to train station, central Leiden, and university institutes, yet reasonably quiet. Beautiful building. Very comfy room.
Review 74:I was phone called to my room several times about remembering my checkout time, put out my break fast trey etc. Very bad soundproofing. Impossible to sleep in without earbuds.
Review 75:Traditional building.
Review 76:The breakfast wasn't worth the money. It was nice to have breakfastdelivered to the room, but it's nothing too exciting. There is greatfood options in the train station. We'd do that next time.
Review 77:Location, location, location! The hotel was right next to the trainstation. One day, we took the train into Amsterdam and it was perfect. If you walk through the train station, you're right in the heart ofthe city center. On Saturday night, you can hear people walking homefrom the bars, but we didn't hear any Sunday or Monday nights. Wedidn't want to fight for parking, so we stayed here because therewas a parking option. On some reviews, people complain that thereisn't someone at the desk 24/7, this is not necessary. Edwin isthere in the am to service breakfast, answer questions, etc. It'snot a big place and there's no need for staff to be there 24/7.Bring your cell phone and call him when you arrive and getting your roomkey is super easy.
Review 78:Did not expect breakfast brought to the room - I prefer to eat in a dining room. There was no cereal for breakfast, which is what I like above all else. So this was disappointing.
Review 79:Interesting older property, distinct from modern hotels that are all the same. Overall, despite my comments about breakfast, it was indeed good value for money.
Review 80:Tiny single bed for a child. Uncooked egg for breakfast. Very noisy, you hear all the creaking above and you hear people in their rooms, it made me feel I had no privacy and had to whisper I had a friend visit me in the afternoon for a few hours, the owner was very unfriendly to her as if she was a prostitute.
Review 81:Was great location near central station. It was very quiet and the standard room was comfortable. I stayed for over two weeks and was very happy with everything from the emailed instructions on how to get my room key for Sunday check-in to the easy of checking out. Would definitely stay here again.
Review 82:Everything! This hotel and it's owners are amazing! It has a 4 starreview but should really be considered 5 star. The rooms are immaculateand it's owners are warm and accommodating. By far the best hotel wehave stayed at outside of Texas! Highly recommend this hotel for a stayin the Netherlands.
Review 83:Personnel was extremely unfriendly:- no reception in the evening. you have to call the owner at your own expense - no possibility to extend the stay beyond the early checkout time at 11 (though the hotel was empty) - no possibility to leave the luggage just for an hour or two after checkout Also: heating was off when arrived, so it took time to warm up the room
Review 84:Location - close to train station
Review 85:The reception desk is not 24 hours. There are contact numbers available. Wi-fi connection was okay, but if you wanted to play a game it was very slow.
Review 86:The hotel is located in a quiet residential neighbourhood. The train station is about a 5 minute walk away. The main shopping and restaurant area is about a 15 minute walk away.
Review 87:For a North American who is used to a breakfast buffet with unlimited coffee, we were surprised by having only one small cup of coffee included with the meal. Since the breakfast is served to your room, it is not easy to then ask for more (but possible, and thanks to the friendly staff not a problem. Might be a normal dutch habit.)
Review 88:Very friendly and helpful owner, who was upbeat and enthusiastic about everything. Definitely above the norm!
Review 89:My only criticism, would be that it would be nice to have a iron in the room....what a very minor comment to make!
Review 90:This hotel is a little gem. Nothing was too much trouble for the owner who paid personal attention to every guest. The rooms are traditionally decorated and really have lots of character to them. Reception is not 24 hours, but there are contact numbers available. We felt completely relaxed, safe and comfortable and a short stroll, took you directly to the city centre. parking cost €10 per day and was well worth the money in the small private car park. I cannot give as much credit as is due - it's just great!
Review 91:Except for room service no breakfast facilities (on Sunday). Parking can be an issue during weekdays.
Review 92:Small hotel close to Leiden city Center, Railway station and University hospital. Very spacious room (junior suite). Adequate bathroom. Free WiFi
Review 93:Assumption that everyone carried a mobile phone. We wouldn't have got in if my wife hadn't brought hers (I don't have one) as the reception was not staffed in the evening
Review 94:Location was brilliant - very convenient
Review 95:Although it was served to the room, the breakfast was not sufficiently satisfactory for me as it did not fit in my expectations.
Review 96:I was very happy with the room as it was the best room I have stayed ever. Very clean and comfortable place, you have everything you may need. A kettle with free tea and coffee, a minibar with drinks and some food, a plasma TV definitely make the life easier and better there.
Review 97:-no heating in bathrooms and no bathmats provided: icecold feet during my stay in early January, and used towels didn't dry overnight for use in the morning. -the room itself hadn't been heated in a long time, everything was cold and clammy, and maid next day turned heating down again -the price is very stiff indeed for an hotel without staff (except in the morning), and when the fire alarm went off in the middle off the night, having no staff on hand was a little disturbing.
