Reviews for Merrijig Inn
Review 1:Nothing
Review 2:Characterful individual Inn with lovely welcoming owners and all staff so friendly Beautiful old fashioned cute rooms- in our case a sitting room as well . Access to larder for fridge/ coffees/teas / biscuits. Great breakfast . Memorable place to stay and opposite waterfront
Review 3:Very small room, but clean and furnished with lovely details. It's a building with history. Just a beautyful place, we woul book it again. Also the restaurant is realy good.
Review 4:Nothing bad.
Review 5:I liked the idea of staying in an "Inn" and we were not disappointed. Several restaurants all within walking distance. Short walk to Griffin Island where we strolled along the groomed path and saw Wullabys grazing just feet away. We stayed in an attic room and it was lovely, reminded me of being back in England. The breakfast that Liz created was amazing; again I felt like I was staying in a quaint part of England with all those british treats. We sat in the garden where we could enjoy our own wine (no corkage charges either). There is complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits any time of day. All in all this little gem is 'homely' making it difficult to leave!
Review 6:Being asked to pay for second cup of coffee and no choice of cooked breakfast. Attic rooms very small. Broken smoke detector, loo roll holder and radio.
Review 7:Location
Review 8:Where do I start? Everything about this property was amazing. We loved absolutely everything, from the cosy attic bedroom to the freshly prepared food made from local produce. The whole feel of the place was extremely cosy and welcoming and the staff were brilliant. We've never stayed in such beautiful, quirky accommodation. We loved the restaurant, the breakfast, the decor and the communal lounge and kitchen. There are too many things to list. We absolutely loved the Merrijig.
Review 9:The novelty and comfort of the inn was amazing! It was a truly unique and cozy experience to stay in the old upstairs rooms and to immerse yourself in the history and charm of the inn as well as the enthusiasm of the staff.
Review 10:Everything was excellent. No complaints.
Review 11:Lovely old inn by the wharf with wonderful gardens. Excellent restaurant for dinner and breakfast. Quiet location.
Review 12:No
Review 13:We having our honeymoon here, stay a night, dinner and breakfast. It was an unforgettable experience, we like this place so much. The room, toilet and bed is quite small, but enough for us Asian. We have a walk at Griffiths Island, saw few wild kangaroos there. Beautiful!
Review 14:Mattress in room 3 was a bit old ans sunken apart from that no complaints, breakfast was great and ample and staff very friendly and helpful
Review 15:Location and cleanliness
Review 16:We were double booked and they didn't have our room, but on a positive we were given an attic room on the house!! Very small, but fairly comfy!!
Review 17:There was one staff member who was lovely! Our room was on the house as they didn't have a booking from bookings.com!!
Review 18:Shower was small but I'm quite tall
Review 19:Staff were brilliant, food in restaurant was incredible, locallyl sourced and cooked with flair. Room was nice, clean and had a good nights sleep
Review 20:Cold welcome on checking in. Bed very hard. No ironing board or tea/coffee making facilities in room. Decor dreary and in need of attention.
Review 21:Lovely coaching inn style building with restaurant quality food (rather than good pub food). The on-line description doesn't fully do it justice. Good location with pleasant walk along the river to Griffiths Island
Review 22:It is a lovely historical inn. We had the garden room which was very large and comfortable. The breakfast was excellent. There was a living area for the guests to share with tea, coffee etc.
Review 23:The internet was terrible. Did not work, asked 3 times for repair not interested. Because of this would not stay again.
Review 24:The Inn was very good. Room good, breakfast very good.
Review 25:If you were really tall or overweight the attic room would be a struggle. Shame on Tuesday the restaurant wasn't open in the evening but there were other good places in Port Fairy.
Review 26:Interesting old buildings circa 1820s that's as early as you get in Victoria and very tastefully renovated. Really close to the river's outlet to the sea so great location and only short walk to Main Street.
Review 27:The water in the shower could have been hotter
Review 28:We had a wonderful meal Sunday night. Breakfast was good. Little touches like a guest kitchen with tea and coffee facilities and home made biscuits is great.
Review 29:Everything was wonderful.
Review 30:Location. Right opposite the wharf and easy access to everything in lovely Pt Fairy. Great food (fresh from the garden) and excellent service.
