Reviews for Che Lagarto Hostel Ilha Grande
Review 1:While cleaning was regular, too many cockroaches and insects in the rooms. Probley due to holes in walls and doors
Review 2:Theme'd nights, view of the ocean
Review 3:Everything was great!
Review 4:The double rooms are amazing - small but with everything you need: clean bathroom with warm shower, comfy double bed, wardrobe, TV (!), and an amazing hammock on the balcony. Plus a sea view!
Review 5:The internet access was practically non-existent! Friends mentioned that is was like this in previous times as well (so this seems not to be a temporary issue). It should not be difficult to install a proper WiFi router, so people don't have to waste hours trying to connect to the internet to write a two sentence e-mail.
Review 6:The view from the deck/balcony is superb.
Review 7:The dorms were very dirty and humid. My stuffs kept this moist smell even after we left until the end of our trip. The shower cold. I found a cockroach in my bed and a some others every night in the room.
Review 8:The location is really amazing! Also there is a very nice bar/club is very close to the Che Lagarto. The staff is young and very friendly. The ambiance in the hostel is very nice!
Review 9:There is wifi, but the signal is a bit weak, so the second building (where the double rooms are located) gets no internet. Also, not sure if it was an oversight, or I was supposed to ask, but no towel provided. The walk to the hostel itself is very pleasant through the beach, but for someone with a bigger suitcase it might not be so pleasant.
Review 10:The location right over the ocean is unbeatable. Stayed in the superior double room, and each room has an outside hammock. Very nice bar/lounge area, with caiprinhas and beer, as well as breakfast in the morning (compared to similar places, very good). The hostel is located right alongside the trail to Lopez Mendez beach - highly recommended!
Review 11:DID NOT GET ANY SLEEP 2 NIGHTS RUNNING DUE TO LATE (INTO EARLY HOURS) PARTIES AND DRUNK HOSTEL FOLKS. INCLUDED PEOPLE TRYING TO GET INTO OUR PRIVATE APPARTMENT...NO CONTROL OF NOISE AFTER 10PM AT ALL.
Review 12:SUPERB BAY LOCATON
Review 13:the huge amount of bugs i find in my room but was because the other guys wanted to have the window open
Review 14:i really liked the place, one of the best at the island and the staff always try to help us with everything
Review 15:We were put into the annex building, our shower didnt work and when it did it was cold. Everything was damp, including the sheets and mattress's. Cockroaches. The beds were wooden and old and felt like they were going to collapse when the top person moved. For 2 out of the 4 days we had no water. The hostel doesn't provide food so you have to walk into the main town.
Review 16:Good view across bay. Nice atmosphere to make friends.
Review 17:We missed scrambled eggs for breakfast ;)
Review 18:We really liked quite everything about this hostel! It seems very young and modern. Surfer-style, right at the beach, wake up with the sound of the waves.. :) The view from the rooms and from the whole hostel over the sea is just stunning!! Very good and fresh breakfast! Every day the beautiful rooms are cleaned (which feels like in a hotel). Friendly and funny staff...everyone is always welcome for a lot of activities they offer :) We've been to many hostels before. This is one of our absolute favorites! We hope to come back soon. Thank you so much for the wonderful days :)
Review 19:An incredible disillusion!!!Not enough space in rooms, staff doesn't really care about you, We had to wait for almost anything : check in/cooking/washing/find a seat for eating/check out (We almost didn'tu catch the return boat.. the 2nd day we had to change of room without any good reason and the key didn't Work.. Finally, only the reception was clean, kitchen really dirty, insects in rooms and in commun area..we also had to pay at the beginning and after they asked us everyday to pay for the room!we had to justify each time and wait for a confirmation.. an hostel's brand created to be rentable, that's it! Chupameloshuevosboludo!
Review 20:Point of view, in front of the sea, closed from the beginning of trilha da praia Lopez mendes..
