Reviews for Chateau on the Park
Review 1:On arrival, it was later than expected due to a delayed flight. The Manager of our company mentioned that on check in the lady was very short and rude. They were tired and he wasnt expecting this reception, specially for the employee who travelled from China to be here.
Review 2:Was a lovely entrance and we paid more than we normally would for a last night stay in a lovely hotel to end our holiday. But when we saw our room we were very disappointed it was old and tired looking not at all what we expected for the price. It was at least clean but felt we were mislead with deluxe double.
Review 3:Lobby and entrance and situation were lovely.
Review 4:notsmelling aired and fresh.old furniture.no plunger coffee needs a revamp.
Review 5:the cleanliness and comfortable bed excellent welcome and attractive water feature, didnt have time for using bar or restaurant so cant comment but nice to have that availability on site.
Review 6:Just found the bed abit small & hard.Woke up with a sore neck. Not sure if because it was a cheaper room but asked for a balcony & didn't get that. Just felt room was getting a bit out-dated.
Review 7:Loved the setting. Nice & peaceful area. friendly people behind the desk. did enjoy the stay. The small touches were nice. Descent size soap, and nice toothbrush shaving packs.
Review 8:We had requested a large double bed and were given a room woth two 4ft 6in beds. Room changed as soon as we asked but it appeared no-one had read our request before we arrived.
Review 9:Excellent service and pleasant location in the park
Review 10:Medieval themed hotel with beautiful garden and feature restaurant and bar in courtyard setting. Some of rooms need updating but quality furnishings make it very comfortable.
Review 11:First impressions lasts....Unfortunately the staff who checked us in ( Kartika? spelling) when we arrived was neither friendly or helpful. Not free with information of the layout of the hotel, on where to park or how to get around the city, even when prompted. Did not even ask if we had any luggage or needed help with anything. Quite unapproachable that we did not want to ask her anything more.
Review 12:Beautiful hotel with lovely gardens. If you enjoy walking the botanic gardens and the Avon river are not far away, and so is the city centre. Our room was on the ground floor and the sliding doors open up to the car park which was convenient to unload & load your luggage. The room was fairly clean and the TV archaic, but added a certain charm to the room. The room was basic but comfortable.
Review 13:Getting a little old but still clean and in the middle of a refurb.
Review 14:We booked a family room and the hotel upgraded us to two rooms at no extra charge. Great value.
Review 15:The old girl is tired and it is wonderful to see the new owners have employed contractors to rejuvenate the old girl We first stayed at the property in 1979 when it was called the Chateaux Commodore
Review 16:Great location Excellent grounds Quiet
Review 17:My grandchildren didn;t like leaving :)
Review 18:My daughter and I were really impressed with the petite lady with the white hair. We went into the restaurant for dinner and she served us. In the morning we went in for breakfast and she was their. She was very friendly, welcomed us with a smile and was absolutely lovely, even had a joke with us. Excellent service. Grandchildren loved the swimming pool.
Review 19:Everything interior in need of refurbishment.
Review 20:The English garden scores more the 10. The exterior building architecture and the beautifully manicured garden overpower the interior so much that disappointment arose.
Review 21:No reception staff on arrival had to find a porter. Needs a big upgrade of facilities, old and tiered (even had a CRT TV that didn't function very well). "star" rating over states what to expect
Review 22:nice walk over the park to the CBD
Review 23:Nightmare in the New Zealand. False fire alarm in the night without any explanation. Really suffer from this. Great noise when staying in the room. Worst experience.
Review 24:The staff in the restaurant were quite grumpy and not very helpful, nearly appeared we were inconveniencing them by eating there. There was no gym and the off site gym was closed to hotel members on public holiday. The bar is very dark and the whole hotel is under major renovations so not very comfortable environment if you're looking for a relaxing stay
Review 25:The female Maitre'd in the restaurant on our first night's stay was horrible. We walked out before ordering and went across town for a meal. So not good for the Chateaux. If we hadn't booked a package deal including breakfast with booking.com, we would not have gone back into the restaurant but fortunately the breakfast staff were on to it and organised.
