Reviews for George Kerferd Hotel
Review 1:Would have enjoyed breakfast more if we didn't have to supply our own yogurt and fruit for the muesli. Would have loved to hire the bikes for a couple of hours only in the late afternoon for say about $10 instead of $20 for the whole day. Rooms were a bit on the small side but ok though. Outside pool area could do with some jazzing up. (market umbrellas and more plants)
Review 2:Having access to the pool and tennis court. Very nice gardens surrounding the hotel created a wonderful old world atmosphere. Licensed bar was great. Pleasant and helpful staff.
Review 3:I asked the young lady at breakfast if I could have a slice or two of gluten free bread and was dismissively told that there was none. The previous day the young male staffer said that they always had plenty in the freezer. I felt that I was fobbed off but it was New Years Day and the female staffer seemed a bit tired.
Review 4:The motel is situated in a serene and historic environment. The onsite cafe restaurant serves excellent food and a very basic continental breakfast is included. My wife and I first stayed at the modern motel complex and later at the art-deco nurses' building known as "Linaker "next to the now defunct mental asylum.
Review 5:Great location in beautiful and interesting landscaped grounds of the old Beechworth mental asylum. Nice and quiet. 5 minute drive downhill to town. Would stay again.
Review 6:Just a suggestion, not a complaint - basic continental breakfast was fine but some fruit and yoghurt would have been lovely.
Review 7:Location was great, set in the park meant the surroundings were quiet. Pool and tennis court were useful. Plenty of outside space, tables and chairs available for our group of friends to use.
Review 8:The spa didnt work and the sauna was closed. The shower was noisy and tempermental.
Review 9:Interesting and beautiful location on grounds of an old asylum. Great pool and restaurant was delicious. Good value for money.
Review 10:The bed was only a double and you would expect a queen size bed in a hotel of that standard but it was a comfortable bed. Good walking distance to town but the hill is challenging on the way back, especially in the heat - not the fault of the hotel though!
Review 11:Good service from friendly staff Windows that open and air con that could be controlled within the room Good sized bathroom Good water pressure in the shower
Review 12:The fact that the resturant wasn't open...really dissapointing. And there was no place to relax out by the pool...unless you wanted to lie on the grass...and no....a bench seat doesn't cut it!!!!
Review 13:We liked the location, and the setting.
Review 14:the soundproofing in the neighbouring bathrooms need to be addressed, we could hear other people using the toilets and the sounds that can accompany that.
Review 15:The bed was very comfortable and the surrounding gardens beautiful.
Review 16:The room only had one chair.the bed was very short my husband and I are not tall but we hang over concidrably. Was not comfortable. Would not stay in a double room again , I would hope other rooms had longer beds..the meals we're lovely, but the restaurant need to be open more nights, we stayed the weekend and the first half of the week.
Review 17:Quiet location, but close to everything we needed. The grounds were lovely.
Review 18:The reception didn't mention about the continental breakfast until the morning of our departure
Review 19:Love the location of the gardens and the quiet surroundings. The Nurses accomodation was excellent at Linikre.
Review 20:Ordered Gin & Tonic, but couldn't get a slice of lemon. Bar staff had to go the kitchen to get the lemon!!! Never had a G&T served without lemon before.
Review 21:A beautiful place to stay.
Review 22:Not relevant really... maybe better locking mechanisms on bathroom door and easier way to manage the heavy curtains to open and close.
Review 23:Environment and location and staff - they were fun and happy.
Review 24:Room was quite small
Review 25:Location, lots of walks and good setting Service standard excellent Restaurant on premises with extensive menu was a major attraction
Review 26:Not a huge issue but pillows very thin and not very comfortable
Review 27:Surroundings are beautiful , staff very pleasant and main courses in restaurant for dinner were terrific. Very good value and location
Review 28:The complimentary breakfast was a little awkward if there were a few people trying to access it at once as the layout was a bit congested. The double rooms are very small.
Review 29:The location set amid beautiful gardens. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and we were given a free upgrade of room. The decor was very plain but the room was clean and the bed was very comfortable.
Review 30:This used to be a psychiatric/retirement facility and the structure of the building as it relates to that purpose can't be hidden. Cafe (add on) is cherry but general ambience is dour. Prison style metal doors on room don't help. Staff on front desk uninformative and provided poor customer service when we complained about cold shower. We had to put up with a late night party down the hall and people banging on the front door to get let in at 2am. Fire door was not alarmed and guests left it open open. We complained to hotel Manager who was sympathetic but didn't do anything to make up for our poor experience experience.
