Reviews for YHA Christchurch

Review 1:The fact that I couldn't stay longer..

Review 2:Excellent place to stay.. I'd highly recommend your place to everyone.. People are wonderful and Ciuntry is friggin amazing..

Review 3:Proximity to botanical gardens and I-site, and Canterbury Museum. Walking distance to Re-Start Mall and centre of city. Airport pickup service. Friendly, obliging staff on reception.

Review 4:Nothing in particular

Review 5:Counter staff helpful and friendly. Bathrooms were nice and clean and the communal kitchen was well-equipped, clean and open all hours!

Review 6:The beds in the dormitory were pretty cramped. Suggestion: The movable cabinets or tables should be removed to make space.

Review 7:I had a free BBQ session during Christmas there! It was memorable! The staff were very nice and warm! Thank you!

Review 8:A hair dryer is only in the first floor. In the second floor, there is no hair dryers in the bathrooms.

Review 9:Comfy bed. Friendly staff. Very clean room and bathroom. The kichen and dishes there are also clean. Free wifi is comfortable to use.

Review 10:There are 2 staffs who accommodated us when we arrived. The asian guy was good but the other one was I guess "kinda racist". He never smiled and when we asked him he was not really helpful. Is that because were asians? Not a good thing in the reception. One thing, there are no specific parking for guests. Therefore, YHA is only good for backpackers not for people travelling with a car.

Review 11:YHA Christchurch is located in an "okay" part of the city but still accessible to facilities. The room is really good and clean. The one that we had was really good for group of friends travelling together.

Review 12:Only downside was room at back of hostel, adjacent to the outside barbecue area so quite noisy at night with people talking till it got dark, but generally quiet after 10.30pm,

Review 13:Close to botanical gardens and Canterbury Museum, which was also where bus connections left from so I was able to avoid using taxis. Room had comfortable bed, plenty of pillows. Radiator worked well as it was cold in Christchurch whilst there. Kitchen well-stocked so could cook own meals. Staff helpful.

Review 14:The room I was in had an odd smell to it and I could only open the window if I jimmied it with a pillow. I was also kept up until around 1am by slamming doors and loud guests (which I'm aware the hostel staff have little control over, but it made for a not very restful stay).

Review 15:The location was great and the staff friendly and helpful.

Review 16:everything is good! location is spot on! everything i want in walking distance. located in between the park, the restart mall. after i went back home, there's some error in charging my credit card and they solve it pronto! i'm happy with that. will sure stay there again

Review 17:Even though there are two kitchens, they were both fairly small. It can get crowded at peak dinner time when lots of people are preparing their meals.

Review 18:Location next to the botanic gardens is great. Ensuite shower and toilet in the dorm has good water pressure and the hot water doesn't run hot and cold.

Review 19:although internet is completely free of charge (contrarily to other hostels - be careful!), the internet signal is lost frequently.

Review 20:This property looks new inside. I guess it was rehabilitated/renovated recently. It has nice facilities and is comfortable.

Review 21:Our heater didn't work and the staff offered to move us to another room but we were so comfortable\y settled so they brought us extra blankets. So it turned out o.k. :-)

Review 22:Excellent location near the Botanical Garden! Super nice staff, Well-equipped kitchen. Comfortable room. Clean bathrooms.

Review 23:The room was great, very clean and comfortable. I loved having an ensuite attached to the dorm, and our room even had a balcony. Free unlimited WIFI was also a huge bonus! There were some super friendly cleaning staff who helped me find my room.

Review 24:Staff can be more helpful and friendly. As this is my first time in YHA , I did not know I have to bring out the towel and bed sheet. Need a bit of guiding

Review 25:Location, clean

Review 26:The wifi does not work properly.

Review 27:comparing to other hostels where I stayed in Christchurch, this one is a very good value for money. The hostel was recently renewed. The beds are confortable and the bathrooms are clean and spacious. The staff is friendly. The kitchen is also clean and organised. I would recomend it, specially if you are a backpacker.

Review 28:Everything was good except the room card sometimes didn't work.

Review 29:Friendly staff, easy walk to tourist spots, metro stops and supermarkets. Comfy and clean bed, lots of utensils in the kitchen! Had a great stay here!

