Just 3.1 miles from the fortified town of Elvas, the recently refurbished Varchotel features typical Alentejo architecture. It offers bright rooms with modern décor and satellite flat-screen TVs.

The hotel’s Dom Januário Restaurant has a separate area where the daily breakfast buffet is served. In another area, it offers delicacies from the Alentejo region, such as grilled chicken and pork and lamb dishes.

Review 1：NO restaurant facilities, closed Monday, NO bar, closed Mondays. Breakfast was poor but adequate. Early morning noise from dogs and lorry's starting up next door.
Review 2：The receptionist went out of her way to help us.
Review 3：The accommodation did not match the description - no settee or ironing facilities in the room. First room offered was extremely smelly, second one OK to start with but in the morning the WC backed up showing the neighbouring rooms faeces in the bowl. Not a very pleasant experience!

Review 5：It doesn't look as shiny as on the photos. The location is not that close to vineyards that are on the photos. It's near a truck parking lot and highway.
Review 6：The hotel was further out of town than we had expected - this meant we had to drive to see the very worthwhile sights of Elvas.
Review 7：A perfectly decent hotel with a large garden which was useful when travelling with a dog. There is an attached restaurant (which looked quite pricey) and a self service restaurant which turned out to be better than it looked.

Review 9：The hotel was very pretty with a large court-yard area. The actual hotel resturant was not open for dinner only breakfast so we ate in the restaurant attached to the hotel which had an entry through the courtyard. The meal which was two courses and wine cost 38 euros for the two of us and was very tasty, served by a pleasant waiter.
Review 10：this is the 3rd year we have stayed here but its policy of charging 15euros per night for every dog makes it very expensive. will have to look elsewhere next year. please pass on our comments
Review 11：The bathroom was so small and the sink would not have held more than 3 inches of water. The bed felt damp and the pillows were hard. An external light shone in our window on and off all night. The restaurant was very expensive and the food was awful cold and little choice.

Review 15：Dinners in the restaurant were excellent and such large portions that on the second evening we decided to share a main course so as to leave room for dessert. The cericaia (a local pudding) was delicious, particularly with the lemon sorbet, which the waitress recommended.
