Reviews for The Literary Man Obidos Hotel

Review 1:Misleading information on the booking-com side. We booked an "individually decorated" room of 25 m2, with "Romantic package" and extra long (> 2m) traditional wrought-iron beds, tile/marble floor, and all accomodities (as safety box, ironing facilities, minibar ...) in a traditional style, as stataed in the discriptiopn and shown on the photographs. When we arrived at about 6 pm, they showed us a little room of just about 10 m2 with not finished wooden decoration, which was much less inviting than a scandinavian sauna. As we like passing time in a sauna, but not staying in there a whole night, we asked to change the room. The person in the reception was very helpful, but it took him almost one hour and several phone calls to find another room, although there were only 3 rooms occupied that night. This 2nd room was much better, and we accepted it, even if it still not had all the proposed features. We finally also got the "Romantic Package" after insisting 2 more times, but it had already failed its purpose at that time, as I wanted it to be a surprise for my girlfriend when coming in. The receptionist appologized next day, telling us that the information is more clear on the hotel's own webside than on booking.com. Hopefully that will be corrected there as well. The idea with a litterary hotel is excellent, but the hotel direction should not change so extremely the ambience of this old monastery. The new "ecological" style gives more the impression to stay in a cheap hostel than in a 4 star hotel. Anyhow this hotel deserves not more than 3 stars.

Review 2:Good location, good breakfast, calm room, friendly and helpfull staff

Review 3:The industrial toilet roll dispenser in the bathroom.

Review 4:Relaxed attitude to breakfast times, the chocolate cake, general air of calm and comfort at the hotel.

Review 5:Everything was just fine

Review 6:Cute place. Nice patio out front to enjoy the evening. Our room had a small balcony too. property was interesting. They are making a big reading room. Lots to explore inside. Breakfast was extensive. Staff was very helpful . Gave us maps and directions and suggestions for our stay. I would recommend staying here. Close to town too.

Review 7:There was an unpleasant smell of bug repellant in our room.

Review 8:A lovely spacious building with quirky character and interesting rooms, and filled floor to ceiling with books. Breakfast was excellent. Street parking was convenient. It was quiet and clean.

Review 9:We don't like the fact that the Estalagem do Convento is changing its name to 'The Literary Men' and rooms are being modernised. New style rooms are completely out of character with the lovely old building. Keep it in the old style, that is what the visitors prefer!

Review 10:The relaxed atmosphere in the hotel and friendly staff. The heritage and peaceful location of such a lovely old building. The style of the bedroom furnished in the 'old style'.

Review 11:The beds no comfortable seating areas within the bar, difficult to obtain a drink as not sufficient staff.

Review 12:The design and relaxed atmosphere. The decor felt like you were in a museum with no hotel feel, very relaxing.

Review 13:Did not offer wifi in the rooms

Review 14:We were so delighted to have stayed here. This most charming hotel is located just outside of the castle walls, close to EVERYTHING, 2-minute walks. The decor is historically artistic, and the room we had was beautifully decorated and extremely comfortable. The staff is very nice and helpful, offering a welcome drink upon arrival. The breakfast room is inviting with a nice layout of food. This is a very comfortable place to stay. The only downside is wifi is not offered in the rooms. Parking can be a challenge, but not impossible. Obidos is a charming place to visit, don't miss this sweet little town; one night is sufficient. Be sure to walk the entire castle wall around the city, and if you do it later in the early evening you'll enjoy the local music streaming up from the city. We would definitely return to this hotel.

Review 15:A la carte restaurant was ok, but quite expensive and not 100% worth the money. Wifi did not work at all until morning of checkout. Although, we were compensated for this.

Review 16:Very nice girl checking us in! Clean facilities, nice athmosphere. Breakfast nice, when we asked for fresh orange juice and fried eggs we got this.

Review 17:No ventilation fan in the bathroom and no bedroom mirror was a little inconvenient. Wi-fi (common areas only) could have been better. Breakfast was lovely and varied - but no fresh juice let it down.

Review 18:The place itself - a converted convent right by the castle in a quiet area of the old part of town. There's lots of history about the place and the staff are incredibly helpful and friendly.Local bars and restaurants are good too.

Review 19:Trip caught me in cold days which looks usual in the región but nothing against the hotel

Review 20:Quiet village and charming surroundings Easy Access to sea shore in Foz do arelho and Peniche. Good mix of Inland and beach vacation

Review 21:We didn't get any wi-fi in the room, but that was not a big issue. We just went into the common area and had it just fine. The parking was a little sketchy, especially with oncoming traffic down the hill, but our car was secured and had no incidents despite the busy traffic during the medieval fair. Otherwise, everything was quite perfect and we would go back again and stay.