Review 30:Mostly the crowd were backpackers. As a young family I felt uncomfortable at times. There were times swearing words and fights were heard

Review 31:Friendly staff and convenient place

Review 32:We booked a double room with en-suite bath room, room a bit small. There's no lift, have to carry up the luggage (could be troublesome/challenge for some if it's very heavy). On the morning of we supposed to checked out, the access card to our room "auto deactivated". We can't get back into our room without help from the staff.

Review 33:Free WiFi. We love the location and it's cleanliness.

Review 34:Just a couple of details like towel rails missing from bathroom butoverall no problem.

Review 35:Family room #101 was immediately off reception. Not too much noise on aThursday and Friday when we were there, and handy for parents to be ableto leave kids to go to sleep.

Review 36:Staffs are very much knowledgeable and accomodating. Their attitude towards backpackers like me made me feel comfortable regardless of my ethnicity so I highly recommend this place to other backpackers. A big thumbs up to all the staff.

Review 37:Only thing that was a bit tricky was getting a car park outside during the day time as there is no carparks provided.

Review 38:Great central city location. Family room was very comfortable and it was great having an en suite bathroom. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Review 39:This hostel is the best I've ever stayed in. Very clean and everything is brand new. Wifi is excellent. Everybody (staff and fellow travellers) were all cheerful and social which is a testament to YHA management doing an amazing job at satisfying the needs of staff and guests. Thanks for your hospitality.

Review 40:Location is not really central . Due to the building structure of the whole building, we can hear footstep of other's guest very clearly at night

Review 41:Shared bathroom is really spacious & big. However, due to shared area, toilets can get dirty easily Receptionists are very helpful. Free & fast wifi

Review 42:The bed was placed right under the window, so there was cold coming from the outside. Had to change the bed - not comfortable at all. As the room was on the ground floor, too much noise from guests coming late at night and just being really noisy - and apparently no staff to take care of it. Not nice...

Review 43:Location.

Review 44:There was no mirror in the room unfortunately

Review 45:After a long day travelling and a 2 week camping trip YHA came up trumps! Very comfortable bed, carpeted floors throughout to keep you extra toasty, and clean modern bathroom facilities. We didn't use the kitchen but it looked in tip top shape too. The hostel is in easy reach of Christchurch CBD which is unfortunately in a constant state of reconstruction after the quake. Very odd atmosphere everywhere as it feels a lot like a ghost town, but well worth a look around and a trip to the quake museum. All round great trip, thank you!

Review 46:No complaints

Review 47:Free wifi for someone travelling is always a extra bonus especially when ur phone coverage. Location was prefect only a short stroll anywhere. Staff were really helpful.

Review 48:Price is cheap for christchurch but expensive compared to the rest of the south island!

Review 49:Free wifi, perfect clean, nice staff, perfect kitchen, best toilet (really!) located near the center

Review 50:i was in room roadside.. noise with transient people all night and transport doors slamming didnt make for good nights sleep. . needs double glazing ..

Review 51:kitchen was a joy!! rooms mint

Review 52:There was a persistent bad smell around the toilet area on the first floor.

Review 53:I stayed here for 3 nights in total, and all the staff I encountered were more than helpful! Everyone was friendly and smiling, and always said hi when I walked through the doors!

Review 54:For the price I wouldn't recommend going for a private room. Also the bathroom could have done with being a lot cleaner.

Review 55:Great location in Christchurch and a lovely building with incredibly friendly and helpful staff. The kitchens and communal areas where clean and well maintained. I stayed in a private room with shared bathroom and the Wifi was actually free which was great. Also very quiet for a hostel.

Review 56:I guess it would be foolish to expect a hostel where predominantly young travellers stay to be quiet after a certain time ;-) needless to say after about 11-11.30 things went off and there were people running up and down stairs and upstairs corridors . Loud drunken singing ( which was okay ;-) ) but went on until around 1.00am above our room. People running up and down the gravel path next to our room was alittle disconcerting Also. Hostel accomadation is great for those not hung up on a good nights sleep , I slept alittle and for one night, I could manage but not more than that.

