Reviews for Leisure Inn Penny Royal Hotel & Apartments
Review 1:No air com, only one pillow on the bed,no plates or cutlery, had to move the table to plug in jug...Internet wouldn't work keep dropping out as soon as u got conected..
Review 2:Location was good staff were friendly..
Review 3:Our towels were obviously soiled and weren't replaced. I prefer not to leave them lying on the floor just so they are replaced . Would prefer a bar of soap ens read of shower gel on the wall.
Review 4:The building has lots of character. The restaurant had great meals at affordable prices.
Review 5:No air conditioning. There was construction at the hotel but this did not affect our stay at all, we still had a great stay.
Review 6:Good spot close to Cataract Gorge and an easy walk into the main mall and the harbour restaurants. Very sweet and friendly staff.
Review 7:The room we stayed in didn't look anything like the pictures on the booking website. Go to the hotel website and look for the Hotel Grounds link, from there look at the second picture on the third row and you'll see how dark the room was, even with the light on. Almost no space for more than a toothbrush. We tried to eat dinner at the restaurant, but even though we were sitting at a table we were told that they wouldn't take our order because they were too busy - we should wait to order later in about an hour! And we are talking a pub here, not fine dining with reservations. As for service, we came back one morning to find the cleaning person telling us that someone else had reserved the room, we would have to move, and a man had been called to take our luggage out of the room. She told us that we needed to check with the desk to see if a room was available. When everything was said and done, she had made a mistake and we kept our room, but the wear and tear on us was unforgivable. Had to keep the window open for cooling (and put small fan in it) because the room was so hot. But when the wind came up strongly, the fan fell out on the floor and and papers from the desk went all over the room. All in all, it was a room.
Review 8:The hotel was very convenient to walk to the Gorge, but cool buildings were several blocks away. It was also convenient to the Art Gallery.
Review 9:Difficult to put in words. Property has impeccable 19th century feel of solid stone and heavy timber beams, yet the fit-out is distinctly modern too. Exceptionally clean and everything works the way it should. Slightly adrift of the city centre (about 1.5 km on foot) but the immediate precincts are fantastic, right on the gorge, absolutely proximate to outstanding restaurants (I'm a foodie) and close to the museum. Have stayed in a number of places in Launceston, but this is the best by country mile. From memory, I believe there were some restrictions on WIFI data usage. Would suggest that every traveller ring and ask. Frequently saw hotels in Tas claim "free WIFI" only to discover that this actually meant you only got 200 - 500 mb free but had to pay the rest. Hotels in Tasmania need to wise up and join the 21st Century. It needs to be unlimited to satisfy most people these days. Figure Tas is about 5 years from evolving in that direction. That aside, would definitely go back to Penny Royal. Left a smile on my face.
Review 10:Bit of a tricky room to get too, my partner is 6"3 and hit his head on the overhanging cieling going up stairs to our room. That is to be expected given the nature of the building.
Review 11:What wasn't to love! Location, staff, room, facilities, everything was fabulous.
Review 12:no bad experiences only comment is that parking is limited
Review 13:just about everything - clean comfortable rooms with great beds and clean functional bathrooms.
Review 14:There are only stairs access to the upper floors, not a problem for us though but maybe for some.
Review 15:The room was quite basic, but clean and well located. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The restaurant next door does a lovely breakfast, with very welcoming staff too.
Review 16:It was so hot. No air conditioning and the ventilation was poor. A lot of cracking sounds coming out from the timber during the night. At times, it was scary.
Review 17:None.
Review 18:Room was a quite warm on our arrival. Fans had been turned on but Windows needed to be opened to make it comfortable. No air con available in our apoartment.
Review 19:Rooms are cosy and well appointed. Staff were extremely friendly. Work was being done at the time but this did not affect our stay. Amazing location and something a little different. Cataract George just next door was pretty cool!!
Review 20:No air con but fan provided enough air flow
Review 21:Clean. Comfortable. Location to CBD. Character of Penny Royal buildings. Remember coming here as a child when it was Penny Royal World.
Review 22:A bit warm during the day but it is an old building and it didn't cause any problems - fan was supplied and windows to open.
Review 23:Our room was large, comfortable, well appointed and clean. A bit warm during a hot day (no air conditioning but fan is provided). Our room did overlook the construction area but we had no problems with noise while we were there and the workmen were friendly and helpful. It did not distract from our visit. It is in a great location - the walk to Cataract Gorge is easy 20 minutes with a slight incline but worth it! Close enough to town for shopping, plenty of eateries 3 minutes walk - would definitely stay here next time and bring extended family.
