Reviews for Hotel Sao Joao De Deus

Review 1:Sadly the hotel must have been going through some renovations, because the rooms were rather sad, we had a double room on the second floor, the room was very large but the floor had no carpet, the lights were very dim and the tv was too small you could not even see it from the bed (and it was not working too well. We had already been at this hotel a few months back and our impression was that back then the facilities were better taken care of, however since the other time we loved the place we do believe this was all due to low season renovations, and we will recommend our friends to stay there in the future.

Review 2:We loved the gardens and the location, the place is very well located and gives access to elvas main touristic points.

Review 3:Good location - everything can be reached on foot (even the bus station if you don't travel with much luggage). Nice breakfast. Charming building.

Review 4:The staff were always pleasant and will to help. When I arrived I dropped my bags at the front desk so that I could park the car, when I returned the bags had been taken to the room, excellent service. The breakfast was great and the staff were always willing to assist with advise.

Review 5:Only booked in for one night!! Should have stopped longer

Review 6:Beautifully decorated room with an olde world feel to it. Very spacious. Excellent breakfast. Top value for money. Fantastic location. Brilliant value for money. Staff very helpful

Review 7:The only problem we had was in locating the hotel. Don't rely on your Garmin or GPS or you will find yourself way off course. Print a map showing its location in Elvas before you go.

Review 8:We found this hotel charming with lovely old world rooms, big marble bathrooms, beautiful worn marble staircase. Fabulous night clerk entertained us with a short lesson in Portugese history. Would love to return in the Spring or Summer to enjoy the beautiful grounds.

Review 9:Amazing position, the hotel was not only very convenient for the town centre, but it was actually built into the fortifications. We had a lovely room on the second floor overlooking the quiet gardens

Review 10:Overall, there is nothing terribly wrong with the hotel. It might be the best choice in the town. But it is a bit "tired" and needs some "jazzing up." The breakfast, ordinary, also felt "tired." The staff seemed professional but distant. The TV was a downer and offered just a few Portuguese stations.

Review 11:Location right on the edge of the old town of Elvas is great. It is also easy to get to and from, making this hotel a good one as a center to explore this part of Portugal. The swimming pool and area is fine.

Review 12:Slight musty smell in downstairs corridor- perhaps to be expected in building from 1640.

Review 13:Beautiful location on city walls. Lovely pool. Spacious room and balcony.

Review 14:Nothing

Review 15:Nice location, nice ambiance, beautiful gardens, swimming pool, nice view over the city walls. Nice staff, parking place easy within the premises. Good breakfast.

Review 16:Very boring breakfast

Review 17:First visit lovely huge room up on the terrace Second visit poor tv poor wifi and much smaller room which had we known we would not have returned.

Review 18:Nothing. Although I had a room with balcony and I'd hope that the completely internal rooms are less expensive.

Review 19:Stunning hotel, superbly located, and providing a magnificent breakfast to start the day.

Review 20:We were not informed that there was à wedding. Loud music till 4:00 and screaming kids in front of our door and knocking on it. We got another room on another floor where at least no screaming kids were present. Buns at breakfast were not baked inedible.

Review 21:Great location friendly receptionist who explained all about the history of Portugal Elvas and hotel

Review 22:- the first room we got was equipped with a one and a half size bed, room was invaded by ants that went all around our stuff - the tube of the shower was broken (10€ and 10 minutes to replace it if they would) - breakfast can be drastically improved

Review 23:A place with history, including the hotel. The room was separate from its sitting room. A terrace with arbor of orange trees. Friendly staff. Food in restaurants nearby. Pharmacy nearby. Museum of Contemporary Art.

Review 24:There were a few minor things that wouldn't have bothered me if I'd been staying in a hostel but this is a four-star hotel. First of all, it was necessary to run the shower for about 10 minutes in order to get any hot water. This seems to be a terrible waste of water particularly in a country where it is such a precious resource. The TV hadn't been properly tuned in so hardly any of the channels were available. The breakfast was acceptable but the coffee was awful. In fairness to the hotel, I didn't mention any of these points to them because I was only staying for two nights so I can't say whether they would have been helpful or not. Finally, although the staff were efficient, the occasional smile would not go amiss!

