Reviews for Gillieru Harbour Hotel
Review 1:the room at 7 pm wasn't ready. i booked a double bed and i got two single beds. dust and fluff under the bed. no heating working in the room on November 28th !
Review 2:sea view breakfast
Review 3:Rooms are smallish, and remember to ask for the remote for the TV at check in, as they will not tell you you need one when you check in
Review 4:A reasonable hotel, nice restaurant, pleasant area
Review 5:I thought there could have been a manager present just seem to be left to get on with it. In all of my 12days I didn't see one. Lady on reception not friendly, but gentleman really helpful
Review 6:I liked the location of the hotel.
Review 7:air con was not adjustable in rooms although we were provided with an additional fan Wi fi access restricted to only reception and bar areas, not in rooms or by pool Hair dryer cut out after a few seconds but again we were given a replacement after requesting one
Review 8:Position of hotel particularly pool area adjacent to sea and harbour Rooms serviced every day
Review 9:hotel needs a massive investment . Pool area, dirty/damaged tiles... Even wires showing where lift button used to be..breakfast was disappointing ...overall not worth the money..
Review 10:Location
Review 11:Breakfast selection could be improved a bit. Cleaning could be improved as well, from simple things little glass entrance door to mirrors in the elevator to some parts in the bedroom/bathroom.
Review 12:Hotel with a very nice sea view and in a good position in St. Pawls Bay. Easy to walk around, and bus stop right next to the hotel. Great staff at the reception (Carlo and John were always helpful).
Review 13:the room not clean and when arrive we didit have tv channels and we ask the recepion to change the room and he said no or one without balcony when i paid for a balcony when i booked and we booke double bed and we found 2 single bed and when we go to sleep the cocroc is wake up is not worth it the hotel
Review 14:i like the pool and the room but is not clean
Review 15:Food was poor. A little dated in places and quite noisy on the road side however with air con you could keep the door shut.
Review 16:Great setting and brilliant air con. The bathroom was amazing and spotless.
Review 17:The breakfast left a lot to be desired, didn't bother with it in the end. It's also a shame that the room does not come with tea or coffee facilities
Review 18:The room was very basic, but clean and comfortable with an excellent view.
Review 19:Hotel Old and out dated No car park Lifts slow and don't work properly Beds uncomfortable Over priced for Malta
Review 20:The views and position of the Hotel
Review 21:The old furniture. Wet floor of the bathroom because the water from the shower dabbles on the floor. O saw the cockroach on the floor of the reception.
Review 22:The hotel is on the coust of the Mediterranean sea. Large room.
Review 23:No tea making facilities,a fridge did not work properley, the lift did not work well. Also no towels supplied for pool no shower screen or curtain water went all over floor.i
Review 24:The pool was good,
Review 25:Location was away from the main centre, but was a lovely stroll around the harbour front and then the promenade, to get there without going up/down hills as you would from many other hotels in Bugibba.
Review 26:Hotel restaurant was very pricy and the breakfast soon became repetitive and a bit dry/uninspiring. Also we received two single beds instead of a double, and when raised, the response was to dress the bed as a double. This wasn't ideal, nor particularly comfortable, especially for a couple.
Review 27:Location was amazing. Quiet and away from the busy section of coast, but still very close and opposite two amazing restaurants. Pool was great, with beautiful views and tour boats operate 100m from the hotel.
Review 28:I booked a double room, single occupancy and a balcony with a view of the bay. When I arrived there was a single bed in the room. To see the bay would require a neck like a giraffe. My friend booked a similar room. He had two single beds pushed together to make his double. On the second day as we were at the pool they came into the room and took one of the beds without asking. He went to reception and told them that this was unacceptable and their recation was one like we were doing something wrong. On the fourth day they came in again and removed a couch from the room. What??? The pool bar is very minimal/dismal and so is the menu and the staff aren't one bit friendly. Like they don't want to be there. Ordering a taxi from reception normally takes 20 - 30 minutes to arrive. The mornings are very loud, a lot of banging doors and the sound of furniture being moved, surprise surprise...Ironing has to be done beside the lift, there's an iron for your entire floor. No free wifi in the rooms. €6 per day in you room. This hotel could be so much more beacuse it's on a beautiful site.