Review 24:The room smelled a bit musty, which could be due to the fact that it's an old building. I found myself sneezing a bit and I don't have allergies (or not that I've noticed before). The night we were there was quite hot and there's no air conditioning. We kept a window open, which did the job in the end. On arrival by car, it isn't immediately clear where to park. The car park is at the back of the hotel complex, up a drive way between reception and the pub.
Review 25:Quite unique style accommodation in a beautiful old building. Walls were thick and we didn't hear any noise from neighbouring rooms. The windows opened, which was nice. 250MB of Internet were included, which is handy for research of things to do in the area. Staff at check in and check out were lovely and efficient, as was the housekeeping staff we encountered.
Review 26:I didn't like the interior walls as old and dirty, the locking of door very difficult and Internet could not connect.
Review 27:Loved the location excellent. Comfortable bed. Loved the Tudor style buildings.
Review 28:We had a Tower room, large and interesting - but hot! It was hot in Launceston over that time. No air con, two fans that barely helped. The 5 windows would not open, so we could not get any ventilation or cool the room at night. Not a pleasant experience. Poor room cleaning. Stairs, no lift.
Review 29:Location was great. Idea for the building was interesting.
Review 30:The insulation of the room is not that good due to the building is old. But still worth to stay! And the free wifi is limited
Review 31:Really lovely heritage building. The room is clean and comfort. The facilities is new and all in good condition. I will come back next time, if I go to laucenston again!
Review 32:The room was large and very clean. A restaurant in the complex, another next door and a pub next to the restaurant meant dining was no problem. The 3 minute walk to The Gorge was a bonus!
Review 33:Rooms very hot, cooking smells come in open windows, vehicle noise inthe night and early morning. We were exhausted after two nights. Booked elswhere in Launceston last night but ate in restraunt.
Review 34:It had an excellent restraunt, bar, and lovely staff
Review 35:We were uninformed about our room overlooking construction site. It was noisy and disturbing from 7am to 4.30pm. Our room was up 2 steep flights of stairs - it would be helpful if guests were advised of this at the time of booking. There was an unpleasant odour at times in our room which we advised reception about. Disappointed we did not receive a discount for inconvenience as requested when checking out after 3 nights..
Review 36:No air conditioning in the room.
Review 37:Location was good, you can walk up the road and be in Cataract Gorge within a few minutes. The restaurant on-site was great for a meal.
Review 38:Apartment lacked air con which we were aware of when booking.
Review 39:Good location, great value for money. Excellent bar and restaurant within walking distance.
Review 40:The bathroom didn't have good ventilation. It got very hot in there.
Review 41:Lovely old building with comfortable beds and pillows. Nice view of the other building. Right next door was a great place to eat. Close to the water and the CBD.
Review 42:The phone in our room didn't work nor did the wifi. We arrived in Launceston on a 35 degree day to find the room without a fan or air conditioning. This wouldn't ordinarily be a problem as the temperature outside was so dropping. However, we were unable to get any cool air into the appartment as the windows were all painted shut. It made for a very hot and difficult sleep. The hotel is currently undergoing massive renovations, which started directly below our apartment at 7.30am on New Years Day. That being said, we couldn't fault the staff in any way. They did everything they could to make us more comfortable, delivering a fan to our room in the morning and asking the workmen (who weren't supposed to be there New Year's Day) to stop. They also discounted our nights stay. Thank you!
Review 43:The location was brilliant and the staff were super friendly and helpful.
Review 44:Too many stairs for carting five people's luggage up and down for a one night stay. One of the three bedrooms was downstairs, with the bathroom upstairs. One of our kids felt a bit isolated from the rest of the family. Reception on a different premises.
Review 45:Apartment was clean, quiet and spacious. Kitchen and bathroom both well-equipped. Adventure playground at rear of apartments looks awesome. Still under construction when we were there though. Good location close to beautiful Cataract Gorge.
Review 46:Most of the local restaurants closed due to holidays this is a peak period? The restaurants cafes that were open were fully booked-good on em.
Review 47:The location close to water and gorge and a few diverse restaurants
Review 48:Hot and cold water tap instead of mixer for sink and shower. Insufficient towel racks to dry bath towels. 'Unlockable' bathroom door lock.