Review 25:Beautiful old building sympathetically converted into a hotel. Delightful gardens and an excellent location. I had a very pleasant and spacious room on the first floor but when I left the cleaners had a number of doors to other rooms open and I noticed that some of the rooms on the ground floor looked rather small and dark.

Review 26:The smell of drains in the lower corridor and in our bathroom. The drapes did not fit the windows so did not keep out the light.

Review 27:Excellent breakfast. Secure parking, great swimming pool. Great location for exploring Elvas which was all within walking distance. Close to many cafes, restaurants.

Review 28:No staff member at the bar of an evening, at to ask reception staff. Ended up going across road for drinks.

Review 29:Location, large clean rooms, great swimming pool.

Review 32:Breakfast was a bit weak but you have to consider the great value for money.

Review 33:Great location and hotel. We had a large and comfortable room and we really enjoyed our stay here.

Review 34:Would have liked tea/coffee making facilities in room

Review 35:The hotel is created and preserved as part of Portuguese history. The town is well worth a visit and close to many interesting tourist sights of the Alentejo region.

Review 36:Loved the whole experience.

Review 37:The history of this building is extraordinary. Night staff gave us a wonderful tour during quiet hours. Don't miss the white marble ballroom where the fire engines were stored. Great architecture.

Review 38:Very poor quality food at breakfast - worth avoiding, certainly not worth paying extra for if it is not included in your room rate.(Tinned fruit, plastic ham, scrambled eggs which had congealed into a lump and turned green - I kid you not!) The bar is very, very expensive - for what is essentially a corridor. There is a very pleasant bar/café out of the front door and turn left - about 60 metres, go there instead.

Review 39:great location - I imagine the pool will be great in summer

Review 40:A patio full of orange trees loaded with oranges, but no fresh orange juice served at breakfast. A missed opportunity to please guests in winter time. Also, the magnetic key cards to enter our room did not work most of the time -very frustrating.

Review 41:The friendly staff who went out of their way to be helpful. The charm and character of this tastefully restored historical property, and the fire in the dining room fireplace.

Review 42:Small point but the pillows on the bed were not comfortable.

Review 43:Location of the hotel inside the city walls was a fantastical do close to all historic buildings and restaurants.. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful.

Review 44:Breakfast and the incredible attitude of the receptionist. When we were checking out the receptionist asked if we were happy with everything and rather than give a glib response I mentioned that the breakfast was poor and did not do the hotel justice. Far from enquiring further, or even apologising, he looked daggers at us and did not say another word ! If they would be interested in constructive criticism I would be pleased to mention the powdery coffee, tinned fruit and bottled fruit juice ( and this when the oranges were falling off the trees in their garden ! ) , the cereal choice of cornflakes or cornflakes, not to mention the bacon and scrambled eggs prepared hours earlier. Such a pity as it is otherwise a place to which I would return.

Review 45:The hotel is very well located being within easy walking distance of the city and with a spacious private parking area. The building is old but well maintained and is very spacious and full of character.

Review 46:Elegant old building with style. Lovely two tiered garden area with two smallish pools in a raised area with views over the countryside. Helpful staff. Hotel has its own very large parking area. Good value

Review 47:Nothing not to like!

Review 48:The location, in a former monastery is quite literally within the 17th century city wall. The pool is on the battlements - great relaxation within part of a World Heritage Site + friendly helpful staff.

Review 49:Breakfast room dark & dreary, swimming pool seen better days - mosaic tiles missing!

Review 50:Interesting building, and roof garden, with great views over superb town fortifications.

Review 51:The biggest disapointment was the restaurant was CLOSED. The bar was hours were irregular!! The room was very dark because it lacked adeqate lighting.

Review 52:Room was very good, but lacked good lighting. The bed was very comfortable. The hotel building was very interesting. Close to town. Parking good.

Review 53:The hotel was in a great position inside the city walls. We had large bedroom in the old part of the hotel. the staff where very friendly. Would definitely stay here again.

Review 54:lack of stoppers in the bidet and washstand. Bathing tub too high without rubber matress

Review 55:very good bed, good temperture conditioning, good silence, good parking

Review 56:Nothing really. The pool has lost quite a lot of its mosaic tiles which doesn't look very pretty, but it is in a lovely setting so not really off-putting.