Review 31:We loved the warm welcome from Sarah and the cosy rooms. Sitting in beautiful garden for afternoon drinks was s treat. Just opposite canal made it perfect for a stroll.
Review 32:Loved staying in this little piece of history, and the food in the restaurant was excellent, along with the service. The only change we would have made would have been to book one of the rooms with a larger bed (we were in the very cute room no.5) and only because hubby is quite tall, and it was not a comfortable sleep for him. I'm a shorty, so I was fine!
Review 33:We stayed in the King Suite which had a separate living room. Everything was well presented, clean and comfortable. I wouldn't sat anywhere else in Port Fairy. The breakfasts were lovely with local and homemade produce and the cooked breakfasts were excellent and just the right size. The restaurant was brilliant.
Review 34:Totally non commercial. Home made food e.g. Duck egg ravioli stuffed with Ling smoked on the premesis.Excellent breakfast with freshly squeezed orange juice, tea cosy on the tea pot to keep it hot and milk from a jug. Old fashioned and just the way we like it.
Review 35:Bottle of complimentary Port was half empty, would rather a full bottle or none at all ( only from a hygiene point of view ) but this was the only point of concern other than that stay was perfect!
Review 36:Staff were very friendly & food was terrific the Breakfast spread was sensational.
Review 37:We got an attic bedroom which was really cute and cosy. However, it did turn out to be a tad too small and tight for us, especially the bathroom and bed. The heater was also much warmer for one side of the bed due to the proximity. Otherwise, a nice homely stay with friendly hosts and strong wifi!
Review 38:The staff is very friendly and the food is superb. Walking distance from Port Fairy Lighthouse, on Griffith Island. We stayed 3 nights and went for long walks every day. The highlight was sitting around the fire at the end of the day.
Review 39:Everything about our stay was lovely! The queen room was spacious and cosy at the same time with lots of homely touches. The staff were delightful and made sure we had everything we needed
Review 40:- Unfortunate issue with upstairs toilet meant we had to leave our quaint little attic room but gained a Queen bed and bath instead!
Review 41:- So much romantic old school character. - Loft room was soo cute and cosy. - Staff were not intrusively "familiar" like B&B's can tend to feel...
Review 42:Incredibly cosy atmosphere, eclectic furnishings, fabulous food. Lovely courtyard with chooks roaming through the veggie patch. A breakfast that was included in the price that was sensationally good.
Review 43:We had a small room in the attic & the steep stair climb was a bit difficult for an arthritic knee. Room we saw downstairs looked roomy and nice.
Review 44:The bed was comfortable and the room was very clean. Good hot breakfast. Appreciated the free Wi Fi.
Review 45:We had the King room. However we had no where to put our small stuff. We also had to keep going into the shared areas to get wine glasses. Only a shared fridge for our white wine, milk we had purchased earlier in the day. Our room should have had a small fridge. My wife has to keep medication in a fridge. We payed $240 for one nights stay plus evening meal. Our bill came to $400 plus. You guys need to sort out the room so that you can put personal items away in the area you are staying have afridge and aTV in the room. Oldy/wordly is one thing but we all live in the 21st century. When I enquired about the evening menu the person was quite abrupt. She told me that there was a new menue each evening so I would have to wait until 530pm to discover the contents. Her tone I found disturbing not freindly at all. She could have mayed the process more of a journey of discovery. If you give off vibes that you dont really like people you are probably in the wrong business!!!
Review 46:Our evening meal and breakfast
Review 47:Slightly inconvenient to not have tea and coffee making facilities in the room (you need to go to the common kitchenette). Unfortunate that the property restaurant is only open between Thursday and Sunday (which meant that we missed eating there). That said, the staff graciously booked us at another joint for what turned out to be a wonderful meal. While the old-worldly and homey appeal is undeniable, minor upkeep interventions would help.
Review 48:The sense of history - Victoria's oldest inn, no less! Inviting common areas. Cosy and homely feel that permeates the property. The attached living room, with a wonderful, mantlepiece-and-chimney-included fireplace! Complementary on-site parking.
Review 49:Very small bedroom and ensuite with no space for any form of seating in the room. However it is realised that there are challenges in providing these facilities in a heritage building.