Review 29:This is not a 4 star hotel, It is 2 stars in Western European Standars. If you want a good holiday avoid this place -Balcon door didnt close. There was a 5 cm open part - balcon on a noisy street, felt like the bus is going over our bed - bed was soo bad after 2 days it felt like we need a spine transplant - fridge didnt work, but according to the staff that is the way its supposed to be - aircon doesnt work during the day, and during the night it automatically turns on and off - furniture old and worn, paint missing, and see water leeks all around - elevator randomly works - wifi only in lobby and only when its empty Overall we left after 2 days and went to another hotel for the remaining 5 days Of course we didnt get any refund, they charge the ammount the minute you check in, before you see the room... disaster
Review 30:Breakfest
Review 31:The hotel needs a refurbishment of the lobby, elevators and sun deck (beds and umbrellas especially). Rooms ok but could use some attention too. Relatively high prices in the pool bar.
Review 32:Amazing view and newly renovated bathroom. Can really recommend the sea-view rooms. Good and powerful air conditioning and good size salt water pool.
Review 33:Lots of young guests made quite a bit of noise. Some in particular playing music on balcony until 4AM, although staff did address this when asked. Aircon a bit noisy, but a necessary evil. Parking a nightmare at weekends. Usual issue of 'towels on sunbeds' before breakfast! What time do these people get up?
Review 34:Superb view from seaview rooms
Review 35:No variety of food for breakfast (the same each morning). Maid once entered my room without permission while I was in shower. Wi-fi works only in public areas which is not very convinient.
Review 36:Hotel staff is excellent and ready to help. Location of the hotel is very convinient.
Review 37:The breakfast is terrible & strange. Really easy to sort out too. Simple eggs, sausage bacon. Real orange juice, better fresh fruit selection, some pastries maybe. Dry cocktail sausages, Mash potatoes, chili and lettuce a bit odd. But that would be my only reservation about hotel.
Review 38:This is a lovely hotel in a great location. It is very clean, staff are nice, air con good. Rooms are modern, bathroom nice. Could improve wifi so available in rooms.
Review 39:WIFI didn't reach the room so only in foyer area.
Review 40:Roof top pool, location which is away from the main "tourist zone" but close enough to stroll to it is ideal.
Review 41:Malta was my 75th country visited. That special feeling was reduced since I had to pay cash for the stay as both my cards were not accepted by the machine at the reception(I successfully used the same card for buying the return bus shuttle service at the airport an hour before and then later at the hard rock cafe!) That badly affected my cash level as I have been away from home for the last one month. The next evening I was almost cashless and decided to get hot water to make my own coffee and Asian noodles. I walked into the hotel restaurant without thinking and went straight to get a glass of hot water. A waitress stopped me, literally took away the glass from my hand and gave me a lecture to buy hot water at the bar. Never have I been openly humiliated in my life for a simple hot water incident. I think she would not have said those things if I were Caucasian as I am an Asian.
Review 42:Location very convenient for island cruising etc since many big boats are operating nearby. Malta is now my top fifteen countries ovisited, and in this 30-day trip, my last country after visiting Mauritius, La Réunion, Turkey, Algeria and Tunisia earlier.
Review 43:Even if we asked for a double bed, we have received a twin bed with a blanket to cover them. Not enough! Awful breakfast. If you like eggs that are not well cooked, beans, spinach, than you are in the right place. Reminded me of the second hand motels in UK regarding the food. We have actually refused to eat breakfast and rather spend money on a nearby restaurant.
Review 44:Locations, especially a room with sea view. Quiet rooms.
Review 45:Hotel looks shabby, decoration very outdated. The hotel badly needs a renovation. The majority of the sunbeds by the swimming pool are broken.Never again I will book this hotel.
Review 46:Rather tired rooms, TV only one channel for English speakers, grubby fridge, no tea/coffee making facilities in room. One iron per floor which needed cleaning.
Review 47:Wonderful views, very helpful and friendly staff.
Review 48:The breakfast was awful, not enjoyable at all. I woul recommend finding somewhere else locally to have breakfast
Review 49:The room was very clean and the view was excellent, the facilities were also good.
Review 50:the two lifts never seemed to be working at the same time, when the lift was working ,it had a mind of its own, if you wanted to go down, it would go up, and the noise from them would keep us awake till they stopped being used, they really do need looking at !!!!!!!
Review 51:good size rooms that looked over the bay, good standard of cleanliness, very helpful staff that sorted things out there and then.
Review 52:Air conditioning did not seem to work (fan blew tepid air all night; never as cool as in the hallways or outside) Free breakfast was the quality of a free breakfast.
Review 53:Very friendly staff, and very reasonable rate. Great location if visiting St. Paul's bay.
