Reviews for YMCA Christchurch
Review 1:Stains on the carpet. Quality of mattresses (you just fall in the bed and mattress has no shape, so you just fall in). I slept almost in "sitting position" as the mattress was too soft!
Review 2:Can't flush toilet after use. Kitchen is dirty and closes at 10pm. Shower doesn't work really well. Staff are not very friendly. Room does not have enough light in the evening.
Review 3:Rooms clean and beds comfy but toilets all dirty (and old), kitchen too small with most guests not playing the game (recycle wash dry and tidy), leaving trash in sink, piles of dishes to dry etc. no proper communal area.
Review 4:Location price Staff
Review 5:The manager lady was very rude and miserable to other staff and guests at the main reception
Review 6:Great location, clean rooms, quiet, enough plug sockets, good shower
Review 7:Paid Internet was not working half of the time, because of network failure. But got a free voucher when we mentioned it!
Review 8:Located close to place where we had to deliver our rental campervan, very convenient.
Review 9:Electronic card didn't work properly - got stuck in lift first trip upstairs - terrifying for us, who had been in earthquakes. Decided to use stairs, but twice were unable to get through doors at top of stairs (once, electronic problem with crd, 2nd time bolt was not working properly. This was a major fault which would stop me from using this otherwise excellent place.
Review 10:Great staff
Review 11:Free wifi was spotty, numerous times my Gmail and Facebook would not open due to security threats. On site restaurant too pricey for us. Laundry facility on site very handy.
Review 12:We had a medical emergency. The YMCA was just a 5 min. walk from the hospital. The room was basic but great, staff were terrific, wifi free but spotty. Location near main attractions a real plus, such as the boathouse, botanical gardens, and the cathedral. Fun to meet lots of college students and budget travellers staying at the YMCA, too.
Review 13:The room was not clean especially the bed sheets and the carpet. It was too noisy that we were unable to sleep.
Review 14:We like the location as there were gardens at walking distance
Review 15:Awful stained carpets, poorly maintained bathroom with no hand towel.Over-priced $95 for just a room - awful dirty room. When I told thereceptionist she said "Well, it is a hostel'. What nonsense.Yha hostels are clean and neat and inexpensive. That's whereI'll be staying next time. Definitely not fun to stay at the ymca.
Review 16:Nothing. Waste of money, awful stained carpets.
Review 17:The showers dont work in the morning on the 3rd floor and the toilet wouldnt flush. Swipe lift card ran out at 9.05!!
Review 18:Friendly pleasant service great breakfast at the cafe lovely staff
Review 19:What we received was really just the basics. Not even a small table in my 'luxury' room. Basically, just a bed -- though I agree it was clean and comfortable. The price was not all that low, in spite of the somewhat Spartan conditions.
Review 20:Convenient location
Review 21:Being moved from 4th floor to 2nd just because we checked in late after bwing turned away earlier because 4th floor room wasn't ready
Review 22:The bed and bedding were amazing. ..really comfortable
Review 23:Clean and functional, in my view highly suitable for transiting Ch-ch by air. All the shuttle and taxi drivers know where it is, which is handy because all the budget flights seem to arrive at midnight and leave at 6 am.
Review 24:Kitchen and TV room are very small.
Review 25:Location is perfect, just beside Botanic Gardens and Canteburry museum, it's also very close to re:start mall, the cathedral square and the cardboard cathedral. The double room is big and comfortable. Shared bathroom is like it was individual cause just one person at time can use it (without having to wait a long time to use it).
Review 26:nothing, all great.
Review 27:everything was fantastic, excellent location, great helpful staff. And the best: we had a extra quiet room up on the 4th floor. Thanks a lot! And we were very happy about the free car parking.
Review 28:The kitchen while good needs more staff involvement in cleaning after busy times. Over two days does not appear to have been done. Both sinks had clogged drains
Review 29:Proximity to interesting things to see. Wide number of other nationalities.
Review 30:The location, next to the Botanical Garden is excellent, particularly as its also next to the Museum which is a bus stop for trips to tourist destinations within and outside Christchurch, and a tram stop. (The garden and museum are really worth a visit too). The staff are great and help organise taxis to the airport etc, the reception is manned 24/7, and there is a tourist help desk in the YMCA, together with a coffee shop and a restaurant. Thanks for a great stay guys!
Review 31:Genuinely friendly staff. Clean room. Comfy bed. Balcony. Car parking free. Having a shared bathroom was not like sharing at all. Still private and clean.
Review 32:Some people talk in the lounge or run and scream in the middle of the night. But these are just normal negatives of hostel not ymca itself. Refregerator is way too small. Sometimes it is impossible to find your own food bag!!