Review 50:Excellent helpful staff, top quality food in the restaurant, character - filled heritage facility
Review 51:The Inn was completely dark and deserted when we arrived at 8.30pm on a Wednesday. Apparently the Inn does not serve dinner on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, so closes. This was not made clear when booking or when we phoned ahead to inform our arrival time.
Review 52:The King Suite was very spacious and comfortable. The Inn is full of character and unusual features.
Review 53:Nothing bad at all!
Review 54:I loved the warm reception, our ultra-cute attic room, the comfy guests lounge, the homely character of the whole place and the absolutely amazingly good breakfast.
Review 55:The Merrijig manages to achieve a mildly bohemian feel, but the facilities are excellent, with playful details such as a 'privacy' pig to place outside the door if you don't want the room made up and chocolate frogs. The food is excellent, with a creative cooked breakfast option every morning and a top class evening menu which quite clearly has a deserved reputation in Port Fairy. We loved it !
Review 56:Wifi a bit erratic signal depends where you are in the building. Didn't spoil our time though.
Review 57:Lovely large ground floor room overlooking garden which was a welcome oasis. Great restaurant with imaginative menu and beautifully cooked food- expensive but worth it - a real treat! Lots of quirky hand made items and plants around the place making it feel very homey in great way. Staff very welcoming and friendly.
Review 58:The fact that we only stayed one night!
Review 59:Everything was perfect. When we arrived, we learned that we had been given an upgrade. Nice. Proprietor(s): awesome! Food: awesome! Location: awesome! View and surroundings: (you've got it-) awesome!!
Review 60:Staff attention (including room service for an early morning coffee!!) and the simple but well-thought out facilities with reading room and open garden area.
Review 61:Spacious rooms, welcoming atmosphere, friendly guest sitting rooms and use of kitchen - with homemade cookies provided. Delicious, abundant breakfast with home-cooked fruits, yogurt and a different hot dish each day.
Review 62:If you're looking for cheap it's not for you. I would, however, rate the Merrijig as good value.
Review 63:The staff were great. We arrived and had a lovely dinner with great produce and wine. The Merrijig is an old seafarers inn so the rooms are small. In a way that cosines only adds to the charm of the place. A great place to stay in Pt Fairy and I would go again without hesitation.
Review 64:Nothing! We loved everything!
Review 65:Lovely B & B, perfect location. Close to both the beach and the town - easy walking distance. Breakfast was outstanding. Staff were friendly & helpful.
Review 66:Very small room. We have not the space for open our baggage. Maybe the room was about 10mq. Very bad for 180 dollars.
Review 67:Good atmosphere and good breakfast
Review 68:This is a heritage building and that makes it special to stay. Then there is nothing not to like!
Review 69:Wonderful relaxed ambience in heritage buildings. Modern rustic decoration. Fantastic food. Keen to promote local food and wine. Nice touches like home made cookies available in small guest kitchen.
Review 70:The inn has great charm. It is a quaint Victorian inn filled with character. We had an attic room so if you're very tall, ask for a downstairs room. Lots of considerate little touches such as homemade biscuits in the well-stocked visitors' kitchen. We ate dinner at the inn too, which was very good, as was the breakfast. Near the harbour and Griffiths Island, a great place to stay on the GOR.
Review 71:Price a bit high but the demand seems to be there
Review 72:The comfortable suite to relax and catch-up with emails The elegant glasses from the tea room to enjoy the great wines The age and history of the house The calm position near the river and harbor
Review 73:Only problem was the evening meal service was a little slow as a new girl was being trained but hey we all have to learn.
Review 74:Little nooks and crannies to sit and read, kitchenette to make tea and coffee. Comfort, cleanliness. Lovely garden area with vegies grown for the restaurant. Cute little bar area. Nice toiletries and decent sized towels. The history of the place. The evening meal and breakfast were delicious.
Review 75:The whole package was just right. The Merrijig offers very comfortable rooms - we were upgraded - but our travelling companions had a similar room to our initial request and it was very nice- bright and airy. The snug bar was ideal for a pre (and post) dinner drink. Dinner was excellent and Breakfast is first class. Stay there and you will like it.
Review 76:Cosy and quaint, but feels a bit cluttered in the common areas.
