Reviews for Solar da Bica
Review 1:we found it a little expensive 9€ for breakfast, but it's optional so you don't have to take it (it's written on website, but we didn't know about it) ...
Review 2:everything is great, very lovely and helping staff, a great organic garden to pick up whatever you like, covered pool, sauna etc (7€ for two)... nice place to relax!
Review 3:Great location for hiking but only 2 miles from local restaurants. Beautifully kept hotel with friendly and helpful staff. Excellent value for money.
Review 4:Our stay at Solar da Bica was an amazing and relaxing. We cannot thank the staff enough for being so warm and helpful. All the amenities are exactly as described if not better. We'd definitely recommend it and we'd like to return one day.
Review 5:It was a fair distance to the town to get to a restaurant (not possible to walk). However we were given some great advice and went to a super, reasonably priced local restaurant.
Review 6:Amazing location and wonderfully welcoming staff. Lovely guest lounge area with an honesty bar - a great touch.
Review 7:The location is quite remote, approximately 4-5 km from the city, thus for restaurants you have to drive to Sao Vicente. Car is of course a must.
Review 8:We stayed two nights. The hosts were very friendly. Our room was nice and clean, with fridge and flat screen TV with plenty of English channels. Breakfast was excellent with some local products. A small indoor pool is available whole day. There are nice views on the surrounding mountains. Very good value for money in the area of Sao Vicente.
Review 9:Our room had a slanted roof. So especially when you're tall, be prepared to bump your had a few times. Hard mattresses, but everywhere in Portugal this is the case. Bring earplugs for a barking dog in the neighbourhood during the night. Just to be sure; you need a car to get around.
Review 10:Nice and very quiet location. Nice livingroom and pool. Breakfast was also good. Enough parking space. Very good place to relax and to come home to after a full day hiking. Beautiful view!!!!!!
Review 11:As we stayed for 5 days we would have preferred a room that wasn't looking up the path as we like to have the windows wide open and passers by could see into the room. It wasn't really a problem.
Review 12:Beautiful location.very friendly and helpful staff. Spotlessly clean. The breakfast was very good with a different delicious homemade cake each day.
Review 13:nothing
Review 14:Cosy place, really feels like home. Offered special dinners on Saturdays - it was delicious and also nice opportunity to chat with some other guests. Since leaving early in the morning, we received a breakfast pack. The breakfast is also very good from local food mainly.
Review 15:Poor bathroom, noties of electricity accomodations. We expected a more farm-style accomodation.
Review 16:A fine place to visit the less touristic But most beautyfull Side of the island
Review 17:everything was perfect. very professional, clean and beautiful. super bed, best breakfast we had in any guesthouse. and personal is really friendly and helpful. super nice location! no problem to get there with car.
Review 18:Friendliness of owner and staff remains as highs we have come to expect. Unbelievable value for money. Easy access to Sao Vicente and the Taberna - the must go place to eat. Central location - easy to access most of the rest of the island.
Review 19:The friendliness, good parking place for a car. You need a car to stay there. Liked our room and the comfortable bed we had. It's a beautiful homey place. Enjoyed our swim in the pool and the water was nice and warm. Wonderful breakfast in the morning. Nice wood fire burning in the fireplace as it was a cool morning in Feb. when we were there. Highly recommended.
Review 20:Warm welcome by Luciana, who proudly showed a little lamb born a few days earlier. This is turismo rural at its best. But the warm swimming pool is great too :)
Review 21:You will need a car and a Sat-nav if you want to explore Madeira as we did. Whilst Sola de Bica is clearly signed, when we saw the final sign both of us looked at each other and thought 'that can't be right'. It's up a quite steep and narrow road. Nothing horrific by Madeira standards, but if you're a nervous driver you might have second thoughts ( having said that, if you're a nervous river I wouldn't recommend Madeira anyway!).
Review 22:The hotel is very centrally located and let us explore all corners of Madeira. The room was spacious, the bed large and very comfortable. Breakfast was a generous self-service buffet so we could stuff the calories in for the day ahead. The honesty bar was a nice touch, the swimming pool ideal to loosen up in after a day in the mountains, and the surrounding gardens and vegetable patch ( complete with a few politely quiet chickens, plus a sheep and her young lamb ) ticked a few more boxes. Car park was right outside just 5metres from the gate. Wi-Fi worked and seemed perfectly decent speed. There are a number of restaurants a couple of minutes away in Sao Vicente, but we went to Taberna de Sao Vicente 3 times as it was inexpensive and very pleasant. Staff were friendly and helpful. A very positive experience all round. We'd definitely go back and will recommend Solar de Bica to friends and family.
Review 23:The matras was a bit hard, but we slept well anyways.
Review 24:Me and my girlfriend really enjoyed the peacefullness of the area. Also the breakfeast was very good. Solar da Bica is a perfect place to explore the northern part of Madeira. Tip: rent a car and don't be afraid of narrow roads with hairpin corners.
Review 25:It's best to rent a car to get there. However in my opinion this is true for most of Madeira, so it's not really a "con". There's also a bus stop however I'm not sure how frequent it is.
Review 26:We stayed there outside the touristic season and we were the only people there. That, combined with very friendly people there gave the place almost an home-like feeling. The breakfast was great and mostly home-grown. In case you have a car, there is also the possibility of getting to lunch/dine close by at a short distance. On a final note, my friend's child loved the "play space" inside.
Review 27:- coffee could be stronger at breakfast - accessible only by car, I'm afraid?