Review 21:Noisy neighbours up until 5.30am and the neighbour slept in the hammock outside my room all night, very noisy.
Review 22:Private room on level 1 had a great view with hammock outside my room.
Review 23:The location is good although a decent and nice beach nearby is missing! You have to walk quite bit through the sand or have to know that you can walk on a path behin the beach. The staff is trying but not very hard! When we arrived they seemed as if they were disturbed within their chatting about whatever. They were not capable to communicate in english which I kind of expect and I am not english myself. So communication is pretty bad as soon as you have issues. And we had those: - creditcard system didn't work for payment which is bad cause there is no ATM on that Island and our cash was settled for food and stuff, not for paying the hostel. If I hadn't insisted that they need to arrange it we would have to go back to Angra to get more money!!! - no working WIFI and they don't bother to tell you! - toilet flush didn't work (was arranged to work very soon) and sheets weren't "clean" when we arrived. Staff wanted to tell us that it was our fault although we have just entered the room. - private bathroom with NO water for one evening/night/morning! You couldn't reach anyone who speeks english or understands sign language and there where no spare shared bathrooms or what so ever. - breakfast buffet isn't secured from bird-attacks!
Review 24:The breakfast was ok (aside from the bird-attacks on the food). Location is nice and close to the Villa do Abrao which gives you the opportunity to get there quickly and grab some food or so.
Review 25:Sheets were stained and we asked for new ones and they responded with "on the island it's hard to get stains out" and didn't give us a replacement. Shower didn't have hot water either. Breakfast was pretty mediocre too. It's cheap though and fine for somewhere to crash for a night or two if you're on a budget.
Review 26:Right on the beach and also has its own pier so you can get dropped off! Opened our bedroom door to a beautiful view of the bay. Friendly and helpful staff - they recommended some yummy restaurants.
Review 27:Because the weather was not so good there was no electricity for a whole day until they turned on a generator (that also means no charging your camera/phones, no wifi and cold shower) .. I stayed 4 days and this happened on three of them :D
Review 28:Wonderful view, really nice stuff (especially the chef), good music in the evening, good caipirinhas, fresh cooked food every evening for a less price, very clean (cleaningladies were also cleaning the floors until 11 or 12pm), the hostel is right next to a pier so you don't have to walk a lot with all your stuff
Review 29:Wifi was not the best and not available in our room.
Review 30:Amazing spot to stay! Great location and really clean rooms. We stayed in a private double room, which was a little quieter than the hostel rooms with our own hammock which was an added bonus.
Review 31:Bathroom: Toilet was broken and there were no places to hang clothes and towel.
Review 32:Location is perfect, with a nice deck in front of the sea. Members of staff were very helpful and kind. The fact that the hostel had a direct transfer connecting with their branch in the city of Rio made the logistics much easier.
Review 33:Very loud, every night there was a party in the common area with loud music from the bar (played by the staff) that goes on till after midnight, even though there are many signs to keep silence after 11 PM
Review 34:Nice terrace, nice bar
Review 35:Nothing at all a 5* place at a great price
Review 36:Extremely clean place, the Brazilian lady responsible of cleaning does her work throughout the day. Really dedicated. Great Argentinian frontdesk staff that will walk the extra mile to make your stay enjoyable. Superb location next to the sea...even there is a wooden deck over the water
Review 37:We really had no expectation that we would be staying in a room that was moldy, damp, poorly lighted, and just generally felt unclean. The cereal in the morning had ants in it. The breakfast was extremely limited. The atmosphere in the evening was good; if you are in your 20s. The patio was nice. We would never stay there again and nor would we ever recommend it.
Review 38:Top bunk was inches from the ceiling, we couldnt sit upright and could barely turn, head got banged constantly. No information displayed on what was happening at night on the island each day (beach parties etc.), its a quiet place so would be helpful to know whats on when and where for something to do in the evenings, good kitchen available but the cleaner is constantly is around the kitchen interfering when you are cooking, shes lovely and trying to help but its actually disruptive, we had no portugese to explain and she had no english, the bathrooms were not cleaned often during a five night stay so it was dirty, no shared showers so you have to wait
Review 39:I was a solo traveller and this was the only hostel I found difficult to be sociable, was a strange vibe this may of been the time I went, not directly the hostels fault.