Review 77:We stayed in a queen room which had a little sitting area off the bedroom - great to have the extra space to put suitcases and get dressed but not really suited for anything else. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom was very clean with plenty of hot water and nice amenities, linen etc.... The Inn is very old and historic but well maintained and has a cosy atmosphere. There is a lounge for guests with an open fire on cold nights and a small kitchen where you can make a cup of tea. Very good breakfast with all home made jams, stewed fruits, breads and the like - delicious. Nice, helpful staff and well located with just a short stroll into town or to the beach - quiet and peaceful. A good choice for a night or two and has a nice restaurant and small bar on site - great if you don't feel like going out.
Review 78:Nothing, really - except that the wi-fi was a bit weak and unpredictable.
Review 79:The atmosphere of this little hotel is very seductive. It has great charm and a sense of history, and the owners have added comfortable, whimsical touches throughout. The attic bedroom was straight out of a storybook. The food was wonderful, too. And the gardens, complete with silky bantams, are a delight.
Review 80:Stairs to attic rooms very steep but were not too difficult to use just take care.
Review 81:Great location close to river. The common areas were pleasant and comfortable, The attic room although small was adequate with its own en-suite. The excellent included breakfast was the pleasant surprise and rounded off the stay beautifully.
Review 82:Room was very cramped...but ok for one night...small cooked breakfast menu - one item only!
Review 83:Room was in the attic - good views of the wharf.....hot shower....nice evening meal
Review 84:I'm a 194cm tall male. No information when booking that room was 'attic'. 190cm high ceilings and lower doorway heights. Sloping wall over toilet so can't stand at the toilet. Toilet seat wouldn't stay up. Length of bed 15 cms too short. Thin walls so I could hear the guests in the next rooms.
Review 85:Breakfast included. Charged $15 less than booked for. Friendly and helpful staff. Open fire. Access to waterfront. Sound of the ocean at night.
Review 86:The Inn could have displayed more of the early history of the building and the neighbourhood. The restaurant is good but a little expensive for the level of the cuisine and service. However these are quite minor quibbles.
Review 87:It was wonderful to stay in the historic centre of this old port where my ancestors arrived circa 1850. The Merrijig Inn is tasteful, authentic and comfortable and there are many other historic cottages and buildings in the neighbourhood. The cottage gardens in full bloom were a delight.
Review 88:Very steep, narrow stairs to carry your luggage to the attic room.
Review 89:Great WiFi. Attic rooms are very small, think Paris or Venice. But, the bed was comfortable and cozy. The breakfast was delicious and the location is great.
Review 90:As two tall people we found the slanting ceiling hazardous.
Review 91:Fantastic atmosphere.Staff were very friendly and accommodating. The quality of the food was outstanding.
Review 92:WiFi did not work in room. Had to go to reception or next seating area for coverage.
Review 93:Staff were very helpful and nice. Breakast (included) and dinner were very good
Review 94:Lovely old world charm, fantastic king suite with separate lounge room, very comfortable and relaxing, fire lit in the evening. Great location near wharf and easy walk to shops
Review 95:Would not recommend sleeping on the sofa bed, like most sofa beds not very comfortable.
Review 96:Breakfast! Bright sunny Parlour with a lovely view. Fruit juice so fresh, lovely fresh bread and jams and a delicious mushroom omelette, the best!
Review 97:The room was spacious and lovely. We dined in at the restaurant and the food was excellent. Port Fairy itself does not have much going for it. You need to plan day trips.
Review 98:Needs aircondition Would do with some better matching of colors and fittings in bathroom Did not respond to my message re quality of the meat Breakfast ought to be available until 10:00 Quite expensive meals
Review 99:Charming with character Good bed Good bath linen
Review 100:No complaints from me.
Review 101:The ability to go back and have a cuppa after checking out, while waiting for my bus. As well as making a sandwich, on fabulous bread,( which didn't seem to be available anywhere else in town) to have on my homeward journey. That's providing extra service, which is totally unexpected, and all with a friendly smile!
Review 102:Disappointed with the room! We had one of the smallest room and had to leave most of our luggage in the car. You might hit your head on the ceiling if you are quite tall.
Review 103:The breakfast was great. Location is a short walk to the shops and very near the rivers.
