Reviews for Wairakei Resort Taupo

Review 1:I was struggling with two young children with bags up the stairs to our room (800 series), when two young staff basically stepped over us and up the stairs, talking to each other. I was a little surprised at their lack of compassion and willingness to help a guest obviously having trouble. TV reception was pretty average, I played with the cable and got it a little better, this is always a frustration of mine in hotels.

Review 2:Response from staff to safe issue, ice, and our fridge which was not working properly was prompt and efficient. Facilities were good. We enjoyed the pool.

Review 3:NOTE: first time ever critising a place I have stayed. Normally would not bother. Restuarant was terrible. Pavilion food was poor considering the amount of people using the facility. Don't have the Ravioli, absolutely out of a packet. Pork was tough and could bounce like a ball. Same for the Fish n chips which we tried the second night. They say it's Snapper (definitely not) battered or crumbed but you can't have grilled. Why? Straight out of the packet into the the deep fryer. Really the only bad meals we had in the nine days in NZ. A country renowned for great food. We went to the Fairways cafe and it was buffet. Walked straight out looking at the meals some customers were having. Should not cost basically $70 for 2 to have a buffet either. Others were also commenting at their tables. Nice resort but eat down in town. Also your advertisement for De Bartoli Wines on the table. False advertising! They are Australian not Italian. Says it on the bottom of the bottle on the image. The restaurant needs work big time. Will tarnish the reputation of the resort otherwise.

Review 4:Rooms were quite nice and clean. Smallest King Bed I have slept in, really a Queen. Location is convenient to township.

Review 5:The weather! It rained the entire time we were there in residence unabling us to enjoy the outdoor facilities. The distance into Taupo too far to walk for a meal.

Review 6:It was a stopping off point and good value for the money compared with other places around. The staff were friendly, courteous and ready to help when asked.

Review 7:Rooms and bathrooms are quite dated. Cost per night is only justifiable by the additional features the resort offers over and above the rooms.

Review 8:Great location. Pools, gym, playground and restaurant were excellent.

Review 9:Staff member sold our room to someone else while we wait for it to be cleaned. Manager Blair sorted it out for us immediately which was good

Review 10:Villa was perfect for a family with laundry & kitchen facilities but can eat out or in hotel restaurant. Will definitely be coming back.

Review 11:I was a bit upset at receiving a phone call to say we would be paying for a no show. When in fact the account was settled in full well before check out time. I received an apology but it should not have happened with accounting systems the way they are today.

Review 12:The surprised look on my friends' faces when we arrived at Wairakei Resort. I had been before on a couple of occasions and wanted to share the experience of the old world charm of the establishment. We were not disappointed,

Review 13:check out is quite early, 10am and no option to extend by an hour at all.

Review 14:very good price amazing location and 4 minutes from downtown so no need to pay more money for not as nice facilities to be in the action when you can get there that quickly.

Review 15:Absolute bare minimum of amenities in the room. Sure, we could keep calling reception and asking for more supplies, but at the price we paid? Only two towels, one small shampoo/shower gel (that was rubbish anyway), not so much as a plate or knife in the drawer of the kitchenette (but cleaning up supplies!?). Have to call reception for fresh milk, no plunger coffee (doesn't seem to be a problem at other hotels/ motels/campsites even!...). The hallway was very noisy and door did nothing to dull the sound. Other than the staff I mentioned in my positive section, everyone else seemed disinterested in us and other guests, and most of them could barely manage a smile at all...(the golf course lady seemed particularly grumpy). It is billed as the Wairakei tourist resort, but would do better to be called the last resort... In comparison with everywhere else we've stayed in New Zealand, this place is sub par and expensive... Maybe other people will like it (families perhaps...?), but we didn't, and will not be going back.

Review 16:Kevin, who did our check in was very friendly, and the porter was also nice.

Review 17:Pillows were not great and no movies Would also recommend having adults only pool as you have two. Kids at an outside bar where you can smoke is not great.

Review 18:Person who did check in was brusque and seemed to lack customer service orientation. When we got to section 600 we found that we couldn't read his writing to get the room number so we phoned him and he did not have a good attitude and was very unapologetic

Review 19:Great location and facilities

Review 20:Asked for extra coffee cups they were dirty, beds very worn need to be replaced. Fridge in room didn't work properly. Pools way too hot for Summer weather, should be set to mid twenties not 38degrees we didn't make use of pools as we would have liked to, great pity especially with children.