Review 26:great location for cricket lovers, lovely pool but a spa would help fr those cold days,
Review 27:Personnel was not genuinely friendly. Staff in the reception and restaurant are just trying to do their job without smile.
Review 28:Very good location and breakfast was good.
Review 29:Needs a little updating! But understand they are in the middle of refurbishment
Review 30:Very clean and comfortable rooms. Great parking and very central to the city and shopping.
Review 31:This hotel gave us compact queen studio .. Which is very very small .. No microwave no kitchenette .. In room besides bed no space to walk also .. Chk out was 10 am .. Which is not informed and I chk out at 11 am .. They penalised us for their lack of communication .. :(
Review 32:Location
Review 33:Nothing about this hotel was 5 star. Also we were woken by very noisy workmen on the roof.
Review 34:Lovely gardens but the rest of the hotel is a bit faded and our room was dark. Nice position opposite the park but busy main road to cross first.
Review 35:Clean, spacious rooms with nice bathrooms (very good shower). Staff is also very friendly and helpful. Location is close to the park and city center is just on the other side of this park.
Review 36:We had to park on the road as the car park is used for all facilities (restaurant, accommodation, conference etc). Was very disappointed in this considering there price we paid!
Review 37:Very comfortable bed!! Fabulous restaurant, very good breakfast.
Review 38:Well nothing much to complain but unlike most hotel there is no water provided.
Review 39:The hotel is designed beautifully with lovely flowers planted on all available space.
Review 40:The allocated room was tired looking and the TV was an old CRT: time for an upgrade, which seems to be already in progress in other parts of the hotel.
Review 41:Gorgeous setting of gardens and pools. Close proximity to Hagley Park.
Review 42:Shower over bath - my elderly mother couldn't shower while there. Room was dark with no sun
Review 43:The beautiful setting, lovely garden view from restaurant, inside water feature. Awesome food in the restaurant. Friendly, helpful staff. Quiet and restful
Review 44:We have stayed here before but the consistency is poor. We have stayed at deluxe prices and had no toiletries and a very sub standard room. There is a very marked difference in rooms. Sometimes we have had fabulous service and great rooms and other times paid more money and had poor service and substandard rooms.
Review 45:Nothing, will be interested in visiting after the upgrade/rebuild is complete.
Review 46:Quiet. Until staff used a vacuum cleaner outside the room door at 8.15 am
Review 47:The guest laundry had one working washer and no dryers functioning. They need to replace these machines.
Review 48:A beautifully maintained property, considerable restoration still being done post-quake but effort put into making guests comfortable.
Review 49:The hotel was located near Hagley Park and the town center was within walking distance. Friendly, lovely staff and they were very helpful, especially the bartender!
Review 50:Room Cleaning not good .dirty carpets . Dirt and dust inside wardrobe and on window sills . dated décor but in process of updating. Poor room lighting for reading. Restaurant Food for breakfast and Dinner very average quality food. Convention catering style rather than a true restaurant..
Review 51:Spacious resort style hotel well located outside City. Beautiful garden setting.
Review 52:There was a wedding on during our stay which made parking difficult when we returned late evening, only just found a space on the other side of the hotel from our room and it is a big site. The entrance signage could be improved
Review 53:Location is great once you find the entrance. We walked across the park into the city, a lovely walk. Rooms and facilities are excellent. Very modern and luxurious. Brilliant value at a good price.
Review 54:Being a hotel meant long corridors & lack of cosiness & welcome. The hotel was still being repaired &/or refurbished but though it was slightly inconvenient for me 3 weeks ago, it looked as though it should be fine for future guests.
Review 55:I liked its situation being a pleasant walk from the city centre. I liked the site, green & leafy. My room was spacious, clean & comfortable. It was also excellent value for money!
Review 56:N/A
Review 57:Location was great. Staff there but unobtrusive and helpful. Brilliant surroundings. Loved the gardens. Even although it is a large facility it still felt private. The room we were in required an upgrade but it was comfortable enough.