Review 104:Just not good for the price. Kitchenette so small, kind of a joke, not even a real coffee maker or pod. Living area nice for one couple to enjoy fire. Odd old furniture, not exactly antique! A little far to walk to town to eat, isolated from restaurants. Mostly our room was dirty, blinds fell down, lady who checked us in was pleasant, but unhelpful -- you had to know the questions to ask, or you didn't get information and that can be difficult…. ie. there was water in the shared refrigerator for us, WI FI information, cookies in the kitchenette, restaurants you had to drive to, etc. Restaurant closed. Rooms themselves were small and a "king" room, was really two tiny rooms and a bath with a huge hallway.
Review 105:We loved Port Fairy! Breakfast was nice, even offered an alternative to eggs which we don't eat! Parking. Had tourist information available. Let us downgrade from a "king" to a "queen" room.
Review 106:Not a thing. Every detail was just right.
Review 107:Loved all the craft and textile pieces. Great history and sense of place. Comfort, spotless bathroom. Incredible breakfast with homemade bread and compotes. Perfect idyll.
Review 108:Loved the historic Inn setting Room was pleasant, comfortable and spacious Dinner was brilliant! Service in the restaurant was outstanding - very helpful and knowledgeable. Great local wine selection. Nice location Breakfast was tasty.
Review 109:Will like to see garden developed more, wine a bit expensive
Review 110:Charming atmosphere, lovely breakfast, sitting rooms and spaces lovely rooms. Very welcoming and relaxing. Those little extra touches were there.
Review 111:Only staying one night!!!
Review 112:The Merrijig have one queen room with a bath and we had booked a queen room. I emailed ahead asking if there was a possibility of a bath - the said from had gone so they immediately upgraded us to the King Suite - a bedroom, a lounge and an ensuite bathroom with its own access either to the outside or through the hotel to the restaurant. Communal lounge with beautiful roaring fire and access to small, well kept communal kitchen
Review 113:From the time my mother and I arrived at the Inn we were very impressed by the facilities and staff. We stayed during a winter period, the fire in the sitting room was warm, we were greeted with a friendly lady at the counter and our room was great with a view of bay. Breakfast was included in our room price and it was fantastic! fresh local bread with a selection of local jams and spreads. Lovely home made and cured fruit and fresh juice. PLUS! we were also offered a cooked breakfast which was delicious. You really do feel like you are at a home away from home when you stay here with full use of a downstairs communal kitchen, sitting room with a lovely wood fire and a small tv room. Only a block away from the town centre and the beach walking distance, everything is close by. We are looking to go back around christmas time with other family members as we were so impressed by the Merrijig. Thank you
Review 114:Nothing at all.
Review 115:Cosy attic room (for one), warm and inviting. Hot water bottle was a perfect touch. Food in the restaurant was beautiful as was the breakie in the morning. Lounge area was warm and inviting with the wood fire burning and lots of cosy couches. Will be back!
Review 116:Stayed in the warm & cosy attic room with view over the river &battery hill. Sat with a chai tea and the New Yorker magazine in front of the open fire downstairs, late in the afternoon before strolling into town. Felt like an inn in Cornwall in England but quieter more beautiful and more peaceful. Home made jams and bread, delicious coffee. Freshly squeezed juices. Breakfast overlooking garden, lawns with a view to the yacht club. Heavenly.
Review 117:The hosts are so welcoming, the Inn is so cosy and warm, the food and service is five star / we had a great stay and look forward to coming back
Review 118:our stay was too short
Review 119:Staff are really friendly, the king suite is really excellent. There is also a small kitchenette with tea, coffee and microwave you can use at any time. Breakfast was good.
Review 120:Stayed for a meal which attempted to be something special but was not particularly so. Rather overpriced for moderately good cooking. Service somewhat strident.
Review 121:Encouraged to stay downstairs and very glad to have done so. Much more space and comfort. The historical nature of this place is appealing. With some attention to detail this could be an outstanding place to stay. Glad we stayed but once will be enough.
Review 122:We were delighted with the Merrijig Inn. Wonderful atmosphere, comfy rooms and the breakfast (included in the price) was excellent. Whilst we didn't stay for dinner at their restaurant, when we did return the ambience, chatter and warmth from the dining room was really nice to hear. We ended up having a great coffee at the wood lined historical bar. It is also such good value for money. We will definitely return and recommend this to others.
Review 123:The decor and homeliness
