Reviews for Pousada Forte da Horta
Review 1:Expensive, about twice the price of the next available accommodation during the August period, probably on account of the lack of any real competition on Faial island. However, some items easily resolvable by the Pestana management were unsatisfactory for this price range, they are: -Very spartan minibar -Old-fasioned door keys, I struggled to get the key to turn at all times at my door. -No loungers or recliners on the nice balconies to really soak in the view (you get sit-up rattan chairs) -Very weak Wifi outside the reception and restaurant area. Fades out in the garden and rooms on the upper floor. My room 116 was not covered by the Wifi signal. However, they are attentive staff and we were asked if we wanted to relocate near a router but we declined as we are not that wifi-dependant. Installing extra routers is easy and inexpensive, by the way. -Restaurant service is really very slow. -Breakfast is reasonable but à la carte dinner was very average. I had fried squid (lulas fritas) and found it tough, overcooked and far too salty. (and I like salty food) To be fair, the cuisine standards in the Azores in general is not great. Dining here is probably as good as you will get in Faial. -Finally, the management should consider giving up a couple of tables in the restaurant for a larger and more inviting lounge area by the (occasionally staffed) bar. The restaurant takes up far too much of the Front-of-House area.
Review 2:This is my fourth stay over a 15-year period. Exceptional location on Horta's waterfront overlooking the marina, sea, and Pico Volcano beyond. Beautiful ivy-clad bastioned fort with a small modern porticoed structure within that houses the hotel run currently by Pestana, but opearing more like a smallish boutique set-up. Elegant black basalt staircase rising to the upper floor. Most rooms face East over the pooled garden and views. Staff are exceptionally courteous, in particular the lady at the reception table who stands to attention as you approach and had all things ready for a speedy check-in. There is a pool between the hotel building and the fort wall with a lounge deck. I had room 116. Large bed, balcony with spectacular sea and Pico volcano views.
Review 3:Breakfast was poor, price. We paid almost €240 per night which having now been at Pousada I can say it is absolutely crazy and totally unjustified for this hotel. Should not charge more than €150-160.
Review 4:Position,view
Review 5:Wifi was spotty, if you need it.
Review 6:Excellent location, very helpful staff, clean rooms, good breakfast buffet. Ask for a room with a view on the Marina and the Pico mountain will be staring right at you! Grocery store nearby and for a simpler good meal, eat one night at Papa Pizza located about 1 minute from the hotel.
Review 7:Rooms are smallish and shower a bit tricky. Pool was closed for no apparent reason or rational explanation - too cold? However all considered, an excellent stay. Wifi only worked in general areas of hotel.
Review 8:Friendly and helpful staff. Arranged early breakfast and checkout. Good breakfast. Recommend rooms overlooking harbour.
Review 9:Our particular room was on the side of the hotel vs. facing the ocean. The room was adequate and there was a partial view, but ocean facing rooms had better views and a balcony. We will request an ocean facing room if we return...and we would return.
Review 10:Very helpful and nice staff. Great breakfast. Good views (if you are in the rooms facing the ocean).
Review 11:The bed was rather hard to sleep on as the mattress was extra firm.
Review 12:The view from our room was absolutely amazing! Warm summer breeze floating in from the ocean was a delight to wake to each morning. Staff extremely helpful and courteous.
Review 13:The "special" over 55 rate is not so special in that it offers only a viewless room at the back/side of the hotel, i.e. the rooms nobody really wants. Having to walk through the bar to use the pool. Some sort of outdoor changing area would be appreciated.
Review 14:View of harbour, terrace balcony and overall intimate feel. Breakfast offered a good.choice. Staff were very helpful and friendly.
Review 15:The staff, the castle itself.
Review 16:Historic building, well designed inside and outside, good swimming pool, excellent value.
Review 17:It is the best hotel we have visited in Faial. Location is excellent, very testy breakfast, helpful staff.Nothing negatuve about this place ;-)
Review 18:unique property with quality rooms, staff, and food.