Review 40:The location was perfect, the hostel organised a lot of the tours. Breakfast was good. The shared dorm for 8 was the best room with the view looking out at the entire town and bay.
Review 41:bedding and beds are a little tattie Breakfast was pretty limited with jam or butter on bread or cake... could do with eggs or cold cuts.
Review 42:Location and party vibe
Review 43:Really noisy, careless staff, rotten food under my bed, wifi doesn't work ever, people partying from 3pm to 6am, AC stops in the middle of the night.
Review 44:The location is excellent.
Review 45:It's a hundred metres away from the "city" centre and you have to walk along the shore line to reach the hostel. Leave your shoes at home and get your sandals covered with beach sand
Review 46:There is a superb ocean view, rooms are clean and stuff are good even though most of them badly speak portuguese. It has a good vibe and guets spend all night long chating and drinking on the deck
Review 47:All other rooms had fly wire, mine didn't. All other rooms had hammock, mine didn't. The spare bed was covered in water from leak in ceiling.
Review 48:Breakfast is only a couple of kinds of fruit and bread, and two types of sugary cereal, with juice and coffee. Nothing hot is necessary, but it would be nice to have some sliced meats and cheeses and whole grain choices for the breads and cereals.
Review 49:Visited in April and stayed in a private room. It was clean, spacious enough, and a great value overall - less than half of what I would consider more or less comparable properties. The location is right at the end of the main beach (on the beach), so very easy access, with a 10 minute walk to the main bar and restaurant strip. The view of the harbour in the mornings in incredible - a great backdrop for breakfast. The staff is friendly and helpful and eager to make things right if something isn't.
Review 50:The staff of the hostel consists of native Spanish speakers. This means, If you don't speak Spanish, you might have big difficulties to communicate and get some help. They barely speak English and Portuguese. The internet is very slow or doesn't work at all. You need to pay extra for the towels.
Review 51:The hostel was nice, with a great view and location. The owner of the hostel definitely have had a great idea and imagination. The breakfast was ok.
Review 52:How to get there if you're carrying luggage. The hostel should have their own ferry service from the docks to the facility.
Review 53:A pleasant stay all in all, with a friendly staff who went out of their way to address issues with the lack of water in the restrooms. The location of the hostel despite the fact it was a bit difficult to get there with our luggage.
Review 54:For couple of days there was no water in the hostel (in shower, toilets) The wifi was good when it workes but unfortunately it wasn't very reliable
Review 55:The location is beautiful, by the sea and close to lovely beaches Breakfast was nice The stuff was friendly and helpful
Review 56:- STAFF: unmotivated, bored, unfriendly, uncommunicative. It seemed, as if they don´t want to work. - WIFI: didn´t work for most of the time, because there were too many people. We had to use the neighbour´s WIFI (Che Legarto WIFI itself is not working). - Dirty Rooms and kitchen (many dead insects) - Price/Service ratio was really bad ( 25 USD pN pP) - Air condition startet only in the evening (which is okay when you spend your whole day at the beach) CHE LAGARTO: as you can see, most of the people criticize your staff and your wifi. I think that it is not so hard to replace/improve that. You should do something, because at the moment the situation is impertinent.
Review 57:- Location was close to the beach - Breakfast was really good for a hostel, but for that price ...? Expectable for that price
Review 58:Breakfasts were average to below average. Bed linen was old and rooms were not overly clean. Wifi didn't connect at all. Staff were friendly enough but not overly welcoming. In all below expectations as per previous reviews.
Review 59:I really thought the location was excellent. One or two of the staff were friendly enough but not always the most helpful. Great views and good to have Access to a kitchen and internet. Connections to boats was very good.