Review 21:The dinner buffet was lovely. Very central to all tourist attractions in area.

Review 22:Not a bad experience but I think that I would describe the room that we stayed in as a little "tired".

Review 23:Location was perfect, playing golf at wairakei international. Breakfast was very good. Staff at front desk were excellent.

Review 24:The fact that you are not told when booking that payment by Credit Card will incur surcharge , most people in fact pay by Credit Card.

Review 25:Beautiful Surroundings , friendly staff and nice view from our Room.

Review 26:We didn't know if we should have a ground or first floor room.Very noisey people out on the balcony above quite late at night so wished we had that room.

Review 27:Very clean, plenty to do big room

Review 28:While the resort is dated it's well maintained.

Review 29:We loved the outdoor pool (there were two pools but we only used the one by the bar). It was lovely and warm! We also enjoyed the private spa pools, the Pavilion restaurant and the snooker table. Our rooms were tastefully decorated and were very comfortable. It was the perfect place to meet up with our friends and have a relaxing weekend.

Review 30:It was cheaper to book at the resort than on the booking.com website which was very disappointing as the rates are supposed to be the best that you can get!

Review 31:The pool was lovely and warm, room clean and comfortable. Easy access to car.

Review 32:Having to lug baggage to my room. No herb teas in bedroom. No chocolate in fridge. Would like to have a light breakfast, bacon egg toast, coffee. Not the big fuss in the restaurant.

Review 33:Friendly welcome, clean and comfortable room, heated pool.good food.

Review 34:Only one. The "Caesar Salad" was in fact, the worst I've ever been served. Clearly the chef who prepared this had no idea what a Caesar salad should be. [At $20,oo it should have been superb.]

Review 35:The resort met with approval by all four members of the group. two were visiting from Scotland, and two of us from Whakatane. "Wonderful location" "Great Staff" were two of the comments.

Review 36:We found the pool too hot so only stayed in for 10 minutes. I imagine it's hard to get the temp perfect with the changing seasons and small children aren't great in hot water. Others seemed to be happy!

Review 37:The staff were great and very helpful with directions. We had a great visit.

Review 38:The facility is looking a bit tired. It can benefit from a general refresh.

Review 39:The overall atmosphere and the hot pool. The trees and gardens are beautiful and well looked after.

Review 40:Really friendly staff, comfortable room and great facilities. Really good service for the second night of dining at the restaurant - the waiter remembered us and our drink order from the previous night. Great reception staff and good facilities.

Review 41:Our TV wasn't very clear to start with and unfortunately, wasn't fixed till we left. More kids program would have been great.

Review 42:It was a beautiful resort, staff were friendly and very clean.

Review 43:Room very hot, despite turning heater off. Opened windows on second night which made it more pleasant

Review 44:Grounds beautiful. Excellent breakfast. Lovely spacious rooms. Friendly, helpful staff. Lots to do on-site and close to many other attractions.

Review 45:The drinks in loung bar where very expensive. Some of the furnihing where looking a little tired.

Review 46:We had a few 'hickups' but the staff genuenly did sort things out and we love how friendly and helpfull they where

Review 47:Nothing

Review 48:Fantastic place and real value for money. Fantastic food and breakfast and dinner and front of house staff went out of their way when we locked out keys in our car at an activity outside of hotel. Grounds were amazing and loved the pool area

Review 49:If you like management-process driven hospitality, this is the place for you. Staff in reception and in the restaurant were ill trained and annoying. Everything is extra eg only 250MB wifi free per day and we had to ask for the second days worth. Then paid for more because it only lasted a short time. Hotel rooms and restaurant are very corporate economy-conference style in need of an update. Minimum facitites like hooks, shelves and towel rails in the room. Restaurant atmosphere was like a Macdonalds with noisy kids and clients - although the food was excellent. Overall a nice location with a rather unwelcoming corporate cost cutting atmosphere.

Review 50:Nice location. Friendly cleaning staff. Lovely hot outdoor pool. Wifi worked OK once I paid extra for it. Restaurant food was truly excellent - brilliant chef (who should move on to a place that deserves his talents).

