Reviews for Quinta de Santo Antonio

Review 1:The wifi wasn't great but leave the phone aside and enjoy the view...

Review 2:Everything! The view from this place is amazing... all the vineyards and the river is absolutely beautiful. The host is very nice and can help you with your travel plans. Don't miss dinner that the place offers. Great food, local wine and the best thing is the Port wine... Directly from the barrel - 30&40 years old... The rooms are not big but new and clean.

Review 3:Nothing really.

Review 4:Beautiful location with absolutely stunning views. The house is decorated beautifully, making the amazing views the focal point. Breakfast was amazing, featuring many local & home-made specialties. Highly recommend reserving the dinner in advance. Food/wine was excellent and it is a great chance to chat with fellow travelers over the family style dinner.

Review 5:Nothing.

Review 6:Quita de Santo Antonio is all about Carlos the manager who is a wonderful host, knowledgable about the area and the whole process of Port wine making and provides excellent advice of places to go. The view from the property are amazing, and the communal dinners are highly recommended.

Review 7:Nothing

Review 8:Fantastic views of the river and the terraced vineyards. The owner and staff were very friendly and informative. The food and wine in the evening were very good.

Review 9:Just don't trust your car GPS to get you to the Quinta. It really is not hard to get to but the turn off from the main road is not on the map. Coming from the road along the Douro turn toward Tabuaco then look for the Quinta do Santo Antonio sign to the right.

Review 10:This place is in a spectacular location on side of hill overlooking the Douro. Many quintas nearby to sample wine and port. One of the most beautiful views I have ever had from any room anywhere I have stayed, We visited Portugal in September with Harvest underway and got to see first hand early grape processing in the Douro and in some smaller places the practice of treading on the grapes is still practiced. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen for myself. People all over the Douro very friendly and I learned so much about how they make both wine and port, so different than in France and in California for example.I loved the people who run the Quinta also as they were most helpful to direct us to wineries we had not planned to visit and we were never disappointed. I would highly recommend the Douro and this Quinta.

Review 11:The lighting could have been better for dinner - it was very bright and would have been nice to have some candles to create more atmosphere.

Review 12:The location of this hotel is amazing!! It is high up overlooking the beautiful Douro valley. There are lots of places to sit outside and appreciate the view. The wine is fantastic and so reasonable (5 Euros for a bottle!). The dinner (great value at 25 Euros - 3 courses, wine and port) and breakfast were both excellent and the staff are very helpful. Overall a fantastic experience and brilliant value for money. I would highly recommend. The staff are very helpful and make you feel very welcome.

Review 13:Horrible - this is the worst place I have ever stayed. Our air conditioner was broken, the TV didn't work. The host has a terrible attitude...he told my 18 yr old son that we are guests in his house and basically we should be happy to be there....ARE YOU KIDDING ME? We always respect the places we visit and have never been treated like this. No drinks available and we are made to feel horrible when we ask for drinks. When the AC was not working we were told to open the window....look at my arm and how many bites I got from an open window! YOUR SHOULD PAY ME TO STAY HERE!

Review 14:Only positive is the view, but how can you screw up mother nature

Review 15:The wifi couldn't really cope with all the people using it.

Review 16:Lovely atmosphere, easy to meet other guests at breakfast and dinners. Beautiful location with amazing view of the river and vineyards. Great pool area, very relaxing. A wonderful stay here!

Review 17:Don't listen to Google to get here - Directions are good until it tells you to turn off of the blacktop road - drive 100m further for the RIGHT turn - a cobbled one lane road.

Review 18:Carlos and his staff are awesome. Both breakfasts and dinners were outstanding and VERY reasonably priced. Walking the grounds, tasting fresh fruit from the trees and getting personal views from Carlos on Port and wine-making made this a stay we won't soon forget. Carlos is very knowledgeable about other quintas to visit nearby - Popa is a really good one. Highly, highly recommended.

Review 19:First time accessing the Quinta up a steep, narrow, cobbled road is not for the faint-hearted. I enjoyed it - my wife not so much. Best to check this place out on Google Earth to get the route and not rely on GPS.

Review 20:This property affords the most magnificent views of arguably the most scenic stretch of the Douro valley. The room was small but the common areas were spacious and immaculately kept. The optional dinner was excellent with ample food and wine including a sample of the owner's Port (1985?) from when the Quinta was an operational winery. A walk through the vines was extremely interesting especially seeing the vineyard posts made of local schist and of course the incredible views. A walk to Quinta Popa for tasting and an excellent and informative visit was a highlight. Thank you Carlos for allowing us to share this beautiful Quinta in the magnificent Douro valley, if only for one night.