Review 58:Our room was very cramped and small , hard beds and an old TV and jug . The decor and furniture was old !
Review 59:The restaurant was great . Staff were lovely. Gardens and grounds well maintained and beautiful.
Review 60:Would prefer separate shower not over bath.
Review 61:Beautiful gardens and setting and excellent location. Staff were kind and welcoming. Plenty of free parking a real bonus in a city.
Review 62:Very strong smell in the room - over powering. Address on the website we used was for park terrace but there was no entrance there. Had to come round the side street
Review 63:Room size, restaurant, swimming pool and location
Review 64:My bookings were not correct i was booked into a single room with my male bussiness partner . We had booked a twin share room . I had 30min from arriving to get to my meeting and was not arriving back untill 11pm . the disk staff was not very helpfull
Review 65:Wendy and Whane sorted out our rooms shifted all our gear to a new room so we didn,t have to worry about it . That was great to come back to our room with every thing sorted .
Review 66:As I said I did like the room but it could do with updating.
Review 67:The food was and excellent. The staff were very helpful, welcoming and pleasant. The room is clean and comfortable.
Review 68:Have stayed before was disappointed this trip it seems to now cater for the "bulk" coach tour traveler, used to be a top notch place / service not any more. Very basic pillows, did not even remove the rubbish obviously left to be cleared
Review 69:Easy to get to
Review 70:Yes with changes happening with the upgrading their information was not correct on the website and they didn't reply back to my special requests. And the room we booked was not what we wanted be they sorted out any problems we had very quickly the best way they could. They are going to be checking their website and information on other website that they share information (ie Booking.com).
Review 71:Beautiful scenery with the gardens and the water features. Nice location easy access to Westfield Shopping Centre
Review 72:Menu in the restaurant very repetitive, especially as I stayed 6 nights. One of the senior restaurant staff very abrupt (was in restaurant 3 nights of our stay). Should have been made aware of building work going on, on the website.
Review 73:Location was very good. Reception staff very helpful.
Review 74:The room needs a makeover. I know renovations are underway but this should be made clear. The television is last century's. Not much needed to change this.
Review 75:Breakfast in garden room
Review 76:Five acres of beautifully kept gardens surround this hotel, and so with the rooms located back from the road, there was no traffic noise to be heard. Gorgeous outdoor swimming pool that would be great to enjoy during summer. Good sized bathroom, and such a rare treat for there to be a bath included. The gutsy hot shower was the best we've had during our South Island travels over the past 10 days. This facility is currently being refurbished and with such good bones, the place will be simply stunning when the décor is given a more up-to-date look. We would definitely like to stay again!
Review 77:The bath was very slippery, I would prefer it had a couple of no slip patches on the bottom
Review 78:Gardens are beautiful. Loved being able to fully open the windows and smell ththe gardens
Review 79:We booked the day before arriving in Christchurch and got the room for $98 .00 a night --- a fraction of the price we would pay at a mediocre Motel . Beautiful gardens and very picturesque restaurant .
Review 80:No bad experiences, we had seen in past photos there used to be a Spa pool, but alas the pool was heated to 25 degrees so that was great.
Review 81:Chateau on the Park was a great place to stay for two friends visiting Christchurch on a weekend away. Great facilities and lovely, pleasant comfortable room. We enjoyed drinks at The Den as well as the Room Service Menu, both were great. We also went for a refreshing dip in the pool, which im sure is bliss in high summer ! The garden and setting was all very beuatiful and well maintained. We liked the historical feel of the place and that its not trendy or too hip and has the feel of how an old hotel should be.
Review 82:The staff, particularly the front of house on reception are quite poor- they seem that they are very fed up with their job, like every thing is too much hassle and that they would rather be somewhere else. The rooms are usually ok, quite basic but usually clean and fit for purpose. The room on this occasion was poor, for 1 person- 3 single beds were in the room which were very cheap and very uncomfortable. The staff on the desk the next day didn't ask how my night was or how I was- they kept their heads down and asked for money. No southern charm. I wouldn't be back given the service at other cheaper hotels.
