Reviews for Oriana at the Topaz Hotel
Review 1:their was no good facilities to stay at the hotel receptionist was nice but she had to make it as a bar tender and receptionist their was no food to buy accept from vendil machine .
Review 2:the room was clean
Review 3:Not all kitchen tools was in a good working condition. In fact toaster needed some fixing before it could be used.
Review 4:Staff accommodated our requests - quiet room and spacious bath. The cleaning lady was very friendly and made sure that the room was clean with fresh bath towels every day.
Review 5:The hotel was in the back streets where there were an unusually high number of massage parlours. The restaurant was situated in the main hotel and access was through a dimly lit underpass.
Review 6:Although very basic the rooms were clean.
Review 7:Uncomfortable beds a/c that smells and was warm Definately not a 4 star as advertised
Review 8:Easy to book at short notice big round balcony but that's where it ends
Review 9:Nasty bathroom Rust on bathroom faucets, Shower curtain had what appeared to be blood on it. Paper thin walls can hear everything around you. When asked for quite area we were placed next to kids on a class trip who were not being supervised and security knocked on our door at 0100 when we said it was to loud.
Review 10:People at the front service counter were really helpful and comforting. Breakfast at the Topaz was good. Room was clean.
Review 11:Let's start from the worst thing. The air-conditioning mentioned in the description did not work at all. There is "central air-conditioning" which means that you can NOT control it yourself. The hotel only switchs it on for a few hours during the day. They say it is a 6 hour period but it is not. During the night, it was almost impossible to fall asleep. You can choose the temperature from 5 degrees Celsius up to 25 degrees but whatever you choose has no impact on the temperature coming from the A/C. But very interesting thing is that in the reception, the A/C was working wonderfully. All day and all night, whey had absolutely pleasant environment down in the reception. Second thing is that when we came home, all our clothes smelled terrible. I put my T-shirts to the washing machine three times and I couldn't get rid of that smell. Third thing in my list is the swimming pool. There was so much chlorine inside and eve though the pool was supposed to be open until 7 pm, it happened twice or three times that we couldn't get there at 5. We were told it was because it was being cleaned, which I don't get because the pool man could do that at 7 pm. And I also want to mention that this hotel is not a 4-star hotel. I have been to a 4-star hotels before and I have never seen such a rust in the bathroom for example. By this last sentence I do NOT recommend this hotel to anyone who doesn't want to spend their money for such a bad hotel. Although I know this might be only my reason and other people could have different opinion. So, it depends only on your judgement if you want to believe my personal opinion or you will give this hotel a try.
Review 12:Staff crew very helpful!
Review 13:If I could pick the hotel up and drop it in a spot down by the sea so we could have sea views also, then it would be perfect. It looks dodgy all around the streets of the hotel, however its completely safe and never had any trouble. No other complaints.
Review 14:Our room was big and spacious with a kitchenette, such good value for money, cleaned every day, nice roof top pool which was empty and had to ourselves most days...Anna, the front desk staff was so helpful, she helped us out a lot and in fact couldn't do enough for us, great customer care. Was in a walking distance of 10 minutes to most local attractions, also, the open top bus tour bus stop was just opposite the topaz, which of course you can also use the facilities of. You get what you pay for so don't expect a 5* hotel, but you get great value for money.
Review 15:Rooms are very very dated and run down. There is no parking at the hotel or anywhere in a 10 block radius Like going back in time 40 years This wouldn't have been 4* even then
Review 16:All the staff on the front desk were very nice and helpful
Review 17:- no place for bikes+ some members of staff quite rude while others agreed to bring the bikes - a lot of loud Russian teenagers misbehaving at reception - this wouldn't have been a problem if we the hotel staff had been ready to meet our expectations (above); either you keep all standards or just some.
Review 18:clean rooms + comfy beds+ kitchen equipment
Review 19:Very friendly and helpful staff. We had only one claim and they solved that on that day. The buffet dinner is recommended. Wide range of delicious food only in good price.