Review 31:Close to town but off the main strip. Received a free continental breakfast that was unexpected and a bit more than your typical budget conty.
Review 32:The food at the restaurant was excellent. Highly recommend the food. We did the ghost tour at the mental asylum which was fantastic, our guide played the part of the Doctor very well. Highly recommend the tour.
Review 33:We stayed three nights and after leaving the hotel early 8am on the second day for the whole day, we arrived back to our room at 10.45pm to find that the room had not been serviced. We had to chase around to find staff to supply us with clean towels etc late at night. We also had some soiled towels in our bathroom on initial arrival at the hotel.
Review 34:Loved the gardens in which the hotel is situated.
Review 35:The "double" room is quite small with little space to put a suitcase. Shower was cold but maybe due to too many people showering at same time. The poolside spa was cold ( couldn't find switch to turn on) and we got locked outside when we went to pool ( no facility to swipe keycard to re- enter), so had to walk around building to front door .
Review 36:beautiful surrounds in the old asylum grounds, on edge of town near old buildings, farms yet short walk to everything.
Review 37:Scenic serene location, friendly staff, helpful & efficient, knowledgable about the property & it's history & Beechworth as a tourist destination. Will stay again
Review 38:The receptionist not at all welcoming (after a very long drive ) didn't even have a map of the area ti assist us . Hotel very quiet but seemed an effort to book us in! Hotel feels very clinical lacks any ambiance. The room was very small and clinical.
Review 39:The room was clean and bed comfy and air conditioning kept room warm as it was a chilly night.
Review 40:The lack of staff, closure of the restaurant for both breakfast and dinner, a map of the hotel precinct would have been very helpful, some of the facilities are closed eg sauna room etc
Review 41:We liked the location and the hotel setting, the rooms were very comfortable. The History of the area was fascinating and spooky, we should have done the ghost tour, we will do next time. The bed was excellent and perfect after a big day out.
Review 42:Uncomfortable bed. No wine glasses , knives or plates in room. No milk in fridge for coffee. 3 trips to front desk to get these.
Review 43:The restaurant breakfast was the best we have ever had!!!!
Review 44:Staff come across as rude and no attention to detail or much knowledge of how customer service should be given.
Review 45:Loved the King Deluxe suite as the room was very spacious, had nice furnishings and the spa was great too!
Review 46:Unsual shower arrangement. Disappointed that resturant was not open as options limited in town.Found unusual that no staff on duty at reception when checking out after 8am
Review 47:Clean room nice view from window after being upgraded
Review 48:we were quite disappointed to find on sunday morning that there was no buffet breakfast and very limited menu available. The fact that we were told apon check in that buffet was available was a big bummer!
Review 49:our stay was great! Comfy bed and suitable comfort of the overall room. Coffee in the restaurant was AMAZING!!
Review 50:I had no bad experiences, but I would have liked more cosy chairs in foyers etc. The breakfast was a little disappointing (burnt toast, and somewhat lazy service).
Review 51:The staff were quite magnificent: friendly and helpful. I really appreciated being contacted to let me know that I had left behind a pair of shoes - which I was able to collect the next week. The location is also wonderful: I hope to return in the spring and/or autumn to better explore the gardens.
Review 52:In my view every was excellent. We had a thoroughly enjoyable stay We were very impressed with the facilities at the hotel and the grounds were the icing on the cake. We attended a wedding at the hotel and were impressed with the chapel and the service at the reception.
Review 53:The room was tiny and barely had enough room for a portacot and didn't have a table or chairs, literally just a bed in a room. The photos online are deceptive and lead you to believe that the rooms have a sitting area and aren't clear that they don't
Review 54:The hotel was in a beautiful location and the gardens were lovely
Review 55:Room was very cold on arrival, took a long time to warm up, required a 2nd heater, floors were not mopped or vacuumed 2nd day, no heating in the corridors which were freezing, Restaraunt was also cold, generally very cold Hotel
Review 56:The room was very nice, spacious, very good bathroom, spa bath excellent, location and gardens lovely, very comfortable indeed despite being cold first night, enjoyed food in Restaraunt, good service, not put off coming back,
Review 57:Didn't feel like a hotel. Cold. Lacking atmosphere. Could of used local hygiene products/creams instead of honey from NZ.