Review 54:I had to work a little bit, but there is no internet, at least on the upper floors. One can only have access to internet in the lobby. Would be great to have more international business channels on TV like CNBC, Bloomberg or similar
Review 55:Location, pool
Review 56:Bedroom was right next to the lift which I can only describe as sounding what I can imagine to be the rumblings of a whales stomach. Having said that it did not keep us awake at night. We only had breakfast at this hotel, which was pretty mediocre and needs vast improvement. One star for that out of five for that. We did think of having an evening meal there but the menu was not appealing much of it being with chips and dessert was pretty naf. A piece of fruit, banana or fruit cocktail one night and fruit cocktail or a piece of fruit another night.
Review 57:Enjoyed the view having paid more to upgrade for a seaview which was absolutely stunning. Staff were fantastic and would give them a full five stars for how good they were, especially the guy on reception who usually works nights and the barman, who was very polite and very helpful. Close to other ameneties, such as the town of St Pauls, Buggiba and eateries/shops (all within walking distance and bus stop right next to the hotel for Bugggiba and the capital Valletta.
Review 58:Bed had two single mattresses of different depths! Pillows were atrocious - very old and very lumpy. No tea/coffee making facilities.
Review 59:Hotel Location was good. View from room was nice, (we had a corner room with 2 balconies), modern wet room, helpful staff.
Review 60:The quality of breakfast was poor and the rooms look tired. The hotel needs a major refurbishment.
Review 61:The Hotel was in a good location, with wonderful views and the staff were very friendly.
Review 62:Wi-Fi only available in reception area Had to ask for TV remote from reception TV not tuned Safe box is room costs Euro4 per day...ugh! Make sure you request sea view with booking, otherwise they off-load you with a street view... Only one lift working; very slow
Review 63:Location location...! Rooms adequately furnished Bathroom recently renovated :) Try the La Rosi restaurant opposite... fantastic!
Review 64:Asked for a large bed, instead found a two singe beds. Bed sheets need replacement. ASAP. Pillows very hard. Asked for sea view room instead given a street view room.& very noisy. During the night the air conditioning system was set by the hotel on heating system only. When contacted the receptionist he advice to open the window. B/fast poor. Dinner no choice just set menu.
Review 65:the room itself was very clean.
Review 66:The ONLY down side was that there are NO tea/coffee making facilities in the rooms, meaning you have to wait till breakfast to get a decent cuppa or have it from a machine which is NOT to our taste. So if possible please supply this facility for our next visit....
Review 67:The sea and hotel pool views from our room was fabulous, comfortable bed, the food was excellent value for money, friendly helpful staff. public transport bus stop was just a few yards away from hotel, made getting around Malta easy. The taxi booked by the hotel to take us to the airport was clean, comfortable and well driven. An all round great experience thank you....
Review 68:No live entertainment - a very quiet hotel.
Review 69:Nice location in St.Paul's Bay . Swimming-pool . Nice dining-room and nice food . Friendly staff . Large room with a view of the bay . Clean room .
Review 70:Staff,worst ive ever come across, very unhelpful but get this impression from majority of maltease...Breakfast staff and breakfast itself was horrendous,cold....Pool bar was worst food and presentation ever had, cold and massivly overpriced!! Was furious as i took my mother and she didnt enjoy!!! Bed mattress's are 20 yrs old along with pillows and bedding. The lift is on last legs, carpeted up the sides,80s style...Nothing good to say about this hotel except location....Great shame!!
Review 71:location
Review 72:linen and towels grey and tired, pillows lumpy and musty bathroom floor a bit grubby
Review 73:location - the quiet end of Bujibba, right on the bay. local facilities close by friendly staff good shower I'd certainly go back
Review 74:The breakfast was very poor and the breakfast room drab. Would have been better to have a kettle and tea/coffee making facilities. The paint was peeling on the ceiling in the bedroom and shower room
Review 75:The location of the hotel is excellent and the views lovely. The room was comfortable. The shower was good and the rooms were cleaned daily with fresh towels
Review 76:BEDS GETTING UNCOMFORTABLE ,BEDDING WELL USED, CURTAINS VERY DIRTY SHOULD BE CHANGED MORE OFTEN AS SHOULD THE BEDDING, IT WAS TOP AND TAILED ONE DAY DAY. THE BED WAS MADE ONLY THREE TIMES IN 14 DAYS ,AND BUT FOR ONLY HAVING THE RUBBISH BIN EMPTIED EACH DAY WE DID OUR OWN ROOM. THE CATERING HAS A LOT TO BE DESIRED ITS NOT HALF AS GOOD AS IT WAS BEFORE THEY CHANGED IT, ITS VERY IMPERSONAL NOW, ITS LIKE A SELF SERVICE CAFE .I THINK THE WHOLE PLACE IS OVERPRICED .