Review 51:The villa and connected studio worked well for us and our friends. We enjoyed the facilities including the hot pools and the adjacent golf course, the putting green (although it needs a bit of work) and the tennis courts looked good although we didn't have time to try them.

Review 52:Mattress had a dip in it but being large king only affected one person

Review 53:Great food from restaurant Great service from food staff Clean rooms and bathrooms Disabled access Good hot pools

Review 54:The ventilator in the bathroom didn't work. Something that the personell should detect and repair immediately. But that is the ONLY thing we didn't like.

Review 55:A gym, the hotel has a gym!!! :-) An outdoor pool with 38 degrees Celsius hot water, a very nice building, nice and comfortable rooms.

Review 56:Loved everything about our stay. Our room was warm, modern and tastefully decorated, on level one with a balcony. Our bed was very comfy. Consistent hot water pressure. Very clean. Our room was also very quiet. We had dinner in the Pavilion Restaurant, our meals from the A La Carte menu were simply amazing. Staff were all very friendly. We will definitely be staying there again soon.

Review 57:The bathroom light wasn't working.

Review 58:I have always wanted to stay at Wairakei Resort. Now I can finally say that I have stayed there. I think it looks very appealing and love the large trees surrounding the venue. I liked the balcony overlooking the pool and highway. And liked the décor very much as well as the historic pictures on the walls. I went to a dinner & dance function on Friday night and was most impressed with the lovely buffet of food. The room was big and spacious and great service. Overall, I really enjoyed my brief stay here.

Review 59:Shower rose would not stay up. Left a note to this effect when departing.

Review 60:Our stay was booked at short notice to allow us to visit sick relatives. Location was good. The pool and spas were fantastic first thing in the morning and last thing at night. We did not eat at the resort

Review 61:Would have liked breakfast to be included in our room rate

Review 62:Clean, fresh room with modern decor Thermal pool Pavilion Restaurant menu Location Price

Review 63:I booked a room suitable for a terminally ill husband in a wheel chair. We were given a small room, wheel chair could not fit in the toilet room. We were finally moved into a suitable room. An experience I hope to never repear

Review 64:The porters were kind and sympathetic to our plight.

Review 65:Although the rooms appear to have been updated they are quite dated and the choice of TV channels is very limited for children and adults , not everyone wants to watch a long movie !! So very poor in that respect .

Review 66:We have stated many many times over the past 15 years We like the outdoor hot pool especially during the winter . The outdoor gardens are well kept and we have enjoyed the restaurant and not having to drive so really relaxing. Our meal here over our June 2015 was very good , great eye fillet cooked perfectly

Review 67:Although we think this hotel is great, it could do with a bit of an update. Carpets in the hallways were quite warn out in places and bathroom in our room was a bit outdated.

Review 68:Lots to do at this resort, swimming, tennis, golf, relaxing in the spa pools.

Review 69:Plumbing is a bit noisy.

Review 70:Convenience of nine hole golf course and mountain bike track nearby. Extra facilities - pools, tennis court, squash court, gym. On location dining room/s with quality meal choices so don't have to worry about eating, drinking and driving.

Review 71:just out of town, hot pools and Sauna, Spacious, great place for a weekend get away, plenty to do in the area, lovely thermal polls just 400m away over the highway

Review 72:We had almost given up finding comfortable, simple luxury accommodation in New Zealand that doesn't cost a fortune until we discovered Wairekei. We love it and look forward to the opportunity to stay here.

Review 73:I booked the hotel for myself and three colleagues for a conference. All four of us were very happy with the accommodation and most of us think that we will be back for pleasure soon.

Review 74:The dinner experience was shocking, once we sat down no staff explained to us about the buffet,3 of us wanted it,6 of us ordered meals which, after some confusion in kitchen, arrived 45 mins later,in the mean time our buffet guests were having their dessert. Not a pleasant experience!

Review 75:The setting and surrounding countryside. .closeness to taupo..spa and gym area.

Review 76:Only thing that let it down was a poor bathroom. Hairs on bath, missing bath sealant, cheap plastic bath, dirty shower curtain and bath not cleaned next morning after we'd used it. Need revamped bathrooms.

Review 77:Thermal swimming pool was roasting, my son loved the tennis courts. Fridge in room. In all it was good.