Review 60:The staff wasn't welcoming at all, nothing can be asked as a favor (where to go, what to book, where to eat..) without they being annoyed because you're not paying for the infos. The rooms are damp and the air conditionning doesn't always work, the sheets take forever to arrive, and the hostel is filled with rats and coackroaches... Not the best experience!
Review 61:The location was good, the island beautiful! (But that's not the hostel!!!)
Review 62:Wifi and a bit stuff. too many dogs who bark almost all the time...
Review 63:View view view and that delicious breakfast with a view! Friendly atmosphere, people who stayed there and it was super clean (except bathrooms but at least there was always hot water and bathrooms looks like new but still unfinished). Close to the beach, far from noisy places, comfortable beds and delicious food that Mrs. Victoria prepare for guestes!
Review 64:The bathroom needed some renovations, the breakfast could have been more varied, and the wifi didn't work at all
Review 65:Friendly staff, offer of meals in the evening, good place to meet other travellers
Review 66:Staff were unfriendly/unhelpful - knew nothing about the island. So expensive for what it is. The only decent element is the bar. I'd recommend staying in a more comfortable/cheaper pousada and coming here to drink
Review 67:Ok location
Review 68:In Che Legarto we booked private room but the photos of our room in the reservation totally differed from room we got. Manager of hostel told us that they present photos only of the best room and they have only one such a room. Difference was big - size, bed and equipment. Room was also not cleaned. There was a lot of sand on the floor and in the shower. Additionally everything in the room was damp so after stay we had to dry all clothes. I spend 2 nights in Che Legarto and 2 nights in other hostel on Ilha Grande. These second was much better and even cheaper.
Review 69:Too small kitchen & difficult access to it in the evening.
Review 70:Sea side location, breakfast on the terrace with a beautiful view, very friendly cook Veronica.
Review 71:Like has been mentioned. Internet is close to unusable. Both on wifi and on the public computers. Understandable on a remote island. But other hostels there have decent connections. Staff is sometimes a bit unengaged in solving general issues. Overall. The positives outdo the negatives. And i found disconnecting from the web quite nice :)
Review 72:Amazing view from common areas and some rooms... five star hotel class really. Perfect location 5-10 munute walk down the beach for boat taxis. Good value Clean, fresh and working beds; sheets; and toilets!
Review 73:Internet connection was very bad, the beds unconfortable and the staff from the reception was pretty inefficient.
Review 74:Nice spot with a beautiful view. The barkeeper was great and his Caipirinhas delicious.
Review 75:Being located at the end of the beach means you have to walk along the sand to get to it, which is annoying for a couple of reasons. one, obviously its not the easiest to walk on sand, especially if you are carrying big bags - and good luck if you have a case and not a rucksack. Secondly it means you are constantly bringing sand into the hostel and your room. This consequently means that the hostel is not the cleanest it could be as they are constantly having to sweep up sand. It is a little bit more expensive than other places but it's not too bad. Be warned there are two locations for Che Largato on the island, the dorms are at the end of the beach and the private rooms are on the main streets. Know where you are going so you are not walking back and forth through the sand with all your bags in the searing heat like i was ;)
Review 76:As mentioned in the title one of the best things about this place is the dining area. Because it is located on the beach they have got a spot that sits out right over the water and looks down the beach. It's location is also right at the start of the nature trail that leads to the famous Lopes Mendes Beach. Breakfast was good and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Every night they cook meals for the hostel, which is good if you dont want to cook, but bad if you do as it means the kitchen is shut from 6pm. The price of the dinners i thought was a bit steep - nothing too bad, just more than you could pay else where or if you cooked yourself. The place is kept fairly clean and you feel safe there. Of course you feel safe everywhere on Ilha Grande. It is also supposed to be the main party place to go on the island, although I didnt spend much time there and never noticed any real parties which was fine by me as i wasnt there for that.