Review 57:Right in the walls of the fortress town - swimming pool next to the gun emplacements! Great G&T in the walled patio. Free on site parking for the hotel. Enormous room and jacuzzi bath. Highly recommended. Elvas is beautifull and well worth a visit.

Review 58:Breakfast coffee wasnt great, but otherwise couldnt fault the spread

Review 59:Right in the old town, historic building (was the medieval 'hospital'), but fantastic quiet room Excellent facilities inc small swimming pool on hotel roof with charming garden Huge room with marble floor. Amazingly, managed w/o switching on air con in July; they know how to build back then ... Very helpful friendly staff, efficent, free no fuss wifi, free and easy car parking

Review 60:- Spotty Wi-Fi - Unreliable electronic room keys

Review 61:- Great beds - Polite and helpful staff - Historic building - Breakfast included - Tastefully decorated - Nice price - Convenient location

Review 62:It is a pity they did not serve dinner as the restaurant was charming. However, there are plenty of good restaurants close by.

Review 63:Lovely gardens, large room and bathroom. Excellent breakfast. A superb location with lots of history in the hotel, the town and surrounding areas.

Review 64:All perfectly ! Thank you! will be able to come again!

Review 65:No hot water, no wifi, poor breafast, even worse coffee!

Review 66:Location, character.

Review 67:Spacious bedroom and huge bathroom. Building very interesting. Staff friendly and helpful. Good breakfast.

Review 68:A cupboard in our bathroom would be helpful. There would be enough space.

Review 69:The Historic environment

Review 70:Very smart hotel in old convent inside city walls. Good facilities, room and breakfast.

Review 71:Everything! Hotel very interesting . Staff helpful and friendly. Breakfast good and our room was huge. Very handy to explore Elvas

Review 72:Quite run down, uncomfortable beds, no hot water, horrible breakfast.

Review 73:Location, parking, the building history.

Review 74:Breakfast was extremely poor.

Review 75:Amazing building, well refurbished. Very large room and bathroom.

Review 76:No lift to our room. Breakfast very ordinary.

Review 77:Location. Historic building. Beautiful gardens. Helpful staff.

Review 78:Built into walls of old military hospital converted 8 years ago it has a striking el egance. And suprisingly interesting gardens

Review 79:NA

Review 80:A fantastic hotel in which I WILL come back to. When leaving we both assured this is a secret stay.

Review 81:Breakfast is just average and should be improved.

Review 82:Fantastic hotel with huge rooms. Bathrooms are actual rooms with big windows.

Review 83:Everything , and the staff so helpfull (Rodolfo )thankyou for all recommendations xxx

Review 88:Old furniture, old rooms

Review 89:The staff

Review 90:Beautiful location and great staff. An old building nicely modernized.

Review 91:They ran out of gin

Review 92:Big bed

Review 93:Think we were the only couple in a large hotel, which maybe the reason the breakfast was not very good.

Review 94:Friendly staff, beautiful courtyard.

Review 95:Historic building, excellent staff. Excellent Resturant within 50m.

Review 109:Easy to find, great for parking, characterful, great courtyard & gardens

Review 110:Wow! Such a beautiful, well-kept establishment with such a great history in its walls. Close to everything, helpful staff, beautiful surroundings. We had a great room looking out over the street. Loved it!

Review 111:Maybe more choice at breakfast.

Review 112:Everything, especially Rudolfo who told us so much about the history of Elvas and places of interest that we should visit.

Review 113:Sat nav couldn't locate the street the hotel is on.

Review 114:Beautiful grounds. Comfortable large room and bathroom. Luxurious bedding and towels. Great parking at rear of hotel.

Review 115:No Plugs in sink or bath,so how were we supposed to take a bath or a wet shave?! No blind at bathroom window so privacy issue! Reception staff couldn't offer any explanation about lack of plugs! Restaurant and bar closed! How does this hotel get a 4 star rating...should be 2 star at best?!

Review 116:Easy walk into town.

Review 117:Restaurant was closed and the pool area and furniture need a lot of attention and one pool was closed

Review 118:The hotel is ideally located very relaxing the staff were excellent

Review 119:The balcony rooms only have single beds and the décor/fittings are tired. Restaurant was closed for dinner.

Review 120:Spacious bedroom with balcony and good views located on the top floor. Very quiet and peaceful ( did not see any other guests as hotel almost empty).