Review 33:Cleaness, location
Review 34:Proper hand towels in bathrooms would be a nice addition, as people put their feet on the bath mats
Review 35:Fantastic location, adequate facilities for what I needed, friendly staff
Review 36:This is a great location to stay, very handy to the city centre, and just across the road from the Botanic Gardens. I appreciate the 24 hour reception - excellent for late-night arrivals from the airport. The staff are unfailingly friendly and helpful.
Review 37:Room 411, which I also occupied one year ago, still had a gouge in the wall plaster near the bed I used. I reported this to reception at the time. This is not a good look in a 'deluxe' room. And very easy to fix with plaster and spot-touching matching paint stippled in to place. The balcony should be swept and washed. The seals around the shower screen frame need refreshing. These small details make a big impression. There was one staff member (sorry, no name ... blonde hair, pony tail) who was extremely coarse in her speech to staff under her and in earshot of customers at the reception counter. A senior staff member should know better. This reflects badly on the YMCA. Especially when most of the staff are so nice and helpful.
Review 38:The central location: ... which is in close proximity to the Botanic Gardens, trams, Court Theatre. And only a short walk to the new bus depot with its reliable airport bus service.
Review 39:Staff was friendly but didn't tell you a lot about the hostel, you had to ask for everything. Bathrooms on first floor were not clean. Room was cold.
Review 40:Location
Review 41:Not near the inter city bus drop. Not really a backpack. More of a hotel for people wanting to stay in the city for work etc. this is acceptable due to the situation in Christchurch.
Review 42:Spacious, central. Shuttle to rail station for 5 dollars.
Review 43:mixed dining bit of an enclave possibly young people prefer each others company
Review 44:position safety being on my own it was good to have com[pany very central easy to locate especially after the earthquake
Review 45:Great location. 24hr check-in is v helpful. No complaints about facilities or staff. Kinda enjoyed listening to the couple next door have loud shower sex, lol.
Review 46:I had a room on the second floor, and was able to hear to much noise from the road.
Review 47:I like the situation of this property. As a solo traveler and a user of public transport, the YMCA is just a few hundred metres away from where the buses arrive from other NZ destinations, and departure point. The property is only a short ten minute walk to the new bus exchange, which offers transport to many areas of Christchurch.
Review 48:Free wifi would be good rather than charging for it and some breakfast as there is no supermarket nearby and only one overpriced cafe attached to the hostel
Review 49:Nice hostel. Had a double room and it was spacious and clean. Had a shared bathroom and was right at our door which was good. Overall enjoyed our stay at YMCA
Review 50:We found the staff extremely helpful. They changed our room to a double on request, booked an airport shuttle for 4am, and gave excellent recommendations for dinner. Our double room had beautiful views of the botanical garden across the street.
Review 51:We were next to the shared bathroom, could be quite noisy if other guests were inconsiderate and loud over night.
Review 52:Good location, friendly receptionist, electric blanket.
Review 53:No location is good in Chch anyway. Very basic room (twin room, park view). Kitchen closed after ten pm! And between 10.30 and 11.30! What the ..? Laundry too. Walls are paper thin, if your neighbour talks, you wont sleep.
Review 54:The staff,
Review 55:Friendly place, welcoming staff, good access to places to eat. Good location, easy walk into the city centre, and just across from the Botanical Gardens.
Review 56:I stayed here while visiting my sister who was in the Chch hospital! SOoooo close to hosp - only 2 min walk! Staff were friendly...Great value for money!! shared bathrooms but very clean with hot water! kitchen is very clean too.. I didnt use laundry much, just iron, and was happy with it! Thank you YMCA!!!
Review 57:The view from room 504 and the space overall value for money I enjoyed the Asian infusion restaurant attached The staff were sooo helpful and friendly
Review 58:The Staff on Reception were not particularly helpful on explanation. Trying to obtain wireless connection abysmal
Review 59:Room excellent for price. Cafe food/prices good.
Review 60:Some guests are rather noisy when they are coming and going in the night to the shared bathrooms across the hall from my room where I had private facilities.
Review 61:I chose to stay here as this is where the conference was. Great location for having a stroll in Hagley Park in the morning and evening. Also some decent eating places around. having Robert Harris in the lobby is great.
Review 62:Toilet and shower near room were faulty and were when I stayed in June at which time I did tell staff but didn't this visit. However still a great place to stay
Review 63:Close to everything
Review 64:Not a great backpacker vibe. Asked a staff member for advice on where to go in the city, and she said everything is around the cathedral, when in fact there's not much at all around the cathedral other than hotels it seemed (because of the quake damage/rebuild). Door to my room didn't lock easily.