Review 57:The closeness of the gardens and art centre. Great having our own bathroom and TV so we could watch a movie before putting our 8yr old to bed. Our 15yr old went out and watched TV in the lounge after that and chatted to other travellers. He really enjoyed that , and the free wifi of course.

Review 58:This Yha has modern decor within an old building. It is only a short walk into the city and is even closer to the beautifully kept Botanical Gardens. There was a book exchange too. Reasonable prices for washer and dryer that both worked :)

Review 59:Stayed in private room with shared bathroom for 2 days & bathroom, which was only cleaned once a day, got pretty dirty & disgusting during our stay & didn't have hand soap.

Review 60:Great fast, free wifi, central location, comfortable and clean room.

Review 61:Staff were badly informed. Said taxi was 30, was actually 45. Bus times were wrong too, so missed bus and had to get a taxi. It was an expensive stay.

Review 62:Staff were friendly.

Review 63:I had an enjoyable stay here. The location of the Christchurch YHA is great; walking distance to the central city & ReStart mall. The showers were great & the bed was a comfy sleep for the night I was there.

Review 64:Upstairs noise, especially heavy walking down corridors and stairs. No teatowel rails in the back kitchen.

Review 65:Modern and clean facilities with room choices and close to city attractions. Staff know their stuff.

Review 66:I needed assistance to lock my window for security at night, and once locked was unable to open it for fresh air during the day, so my room which really did not smell good on arrival remained that way.

Review 67:I felt safe, and appreciated that the noise level was low during the night. It was great to be able to park my car in the grounds of a hostel close by.

Review 68:The bed was only average. Mattresses need to be better quality and firmer

Review 69:Great location and kitchen/common room very good. Staff were very helpful

Review 70:Very good facilities, excellent rooms, well equipped clean kitchens and lounges, really helpful and friendly staff, free wifi, location near the city centre

Review 71:The bathrooms could have been cleaned more often- but there's only so much you can do when lots of people use them.

Review 72:The gal who was running the front desk when I arrived (and the next morning) was incredibly pleasant and helpful! I wish I would have gotten her name to send a thank you- she was that good!

Review 73:A fan in the room would have been nice as was very warm even with window open.

Review 74:The girl at reception was really helpful & friendly to talk to. Location was 5 min walk from start up mall/city centre. 2 Kitchens & Lounges. Bed was very comfortable.

Review 75:We stayed in double room, but the room was tiny and bed also. It is far from convenient stores.(grocerys, new world). The bethrooms were only two in one floor, so it was busy also you can use toilet. It was critical when you hurry.

Review 76:Kind and friendly staff. Free atmosphere. It is nearby Botanic Garden. Kitchen and kitchenware was excellent!! The WIFI was AWESOME!!!!! I would recommand you to stay here. 방도 깨끗하고 주방도 깨끗합니다. 보타닉 가든 바로 옆에 위치해 있어요. 직원이 친절해요.

Review 77:No free tea/coffee?? It's not cheap so this would have been nice, especially after 37 hour journey :/

Review 78:Squishy pillows Helpful staff Central location

Review 79:Although not a big deal it seemed like the bath and kitchen were always a little cluttered and not as clean as I thought they should be but in fairness they are a common use areas

Review 80:Super friendly staff, great location allowing quick access to the gardens and restaurants

Review 81:Prior to our arrival, we were told private parking was available for a fee, which was fine for us and was actually a major reason as to why we selected this accommodation over others, as we had a rental car and wanted it to be parked in a secure location. However, when we arrived, we were told that they don't actually have private parking, but we could safely park on the street right around the corner for free. The next morning, we went to where we parked our rental car, and found that the windscreen and front of the roof had been smashed, we assume by somebody throwing something at it from the street or from a nearby house. We had to stay an extra night and cancel our travel plans for the next two days. That was a month ago and we're still wading through claim forms with our insurance company to cover the $1600 in repairs. Lesson learned: stay in a hotel next time with genuine private parking. It was sweet that they gave us a complimentary room upgrade for our troubles, but their website should clearly indicate that parking is available on street only.