Review 49:Nice room layout. Comfortable beds. Spacious room. Ample parkings. We stayed in a 3 bedder.
Review 50:Air conditioner very noisy from pub under the rooms , maybe need just a couple of comfortable chairs in rooms
Review 51:the staff were very helpful , And they did change us when we had a problem by moving our room
Review 52:Room needs lights on. Entering rm 242 was pitch black and didn't give best impression. Better air movement/aircon was very claustrophobic or fly screen on door to allow fresh air in. Stairs to room will need to have a gripping compound was pouring rain and my husband (77 yrs) found it bit daunting coming down them. The position of Penny Royal is very inviting.
Review 53:Bathroom, bed and pillows excellent
Review 54:Lots of stairs & was there with my elderly mum. My single bed was uncomfortable & room was quite small. Construction noise started around 7.30.
Review 55:Mum had the queen bed & said it was very comfortable. Great restaurant. Whole place very quaint & charming.
Review 56:No air conditioning, so the rooms were very warm and stuffy. They did provide a fan, and the rooms cooled down pretty quickly with the doors/windows open.
Review 57:Location was fantastic. Rooms were comfy and clean
Review 58:No air conditioners in the accommodation
Review 59:The friendliness of the staff and the people in Launceston . How clean Launceston is and no giraffe The accommodation is a short walk to the Tamar river and CBD
Review 60:Fag butts outside the restaurant.
Review 61:Just a cool place. Good rooms. Good space. Big car park. Nice little pub and restaurant with very very accommodating staff.
Review 62:The only tiny issue was our shower was a bit temperamental it wouldn't stay hot for very long.
Review 63:Easy walking distance to cataract gorge and town centre. Friendly and helpful staff. Restaurant and bar downstairs was great
Review 64:Reception and hotel is no were near the accomadation. The rude older lady at reception said, just go up the road under the bridge etc.. and still no mention of the stairs, what she couldnt think to tell this to our parents in there 80s when they turned up for there booking?Unsightly construction going on and the rediculous stairs! like 20-30 big old steep concrete stairs to go up to get to your room, very dangerous and then heaps more stairs inside the accomadation..not good for the elderly.. we were travelling with a couple in there 80s, this made getting suitcases etc to the room a nightmare!!we were suppost to stay here on our way back but canacelled our booking.. would never recommend!!
Review 65:the hotel/meal was fantastic, but not owned by you guys, so probably not relevant.
Review 66:Only downfall was sometimes there's not enough Guest Parking. That's hard when there's also no street parking available, which I experienced
Review 67:It was a lovely location and walking distance to town.
Review 68:Construction works underway at the moment. Parking at a premium. Toilet not naturally or mechanically ventilated.
Review 69:Great location near the Cataract. Awesome themed accommodation. Airy, comfy beds.
Review 70:Apartments were located in different location to main hotel and reception (5min walk). The rooms looked very different to the photos they used on their website. Building works are happening (not on the day we were there)
Review 71:Good sized apartment, 15mins walk from city
Review 72:We stayed a weekend night so it was a little noisy from a function in the pub below but we didn't mind so much.
Review 73:I loved every bit of this place! Very spacious twin rooms. Unique rooms. Great location just around the corner from Cataract Gorge. Tasty breakfast and dinner in the pub next door. Helpful staff.
Review 74:Blinds do not block out the light enough from outside and moving of chairs and tables in restaurant downstairs until mid night was a bit annoying otherwise everything else was good.
Review 75:Good, clean accomodation
Review 76:Our room was very quiet and very comfortable. Great location and just far enough away from main CBD that there was no noise. Would recommend to friends.
Review 77:They operate a equally exotic and historical bar and restaurant downstairs the party noise continued until 2230 when the party was over.
Review 78:Exotic historical flavor this place is perfect if you want a taste back in time. Heritage wooden structures and stone stairways and the windmill is all well blended with clean simple furniture and bathroom. Surprisingly close to center Launceston just 15 minutes walk. The #1 steakhouse Black Cow is a must try or don't eat steak at all.
Review 79:We stayed in two-room appt, spacious & cozy. I particularly like the unique outlook of the building with character. Also the location is convenient & perfect to walk to Cataract Gorge. Our family juz thoroughly enjoyed our stay there.
Review 80:Hard to find a parking spot at end of day.
Review 81:The price was excellent. Helpful, friendly staff catered to all our needs. Great food and ambiance in the dining room. Quiet and relaxing. Look forward to a return visit.