Review 21:Very difficult to find the place because the GPS coordinates are false - they show that the Quinta is next to road. But instead you need to forward until next turn up to mountains, and only then is the sign about the place. The owner had weird sense of humor, special attitude only for people who choose dinner for 25 eur per person. Very tiny rooms. We were on our honeymoon and hoped to have nice attitude, instead we got no attitude at all. No excursion in the house/winery. While the rest of guests had their dinner we ordered a bottle of wine (this is also old winery) - the owner wasn`t happy about our order because the wine was too cheap to be served by waiter, so he forbid him to bring it us in the garden - he thought we don`t understand Portuguese but we did. Fortunately, the waiter was the only nice person there, he served it. Everything around the house was dirty, the windows, furniture in the garden. Lot of cats! Starving cats, which were waiting at the kitchen door and drinking from the pool. No Wifi in the room. Not worth the money except you want to pay only for beautiful view. Glad we didn`t stay one more night as we wanted at first.

Review 22:The view.

Review 23:Finding the place, satnav takes you to the village of Adoringo, way above the Quinta. A local farmer kindly took us down the narrow steep "roads" to get there. Easy to find off the main road running alongside the river!!

Review 24:Everything

Review 25:Everything was great even through we prefer more genuin rustic living. That is hard to find in the area. Mostly better Hotel standard which also shows on the price. This quinoa was one of the better thought!

Review 26:My gps played in behind the Quinta and this was worrisome because it was a land and dangerous road! If you begin to drive in narrow streets in the middle of a little town, go back !!!

Review 27:The view !!! Beautiful !!! Peace Site !!! Drink a wine enjoying the Douro and its mountains !!!

Review 28:Make sure, you have the right address since there is more than one quinta with the same name in that area. Our GPS sent us by mistake to the village of Adorigo and the way from there to the right quinta gave us some unexpected adrenalin (not recommended after dark!). Better to approach from the other direction, the street among the river.

Review 29:Amazing scenery. Good (and inexpensive) wines. For wine tastings you can reach the lovely Quinta do Popa in walking distance.

Review 30:Nothing , except leaving

Review 31:The view from our room was amazing. Carlos and the staff were so friendly and helpful . The whole house was lovely . The food was all homemade and delicious. One of the best stays we have ever had.

Review 32:Great view, hospitable host and crew - close to the things to do in the region - relaxation at its best! Common dinner with host and other guest at the 'long-table' leads automatically to nice conversation and sharing of experiences.

Review 33:There are 2 larger rooms and 3 smaller rooms. The small rooms are small. But you are unlikely to spend too much time there. The social areas have superb views.

Review 34:Where ever in Portugal you are, you must visit the Duoro. The road heading up-river has been recently voted the most beautiful in the world. But, more to the point, you must search for one of the residential Quintas (residential wineries) on the mountain. Quinta de Santo Antonio must be one of the best. Its dramatic views of the Duoro, refreshing breezes and stillness are a dream come true. Carlos, its owner, could not be more hospitable and generous. The panoramic views from the lounge and dining room and the whole place is idyllic. Rooms are alittle tight but this comment is of little significance since everything else is magnificent. PS. Go no further for your wine tasting than Quinto do Panascal, next door to Santo Antonio and the oldest winery in the Duoro, fascinating, informative and fairly priced.

Review 35:If there is any areea to complain about, romms where a little narrow. The dining area and hallway eccoing ... that said it was a quite and cosy place

Review 36:This is a very worm and friendly place, here you live with Carlos at his Quinta. Carlos welcomes you and guides you, there is no lilmits to service and support.

Review 37:Beautiful grounds, new building. Room was nice and very homey and bed was fantastic as were the view. Breakfast was fabulous. Location is not central to the city but has magnificent views of the Douro!

Review 38:Dinner which you must sign up for in advance (rice with shredded duck, lettuce, tomato, cabbage and 1 glass of wine and one glass of port) a little disappointing for €20.

Review 39:Very friendly, quiet and spectacular location.

Review 40:No hair drier in the room.

Review 41:The friendly atmosphere created by the host, Carlos, who enthusiastically showed us his winery and allowed us to taste his 100year old Port. It was like staying in a luxurious private house. The location of the quinta is incredible, perched 250m above the river with dramatic views up and downstream. We had some difficulty finding the place, due to inaccurate GPS coordinates, but this was a minor grumble. Carlos was also very helpful in recommending restaurants and places to visit.

Review 42:An amazing place, very well received by the owners that let you feel like home. With a breathless view over the Douro river and the vineyards. Highly recommended. An experience to repeat.

Review 43:Saying that it's the 4th time I stayed at Qt St Antonio says it all. Excellent view, very peaceful, Qt St Antonio is the best place to rest or to stay a few days while exploring the Quintas from Douro.

Review 44:We arrived in the afternoon with our young son. They had a bed all set up for him and gave us the room close to a public lounge area so we could put him to sleep and then relax in the nearby space. Breakfast was great and the view was fantastic. Very nice staff and a nice way to see a different part of Portugal.