Review 82:The Christchurch YHA on Hereford is in a great spot...easy walking distance to shops & cafes and just right around the corner from the Botanic Gardens and the Canterbury Museum. The facilities seemed quite new, relatively clean, and we never had to wait to use the bathroom or shower (and we were there in the height of summer). The staff were nice, too.

Review 83:Thought the rubbish bins could have been dumped a little more often. Always had paper towel bits on the floor of the shared bathrooms

Review 84:The staff is very helpful and the location and price(for Christchurch) are hard to beat. All in all a good experience

Review 85:The bathroom was fine with a good shower. It was very clean when I arrived but it did become untidy and had water on the floor at times. On my first night there was constant noise from people running up and down on the floor above me. There was also constant noise of doors closing. This made sleeping difficult. The second night was quiet I'm pleased to say.

Review 86:My single room was very clean, comfortable and well set up. The staff were extremely friendly, efficient and helpful. I didn't use the WiFi so can't comment on that.

Review 87:The room which we paid $105 without onsuite, was so small we could just about fit both backpacks in and have room to stand. The bathrooms, as dad as I'm aware we're not cleaned in thd 3 days we stayed, each morning I walked around divert bathroom to see which wax the least furry to take a shower. Kitchens too small for occupancy and ask to stay anywhere but the ground floor, a security light went in and off all night shining through the very thin curtains because our room faced the smoking area where people drank and played music until the early hours, not stopping when we asked. I'm disgusted at the amount if money we paid for such a terrible, unclean hostel.

Review 88:I had 2 rooms in different directions and the other one was so hot when it was nearly 30 degrees. Sun started shining in the morning and heated the room. You couldn't sleep late or stay in the room at daytime. There were no fans.

Review 89:The whole building seems quite new inside. Room was very clean and felt like being in a hotel. 4 people dorm (227 if I remember correctly) with a balcony is really nice. Near to airport bus stop and Nakedbus bus stop, gardens, good location in general.

Review 90:The room we had booked wasn't prepared, I had left a note on the booking because we we're arriving very early in the morning. This wasn't read and consequently we didn't have a room. The night manager was smug, condescending and unhelpful. They also refused us a refund. I won't be recommending this place to my friends.

Review 91:They offered us the couch to sleep on, it was little consolation.

Review 92:Banging doors because people don't take consideration of others in the building - sad that they weren't brought up correctly!

Review 93:Staff very helpfull and willing 'to go the extra mile'

Review 94:Very good location. I stayed in a 6-people dorm and it is really (like, REALLY) spacious. No need to worry about it being cramped or things like that.

Review 95:There is no lift and this was not stated in the advertising. Not only did I have luggage to get up stairs, I have a knee injury. I would have preferred to know that there's no lift and have the option to book alternative accommodation.

Review 96:Staff were friendly

Review 97:Room 14 small for a double, but fine for 1. Big opening window was great but looks straight into a dorm room a short distance away. Didn't bother me but louder neighbours could have been a problem.

Review 98:The building and room was immaculate which was unexpected for an older hostel. Free WiFi super fast, and excellent location in between the Restart mall and botanical gardens. Staff very helpful, gave directions and called me a taxi in the early morning.

Review 99:I stayed with my two teenage children for just one night stop-over. We had a double ensuite room with an extra bed. Very clean and comfortable room for the 3 of us. Also surprisingly quiet for a hostel. Staff were very friendly. Great location for those without transport.

Review 100:Parking on street only (metered from 9am to 5pm). Compared to some other YHA hostels there were few communal activities; i.e. no games room. Very sad (but a worthwhile reminder) to see so much desolation in the immediate vicinity.

Review 101:Friendly staff; clean, quiet, secure family room; well-equipped kitchen; beautifully maintained heritage building with no obvious sign of earthquake damage - which is remarkable considering its location.

Review 102:Too pricy for the size of the room, especially for the double rm without toilet. Bed is extremely soft

Review 103:Pick this hostel only bc it is close to the bus pick up point at Christchurch.

Review 104:Some food was taken from the fridge and freezer.

