Reviews for Pousada de Marvao
Review 1:Signposting to the hotel could be improved, given that you have to find your way through a series of narrow cobbled streets.
Review 2:Location inside the walls of the town.
Review 3:Relax and enjoy fantastic view from rounge and dinig room. Spacious room. Car parking just in front of the hotel, but with good skill. Advise; Do not trust GPS to enter the village, which shows switch-back steep slope through the narrow gate for pedestrians on the left on the way to the right entry, but you should go to the end of the road where you will find the double straight gates.
Review 4:Dated and uncomfortable room. Staff pushed 2 singles into a corner to form double, sharing one table and lamp, making access very difficult. The mini bar had just 3 cans of soft drink and one beer. The bathroom was dated, dark and cracked. The breakfast was appalling. In all, felt like a motorway stopover in the 70s. The saving grace, the view, could be seen when standing in the tiny window recess but not from anywhere else in the room. The mattress was cheap and hard. The bedding grey and uncomfortable. Synthetic heavy blankets. No duvet. We had stayed here in 1982. It was charming then. In its current guise, should be avoided at all cost. Sadly for us, a total waste of time and money.
Review 5:Location.
Review 6:Adverse comments from previous reviewers; particularly those from N. America who are unable to steer a vehicle.
Review 7:We attended the Marvão Music festival booked at the last minute; this was the only pet-friendly hotel available so with some trepidation we took it. Did we stay at a different hotel from the low-rated reviews? It was fantastc, everything received 10 out of 10 for us.
Review 8:The location for this Pousada is the eagle’s nest town of Marvao, romantic and spectacular beyond belief. According to legend, it was founded by lovers fleeing from the Romans and has been a citadel up in the clouds ever since. Unfortunately, the hotel has only its location going for it, and is run down and in need of refurbishing. It was cold and foggy on the November night I recently spend there. The staff member checking me in said, “It is always cold here.” I was the only guest on the night I stayed. The staff flitted about coughing and sneezing like members of some TB ward. I was the only customer for a rather pretension and awful dinner in the dining room, with the mile high view blanked out in the clouds. Personally, I don’t want to be served by people who are obviously sick, this is not good management. My room was run down and dowdy, but (very important) the heating worked well. Certainly, a visit to Marvao is recommended when you are in Portugal, and this Pousada seems to be essentially the only game in town. It’s also a good recommendation against the privatization of the Pousadas, in my opinion.
Review 9:Wifi is good close to the reception but poor or non-existent elsewhere. Restaurants are not well reviewed in the town so we chose to go to Portagem nearby. That necessitated a taxi for two evenings, but there's only one in Marvao and he was busy the second night so the reception called one from another town which cost €34 return instead of €21! Be wary!
Review 10:The location is perfect, the views are spectacular, the breakfast is good. It is very easy to walk around the old town from the hotel. The Staff is delightful and very helpful.
Review 11:to get the the pousada is quite a challenge. Better be a good driver. the poised is at the top of a 870M mountain with roads that were made for horses. Hotel is old, not renovated but clean.
Review 12:Beware parking difficulties, and windy narrow streets. A little bit in need of sprucing up.
Review 13:Great setting in old town. Good restaurant. Facilities a little run down. Great windy streets for atmosphere, quite hilly.
Review 14:What am amazing time. The views were breath taking. The journey to the hotel was exciting that accumulated as we got closer. We will share this piece of heaven with other Canadians. Thank you for the memories.
Review 15:Dinner only fair, not in keeping with the everything else.
Review 16:The setting is incredible and the history a vital part of Portugal.

Review 29:Great location. Great room - suite with a balcony and a spectacular view over the valley below. Welcome bowl of fruit and bottle of champagne.
Review 30:Parking is difficult and unloading cases problematic, although staff are very helpful.
Review 31:Stupendous location. Good Portuguese food. Comfortable room (superior type)
Review 32:Having read all of the good reviews we were disappointed with theevening meals. It seems to us that better value can be found outside ofthe hotel. We were particularly disappointed with an under cookedchicken when the solution was to offer a complimentary soup!
Review 33:Everything apart from the evening meals. The rooms are very comfortableand ours had a wonderful view. The breakfasts are some of the best wehave had in any hotel.
Review 34:The food was atrocious and poor value for money. The service in therestaurant was diffident and very very slow. The quality of food leftmuch to be desired. It's a poor advert for the pousadas. Access isdifficult.
Review 35:Situation. Old worlde atmosphere. Quaint. Large room with great views
Review 36:Old fashioned, not refurbished for the last 40 years most probablyvery poor quality restaurant, our worst culinary experience while travelling 2 weeks in portugal
Review 37:Outstanding location, nice mansion
Review 38:The bathrooms need refurbishing - ours had a chip in the enamel of the bath and the tiles showed signes of mould
Review 39:The views from the Pousada are magnificent.
Review 40:You are unlikely to be able to park your car outside the hotel (only 2 spaces available, book early). The town is for walkers and is not car friendly. Ensure that you pin point the hotel within the town before you travel.
Review 41:The location was extraordinary, very high up in a hilly region. The Castle has been well kept and makes for an interesting viewing. The view from the hotel restaurant is truly spectacular, with a view to die for. Good walking region.
Review 42:The place itself and the marvelous sorrounding. It was my birthday and as we arrived the weather was terrible raining foggy and could not see the house in front of the Pousada, next morning the sun was out and made our day perfect.
Review 43:Ok, the rooms are plain, simple, but who cares.
Review 44:Marvao is a unique place on earth. We've been going there for 40 yearsand never get tired of it. Now, the castle grounds are open and whatgrounds! Wow! I hesitate to hype this wonderful place because I alwayswant to come back and don't want to find it is booked. Our grandkidssaid it was the highlight of their Iberian tourl
Review 45:Food in the restaurant was disappointing. Parking the car would haveneeded more assistance.
Review 46:Pousada de Marvão has a unique location in a small mountain village withstunning views from bar and restaurant. Service was very friendly.
Review 47:The breakfast was terrible. Tray for bacon contained no bacon at 8.00 inthe morning. Egg and sausages were inediable- must roll out the sameones every morning as sausages as knife could hardly cut through them. And the staff for breakfast made themselves invisable and not friendly-not good enough for a first class hotel
Review 48:Very friendly receptionist, who dealt with our requests in an efficentand friendly manner
Review 49:This was our first time at any Pousada and our time there made itcertain that we would stay there again and at other Pousada locations.