Review 77:LOCATION AND STAFF
Review 78:we had asked( as special request) to have decaf coffee or decaf capuccino, which was not available. Also didnt like the continuous background sound at night.
Review 79:the maltese bread in the morning was fresh and crispy.
Review 80:Pool deck area, loungers & cushions in need of attention - no signs of cleaning / maintenance daily or otherwise. Restaurant decor / serving style dated as are the staff uniforms.
Review 81:Great location overlooking St Paul's Bay. Several restaurants & bars in immediate vicinity. Only 10 mins walk from more lively Bugibba resort for those who want a bit more night life. Well presented & cleaned daily rooms/ensuites.
Review 82:Disappointed that room fridge was ineffective. No tea/coffee facilities in the room. Lifts have a mind of their own but adds to the adventure.
Review 83:The location and view in St Pauls Bay is quite superb. Good restaurants within easy walking distance. Very good breakfast and friendly staff. Good pool facilities.
Review 84:Very attentive staff, and very friendly. Incredible location on the sea front! And once there it only costs €7 per night to upgrade to a sea view room!
Review 85:Orange water instead of juice. Self service tea and coffee as not safe carrying hot cups without lids. Lack of fresh fruit, cereal poor quality, seems they have cut the breakfast budget quite drastically.
Review 86:Cleanliness Friendliness Air con
Review 87:It's the typical hotel that maybe 20 years ago could call itself '4 star' but could not be best described as 2 star. Everything is a bit run down. Internet only at the reception area, breakfast in a depressing breakfast room. This all wouldn't be that bad if it wasn't for the receptionist who late at night was flirting with me and my sister very inappropriately and then the next day wouldn't help us with anything (we asked to print one page and he said it wasn't possible, we wanted to make one quick phone call from reception and he said we couldn't). Yes it's cheap but I think there are better places for this price.
Review 88:The location was good and the pool looked nice
Review 89:The breakfast was poor. I don't eat English breakfast normally so I haven't anything to eat except oranges, melon and coffee.
Review 90:The location is lovely and the view is amazing :) The double room is very spacious and handy.
Review 91:none
Review 92:I’ve just returned from the trip and would like to recommend everybody not to take into consideration all the previous non-satisfactory reviews about the hotel. I’m really very glad that I didn’t rebook the hotel for another one because of all that non-satisfactory reviews about the hotel. I loved the hotel. The hotel is in a terrific location, right on the sea front and very close to the central part of the promenade, but still in this quiet area of Malta, only 10 minute leisurely walk to all the restaurants along the lovely promenade of the St. Paul’s Bay. Good for a base for a long break in case you needed a quality place for a while. Sea view rooms have got a great location views from balcony over bay are super boat trips/ valletta bus / excellent local restaurant all on doorstep. It has got lovely settings as well as breakfasts are also good enough. It is really very good for having quite and lovely leisure as well as for travelling all over the island (bus stop is also near by). My special gratitude to Maryrose, a really very friendly reception lady, who is always ready to help and make advices. Gillieru Harbour Hotel, thank you for my wonderful vacations. Malta, I love you!
Review 93:The balcony never gets clean. The room needs better furniture., not enough room for your cloths. The bath room has a shower, toilet & sink, no vanita or shelve .
Review 94:the room is clean
Review 95:Biggest let down was lack of wifi in room although funnily enough I got used to it and just kept going up and down the stairs to keep fit and use the wifi in the lobby. The groups of younger tourists being a little noisy in the lobby but no big deal. The sunburnt British tourists were funny.
Review 96:Loved the position, it was just perfect, loved the surrounding areas, the swimming, the cheap eats and drinks nearby and the VIEW was breathtaking. Breakfast although not hip was adequate and plenty of choice, the Matese bread with cheese my favourite.
Review 97:No internet access in rooms just in the reception area, no dedicated parking place. Sometimes you should park far away from the hotel, it's not so fun. Bathroom was dirty when we arrived. Breakfast was the same all day (bean, French toast etc) without any changes, it was really pain to eat after a week. The door loudly closing, you couldn't rest after 8.
Review 98:Very close to the city and harbor.
Review 99:The breakfast was not great (come on guys - buy real juice!). Some of our colleagues were less lucky on the cleanliness aspect. Perhaps the area isn't for everyone; it's more than verging on cheesy.
Review 100:Slightly rugged, yet charming location. Good air-conditioning and shower, sweet little seawater pool.