Review 22:We loved where the location of the hotel was, right outside the wall, and not too far to walk to the medieval fair, or anywhere within the walled city. We had a great time! The bedroom was beautiful and quite comfortable. Breakfast was fantastic as well.

Review 23:The bad is horrible and the pillows are fat and wavy. I had a terrible night of sleep there. In addition, you hear everything that happens everywhere in the hotel.

Review 24:Well located with decent breakfast

Review 25:Splendod location. Very friendly staff and very good breakfast. Obidos is beautifull and kind. The hotel is in the same atmosphere. The neigbour is a bar that presents twice a week a fado show. I liked it very much.

Review 26:The hotel is in a very convenient location to explore Obidos. The staff were helpful and friendly and the room was more an apartment which made our stay very cosy.

Review 27:Although not needed there was no air conditioning. Wifi was only available in public areas.

Review 28:Great ambiance in a historical setting. Professional, attentive staff. Great breakfast with lots of variety and fresh fruit.

Review 29:Very uncomfortable bed! We got a room just above the entrance hall - it was noisy late in the evening and early in the morning. The breakfast is standard (ham, chees, cakes) The scrammbled eggs were awfuly done by the waiter, as no cooker was in the kitchen! and then offered on one plate for two people. The manager had noticed that but did not stop and change anything just appologized later. At the moment they proposed their restraunt as of high quality(((

Review 30:Nice decorations but I supposed to have another room.Strong wifi (only in our room). Good recomendations on the sight seeing places and restraunts on the coast as well. Near the old town - 2-3 min walk.

Review 31:Asked for double bed and got a twin with single sheet, and room, indoors, seemed to be a last resort: with hotel capacity at 1/3 (as one noticed at breakfast) one is tempted to think that discount booking via booking.com means being given worse rooms and twin for double, even if better, double rooms are empty just across the corridor. Breakfast: horrible artificial orange juice, no eggs and bacon, only one type of bread, poor offer for a 4 stars.

Review 32:Location, building, décor of common areas

Review 33:Wifi didn't work.

Review 34:Lounge area. Breakfast

Review 35:The weather ! But can't criticise the hotel for that

Review 36:Quirky building beautifully located with really helpful staff

Review 37:Eclectically charming. Warm and helpful staff. Turned a tourist town into a welcoming oasis!

Review 38:Natalia, the manager, was excellent and provided great customer service and personally ensured our every need was met.

Review 39:restaurant

Review 40:location

Review 41:Our shower dripped water all night

Review 42:Hotel had lovely ambiance, staff were friendly, food (breakfast) lovely

Review 43:Pillows

Review 44:Superb location, next to the walls

Review 45:Very close to back door gate of Obidos.

Review 46:The atmosphere is great, lovely welcome! Breakfast is fabulous!

Review 47:Bearly three stars need to be remodeled

Review 48:Very traditional location very well renewed

Review 49:Limited reach of wifi. Mattresses were harder then we were used to.

Review 50:Friendly staff. Great breakfast.

Review 51:L'albergo si trova in ottima posizione per visitare il paese, camere pulite e tranquille, buona la colazione

Review 52:The beds were poor, the breakfast, so-so

Review 53:The location and the uniqueness of a hotel from an old convent

Review 54:Weak WiFi, no air con, 14 inch tv from another era, cramped bathroom

Review 55:Decoration, breakfast, location

Review 56:Very charming hotel in the pitoresque town of Obios. The rooms are cosy and the staff was very supportive - thanks Rafaela.

Review 57:Room was a bit plain and hard to access. Up some stairs from the reception.

Review 58:Reasonable price and good location just outside of Obidos. Very nice and helpful staff.

Review 59:The hotel is very interesting, in old convent building. Rooms have nice patio or balcony. location is great - right outside the city walls. Staff is great.

Review 60:The hotel is quite loud in the main building. The staff happily moved us to another room (from room 3) after our first night. We could hear every foot step and cough from that room.

Review 61:Location.

Review 62:Nothing!

Review 63:We loved our stay here and wished it could have been a lot longer. All the staff were very friendly and accommodating particularly as we were 2 OAP's on our bicycles! The breakfasts had lots of choice and very sustaining

Review 64:Excellent location right outside the Castle walls with excellent breakfast as well. Just a few steps away from the castle and a good selection of restaurants.

Review 65:There was nothing I didn't like.

Review 66:The room was clean and comfortable. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The breakfast is also very good. Great place to stay and see Obidos. Would definitely stay here again.

Review 67:Bathrooms a little dated; mattressess very hard & with plasticky protectors.

Review 68:Location excellent; breakfast (included) very high standard & excellent choice; very friendly staff; lovely, atmospheric public areas with free wifi.