Review 78:Clean comfortable rooms which were easily heated. Nice bar and heated swimming pool area. Dinner in the Pavilion Restaurant was delicious - had the A la carte menu and the eye fillet was perfectly cooked.

Review 79:No concerns

Review 80:Its very homely and comfortable to come back to after a day of activity (cycling). All necessary facilities for relaxing and unwinding are easily accessed.

Review 81:The resort is so tidy and clean, the staff are very friendly and the restaurant was of a high quality. The heated pool was a sanity saver when the weather started to pack up

Review 82:Business had changed name but was signage also changed? 9 hole golf course was interesting but hired clubs were poor quality.

Review 83:Staff were helpful. Dinner was good value.

Review 84:Wifi should be free, you get 30 minutes free and pay small amount for more but....

Review 85:My husband last stayed here some 40 years ago, place has lovely old fashioned feel, but rooms all new or newly furbished, 2 hot pools to swim in, good restaurant, crowds rabbits on lawn, 9 hole golf course in grounds and amazing Wairakei International next door, which is both a top golf course and a bird/wildlife sanctuary.

Review 86:No plates, forks or knives if you bought food back to your room. We even asked for plates but they said they only have them in the restaurant. Asked my parents who were staying approx. 7 doors away from us & they had plates in their room. Doors to all rooms are really heavy, so they are loud when they shut.

Review 87:Gym was well equipped. Had free weights, running machine, bikes & lots of exercise equipment. Liked that it was cool & well ventilated with a water cooler also. Was quiet peaceful setting in the country side.

Review 88:the off the grill buffett the vegetables were bland and too chunky to enjoy limited selection of protein.

Review 89:All the facilities pools, sauna, spa pools, restaurant/cafe

Review 90:No phone signal, weak wifi connection, tired and in need of updating but clean, comfortable with friendly, helpful staff.

Review 91:Great location for visiting Lake Taupo. Not far from Rotorua so easy drive. Wide range of facilities in site. Beside golf course and thermal spring spa.

Review 92:The breakfast was varied but the hot food was cold which was a shame after a great experience

Review 93:Very friendly staff, lovely hot pool, golf course just over road.

Review 94:The room we booked appeared to have very thin walls and not what we were expecting. Suggestion - as the hotel appears to be a children friendly environment and there is the space- Put a toddlers and children's pool in and keep the pool by the bar for the adults with more deckchairs..

Review 95:Found The grounds and surroundings very relaxing

Review 96:The phone sticker said to dial a number for reception but that didn't work so walked to reception to be told no that's wrong just dial zero

Review 97:The staff were friendly and great amenities

Review 98:Concerning the breakfast, wish we could have heated up our mini croisants. Unsure if this is something they usually do. Noticed that the place could do with a spruce up. Looking a bit worn down. For example the rails by the pool on the far side of the resort past the tennis courts could be water blasted, repainted, same with the outdoor lighting. Just a few things around the resort which could be repaired to give the place a bit more pride. Carparking at the back of the 500 apartment blocks gets pretty full if you dont get in quick. The rear of this block where the laundry is looks shabby & you do have to walk past it.

Review 99:Great location for families with loads of facilities available to enjoy & affordable. The beauty spa was very accomodating as I was able to have a eyebrow shape (desperately required before attending a wedding that day) despite it not being on their list of services they provided & at a reasonable price. Breakfast had a huge aray of options from pancakes to bacon & eggs.

Review 100:nothing

Review 101:We only spent one night at this hotel and it was very pleasant. But we couldn't really profit of all the activities that are on offer. It is more suited for a stay of at least a few days as there are many things you can do at the hotel and also in the Taupo area. The breakfast we had was really awesome!!!

Review 102:Worn out beds - very uncomfortable. Bathrooms are in need of repair and upgrading. Carpets worn through.

Review 103:Warm pools, great grounds for children. Plenty to do.

Review 104:Unfortunately people smoking outside their apartments on the balcony was an inconvenience as it was hot and we had to shut all the doors and windows.

Review 105:The whole experience was great as a grandparent travelling with my daughter and two grandchildren we all had a fabulous time in the pools and the food both in cafe and restaurant was excellent.

Review 106:I think WiFi should be available in all hotels and resorts and for free. I would rather have a couple of dollars added to the room price.

Review 107:Staff were on the ball but not in your face, made it a very pleasant stay.