Review 65:Bathrooms were always free when I needed one. Bed was comfy/warm. Free car parking. Staff friendly. Clean room.
Review 66:make sure you push the shower/toilet doors after locking it as it doesn't always close properly.
Review 67:The location is perfect, just across the road from the botanic gardens and the museum. Shuttle buses to points of interest are also just across the road. It's close to the main city centre but far enough that you don't hear the hustle and bustle late at night. The towels were provided and changed daily. Staff were fantastic to us and we're always helpful. Shower/ toilet was clean and were always accessible when needed (no waiting in line to use them). Surprisingly quiet as well considering we stayed here during school holiday. The café downstairs was also handy to grab a quick bite and to satisfy coffee needs.
Review 68:It is handy to the city centre, the hospital and the botanic gardens and we have a free car park for the time we are there. It was also very handy having our own en-suite.
Review 69:Staff woke us at midnight on the night before our very long flight back to the UK to move our car, even thought we were told earlier in the day it was fine where it was, as they said the area was needed a wedding early next morning. The next morning we noted the area was not in use before we left at 10am. Our room had a shower next door which was very loud and kept us awake when people were showering at all hours during the night, which was inconvenient. Otherwise accommodation was very basic, you can get better for a similar price elsewhere (YHA up the road where we stayed another night is a good example).
Review 70:Good location, clean.
Review 71:The kitchen is terribly small for such a big hostel. Same for the "TV room". WiFi isn't free. More a factory than a hostel.
Review 72:Bed was really comfy. Bathroom next door. Excellent location.
Review 73:Really nothing they can improve on, I was really happy with my stay.
Review 74:Great location, wonderful staff, you had to pay a day pass for wifi but it was fast and unlimited. There were enough bathrooms that I never had to wait and the beds had heating pads in them to chase away the cold.
Review 75:A storm came through and something on the roof was banging very loudly to wake us. Also with the changes in CHCH very confusing to find way to and from the YMCA
Review 76:friendliness of staff and willingness to help.
Review 77:All was good, needed affordable accommodation and they definitely delivered.
Review 78:Simple, neat and quiet. Free parking made it even easier. Facilities are clean. Very busy kitchen.
Review 79:the most expensive hostel I have stayed in NZ and still no wifi, the first time no tea and coffee offered for free. The kitchen needs more pans.
Review 80:Friendly helpful reception staff. Very warm rooms, clean bathrooms.
Review 81:Paid WIFI dropped out and had to purchase more even though we could not use it due to problems. Could not go anywhere to buy provisions
Review 82:No breakfast provided, so we could make our own. Cleanliness of the room Location in centre of town making it well placed for sightseeing
Review 83:JOSH at reception unfortunately made us wait for 20minutes for him to end his phone call whilst we waited at 5.30 till 5.50am the morning. All we wanted to do is check in and had a snooze before going on our way down south. He didn't even acknowledge us when we walked in. At that time of the morning, no one around! we expected a bit better service.
Review 84:I booked a dorm bed and when I arrived the bed had not been changed. When I told the situation to the staff, he complained and reallocated me in a worst dorm.
Review 85:Just spent one night there
Review 86:Unfortunately I got little sleep as on both nights of my stay I was woken several times in the early hours of the morning by the other occupants on my floor as they called out to each other and slammed their doors.
Review 87:My room had a great view of the botanical gardens. It was good being in a central location and the conference I was attending was in the YMCA so I only had to walk downstairs.
Review 88:Wifi was not available in many places but not a dislike
Review 89:Excellent location, great staff very helpful, excellent location for pick up points for trips etc. Christchurch is a must to visit location.
Review 90:The price of the WiFi was expensive and over priced.
Review 91:The counter staff were really helpful and knowledgeable about locations within the city, bus timetables and stops etc. Always having a smile.
Review 92:The Showers aren't great. They are really cold or really hot. And when it's hot you don't get enough water.
Review 93:Loved the heaters in the beds!
Review 94:I didn't really like to pay wifi. That is the only thing.
Review 95:Everything. And a special thanks to the staff, who let us sleep in the TV Room because we arrived very early in the morning and our room was still occupied.
Review 96:Other guests weren't very considerate, lots of noise in the hallways after children were in bed, kitchen was generally left very dirty with dishes in the sink and tables not wiped down.
Review 97:Location was great, comfortable room, good to be able to prepare own meals.
Review 98:I got in late and the restirant downstairs was open till 11pm so I didn't have to wander the streets to find a place to eat. Really great staff so helpful and pleasant.