Review 58:Good location, beautiful surroundings. Helpful staff
Review 59:At 4.00pm there was no one to greet us at advise us of the benefits of the hotel. The room was the size of a cell, and although there were only three rooms used in the complex there was no consideration of enhancing our stay.
Review 60:The bed and area around the venue was grand.
Review 61:Felt like a freezer from the time we walked in the front of the hotel a electric blanket would have been nice as temp outside was -3.5 degrees and heater on air con kept shunting off
Review 62:Close to the mental asylum
Review 63:Breakfast included would have been a bonus! It was a 15 min walk to Beechworth up/down a hill which we loved as it was quite spooky at night, but may not suit those with mobility issues. The room was quite basic but clean and comfortable - good value as accommodation in the area seemed quite pricey. Some wine and water glasses in the room would have been nice.
Review 64:The staff went out of their way to help us and advise of nearby must see places! Loved the history of the buildings and the grounds. I'm sure the pool would be lovely in high Summer. Had a great breakfast & dinner in the restaurant. Walking around the grounds - beautiful, and the ghost tour is a must.
Review 65:Lack of staff basically. No-one on reception desk when I arrived or thereafter really. I could have used a hand with my luggage as have bad leg. The hotel had a business meeting / convention on so was busy but I still felt this was not a valid excuse. It's unfortunate because the hotel is really lovely. Get more staff!
Review 66:The location is peerless, nestled in the May Day gardens. Plenty of walks just from the hotel. The hotel restaurant is good - excellent crepes- and the rooms well appointed.
Review 67:It was disappointing that there was no wifi access in the room and one had to sit in the reception area or go into the cafe to access it. Difficult if you have to access it for work related purposes as we did.
Review 68:Very welcoming on our arrival. Thanks Chris. The friendliness and service of Kelly in the restaurant was great. Evening meal was superb.
Review 69:Noise from weekend wedding, but fortunately not over a long period.
Review 70:Extremely comfortable bed Easy walking distance to town (for most) Low-key ambience Enthusiastic and obliging staff
Review 71:Both my husband and I got sore backs from sleeping on uncomfortable & very small bed. The room was also far too small with nowhere to put a suitcase.
Review 72:The setting and grounds were spectacular.
Review 73:The rooms arent sound proof. We could hear people coughing, talking and slamming doors all the time.
Review 74:Liked how close it was to the asylum. Lots of room to explore.
Review 75:We didn't like having to dash back to Melbourne after 3 days!
Review 76:A somewhat unusual place as it was previously owned by La Trobe Uni. The new owners make a great effort to transform the place into a nice hotel. The French Creperie/Cafe on premise is a great bonus. Food is absolutely authentic & staff extremely friendly. Great value for money overall in a gorgeous parkland setting.
Review 77:The restaurant wasn't open. Could be a wonderful hotel by improving the decor.
Review 78:Garden setting, quiet location yet close to town. Helpful staff, would stay again.
Review 79:Loved it all but disappointed we didn't experience any ghosts!
Review 80:Surrounds, staff, Beechworth, the Bosses guitar, the good presentation and taste the convenience and quiet
Review 81:My partner and i have been bragging about how comfortable the bed was. Great gardens, clean venue & friendly staff. Did have an issue with the toilet which wouldnt flush, made this discovery after recpetion had closed so couldnt get it fixed. Was able to use conference room bathrooms which was ok, little inconvenient in the middle of tthe night
Review 82:Mirrored cup boards directly opposite the bed is never a very relaxing feel to try to sleep next tDencall me a Feng shui junkie if you like.
Review 83:We have kept meaning tI go to a French restaurant, and of course this place has one. Of course it's nearby the old asylum, so if you are sensitively inclined, getting some sleep can be and interesting prospect... But at least you can take a shirt walk to the ghost tour at the asylum from here. If I wasn't travelling for business and I knew about this place and it's restaurant, I would still drive from Melbourne to dine here and possibly stay over before returning, as a nice short getaway.
Review 84:There's nothing there really to dislike but, as suggestions, the hotel will improve when the restaurant is available for dinners over the week-end and it would be nice if the pool was clean and there were loungers around it.
Review 85:The rooms are excellent - very clean and spacious with a modern spacious bathroom. The hotel is located in the most beautiful grounds and very well placed for exploring Beechworth and the surrounding area which is delightful.