Review 20:-The lobby bar should have been open from 3-late. 3 out of 5 nights it wasn't open at all or just for an hour or two. -Wifi is free but only available in the Lobby -Breakfast is not edible. Coffee comes from vending machines and scrambled eggs are manufactured. -The staff in the adjunct hotel (where you have to go to get breakfast) was rude -The showers trickle. It takes forever to wash shampoo out of your hair -Basically, it isn't worth the money
Review 21:The rooms were clean and the location is good.
Review 22:The kettle didn't work. The central air-condition was a bit old-fashined to manage the real heat days.
Review 23:The roof pool is just amazing. Very good and clean water in the pool. Friendly and professional staff. Value-for-money Calm atmosphere compared to the sister hotel Topaz.
Review 24:Air condition in my room was leaking. Didn't get info about the local bus network
Review 25:I will like to mention the names of some of the front of house staff at the Oriana Hotel who made our one week stay wonderful. These people are Anna, Day Receptionist; Andrew, night receptionist, Oksana, Day Receptionist and Angel, night receptionist. All of these guys were wonderful and made very good impression about the Hotel. Thank you guys.
Review 26:The previous occupants of the room we got when we arrived had smoked in the room and the smell was really bad. It was a no-smoking room so the previous guests had violated the rules. Unfortunately all rooms were occupied so we could not switch to any other room that night. With the help of the staff we tried to remove the smell with a room freshener spray, unfortunately without success. The next day we got a new room which did not smell at all so the staff were really helpful. In the new room the air condition was not working so the night was pretty terrible since there was a heat way during our stay and the temperature in the room was around 40 degrees Celsius with high humidity. The day after we heard that the whole building had problems with the air conditioning unit so it was not limited to our room. Once again the staff was very helpful and provided us with a mobile fan which at least helped to get the air in the room moving. During the last 3 nights of our 7 night stay the A/C worked very well. A big plus to the staff who were very friendly and helpful at all times. The locks on the balcony doors are a bit dangerous. I actually managed to lock myself out and my wife had to rescue me with the help of the reception. :) For me that was not a big deal but if you are stuck out there in the sun by yourself it could unpleasant. We do also not recommend the breakfast at the Topaz Hotel. It was pretty boring and tasteless. Instead head down to the city center and choose from many different restaurant often cheaper than the hotel breakfast.
Review 27:The hotel and the rooms are very clean throughout which is a big plus. The balconies are very big and the pool on top of the building is fantastic. The pools at the other hotels are very crowded but the pool on top of the roof is very big and many times you can have it to yourself. All in all you get good value for your money. We booked very late during the main season so i guess the price normally is a lot lower than what we paid and if that is the case it is a great hotel. The location is also decent with a 10 minute walk to the city and shore. You can take a swim pretty much everywhere since there are stairs leading from the cliffs into the water so make sure to always have your swimwear with you. Even if you take a trip to Valletta you can take a spontaneous swim in the ocean. All in all we recommend this hotel due to it's location, the friendly and helpful staff and the value you get for your money.
Review 28:The area outside of the hotel was squalid with dog dirt everywhere, it was also slightly threatening with youths grouped on the street corners. We didn't feel really safe although being in our 70's that could just be our age.. The hotel advised adequate catering facilities but there was no kettle, and if you wanted one (as one does) there was an additional daily charge..? Also there was no iron. Other than this the catering facilities were not great, but sufficed. Expensive for room only.
Review 29:Amazingly clean, wonderful friendly staff, lovely comfy bed and a fantastic very spacious balcony.
Review 30:There was no washing up liquid, sponge or sharp knives in the self catering facilities which meant we had to buy them for our very short stay. Would have appreciated these small touches.
Review 31:Very friendly staff, messed up a taxi booking but sorted it efficiently, gave a free breakfast and taxi refund. Hotel was good value for money and room was a good size - nice sofa and table and chairs
Review 32:I had two main issues, 1. Upon arrival and opening the fridge I found there to be mold in the fridge. 2. I found it ridiculous that in my room I had a kettle however simce it was with a 2 pin plug and I couldn't plug it in that I had to go and 'buy' the use of a kettle from reception.