Review 98:Very comfortable accommodation, in a beautiful building. Goodlocation for the centre of Leiden. Hotel staff very friendly and agood breakfast! Would recommend this hotel and would definitely stayhere again.
Review 99:No food/drink available, no reception staff from ? until 7.00am. I had to call a number and then was given an access code to the key safe outside the front door to let myself in! Breakfast is served in the room but only available to order from 7.15am with a ten minute delay so as I had toleave at 7.30am I could not even order breakfast!
Review 100:Location, clean, friendly staff. Basic budget friendly hotel.
Review 101:The owner... Very strange...
Review 102:Nothing, very strange owner, we 3 ladies over 40 were treated like teenagers! He had only negative things to say ABOUT Everything...he is in the wrong business... We had a kitchen that we were told not to use? No out of date food was allowed.. ????? No smoking on our balcony, which had chairs and tables... There are no rooms to sit, eat or anything else.. The reception was a. Box at best... We had a good time Out of the hotel.
Review 103:Making a double bed from two single beds is less comfortable than having a double bed.
Review 104:Good location, near trains, and busses. The price is reasonable for a hotel near Amsterdam, Leiden and the Hague.
Review 105:The breakfast was a bit costly.
Review 106:Easy access from the station and not very far from Schipol Airport. Shoppin was great and bus services were excelllent. The Hotel is situated away from the traffic although the entrance is on the main road. Friendly neighbours. Please say hello to the Surinamese couple who helped me to get into the hotel.
Review 107:Signposting to Marienpoel was very good, esp for visitors first vising Leiden. Parking good. VFM.- We found Edwin to be most informative and helpful. It made you feel valued which is why we would certainly stay again. Rooms were comfortable, breakfast well presented .
Review 108:A lovely hotel to stay in. Situated close to the station and also +- 15min from Schiphol Airport by train. We were a group of four ladies with heavy baggage and yet we managed to walk the distance from the station to the hotel with out any problems. We used Leiden as our basis and traveled by train from there to Amsterdam and surrounding places with ease. At first we did not book for any breakfast, but we opted for the 7euro breakfast after we were told that this was a choice as well. We were pleasantly surprised with the spread that we received! We surely will recommend this hotel to our friends.
Review 109:Nice rooms. Our room had twin beds with large bathroom and was quitecomfortable and very clean. It was on far side from the road so veryquiet. Breakfast is brought to your room at a pre-arrangement time andis substantial - definitely more than continental. My only wrinkle wasthe price of wi-fi (12 Euros from sign-on to noon the next day),although there is a free computer in the hotel's small lobby. If you arelate you may have to pick up your key from a safe-box outside. But noproblem. It is 5 minutes walk from the main Leiden station but also veryquiet, away from the tourist side of the very pleasant town.
Review 110:The only slightly disappointing thing was the absence of a lounge or breakfast room. Breakfast was served at the room. It did not feel like a "proper hotel" in this sense, so I would say that it is a short break hotel, rather than a main holiday type hotel.
Review 111:Attractive building, well-located just outside Leiden centre,, in a pleasant , green suburb within easy walking distance of the main Leiden railway station. Clean, spacious and comfortable room (I got a deal on a double, though traveling on my own.
Review 112:Additional amounts for internet, television and breakfast, on top of the high prices compared to the furniture inside and outside the own room. The room categories are intransparent. Superior and standard could be the same room.
Review 113:The hotel has a privileged city exposure. The rooms are clean.
Review 114:it is a complete self service hotel, self check-in, no reception, no assistance for heavy luggage etc. I find the four stars a rare rating for such a hotel, since their service is not better than Etap hotel or Formule 1. Furniture in the rooms is very old fashioned, taste of interior designer is questionable. I was wondering before booking cause other reviews were indicating this, and I can confirm this by experience now.
Review 115:big room, centrally located, very anonymous and ideal if you're a criminal on the run
Review 116:The breakfast is quite poor. It is served in the room. Theoretically youhave to make a call phone to the reception to order the breakfast inbetween 7:30 and 9:30, but sometimes the owner call the room (maybe youare still sleeping) to inform you that the breakfast is ready (thishappen to me twice versus five days of stay around 8:00-8:30. One of theday was Sunday). The reception close around noon and there is not the possibility to leave the luggage in the hotel if one has a late flight. You have to use a left luggage at the rail station of Leiden Centraal.
Review 117:Hairdryder didn't work. Needs a little bit of maintenance.
Review 118:Very friendly staff. Small cosy hotel. Quiet (when sleeping at the backside of the hotel). Reasonable prices for beverages. Good breakfast. Clean rooms.
The Fine Print
Please note that the kitchen in the suites is not equipped for cooking.Unfortunately the hotel has no handicap accessible facilities.