Review 19:Friendly & professional staff.
Review 20:Very small shower. No handicapped person could manage it.
Review 21:Excellent staff. Nothing was too much trouble and always smiling, Perfect locations with many rooms having a good view of Pico Island and ours was perfect.
Review 22:We were the only guests there at the time and it felt a bit lonely.
Review 23:I love Pousadas in general. Our room had a fantastic view but unfortunately it rained both days and we couldn't enjoy our patio. Most delicious onion soup ever! Great breakfast.
Review 24:Rooms need better sound proofing
Review 25:Location is really good, the staff were very friendly. The bed/mattress was very comfortable, the breakfast was delicious. The views of Pico island are amazing
Review 26:The restaurant's dinner was definagtely not worth the unusual high price for Azores. Breakfast though was better taste and quality
Review 27:The location and view like said here so many times and front desk staff's friendliness.
Review 28:I gave a poor rating for comfort and value because the air conditioningwas broken and there were no screens in the balcony window. Therefore wehad to choose between being hot and stuffy or eaten alive by mosquitos.
Review 29:Wonderful staff, location, and historic building. Beautiful wellmaintained pool and we loved our view and balcony. Also we had anawesome blowout dinner on the last night of our honeymoon and enjoyedthe restaurant fully, despite having read some poor reviews.
Review 30:The only negative experienced during our two-day stay was a mediocre breakfast buffet, which was not replenished after 9.15 am. The restaurant seemed understaffed, though the one girl we did see remained very cheerful and friendly. We did not dine in the restaurant, as local establishments provided better value for money.
Review 31:This is a beautiful hotel in a superb position overlooking the famous harbour and the Pico volcano on the neighbouring island. Our room was lovely with a large and well appointed bathroom and a good sized terrace. The staff at this hotel are friendly and helpful. One receptionist in particular – Luisa – went the extra mile for us, when I left my glasses on a public bus the day before.
Review 32:The hotel is ideally placed in Horta in a coomanding position overlooking the very busy marina. The hotel was comfortable and the staff helpful and friendly.
Review 33:Very poor breakfast. At 10AM, some products were not available. A bit understaffed. Pricy bar items. Cleanliness arround could be improved.
Review 34:Amazing view over Pico island (1st floor). Cosy atmosphere. They borrow you towels for the pool and they smell wonderful!
Review 35:We ate once in the restaurant which was nice but be warned the covercharge for bread and the dish of olives you get is a little heftyconsidering elsewhere it is free! Especially since they just put it onthe table so you think you're getting it for free!
Review 36:We are a couple in our early 30s who stayed here for six nights. Fromwhat we saw I think this is definitely the best hotel in Horta! Thehotel is in an old fort with a beautiful pool area and garden lookingout over the busy Horta harbour. The rooms were lovely, clean andmodern and we had a huge super king sized bed which was verycomfortable and we were sad to leave behind! We paid for a sea viewwhich was a hefty bit more but worth every penny. We had a beautifulbalcony with table and chairs and a picture perfect view of the mightyPico volcano. The location and view could not be better! I had read thestaff were unfriendly in other reviews but I think it must have been abad experience as the staff were all perfectly polite and helpful. Thebuffet breakfast is gorgeous (especially the fresh fruit and dailyhomemade cake). If you are looking for a homely guesthouse feel thenyou won't get it here, but you will get a unique, modern and beautifulhotel with pleasant staff - all with excellent english. We ate once inthe restaurant and the food was priced similarly to elsewhere and thefood was good.
Review 37:Room space a little limited - was a cheaper room
Review 38:Location. Warm welcome helpful staff
Review 39:Excellent location, comfortable room with nice view, friendly staff.
Review 40:So friendly and helpful staff. Style and good feeling. Very good food in the restaurant and breakfast that makes you happy for the rest of the day.
Review 41:Average breakfast and restaurant
Review 42:Room, sea view, very good hotel
Review 43:Everything! Room with a view!!!