Review 45:Excellent location with spectacular views on the Douro Valley with its wineyards. Very friendly reception by Carlos the host - and given there are not that many rooms and everyone sits on the same table for dinner (optional booking) and breakfast, nice 'big family atmosphere' with the other guests.

Review 46:Public restaurants were distant. Owner did provide for a ride one evening to a very good restaurant. Make a reservation for dinner before arrival day.

Review 47:Wonderful views of the Douro River valley. Enjoyed communal dinners and breakfast. Room was very quiet (we were somewhat isolated from the other guests).

Review 48:We loved everything about Carlos' place. The location, quinta, rooms, pool everything is beautiful and clean. We enjoyed the home made dinner with the other guests and plenty of Carlos' own wine.

Review 49:There are no close-by restaurants.

Review 50:We liked the views, we enjoyed walking around the property, seeing the grapes harvested, and talking with Carlos, the owner

Review 51:Driving up the little road leading to the 'Quinta' was a bit challenging, but easy to forget as soon as we arrived at the lovely setting.

Review 52:The accommodation was very good, our room had astonishing views, the social areas were comfortable, with large windows facing the river valley. We had dinner with other guests at a long table by a great window (this was a lovely interactive experience). Carlos, the owner, is very relaxed and friendly and provides excellent information about places to visit and restaurants in the area. It was a great experience overall.

Review 53:The only small challenge about the Quinta is learning how to get there, once you reach the exit for the first time, it's as easy as it gets...

Review 54:Staff was amazingly perfect, kind and caring. You can choose the frame you want, the view is breath taking. Home cooked dinner will impress you, as you will enjoy a glass or two of the delicious wine produced at the Quinta. But don't forget, Tawny is an expected experience at the end of the meal.

Review 55:Nothing to say here. Only piece of advice is you absolutely need a car. Make sure you take the right road up to the vinyard, we didn't and it was.....interesting!

Review 56:This Quinta is beautiful, the views are simply gorgeous. The swimming pool and walks around the surrounding vinyards are lovely. Our hosts were very friendly and accommodating. Very relaxed place. The driveway up to the Quinta is bumpy, but fun. Really recommend this place for peace, quiet, lovely food and great views.

Review 57:There was nothing not to like.

Review 58:Quinta Santo Antonio has created areas of relaxation where you can enjoy reading a book with a glass of wine and take in the stunning views of the Douro Valley The hosts Carlos was very helpfull with his knowledge of the area and his wife created amazing dinners it was truly a perfect stay. His Port wine is of a great quality. We hope to return someday!!!

Review 59:No dinner :( The restaurant that the "white van" took you was horrible!!! Do not go there! Bettet to drive a SHORT drive to Quinta de Pego. Book the dinner during the day. Have a drink while enjoying the view before dinner (by the time you have eaten it would be ok to drive again).

Review 60:Location, views, nice staff. Great that you could get a bottel of wine to drink by the pool.

Review 61:The location is superb and although the track into the Quinta isn't easy to find it is well worth it. The host is very friendly and helpful with a very good sense of humour. A Good value guest house.

Review 62:although the breakfast was great, it was a schlep to go out at night for supper specially if you're staying longer than 2 nights. no snacks or light lunches available.

Review 63:beaurtiful view of the Douro Valley. great hospitality and peaceful surroundings. save for children. excellent breakfast

Review 64:A wonderful quinta in spectacular location. Our room (LBV) was fabulous, spacious and with wonderful view. The owners are very friendly and you immediately feel like at home.

Review 65:3. difficult of acess without a car 4. No Porto wine

Review 66:1. the position of the hotel on top of a hill with a fantastic view 2. friendliness of the owners

Review 67:The room was a little small for the price Value for money compared with the other 2 quintas we stayed in The approach road might be a bit hairy after a few wine tastings!

Review 68:Spectacular views! Good location in the Douro Star gazing from the window of the room The design of the place There were 'secret corners' in the grounds to grab some privacy Parking

Review 69:Amazing place, host are incredible friendly. The house made dinner and their own (also house made) wine were unbelievable. We would recommend this accomodation to anybody, we are planning to come back for sure as well! Personal message to Carlos: Greetings and best wishes from the "coach" from Hévíz,Hungary! ;)

Review 70:If you have a fear of heights, the drive up is a little gut wrenching. You get use to it after a couple of times.

Review 71:Views,views, and more views. High up in the mountain among the vineyards. The owners are very warm and personable. Most rooms have a spectacular view of the Douro Valley.

Review 72:Looks more like a guest house (Pensão in portuguese) than a Hotel. Rooms are very tight and decor is poor.

Review 73:The view

Review 74:Amazing location, very friendly host.

Review 75:Fantastic views, lovely staff.