Review 99:Shower water pressure was tragic, be nice to have a TV in the common room.
Review 100:Great location near Hagley Park, great electric blankets, clean, good value.
Review 101:There is no free wifi, you need to pay at lest $5 to get 10GB.
Review 102:Warm room, especially in winter, the shower room is clean. Staffs are very nice and patient. Just like a big family.
Review 103:Awesome location, short walk to the hospital where we were working. Lovely and warm, staff always had a smile, even when we needed them to open the door for us after late shift!
Review 104:Shower doors needed to open wider as I am a large person and struggled to fit through.
Review 105:Close to the hospital which we were visiting and nice cafe & restaurant downstairs so we didn't have to venture far to find anything.
Review 106:Paying for wifi. And though there were signs saying keep noise down after 10pm, people don't bother being considerate I guess.
Review 107:Pretty good location. Clean bathroom. Kitchen is ok. Decently comfy bed and pillows. A good heater in the room!
Review 108:The beds! super squeaky and moved with every little turn. Also the night porter was quite rude.
Review 109:Great location next to the Botanical Gardens. Walking distance to the Container mall etc. Free parking behind the building and several options for breakfast/coffee/dinner on site.
Review 110:Heater only goes on for an hour at a time, so it can get pretty chilly at night. Shared kitchen can get pretty crowded and busy during meal times - it's a very small kitchen considering the number of guests staying at the YMCA. No free wi-fi.
Review 111:Heated mattress pads. Rooms were clean.
Review 112:wifi is $5/day, it's kinda expensive as people stay in the hostel probably will be out most of the times, only needed it to check important messages etc, also the speed was kinda slow. It would be good if you provide some data options :)
Review 113:The location is good, room is clean, bed comfortable, I stayed in standard twin share room by myself just for the space and privacy, good value for the price, the cleanness of shared bathrooms are reasonably maintained, and the staff are very helpful and friendly.
Review 114:Great location to walk to museum, botanical gardens and restart mall, cathedral etc. Easy direct road access to and from airport with car parking facilities.
Review 115:I bought access to Wi-Fi and experienced some issues. Staff didnt help me to solve them
Review 116:A really nice price for a place to stay in the city. Its great that they have free parking Beds and rooms are clean and comfortable enough
Review 117:The cleaners cleaning the bathrooms at 8:30 in the morning when many guests were still trying to use them. Is it not possible for the cleaning staff to start a bit later in the day??
Review 118:Friendly staff and comfortable clean room with heater.
Review 119:Just one guest in my room who was overly noisy at 3am when he woke up. Nothing to complain about with the facilities themselves.
Review 120:Was ok. Quick stop overnight. Was only there about 8hrs.
Review 121:Because of all the mobile digital devices, the rooms need more power outlets, especially in the dormitories with six people wanting to use power outlets. I would have liked a personal hand-towel provided so I wouldn't have to carry a wet hand-towel in my pack the next day.
Review 122:Location and value are great! The bed was comfortable too.
Review 123:With all the refurbished backpackers opening up in the area though the YMCA is looking a little run down and dated. There was an underage rave that went until midnight while we were there, I didn't see any notice of this and it went until 11:30 pm. We had to be up at 3 to go to the airport so this was VERY annoying!
Review 124:I travel through Christchurch often and usually use the YMCA as a base. The location is great for getting around Christchurch.
Review 125:The wifi kept dropping in our room and can only be used by one device at a time
Review 126:Excellent! Great service, warm, spacious room, comfy bed, easy to find. Will definitely stay again next time we are in Chch.
Review 127:Thev kitchen method of cleaning dishes and also the lack of TV on all floors although not a big deal.
Review 128:The cleanliness of the rooms, various bathrooms and the great attached restaurant that made for close and delicious dinner meals.Exceeded my expectations
Review 129:Asked for room near bathrooms. Wasn't that close and it had cracks in the handbasin and shower. I booked on the Mon at $85 and then found same room offered for $70 for the next few days. This annoyed me.
Review 130:Free parking. Nice staff 24 hour access Robert Harris coffee shop in the building is nice. Had lovely breakfast there.
Review 131:Noisy, early leavers; bus engines left running outside bedrooms. Bathroom maintenance appears to have slipped in recent times. (Broken sink, broken shelf, shower doors off runners.)
Review 132:Efficient friendly, well trained staff.
Review 133:Our stay was too short. We arrived at 8:30 at night and left at 6:30 in the morning
Review 134:The location was ideal. We got off the bus and walked a block to the YMCA. In the morning we walked a block to the Antigua Boatshed Cafe for mochachinos then another block to catch the bus to the airport.