Review 69:Due to an issue during the reservation process the staff was forced to offer us a room with two twin beds, joined together, instead of a double bed. This is not as comfortable but, given everything else, was not an issue.

Review 70:Very friendly and always helpful staff. Excellent location, inside the town's walls, perfect for exploring Óbidos (which is trully magic, especially at night). Comfortable rooms and well heated during a cold winter. Breakfast was good and complete.

Review 71:No elevator. Installation might not be compatible with atmosphere of ancient building so the steps are a small price to pay.

Review 72:Marvellous old building right at gate through town walls. Very helpful staff. The room was small but was comfortable and had everything we needed and was perfectly clean.

Review 73:Car parking can be tricky.

Review 74:From the greeting when we arrived to the goodbyes when we left we were catered for expertly. The hotel is still run by the family that has owned it for nearly 40 years and they are there to help you enjoy your stay. The location for Obidos couldn't be better. There is a gate within the village walls 50 metres from the hotel so you can walk straight into the lovely town without having to wander far. The hotel itself has loads of character and the rooms are original from the days when it was a convent. You can be served drinks in the lounge area. As it was autumn and getting colder at night - there was a log fire burning which made everything cosy. To top it all the family members joined us to advise on the area. That doesn't happen in most hotels. We will definitely go back to this hotel.

Review 75:Really nothing

Review 76:This is a gem! Easy to find, just outside the city walls. Easy to park. It is converted all convent, furnished with old furniture but good new bathroom. Good breakfast. They recommended to us an excellent restaurant.

Review 77:Nothing

Review 78:Unforgettable place! Cozy and comfortable hotel in the former conventjust near the old Obidos tawn wall. Very careful and helpful staff.Interesting room interior. We are going to visit Obidos again andcertainly will stay at Hotel Estalagem Do Convento .

Review 79:breakfast server unfriendly. breakfast food not replenished often enough.

Review 80:unique hotel, outside patio, bar, location to walled city, sites and restaurants.

Review 81:This is a lovely and quite extraordinary hotel. It was built as a nunnery and was completed in 1833 but, fortunately for us, the nuns never arrived. The building still retains much of the quaint old-fashioned charm and the refectory (now the breakfast room) is stunning. Even the newer parts of the hotel have been tastefully and sympathetically blended into the ambiance with stylish fittings and décor. The staff are all very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The breakfasts are superb with a good variety of choice and although they don’t do other meals, there is a good choice of restaurants within easy walking distance. Parking, during our stay was never a problem and we were always able to find a space close to the hotel. Overall, I would thoroughly recommend the Estalgem do Convento and would not want to stay anywhere else.

Review 82:There was a local music festival and the music was loud past 3:00am...not the hotels fault.

Review 83:The room was lovely with a sitting area and juliet balcony to a beautiful view.

Review 84:Its an old and attractive building, I wish they could find a budget to do up the public areas with some edgy modern furniture. it would make a nice contrast. But we were perfectly happy in this hotel

Review 85:I thought this hotel was a hike out of town but its not. It is within frisbee distance of the walls, also a side access gate, so very convenient. Its a little old fashioned but very nicely kept and the staff were faultless. They dont do food (anymore?) but the breakfast in the large attractive dining room was excellent.

Review 86:The hotel is beautifully renovated and very comfortable. The staff are friendly and helpful. The breakfast is fabulous. And Obidos is, of course, lovely.

Review 87:tv in room small with poor reception.

Review 88:friendly and helpful staff gave good information about location. Excellent buffet breakfast. wold definately use otel again.

Review 89:The breakfast was quite poor given the standing of the place.

Review 90:The location is perfect (a few meters from one of the entrances of Obidos). The originality of the hotel (a former convent). Friendly staff. Confort.

Review 91:A bit pricey. The room was a bit small, and the bed could be better, for a 4-star hotel.

Review 92:Great location, just outside the walls; the staff was super friendly; great breakfast; the building itself was beautiful.

Review 93:The WiFi was limited to a small section of the hotel only.

Review 94:The hotel was conveniently located right outside the walls. The staff were very helpful - especially the porter who helped me with me luggage without me asking and while he was clearly of duty.

Review 95:The flies in our suite (S1) - we had to buy a can of aerosol to deal with them!

Review 96:The friendly, helpful staff on Reception. The supply of fresh towels every day.

Review 97:Poor parking. Breakfast adequate. Bathrooms could be better - empty shower gel dispenser could be removed, toilet roll dispenser very awkward to use. No evening meal available.

Review 98:Friendly staff. Large bedroom and large comfortable bed.