Review 108:The staff were fantastic - we were given an room with no air conditioning but didn't realise it until about 2 hours after checking in! We were given another room immediately - thank you so much. Dinner was great, facilities were excellent. Will definitely come again .

Review 109:Meals were excellent. Friendly staff. Lovely surroundings, perfect for a weekend escape. Able to play tennis and swim on site a bonus. Also very handy to golf course.

Review 110:Bed too hard no cutlery/ china/Microwave or toaster. paid extra for a room with kitchen with nothing in it except for 2 spoons 2 cups 2 gasses.Xmas dinner room too hot - no BBQ out side where it cool.

Review 111:Location and facilities i.e pool spa golf etc.

Review 112:Shower - tiles and grouting could do with a major clean.

Review 113:Facilities are great for all ages. Restaurants are great value for money. Tidyness of the room.

Review 114:Tried multiple times to contact onsite spa treatment but no response. We booked 2 (months in advance) rooms only 1 was registered on arrival as result I beleive that we were moved to lower quality rooms to accommodate 2 adjacent rooms

Review 115:Close to all taupo activities

Review 116:The rooms are a little dated but they are also clean and comfortable and I believe the price reflected this well.

Review 117:Excellent value for money. We had a large family group and we all had rooms opening out into a common courtyard area. We booked in for the BBQ dinner at $40 pp on Xmas Day and found this to be excellent value for money with all the tables having good quality Xmas crackers and festive cheer. Would stay again, especially with a larger group.

Review 118:bar was empty even around new year Need cheaper drinks and maybe fun deals- happy hour, quiz, entertainment to attract families.

Review 119:lots to do Good for families

Review 120:The bed needs to be checked and a microwave in the room for long stay would have been perfect

Review 121:Great location, nice scenery, lots of things to do there. Lovely staff. We really enjoyed our stay and already planning to go back.

Review 122:Tennis nets old balls.

Review 123:The surroundings are beautiful. Native species birds, roses, bush were refreshing. The golf course was good value. Tennis nets needed levelling, access to new and bouncy balls is needed. The staff are wonderful, from reception to domestic staff service was exceptional! Rooms are adequite slightly outdated.

Review 124:The two disengaged staff.A meal glitch..but it was fixed very successfully.

Review 125:Enjoyed hot pool, mostly very friendly staff( the couple of staff who seemed bored or tired who were not friendly and let the team down.)A dining glitch was promptly fixed with grace.Overall a great stay which we really enjoyed.Cleaning staff particularly positive and friendly.

Review 126:Although it was early December, the days and nights were pretty cool and would have liked to have had the heater working!

Review 127:Locality for our needs plus to enjoy the relaxing swim and a game of tennis!

Review 128:Having to pay for Wifi. Have traveled thousands of kilometres worldwide in the last year and haven't paid WiFi fees anywhere. Management needs to move into the present day on this. Being charged a Mastercard fee of 1.5% on top of a bill of $1300 The room rate should reflect this if it is found absolutely necessary to charge this money grabbing fee.

Review 129:Location and facilities Excellent a la carte menu Quiet relaxed atmosphere Pleasant and helpful staff...special mention of Ashley in the dining room.

Review 130:Once we addressed this at reception the room was changed to a nicer outlook. Room was suitable for one night stay, restaurant was very good value for money. The service in the restaurant was excellent. We will return, next time we will be more specific about a room with a view over the pool.

Review 131:A toilet that leaked water for the two nights that we were there and then didn't work at all. The paper not delivered despite the sign being out and no biscuits to have with tea. General shabbiness of the bathroom.Room 207

Review 132:we were visited by cleaning staff one too many times in a matter of hours. did not wait for us to open door, instead knocked and then entered. not appropriate.

Review 133:facilities are great and very well presented

Review 134:tired decor carpet threadbare in places , no separate shower only shub and very old with mould on bath edges , fridge has no ice tray, dirty spa pools full of debri and leaves spa headrest cushions faded and tired fittings not maintained generally, wallpaper peeling in pavilion overall, not good value disappointing to previous stays

Review 135:excellent buffet, staff very helpful and courteous nothing was too much trouble

Review 136:The heated swimming pool is a delight. There is lots of space, the beds were very comfortable and the staff were lovely - very friendly but professional. The breakfast was very nice, enough choice to suit everyone.