Review 101:The first thing that we were annoyed about was the fact that when we entered the hotel reception the receptionist stated that we were customers from bookings.com. When this is stated usually we are given an inferior room. The pool is too small... not enough deckchair for the guests. A/C was extremely noisy and the switch (hot/cold) was broken thus only hot air was coming out of it. The toilet flushing at times remained empty and we had to fill in the toilet bin with water to use as a flushing. The shower mixer when opened on cold water, boiling water came out so much that I got scalded and took ages to adjust. Breakfast was horrendous... stale bread, overcooked sausages, half cooked fried eggs and limited variation of items . After we checked in an started to settle down in the room, 2 different housekeepers knocked once and burged into the room for the fact that the room was not totally ready. The following day we left the room at around 9am and up to 3pm the room was not ready, we had to find a housekeeper ourselves to give us fresh towels.
Review 102:The hotel is has an amazing sea view.
Review 103:Lifts don't always work not a problem for us but would be for some also booked boat trip via reception had to pay extra when got to Hornblower but minor niggles
Review 104:A great location views from balcony over bay are super boat trips/ valletta bus /da rosi (excellent local restaurant) all on doorstep. Hotel much better than some previous reviews have said lovely setting & breakfast not bad!
Review 105:the door to the balcony was extremely hard to open and close, it screeched every time we opened or closed it and we had to struggle with it. request to front desk for fixing the problem went unheeded. when we arrived, we were promised hair dryer the next day but it never arrived the next day and when we enquired at the front desk there was a different person at the reception whose answer was; "i didn't promise it to you so it isn't my fault". This answer pictures exactly the way things are at this hotel, each one seems to be working for himself.the bathroom although seems to have been renovated, didn't have a shelf to put the toilet bag, the toilet paper holder is not stable and falling downwards. the shower doesn't have a curtain and the water from the shower is flowing to the door, the door has swollen up from absorbing the water so it's scrapping the floor when you open and close it. there is absolutely no ventillation in the bathroom/toilet, it is very uncomfortable to enter after it has been used by other person. also, the dampness is being absored by the ceiling, which is causing the paint from the ceiling to peel off. there's no privacy when you sit on the balcony because there is no separating screen or wall between the balconies. in the dining room, the waiters are taking away your plates even before you finish what is on your plate. when we left, we booked a taxi from the front desk. it was very late in arriving and when it arrived, it wasn't a taxi at all but someone trying to make an extra buck (probably with connections to the front desk or maybe the manager), his car was very small with no trunk so he put our suitcases on the back seat and my wife had to somehow manage to sit stiffly in one corner till the airport at valetta (25 minutes) of course he didn't give us a receipt.
Review 106:This hotel is in a fantastic location, right on the sea front and very close to the central part of the promenade. It also has a swimming pool. However, that is about it because maintenance is completely neglected, seems like the manager has fallen asleep.
Review 107:Poor quality towels and no toiletries. Restaurant and bars closed on the night we stayed
Review 108:Fabulous view. Helpful receptionist
Review 109:Bad Service
Review 110:Good Location
Review 111:No kettle in room
Review 112:Location was great.staff were great. Sea view was awesome.
Review 113:Wonderful staff
Review 114:No towels, room overlooked pool, people staring in room and balcony, only able to sit out after pool area emptied.
Review 115:The hotel sits in a great spot in st julien. Away from all the tourists.. Small property which I like
Review 116:No free wifi in room, only in lobby.
Review 117:Great view and pool. Staff were helpful in calling for taxi.
Review 118:Some of facilities a little tired as though there is not a driving force ensuring good service.
Review 119:Have always loved location and ambiance.
Review 120:It would have been nice to have fresh fruit at breakfast instead of canned.
Review 121:Location.
Review 122:wifi often not working. can also only available in the lobby
Review 123:The last day we left earlier and did not get any breakfast package. That's not correct!
Review 124:Perfect location
Review 125:Mediocre breakfast and having to pay for the use of the Internet in your room was a disgrace for a prestigious hotel.
Review 126:Location and swimming pool.
Review 127:All great
Review 128:Wouldn't stay again nothing nice about it
Review 129:Only thing good wad the view from the sea view room
Review 130:There is where it needs a new refurbishment.
Review 131:The surrounding of the sea and the breeze coming from the sea.
Review 132:WIFI limited to reception, ideally boosed to connect in rooms
Review 133:Hotel is terribly noisy and our room was to close to the elevator which we can hear whenever used
Review 134:The view and location is amazing
Review 135:View from the balcony was great. Staff was friendly and helpful.
Review 136:Services like TV, wifi only at reception.
Review 137:Rooms, location
Review 138:No tea/coffee facilities in room. Air Conditioning unit could not be set below 28C??
Review 139:Very friendly staff, who went out of their way to help.
The Fine Print