Review 99:Little. Breakfast buffet included an empty tray for eggs(?). Like in all hotels in which we stayed in Portugal no eggs served, which would be nice for a change. Nice breakfast should also include some nice jams in a jar and not jam in plastic packs

Review 100:Lovely building with modernized rooms while keeping its historic beauty. Outside the castle. Parking possible in front/nearby.

Review 101:We couldn't fault the place

Review 102:It was truly beautiful-We had a suite of rooms, very well equipped. The staff were out-standing, well informed and very courteous. The breakfast was lovely. A magical experience!

Review 103:Everything was good. The location is excellent: just near the entranceto the city. As the hotel was redesigned from the monastery building theinterior is very autentic. It's an excellent point to stay for yourrelaxing holliday in Obidos.

Review 104:The doors of the rooms are poor. They are load by themselves, and you can clearly hear everything outside (and from other rooms). Room could be a bit cleaner. The breakfast was not that great, poor coffee, orange lemonade and the croissants.... There were some 15-20 of them, 90% burnt. We only got an eatable one on request.

Review 105:The concept and setup of the hotel is very nice. They have a beautiful garden/terrace and a cosy common room. There are a number of restaurants nearby and the old town is round the corner.

Review 106:We found black hairs in the bathroom. But we are with my mother - blond. It was disgusting.

Review 107:The place is quiet, staff is friendly. Breakfast is excellent

Review 108:The building is beatiful and so well renovated, to preserve the original features but to ensure comfort for the guests. The staff were friendly and very helpful. We shall definately go again.

Review 109:We like historic lodgings but this was very dark and a little dreary I'm afraid. Staff was ok but not personable.

Review 110:Location was good, room was spacious and comfortable

Review 111:Just warning .... As an hotel in a old city NO LIFT just stairs ... which staff will help you

Review 112:Very close to the walls, large room size and bedroom also. Staff excelent

Review 113:As always in Portuguese buildings of this vintage a liitle cool at first but the heaters did warm the room nicely.

Review 114:Magnificent building and presentation of the rooms make this a memorable hotel stay. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. The included buffet breakfast was first class and much better than most offered in Portugal. We would recommend to all mature travellers.

Review 115:It was difficult to park - as we were close to the castle and there was an event on - the Chocolate Festival - so we did expect problems.

Review 116:The hotel had character. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Our room was large with a private terrace. Internet access was user friendly. Breakfast was very good.

Review 117:It is located in one of the most beautifull historic villages inPortugal. Very well preserved, clean, and with very interestingrestaurants and shops. Xerry is the traditional drinks of the regionwith the name of the village itself. Very quiet place and surroundings, near fishing villages by the sea. Fantastic place to stay for a shortterm trip. The Hotel is fantastic, very clean, very polite staff and ina easy access location. No parking, because it is in an old historicvillage, but easy reachable in the surroundings. I'll stronglyrecomend. Fantastic week end.

Review 118:Cleanness, courtesy, breakfast. All people here are very friendly and willing to help for anything. Place is ideal for a romantic escape in a quiet and magic location. Chilled sparkling wine included.

Review 119:We booked a romantic package with wine included we had to go to reception to request it but in fairness they had allowed us to check in early. The reason i marked this down is ants in the bedroom no 11 they tried to sort while we were out for dinner but to no avail.

Review 120:This hotel is a nice traditional hotel but with some modern touches wifi not available in rooms but ok in the bar which has a huge log fire there was no restaurant open when we visited hotel is out side the city but there is a small gate into the city nearby which saves a long walk uphill breakfast was nice with a good selection. Would try elsewhere next time.

Review 121:Good location, just outside old city walls. Friendly, helpful staff who offered good restaurant suggestions. Similar in style to a Parador/Pousada, but less expensive (and without the attached restaurant).

Review 122:The location was magnificent--right up against the wall of the medieval city of Obidos. We walked the cobblestone streets, shopped in the stores, and explored the castle and ate delicious food. A great atmosphere and friendly hotel with a lot of ambiance.

Review 123:Spacious and nicely decorated room with a balcony in a historical buidling. Spotless and beatifully decorated bathroom. Very convenient location for visiting the medieval town of Obidos. Excellent service, helpful staff make you feel welcome.

Review 124:Parking in the street can be quite difficult but there is a large parking at around 200m.

Review 125:Location is perfect, hotel is really authentic, very nice, the staff is very friendly and helpfull. Nice restaurants and bars really close to the hotel.

Review 126:Very charming hotel with a very nice historic feel to it. Perfect for a stay when visiting the medieval fair (which was great fun). Very friendly and helpful staff, would definetly recommend both the hotel and town for a visit. Good value for money as well.

Review 127:Although not within the city walls, this place still has a greatlocation and was so much cheaper than anything inside the walls. Thestaff was great and helpful. Good dinner recommendations.