Review 86:A very comfortable room that had all we required in a setting old relaxing grounds & gardens. The restaurant was very good, service excellent. We will be back again when next staying in Beechworth.
Review 87:Breakfast, We attended at 9am, there was only white bread plus an empty multigrain bag containing a crust only, poor quality cereal and cold coffee. I expect a Hotel of this calibre to provide a more upmarket selection of basic breakfast foods, especially as elsewhere in Beechworth the culinary standards are excellent.
Review 88:We are big coffee drinkers and we ran out of the complimentary coffee satchels every day. However, we soon realised we could get coffee in a take away cup from the restaurant. The gym and sauna? Well they don't exist. It is storage for bikes. The library had chairs stacked up in the room and lights were off every time I walked past. If it was set up as advertised it would have been more appealing to enter. It looked like another room used for storing chairs. Check out... Lack of. We paid at check in, no issue but when checking out, no one was at reception. There is a drop box to put your room key in. Felt it to be a little non personable. I saw an elder couple standing around wanting to find someone as they were checking out. After I dropped my key in the box they did the same but we're still looking for someone. It is nice to have someone ask how your stay was, small chit chat, thank you, safe drive etc.
Review 89:The location is superb. The surrounding gardens is very tranquil, we often went for walks and just sat on the grass watching the world go bye. The rooms are clean and comfortable bed. The staff are young but we found two in particular to be ever so friendly. I like be you can hire bikes for the day which is a great way to see mayday hills and even ride into Beechworth (mind the hill on the way back). All in all it was a pleasant relaxing weekend.
Review 90:Disappointed that our room was located in the modern and rather characterless part of the hotel, not the renovated Art Deco building that is featured on the website, this was not at all clear when I booked. Also it was further from the main st than it sounded. Cannot book meals or drinks from the on site cafe back to the room, rather inconvenient.
Review 91:Deluxe king room was certainly large with a nice spa and comfortable bed
Review 92:We arrived on Xmas Day and Beechworth was closed so we ended up not staying overnight as there was nothing to do on Xmas Day in Beechworth!
Review 93:The location, room, Beechworth is very pretty.
Review 94:Rooms too small, insufficient space for luggage, there were no table facilities for writing, check in for everyone at 2.00pm instead of it being staggered to avoid congestion, tv too small, rooms not sufficiently sound proofed, reception left unattended at busy times,
Review 95:Well located - close to shopping and other nearby attractions, set in lovely park like gardens.
Review 96:Rooms too small, unattended reception, everyone's check in time at 2.00pm instead of being staggered, failure to accept international credit cards such as AMEX, rooms so small difficult to find a position to place luggage, there were no writing table facilities, no telephone, tiny TV.
Review 97:Location, close to the shopping precinct and its setting among it expansive gardens.
Review 98:Corridors transmitted noise too easily. Some guests were inconsiderate early Sunday morning.
Review 99:Beautiful peaceful setting with large accessible grounds for walking and enjoying nature. Clean comfortable room.
Review 100:I would have preferred to be closer (walking distance) to the town centre. The room was very small and we had nowhere to put our suitcases (we had to place them in the corridor on the floor).
Review 101:The free continental breakfast during the week was a welcome surprise and the wifi worked well. The staff were very friendly and went out of their way to help us.
Review 102:Would have loved the small single room 5 connected to the king single room 7 it would have been great for family.
Review 103:Great location, attention to detail bedding, linen, toiletries, soft furnishings were all above expected. Loved the pool and option for bike hire. Creperie -yum. We stayed in a King Single perfect size for price. Kids stayed in a small single room next door - too small for a couple we thought it would make a great 2 bedroom room if connected.
Review 104:The main desk staff could have been more welcoming and helpful, customers appeared to be a problem to them rather than their livelihood. There were only 3 car spaces within close proximity to the hotel. The main car park was 500 metres away and the walk to and from was uncovered. I had to go to the service desk to get milk for tea and coffee, it wasn't replaced each day. The restaurant attached to the hotel - there were wines on the wine list that they had run out of, the same with beer, some tables did not have table cloths and there was no attempt to cover them before they sat you down, there were not enough staff, there was no dress code for the staff and on one occasion a staff member ate in the dinning room and tried to serve customers at the same time.
Review 105:The room was good, clean and the cleaning staff were considerate and professional. The food served in the attached dinning room was good and the meal size was generous.