Review 82:Our car along with 4 others had windows smashed while in the hotel carpark overnight.
Review 83:Location was excellent and staff extremely helpful and understanding when our car was vandalised in the car park.
Review 84:No elevator so you have to drag the luggage by yourself up the stairs. Quite some noise coming from the tavern downstairs (the whole Launceston seems very quiet, but this place!)
Review 85:The building is peculiar and nice.
Review 86:Unfortunately our room was situated on the ground floor next to the driveway, next to the box type air conditioner for the cafe (on 24hr a day). Other occupants needed to walk past to access their rooms and there was a flood light outside the window so it was like daylight all night. Then to top it off we had a " herd of elephants" occupy the room above. Shower alcove very small.
Review 87:Within walking distance to city centre
Review 88:The aircon wasn't working and the room wasn't soundproof. I could hear my neighbors talking in the room next door and outside noises travelled in. There were a few cobwebs in the ceiling beams and the tops of the tiles in the bathroom weren't cleaned in awhile. The rest of the room was very clean though.
Review 89:The quaintness of the building. Comfortable beds and pillows and good shower. Also shaving cream, body cream, shampoo and conditioner despensers on the wall was a nice touch.
Review 90:Our apartment was located right next to the construction work. This impeded on our comfort on a Sunday morning.
Review 91:Close to Cataract Gorge and city centre
Review 92:No opening windows, it was a little stuffy, the fridge was tiny & bed was too firm for us
Review 93:The room was lovely & big , it was close to Cataract Gorge & the restaurant at hotel ,the food was fantastic & the staff at the inn were wonderful & eager to please
Review 94:We couldnt open our curtains as construction workers were working directly at the back of us s scraping paint. very noisy from 7am and no privacy
Review 95:Location the house had all amenities
Review 96:There's no lift so baggage beware! Limited car park lots. It's literally filled to the max. The bathroom is very small n the sink area is so cramp. We had the triple room. The room is comfy n spacious but our room faced the roads so I could hear the traffic in the wee hours. Suggest u indicate quiet room n get there early in case u need a room change.
Review 97:Having a tavern on the premise. Close to cataract gorge from the end/neck if u just wanna walk into the park. It's old style so makes it very interesting yet the bathrooms are modern.
Review 98:Non-existent soundproofing- could hear people walking above us the entire night, was the worst sleep ever. Construction is pretty extensive at the moment and blocked the entrance to the parking lot. When we asked them to move so that we could be let in, they weren't very polite. Also started work at 7am on a Saturday morning. Walk into town is also a good 10-15 mins which is far considering the size of Launceston.
Review 99:Rooms were quite spacious and kitchenette facilities.
Review 100:No air conditioning, even on a cooler day the place feel a little stuffy/muggy needed to open windows to let in some fresh air.
Review 101:Restaurant/bar in the complex.
Review 102:Some reception staff were a little too brittle! No cleaning of room or emptying of rubbish during our 3 day stay. Difficult for an older person (my partner is 83) to go up the stairs. We were on the top floor.
Review 103:The location, close to Cataract Gorge and the Tamar River. Interesting and novel building
Review 104:Charming little place which was much nicer than we expected! The room was very clean, the bed was comfortable, the room was also a good size and loved the free wifi! The staff were also very friendly and able to help us with sightseeing. It wasn't right in the center of town but still in a pretty good location and it was easy to find our way around!
Review 105:Reception is not at the Apartments and there was no sign to tell you along with the works going on. It should be good when finished.
Review 106:Apartment was good and had all we needed
Review 107:I did not like that the complex is currently a building site, with work starting at 7am on the Saturday morning. This stuff should be explained at the booking stage NOT at cheek in. We struggled to get a car spot. The sliding front door did not lock. The noise from the road was loud. I can see why they are being upgraded.
Review 108:The washer and dryer were out of order...very inconvenient for traveling and making many stops. Staff did provide information to find a laundrette in town, but would have been much more convenient on site.
Review 109:Loved the charm of the doors and overall feel of the hotel.
Review 110:too many dusts since it's still have construction there.
Review 111:The location with old stone structure building , looks old and feel like live in old time. And it's convenient to every where and privacy room with nice view of scenic area.