Review 28:- extremely friendly staff - inside pool (and sauna for a small extra charge) - playground and toys for small kids - fireplace in the evening - breakfast
Review 29:Charming family business, great view, adorable staff, delicious breakfast (with organic vegetables directly from the garden), cosy, comfortable and clean rooms. Ideal accommodation for exploring the northern coastline.
Review 30:The place is quite far from the village and on the big hill, also bus connection to other parts of Madeira is difficult so car is a must here There is no restaurant in the hotel
Review 31:kind staff beautiful and clean room quiet place beautiful surrounding
Review 32:The manageress really looked after us from booking taxi's when requested ,organising the airport transfer and once even offering a lift into the town at the end of her shift Brilliant
Review 33:I really hate the fact, that there was only decaf coffee available during breakfast.
Review 34:Hotel is in the middle of mountains thus it offers amazing views! Breakfasts are really nice and organic. Staff is really friendly, whole place is really, really quite and comfortable.
Review 35:satellite TV did not work (only Portuguese channels)
Review 36:The owners and staff make you feel like at home. Our room had a pleasant view over the mountains. Very clean. Breakfast very good with ingredients from own ecological garden. Breakfast time 8-10, but flexible and filling up the buffet as long as you are there. We got a delicious real Espetada bbq Friday night! Hospitality bar with complementary herb tea out from the own garden. Small, but lovely indoor pool with big windows opening the view on palm trees and the garden. Well kept garden and terrace - perfect to read a book and admire the landscape in between.
Review 37:Having to drive to get evening meal.
Review 38:Could not fault the hotel, staff or location nestled in the mountains under a 10 minute drive to the coast. Lovely gardens with ample seating and a lovely indoor pool and sauna to relax in after a good walk.
Review 39:Nothing. Everything was perfect!
Review 40:It was so peaceful, quaint, comfortable and with those amazing views of the mountains! I will definitely return to spend more time. I left feeling totally revived and rested. Thank you to all the staff who were so helpful and courteous. I was shown around the little farm when I arrived which was also really lovely. I would recommend you hire a car to get here, and to explore the island. The best hidden treasures are to be found away from the tourist hotspots ;)
Review 41:Hard to find and then having to go out again for a meal.
Review 42:Good value, very friendly staff.
Review 43:Breakfast could be better
Review 44:Tranquility and silence

Review 57:The hospitality, setting, rooms and facility's are all outstanding. It is an ideal base to explore the surrounding area and island.
Review 58:None
Review 59:Beautiful location, comfortable new family apartment, tasty breakfasts and very welcoming hosts!
Review 60:Super friendly staff! We enjoyed staying for 3 nights there.
Review 61:Pros and cons of Solar da Bica? Just pros: beautiful pension with amazing view, friendly staff and endless silence :-)
Review 62:Coffee should be better! It's Portugal!! :-)
Review 63:Loved everything!
Review 64:Our room was a bit dark and lighting in the room was poor. As it's mandatory to leave the room card at the reception whenever leaving the hotel, the electricity in the room is completely cut off, including the fridge. Shower head did not fit the holder and was falling down. Shower gel in the cabin was heavily diluted with water. Poor pillows.
Review 65:Good location (also when it comes to weather), nice staff, amazing terrace with great view, swimming pool equipped with towels, shower caps, sun beds; good breakfast, noiseless fridge
Review 66:Pity there is no lunch and dinner opportunity.
Review 67:Amazing location with outstanding views. Lovely garden and stylish interior design. We loved the heated pool with sauna. Very nice staff and owner!
Review 68:Poor furnishing of the kitchen in the appartment (missing toaster, sharp knives and even chopping board). Noisy fridge.
Review 69:Quiet place with nice view to the mountains. Friendly personel, perfect service, nice garden, everything clean and sweet-smelling.
Review 70:Breathtaking location, magnificent views, polite, friendly receptionist made us feel straight away like home, indoor swimming pool, sauna...simply unforgettable experience!
Review 71:The reading light at the bed could be improved
Review 72:A very guest friendly place in a nice area, very central on the isle, very good looked after and clean, nice pool and a carefully prepared breakfast table - A place to be recommended to all people visiting Madeira
Review 73:Th return off the road to go up the lane to Solar da Bica.
Review 74:Lovely friendly and welcoming staff - great breakfasts. Facilities that we wanted were all there including the lovely swimming pool. Our third time there and it really feels like home. As an aside, the place to eat in the evening is Taberna de Sao Vicente - fabulous food and run by a delightful couple.
Review 75:This is an outstanding guesthouse/small hotel. The owner in particular was a perfect host suggesting good local walks and ensuring our stay was a pleasure throughout. The room was very comfortable and had a stunning view. Great breakfast and complimentary refreshments as well!
Review 76:Really great place to unwind. The pool is open, it's a warm 27 degrees even in winter heated from the solar panels. After a long trek this is a great place to relax. The staff are helpful, you get a tour of the house and one of the garden when you arrive and the sheep are just grazing the grass. The rooms are nice and I experienced the quietest night on Madeira here!
Review 77:no private balcony / terrace. no cooking facilities as advertised. room quite small. atmosphere a little bit too affected for this kind of accomodation. some of the items for breakfast are just average.
Review 78:location is very nice. good pool. good eggs for breakfast
Review 79:Staff very helpful and hospitable. Made sure we got an early breakfast in time for the bus. Helped us plan walk from hotel. Lovely location, quiet, tranquil, stunning views.
Review 80:When we should pay we could not do this with a credit card. Had the staff been helpful if would have been semi-ok, but they made it our problem completely. Not a nice end to our stay.