Review 33:Breakfast
Review 34:No room cleaning and had to ask for towel breakfast service is pore to say the least queueing and English had more grease than john travolta beds are ok so is the shower
Review 35:The free wifi lasted about 10mins even in public areas, it was cheaper just to use the EE roaming charges. The roof top pool was freezing and very basic, not really suitable for children. The indoor pool was nice, though actually through an underground passage to the Topaz hotel next door.
Review 36:We looked for a good little self catering apartment style hotel room and this room fitted just what we were looking for, and the location suited us too. The cleaning staff were fantastic and very polite. Get to know the bus network and you can get just about anywhere in Malta for E1.50. Good local tour operators to get across to Comino and Gozo for day trips too.
Review 37:keeping peace and order in corridors during the night was absent. Drunk people just shouted and banged on walls from 2 till 5 in the morning
Review 38:The room was good and cheap
Review 39:Parking in the area is difficult, sometimes we had to park far away. Facilities of the hotel look old and worn.
Review 40:Large room with four beds, AC. Friendly staff.
Review 41:The chatter of guests in next room could be heard as if they were in our room!
Review 42:Staff helpful and friendly. Bed very comfortable. Cleanliness excellent. Balcony massive! All in all a great value for money hotel in the heart of St Paul's.
Review 43:Having to go to next door hotel for breakfast. WiFi only in reception Street parking available but a lot of apartments/ hotels in the area so get in early
Review 44:Reasonably central
Review 45:The sink in the bathroom did not empty, it was full of foul smelling water. I locked us out of the room, we went out onto the balcony and I closed the door because we had the air conditioning on, the door locked and we couldn't get back in, I had to shout down to pedestrians and ask them to go into the hotel and get someone to rescue us, this was very embarrassing.
Review 46:It was nice and quiet
Review 47:Hotel straight from the 80s, facilities shared together with Topaz were pretty gross (especially breakfast, and I would not risk getting into those pools). Bed sheets seen better days. No minibar and the in-room kitchen was not the best example of appropriate sanitation. Shower had very little water pressure. In the end I was happy to be back in my own home.
Review 48:Staff at Oriana was friendly and helpful. Rooms kept in ok cleaniness on a day to day basis.
Review 49:Shower Leaked Bed mattress was very old and uncomfortable. Hotel need a revamp Staff did not speak English clearly.
Review 50:Breakfast was good lots of variety and plenty of it. Had 2 different pools you can use 1 on the roof that was very quite and quite nice and one across the road at the Topaz that was much larger and better for young families but also quite crowded Rooms are very large with large balcony Location was good handy too a lot of tourist info car hire and buses
Review 51:Very noisey. People have reviewed that you need to ask for a quiet room. 6 out if our nights, we were woken by the cleaning staff at 8.30, the walls are pretty thin so we could here our neighbours tv at that time, plus we were the room on the 4 floor 4485 right by the lift! So if you want a lay in, you must request a quiet room
Review 52:The hotel had recently had a refurb. The roof pool was very nice, and the overall appearance was new and crisp. The room we had good kitchen facilities.
Review 53:noise from the outside - loud bad music from neighbouring hotels, dilapidated bathroom
Review 54:large room, comfy beds, nice staff, good breakfast, location in a very centre of Buggiba
Review 55:Although we only encountered her once, upon arrival, the foreign receptionist was leaning towards the rude side by her lack of smile, no eye contact and was not interested in what we had to say but just to get her job done and not because she was busy either. All the rest of the staff was excellent.
Review 56:Oriana at the Topaz gives you all the facilities of the Topaz hotel, including it's pool ect. but more quiet and reserved. Their rooftop pool is just excellent so we did not even bother to go to the other hotel to use their facilities.
Review 57:The opening hours of the swimmingpool, was only availiable for people who stay in the hotel all the day. It close at 17:00. Free Wifi signal is only availiable in the reception.
Review 58:The hotel was quiet and clean. Staff was kindly and answer every question we made. Installations of the TOPAZ hotel was availiable to use, for Oriana customers.
Review 59:The pool closed at 5.30 in the evening. No Wi-Fi. Safe and Fridge had to be paid extra for. Room air conditioning noisy.