Review 76:Lots of cats in the garden and around swimmingpool.

Review 77:Location is perfect. Breakfast is good. Friendly staff. Rooms are clean and nice.

Review 95:Perfect location and hospitality

Review 96:Weak wifi at the end rooms

Review 97:Lovely view and house Hospitable host

Review 98:The beautiful, spectacular site high above the Duoro, in a surrounding, working vineyard.

Review 99:worth the lilltle climbing in car ! road is pave now.

Review 100:everything !! hospitality, gorgeous location. Best place i ever had ! Thanks Carlos.

Review 101:- rooms with good view are rather small

Review 102:- great location / incredible view - great breakfast - the owner cares very much about the needs of every single guest, very nice person!

Review 103:The room is tiny but it is just a detail because our stay was just amazing.

Review 104:The location is fantastic. The view on the river amazing. Carlos, the host, is friendly and give you good advice...his Porto is excellent! Great quinta to stay.

Review 105:We enjoyed the friendliness of the staff and the owner, Carlos. The guest house is beautifully designed and modern, the bedroom windows open to the amazing vista of the Douro River Valley. The roads to the Quinte are steep so travel at night is not advised. Dinner is served at the Quinte but must be arranged ahead of arrival by sending an e-mail. Guests gather at a communal table and communicate beautifully in several different languages.

Review 106:We liked everything.

Review 107:The location is in the middle of the best part of the Douro Valley. The quinta is up a steep road, but after driving it once, it is easy. It is better to be somewhat up from the valley for the quiet and the views. The walks in the vineyards are wonderful. The owner, Carlos, could not be more congenial. This is a great location to do day trips and wine tasting around the Douro Valley. Carlos has many suggestions for activities. Or, just sit by the pool and enjoy the wonderful views.

Review 108:There was nothing we didn't like?

Review 109:The friendly owners and their generosity, making buffet dinner when we hadn't notified them of wanting dinner in advance. Also their excellent help with suggestions for visiting nearby wine estates.

Review 110:we had to search a lot to get there, through small and dangerous mountain paths the signalization was very poor

Review 111:the views on the Douro valley are beautiful, absolutely more than worth to be visited nice quinta friendly people

Review 112:Beautiful location and stunning sights. EXCELLENT wine, breakfast and great owner! The Douro Valley atmosphere is irreplaceable. We'll be back for sure.

Review 113:This place is aWOW!!Possibly one of the best places we have ever stayed at.Carlos and his wife could not have been better...they are the very best hosts.

Review 114:Our room was the tiniest we stayed in through two plus weeks in Portugal--just big enough to accomodate the queen bed and a desk. This was theonly negative, and of minimal importance, given other amenities andshared space.

Review 115:The beautiful, spectacular site high above the Duoro, in a surrounding, working vineyard. The quinta, with its comfortable and spacious sharedlounge and meal spaces, including the communal breakfast table. Theexcellent guidance we received from our host, Carlos, for restaurants, activities, and drives in the area. The excellent breakfasts and, oneevening during our stay, a hosted communal dinner with our fellowguests, concluding with port and good/fun conversation amongst theinteresting and internationally diverse group. Memorable!

Review 116:The owner Carlos has a good heart I guess but can seem a bit stiff and peculiar in first instance. He seemed to busy for his customers but later on turned out to be a good host by arranging a free taxi ride for a diner in a Tubuaco restaurant, a twenty minutes ride. Pool was a bit dirty, cleaning seemed weeks ago, maybe too late in the season (October). Pool view compensates all by the way...

Review 117:Fantastic place to stay for the superbe location alone. Rooms small but luxurious and modern. View from your window on the Douro valley is just breath taking. Great place for some relaxation and refueling of your inner battery. Have some good fun on the pool biliard in the basement. Breakfast buffet is briljant.

Review 118:Bedroom decor could be enhanced to match rest of the property.

Review 119:Magnificent location in magical setting. Beautifully designed property that invites guests to stay on and drink in the surroundings. Swimming pool to boot. Host is fun and seeks to please.

Review 120:The steep and sometimes scary access road ...

Review 121:Everything: the amazing location with outstanding view of the Douro river and valley, the service, the friendly and welcoming owner, the wine, the vineyards, the relaxed atmosphere.

Review 122:There are no bikes available.

Review 123:We had a very pleasant stay at the quinta. The beds and showers aregreat. The view from the quinta down into the Douro valley is jawdropping! Both inside and outside the quinta are plenty of places whereyou can relax and enjoy the view in comfort. We had dinner at the quintafor 25 euros P.P. You'll get 3 courses which are tasteful butcertainly no haute cuisine, however the 30-year old homemade Port wasthe best we tasted in all of Portugal. From the Quinta you can easilytake a stroll up the mountain and enjoy the views even more.

The Fine Print