Review 106:Small room but still good value Double bed but comfortable enough Most parking was a short walk away but not really a problem for us
Review 107:Quiet setting Fresh milk provided Nice restaurant for breakfast Handy to the Rail Trail for cycling Bike storage was easy Very friendly, helpful staff Good pool Bar facilities were good
Review 108:No milk in fridge for tea/coffee, sound proofing of rooms could be better. I could hear the person next door using hair dryer which was annoying.
Review 109:Beautiful surroundings, clean and comfortable and value for money.
Review 110:You can hear the conversation from the other room. My relatives are quite loud.
Review 111:The location was so quiet and relaxing. The staff was excellent and accomodating.
Review 112:Nothing
Review 113:We loved the place (Beechworth), the staff, the room. We loved the warmth of the staff, their friendliness, their care and concern. We will probably go there every year now. They were the best Australian hospitality staff we have encountered.
Review 114:The outside area adjacent to the conference room and the pool area was dirty and looked unkept. No chairs in the pool area and the garden was full of weeds.
Review 115:Its location and value for money
Review 116:Nothing!!
Review 117:The hotel was clean and neat. The location is spectacular in a garden setting. The staff were very helpful and welcoming, including the owner.
Review 118:rooms small and no access to outside from the room, like a sliding door etc
Review 119:Staff willing to assist in any way possible Rooms clean and tidy location lovely
Review 120:The beds could have been softer
Review 121:We 'overnighted' with a need to leave early the next morning, when we woke to the beautiful surrounds we immediately decide to come back for a weekend and actually have time to enjoy the location. The hotel surrounds were intriguing and the entire town seemed so pretty. The motel at the restaurant exceeded my expectations and we were very grateful that the staff are aware of the time it can take to get out of Melbourne and keep the kitchen open til travelling guests have checked in. See you again!
Review 122:because of function th day before the dining was unavailable over the LONG weekend!! Would have been convenient seeing we were a bit further away from the town centre. the beds were very short in our room.
Review 123:Lovely garden surrounds even though a bit far away from the town centre. Nice touch of a continental cookie in the room when we came back from a big day out.
Review 124:There was nothing to dislike.
Review 125:This hotel in beautiful grounds is affordable & comfortably roomy with clean, quiet rooms away from the middle of town but still walkable to Beechworth. This was our second stay and we will stay next year. Excellent meals are available late in the week.
Review 126:Not that we didn't like, but the one thing missing was a yummy good old fashioned hot breakfast. Cant go past a brekkie of bacon, eggs, beans and hot buttery toast.
Review 127:The George Kerferd Hotel is well appointed, we were greeted with a warm and friendly staff member, who ensured our check in went smoothly and with a minimum of fuss. All other staff we met on our stay were also warm and welcoming ensuring our needs were met. The hotel itself is situated in the beautiful Gardens of an old Australian institution rich with history and intrigue, called Mayday Hills.
Review 128:The staff were very friendly and gave us an upgrade which was unexpected but greatfully accepted. The grounds and just picture perfect and the history is to be remembered.
Review 129:THE ROOM, STAFF & GROUNDS ARE ALL EXCELLENT AND GREAT VALUE FOR MONEY. WE WILL BE BACK ..... AND BEECHWORTH, IT'S THE HOME OF BEECHWORTH HONEY!
Review 130:It was freezing outside, when you walked into the hotel foyer it was unexpectantly freezing also, no heating on! not cosy for such a shocking winters day. The ambiance of the place went straight out the window !
Review 131:The grounds are beautiful, rooms well appointed although I was under the impression there was Foxtel.
Review 132:No heating in building hallways which created cold draft in room. Shower room was very cold. Outside of building quite old and daggy looking.
Review 133:comfortable bed, friendly staff, beautiful grounds
Review 134:the weather was very cold misty rain
Review 135:wander the shops, market, honey shop and surrounding wineries, country out look from our room we felt very relaxed
Review 136:Couldn't completely close the door to the toilet room from the outside so door would creep open a little and all the warm air would escape into that room. Really didn't like the DVD player. After 30 minutes watching a movie with my son it starting freezing up, skipping parts of scenes and the audio was really hard to understand. We went to reception and got another DVD player and that did the same thing.
Review 137:heating in our room was put on before we arrived so it was nice and warm. Staff were very friendly and helpful.
Review 138:Attention to detail
Review 139:Food in the Restaraunt Amazing
Review 140:Everything.. It's in a beautiful spot .. Quiet but walking distance to everything .