Review 77:Only about 15cm between the top bed and the ceiling.
Review 78:Except for the occasional cockroach relatively clean...
Review 79:Loud music all day very busy
Review 80:Lazy staff, filthy conditions
Review 81:Location, set up
Review 82:the location, the place to take breakfast in front of the sea
Review 83:Bad breakfast , however kitchen is open from 3pm to 10pm for cooking
Review 84:Great Stuff Amazing Location An heaven island
Review 85:Bathroom cleanliness.
Review 86:The location. Right on top of the beach. Great view. Nice terrase. Very friendly staff.
Review 87:Great location, terrasse on the water, great people, clean, cheap caipirinhas!
Review 88:perfect location!
Review 89:Bebidas do bar quentes
Review 90:Area comum
Review 91:Loved the location Great atmosphere
Review 92:I booked 3 days and so far stayed 3 weeks. This place is amazing and the staff is awesome. I don't know if I'm ever leaving.
Review 93:Great terrace with great view, 1 locker per bunk, clean
Review 94:-Great location by the sea -Very nice atmosphere -Fantastic people
Review 95:Needs more cleanliness
Review 96:Friendly staff. Parties at night. Breakfast is ok for the money you're paying.
Review 97:The people from the hostel are the best!
Review 98:Horrible Wi Fi and the staff at the reception wasn't good at all.
Review 99:Location was awesome.
Review 100:There isn't sinalizations until the hostel.
Review 101:The building
Review 102:Only running hot water was shower and had to get the flow right for that to work
Review 103:Close to water and beachfront restaurants
Review 104:The view, friendly international employees, the location, the balcony with the view, perfect
Review 105:Breakfast was a little poor but I guess you get what you you pay for
Review 106:Location is great and the staff were top notch
Review 107:Wifi funktionierte nicht Sehr hellhörig!!! Sehr sehr hellhörig. Frühstück war nicht gross, fast keine Auswahl
Review 108:Es war sehr günstig. Punkt.....
Review 109:staff, facilities, terrace, location
Review 110:Was a lovely place but make sure you specify to stay in same room as friends because you technically only book a bed.
Review 111:dirty
Review 112:Rooms were awful. I was really scared to sleep there. The mosquitos and bugs were biting me. It"s horrible !
Review 113:The stuff is helpful and nice.
Review 114:The noise late at night, every night.
Review 115:Location. Breakfast.
Review 116:Poor variety of beer.
Review 117:Location
Review 118:you have to watch your bank acount. I've paid twice....
Review 119:Jeronimo tour excellent. Nice helpful staff. Good crowd of people
Review 120:Não recebi novos fundamentos para travesseiros
Review 121:Beds weren't the best
Review 122:Staff and hammocks
Review 123:15min to the center/ market, nothing to play (pool table, cards,..), wifi barely works
Review 124:Nice view, quiet spot, nice ppl
Review 125:Perfect place, with breathtaking views, clean and comfortable. A bit impersonnal and the breakfast could be better. But hard to expect more for the reasonable price.
Review 126:Terrible internet connection Breakfast inclouded a lot of passion fruit, but not inclouded ham or cheese
Review 127:Amazing view from the room Clean bathroom and room Breakfast in the balcony next to the ocean.. so pleasing :)
Review 128:Many of the staff barely spoke English which you'd kind if thinkwould be a requirement for a hostel, since there are backpackers fromall over the world. They didn't have a proper luggage storage whichwas secure, bags were just left in the lobby before checkin/aftercheckout which felt a bit unsafe.
Review 129:Location was very convenient from the boat, bathrooms were clean andmany social activities (every night) which was great. Beautiful viewsover the water also. Overall I would recommend this hostel. It is nextdoor to another hostel (whose name I forget) but the bathrooms at theother place were just foul and disgusting so I'd definitelyrecommend Che Lagarto over its adjacent hostel.
The Fine Print