Review 112:No lift! Fortunately a young cleaning lady helped us to carry our suitcase downstairs from the third floor! Also the sink bathroom sink in our room was blocked
Review 113:location
Review 114:rooms on the ground floor are very dark; constant heavy smell of fried food coming from the kitchen fans that are right by the entry, noise of delivery trucks; very old shower curtain in the bathroom
Review 115:5 minutes walk to city centre, nice historical building
Review 116:We were warned about the ongoing construction but the shortage of parking was an occasional problem. The traffic noise from the nearby freeway was loud.
Review 117:Walking distance to CBD and next to Cataract Gorge. Apartments are old fashioned but had character and are more comfortable than most modern apartments.
Review 118:Nil
Review 119:We enjoyed the architecture of the building and the way it was renovated. It is close to city and interesting surroundings. Enjoyed it very much. Also good security.
Review 120:the room wasn't airconditioned and there were no electric blankets. the room was clean and comfortable except for the pillows. perhaps they could improve on these few things. otherwise all good.
Review 121:Apartment was cramped and hot, especially the bathroom. Shower had no pressure and hot water system was awful. Construction work taking place so very noisy early in morning and little parking available. First and last time staying in the apartments, prefer the hotel rooms which are fantastic and fabulous to stay in.
Review 122:Staff were friendly and helpful. Close to Cataract Gorge and the waterfront. Easy walking to city and parks.
Review 123:The terrible steps to the 1st level. Access to L1 needs urgent sttention. It is dangerous.
Review 124:Convenience to CBD. Atmosphere. It's bar & restaurant. Closeness to Cataract Gorge.
Review 125:The inside of the room doesn't match the rustic exterior - just a standard hotel room with a couple of exposed timber beams.
Review 126:Comfortable, clean, friendly staff, free parking, good location for cataract gorge. Free internet (up to a daily limit).
Review 127:No lift, had to carry suitcases up two flights of external stairs.
Review 128:Location. Friendly staff. Close to many lovely restaurants. Clean and comfortable accommodation.
Review 129:Not being told about construction, no sleep or privacy due to noise from workman, cranes, trucks etc
Review 130:When we booked was not informed about major construction and renovations happening at hotel. Did not appreciate being woken at 6.45am by the crane outside my bedroom window and workmen talking. We go on holidays to relax and rest, could not do either due to noise. Really unimpressed and to be honest very angry, quick to take our money but not tell us about construction, would never have stayed here if we knew about the construction and the noise and total inconvenience. Could also not get a car park due to trucks, cranes and workman vechicles. No privacy what so ever as workman right out the front of window. Left more tired than when we arrived so not what you call a relaxing holiday. This put a huge dampner on our stay here and due to not being told anything about the construction at time of booking I would say this was very dishonest and at the very least totally misleading. Not Happy!
Review 131:No water when we arrived. Would've been nice if we were informed in the morning so we could've gone somewhere else to have a shower before attending a wedding. Staff were not sympathetic and didn't offer any suggestions. Quick to get the payment in full before any discussions. Should've at least offered a discount for water not working. Bathroom door lock didn't work. Limited parking due to renovation work.
Review 132:Interior was nice. Old buildings had a nice charm. Access to the car park was easy.
Review 133:the doors with the gorgeous old locks were difficult to open and close. I dont think I'd like that changed but it was a problem getting out of the bathroom. I drink a lot of water and dont believe in bottles of plastic water, and your tap water tasted like pool water, I survived but it wasnt as enjoyable
Review 134:Rooms well appointed and comfortable. comfy bed, convenient lighting. generous soundproof bathroom. As I was traveling with work colleague it was a big bonus.
Review 135:The inn was amazing, friendly staff and very helpful and we loved the oldie world feel to it. Beautiful view of the gorge and all the history within the inn was magical. Loved the restaurant and sweet shop on the premises also.
Review 136:No lift for luggage but we knew that from website. Would ruin character of building.
Review 137:Delicious fresh food and awesome staff who love their job and genuinely aim to please the patrons - especially Brad, Jess and owner Asli. Quirky comfortable and clean rooms exactly as portrayed in web photos. Right near Cataract Gorge and waterfront!
Review 138:Unfortunately there were renovations going on that we weren't aware was happening. This didn't bother us too much except that parking was difficult as half the car park was being used for other things.
Review 139:Location was very good.
Review 140:Massive construction project on site -> loud noise early in the morning, construction vehicles everywhere. View terrible. Also rooms a bit run down, very noisy between rooms and strangely, people could look down into the main room from the corridor.
Review 141:Location right near the cataract gorge, spacious rooms.