Review 60:Friendly helpful staff. Quiet location 10 minutes walk from sea front and bars and restaurants.
Review 61:Absolute nightmare trying to park! Spent 1 1/2 hrs trying to park car. Don't take a car! Wish the pool was open after 5.30pm but understood it had to be cleaned.
Review 62:Asked for quiet rooms and got them. Loved the roof pool. Staff very pleasant and helpful.
Review 63:We did not have a minifridge in the room in which to store drinks, however there was a vending machine in the lobby. The lifts were a bit slow and scary at times.
Review 64:The staff was really friendly especially the night reception.
Review 65:For the price the Rooms are in need of a proper clean & upgrade! We didn't have a functioning Aircon so it was boiling, bathroom was falling apart & shower head didn't work. We basically had to bath instead of shower. Room also smelled old & floors dirty. Staff could Barely put two words together in English, let alone speak maltese. Staff had no knowledge of surrounding area & couldn't tell us where things where around us... This is either due to the fact that they didn't know or they didn't speak English. Very Poor Hotel! Not value for money & photos don't seem to paint an accurate picture.
Review 66:Location was ok & lobby was nice.
Review 67:Under NO circumstances would this be a 4* hotel. The hotel is quite far from the nice beaches: Mellieha Bay, Paradise Bay, Golden Bay. In August it would take you 30 mins to get to the nearest one, if you are lucky and the bus is not already full. The room was not very clean when we got there. Smells like mold in the hallways and in the rooms as well. Internet is not provided by the hotel and you have to buy a card which, according to the receptionist, works all over Malta - worst 15 euro spent ever.
Review 68:The staff of the hotel were doing their best.
Review 69:A bit noisy, because of thin walls. Small stream of water in the shower. Once we saw a cockroach, but the hotel immediately took care of it. St. Pauls Bay isn't that special, but it's easy to take the bus to other places.
Review 70:Spacious room. Clean. Well air conditioned. Friendly people.
Review 71:I loved oriana hotel so much, we are mature couple and we had studio room.it has everything in it..very quiet room and the best location. Thanks to all the staff, it was very helpful. Well done!
Review 72:Besides the good cleaning of the room as estated, the fridge was dirty and it took two days to have it clean to use it. The swimming pool closes too early.
Review 73:The room and toilet were very clean. The cost of breakfast, if not booked with the room, is very expensive.
Review 74:The breakfast at the Topaz hotel is amazing together with the well heated indoor pool and lovely outdoor pool also the reception are very welcoming would like to say hi to Salvatore, Antonio, Jasel , Andrew and john thanks for all :) and at the end Mr. Kenneth Debono who is ready to here and help in all your needs
Review 75:- Air Conditioning was not really cooling - Parking was a bit of a problem
Review 76:- Friendly Staff - Exceptional Breakfast - Cater for Special Dietary Requirements - Spacious Room
Review 77:We had a problem with cockroaches in the room and also heard other people complain about it. The night staff, although they try to help you, do not speak or barely speak English
Review 78:Lovely and calm pool on the rooftop of the hotel. Good breakfast buffet with a lot of options. Tables are cleaned quickly and food is refilled quickly as well. Comfortable beds Lovely balcony This hotel has a lot of potential, if only they cleaned it a little better and called an exterminator for the cockroaches.
Review 79:Value for money was really poor. Just we arrived we find out our bed is broken (I mean a lot, unable to sleep on) so we asked maid to tell somebody to fix it. In few mins came some ladies with new bed but they said it was maybe us who broke it, because my partner is really tall (seriously, we checked in 5 mins ago and they are blame us from breaking bad). Also neighborhood of hotel was really loud till midnight. Outside pool was opened just till 5:30 and inside pool was super small, more like pool for children. Also see was 10 mins walking away from hotel. I would never rate this hotel 4*, 3* max. For 60e I would expect at least free wifi but you have to also pay for it and it's not working very well. I must say we were really disappointed. It what the worse (and most expensive) accommodation we had during our stay on Malta. We will definitely travel to Malta again, but for sure we will not choose this hotel again.