Review 83:The location is great- the proximity to the park and the gardens cannot be faulted.
Review 84:At time of booking, requested a disability, wheelchair friendly room. It took two room changes at time of booking in for this to happen. Extremely poor disability facilities. Cannot, will not recommend this hotel for disabled people.
Review 85:The food was incredibly good. Expensive but good.
Review 86:Not that it was a bad experience. The rooms have been heavily discounted as the hotel is under renovation. I think you need to realise that there is no lift and you may need to carry you cases up 3 flights of stairs. I think it will be a lovely hotel when finished and I would stay there again when done.
Review 87:The staff were just lovely especially the bar manager (I think it was Rheen, the chap who was working on Sat 17/10) who was very friendly. The food was good also. Comfortable beds and very quiet.
Review 88:Receptionist tried to overcharge me. Luckily I had printed my booking form when I made the booking, so they honoured my one room at a discounted rate.
Review 89:Great location. Handy to town.
Review 90:Reconstruction site. Needs to be updated and seismically reinforced for peace in mind
Review 91:Beautiful setting in the park. Mature trees and flowerbeds. Very quiet and tranquil .
Review 92:I love that the staffs are so helpful. Very clean and comfortable. Relaxed environment and a place to wind down after a hard day in meetings. Food was very devine
Review 93:Some of the old things need up grading like the drawers, curtains etc.
Review 94:Staff were good and the general establishment was good considering what they went through.
Review 95:Not a lot - they are in the process of refurbishing and the rooms are fine , but a little dated and presume this will be addressed. Slightly slow check in with my Booking.com reference and they trying to see that was the correct rate.
Review 96:Lovely setting very pretty gardens. Quiet at night. Very comfortable bed. Very good restaurant and staff excellent in there . All in all a great place to stay , convenient , quiet , free parking.
Review 97:I expected twin room but got one bed room at checking in and explained I couldn't chose twin room even I entered 2 people stay at the reception then I got triple room instead as the room type was not displayed in website at the time of the booking.
Review 98:Had heaps of dangerous spots heading to our room We thought the black plastic on the floor was VERY slippery as it had been wet outside n nearly slipped over
Review 99:Good location n great staff
Review 100:Everything. I've stayed at a few places in Chch now & would have to say this is the best. Parking, fast wifi, room service, its beautiful location private, close to everything, staff really good, & has a sml gym rooms are more than enough & quiet. Impressed I wont stay anywhere else now for the value of your money. WOW
Review 101:No location map and no signage for rooms # 16X. Understaffed reception counter. Receptionist was busy directing guests to their rooms. Works were going on within the hotel, this should have been mentioned in the booking site. Also bicycles were no longer avaiable contrary to informmatiob on booking site.
Review 102:The fantastic landscaped garden n flowers.
Review 103:Some of thank you place is dated
Review 104:I asked for a bath (I thought I had ordered on room with one) and the staff (at check in) put us in a suite at no extra charge. We were very happy
Review 105:Strategically located in Riccarton, many restaurants and cafes nearby. Only 20 minutes easy walk through beautiful Hagley Park/Bontanic Garden to city center. Alternately, hotel shutte bus is available. The restaurant served delicious food.
Review 106:This was like a time warp. After a week in a campervan I was looking forward to watch some Rugby World Cup. We paid extra for a good hotel room as a result. I could not believe it when there was only a 20 inch CRT tube TV in the room. I have not even seen one of these for 5 years so the thing just be 20 years old. Quakes or not there is no excuse in 2015 for this. TV is not even broadcast for these things any more. When we turned it on my daughters screamed from a high pitch noise coming from this antique that we could not hear. When I asked for a solution I was told that was the only option. So we got stretched out, high pitch noisy TV, unhappy kids and of course the drunken noise and loud talking that you get in Hotel hallway between 12 and 2am. Could not sleep half the night. So if you are a family don''t stay here. Stay in a cheap motel on a noisy road and you will probably get to watch the rugby and get more sleep than staying here.
Review 107:Great breakfast. Bathroom a good size and clean. Staff were as helpful as they could be.