Review 105:Near Central Bus Station Near Atomic Shuttle Pick up Decor Everything is clean Friendly staff Helpful staff Can walk to supermarket

Review 106:One washroom on the floor for use, if your ensuite was in use. Only thing close by seemed to be the park and some shopping 50 minute walk.

Review 107:Clean, easy to get to from Train station and airport.

Review 108:The hinges of the doors cause them to slam if not careful so One person getting up to go to the loo will wake up the rest of the floor and the floor below. Sounded like a herd of elephants but Not the fault of staff

Review 109:Lovely comfy bed, clean bed linen, towels, reading lamp, tv, fast wifi, big bathrooms, lovely staff gave lots of local info, lots of fridges

Review 110:The YHA Christchurch was well located in the CBD and it was very easy to get around the city from this venue. The staff were extremely accommodating and helpful. The common rooms were very clean and the toilets and communal shower areas kept very clean. Would recommend and would stay here again if/when visiting Christchurch.

Review 111:The WIFI, gas & hot water not always working. There wasn't really any where covered to smoke.

Review 112:Stayed 3 nights. Staff were friendly & helpful. The WIFI kept bugging out & the gas or hot water thing was a bit frustrating. The dryer stopping working half way through was a pain also.

Review 113:Laundry and dinning room was dirty, hard to find a place to eat in the dinning room, as it was full of people on their computers,& phones, which was ashamed as people don't talk to one another.

Review 114:Building was lovely, rooms were quiet, reception staff were great, plenty of information available.

Review 115:I have nothing to complain about.

Review 116:Fast and free Wifi, fabulously helpful staff and the whole place was super clean. This hostel is very good for such little money and quiet central.

Review 117:Nothing

Review 118:Nice n clean Convenient TV in room is awesome Yha feels like a warm friendly place Great facilities Great wifi Will stay again its wonderful

Review 119:A small amount of milk for our cup of tea was not available...but it is a hostel.

Review 120:Front staff were helpful, aiming my fried and I to a reasonable priced and excellant food pub. Showers were new and clean.

Review 121:Large kitchen, but too small for number of people cooking!

Review 122:Many small bathrooms Very helpful staff Large communal area Facilities modern, clean and perfect for a hostel

Review 123:No proper bedside reading light or desk, but this is a youth hostel andthere is probably a philosophical preference for members to socialise incommunal lounges.

Review 124:I was pleased to see the yha in operation again in Christchurch afterthe earthquake in a different location. This building was anotherexample of adaptive reuse of an older building. Cooking facilities, freewifi (for yha members), clean, fresh, secure rooms with televisions wereimpressive.

Review 125:I liked everything- the new decor, the great kitchen and food storage facilities, the bathrooms were great. There were many nice overseas travellers staying and everyone got along very nicely in the week I stayed. It had a small and quiet vibe, even though it isn't so small. I have rebooked again already to stay in December.

Review 126:Stairs with no lift heavy luggage no help. If your a senior citizen wait to be waited on last. Went on a 6 day trip around the South Island and they charged us $180 to store 2 suitcases, any other hotel charges nothing for storage of luggage. Supposes to be laundry facilities but none were available for the whole time we were there. To much money for what we got. Lots of better places to stay for the same money. Live & learn

Review 127:Location

Review 128:It would be better if there are hair dryers in every bathrooms.

Review 129:Staff are friendly, willing to help you with any question. Share bathrooms are very clean. The kitchen is clean too and you can find anything you need in the kitchen.

Review 130:We were greeted by extremely friendly, helpful staff. They went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. The room and facilities were great value for the price. Would definitely recommend. Great location too.

Review 131:The only problem I had with the hostel was a general one. With 6-8 people in a dorm with one ensuite bathroom/toilet, there is always someone who locks themselves in there for 1-hour.

Review 132:$125 dollars for a small room with no place to put a coffee cup down no bedside table light directly over single bed nowhere to hang clothes soap container didn't work not good value for money

Review 133:good staff member cleanliness,

Review 134:Toilet right in front of window, so low your silhouette can be seen through frosty window of you sitting on loo...lol. Noise outside room door @ 8am as something being fixed. Lots of banging of room doors.

Review 135:Comfy bed and room, friendly staff.