Review 108:The breakfast is expensive and the bar needs to have windows to open to the outside to enjoy the beautiful areas more. The whole bar area seemed stuffy.
Review 109:The gardens and views. Entrance is impressive and staff were very friendly. The meal in the dining room was the best I had all through our holiday in NZ.
Review 110:As the building is undergoing some renovations there was a little bit of banging noise around 9am but nothing too disturbing given I was already awake.
Review 111:Bed was comfy/warm. Bathroom large and clean. A staff member, Kirtika, was very helpful at helping me extend my stay by one night and to remain in the same room. I also ordered a meal from room service and it was very nice and prompt. The hotel is opposite the lovely Hagley Park as well as walking distance to some cafes and restaurants, a bonus on both counts.
Review 112:There is a level if disruption in the hotel at present given renovations. The return of the lift will be welcome to those of us who prefer upper floors.
Review 113:I liked the quiet upper floor room and the garden setting. The lunch staff were down to earth and pleasant and delivered good service.
Review 114:solo traveller, room had 3 single beds, very uncomfortable, feet fell off bed and wobly. Had to wait to be seated for meals, staff weren't attentive, faster system needed for breakfast when on business.Hotel undergoing revamp so understanding of inconveniences. Rooms dated need of make over.
Review 115:beautiful location and gardens
Review 116:Lugging our bags up and down two flights of stairs unassisted as life being repaired poor. Room very outdated and expensive compared to our other accomodation
Review 117:Room was comfortable but decor a little dated.
Review 118:Lovely gardens with outside pool and good restaurant. Staff were friendly and helpful. It was good to be able to hire a car from the hotel.
Review 119:Great value for money especially the included buffet breakfast. They are obviously undergoing a major renovation (didn't disrupt our stay at all) and it will be lovely when finished. Our room was still modern and clean. Beautiful gardens.
Review 120:We have an account with CotP and I have been staying for business trips for over 3 years now. Would be great if it was noted that all payments are to be charged to the credit card number provided. Each time I stay, they want details of my own business card or want me to pay up front etc. When I arrived on this trip, I had to explain again that we have an account and yet they charged the credit card 'to make sure it worked'. I said that I'd still have food to go it for the 3 days so it would've been better to charge at the end.
Review 121:Workmen on our balcony in the early morning and asking us if they could be there and scaffolding and cutting of trees when we were trying to shower and dress before we left was a little invasive
Review 122:The WiFi is slooowww...quicker to use own data. The property is also looking a bit tired, but a refurbishment was underway, so fingers crossed...
Review 123:Service was very good, as was the room service dinner menu (our selections, at least).
Review 124:I was disappointed to find I had an outside room facing carpark and road way, quite noisy sometimes from upstairs. Tap in bathroom difficult to operate.
Review 125:Being so handy to everything I planned, great position just far enough away from the City and near all the main roads for trips and Airport access. I really enjoyed Garry the cat.
Review 126:I first stayed in this hotel in 1975 so I have a sentimental attachment. But I paid $200 for a pretty standard room. I have to say there is better value elsewhere in Chch for this money. On my view a a a constant traveller the room was worth around $150.
Review 127:Garden lovely. Pleasant Bar
Review 128:When I checked in I got my room key and went into my room and someone else was already standing in there (originally gave that person the wrong key), so I had to get a different room - which was different to the one I booked. Also I could hear the cleaners pretty early in the morning in the hallway.
Review 129:Huge bed and plenty of space in the room, and free WIFI!
Review 130:Room was way outdated and dirty, TV was a thing from the 80's and only showed pay-per-view movies (no TV channels) and the meals, $40+ for a 200g steak seriously, so didn't eat there.
Review 131:Supper fast internet, friendly staff, nice front foyer area with lounge area and gas fire.
Review 132:I think that the wifi network could be improved a little bit as it was really hard to pick up from our room.
Review 133:The staff were friendly, the hotel management went out of their way to accomadate our situations at the time and over all was a really nice place to come back to at the end of the day.
