Reviews for Les Artistes Inn
Review 1:No heat, poor condition, few amenities. Windows did not lock, blinds would not function. Tv was small and hard to operate. Required two remote controls.
Review 2:Location
Review 3:You can hear everything. It's an older beautiful place with character but that means you hear house noises like doors shutting.
Review 4:The location is perfect and the decor is super homey and warm. It's just perfectly quaint.
Review 5:Loved the very home feeling and super welcoming staff. The owner was very friendly and helpful and recommended fantastic restaurants. There was a fire in the lobby which was so cozy that we almost didn't want to leave! Great location near everything. Very zen and laid back
Review 6:Eclectic construction and decor was calming, but some may find it kitschy.
Review 7:Very quiet. Right in Del Mar. Private back garden let me sleep with the French doors open.
Review 8:My only complaint is that for the price of the stay, they could have provided a continental breakfast.
Review 9:The ambience. Staff and owners very friendly and helpful. Location is excellent.
Review 10:I didn't think there was anything not to like, however, my girlfriend said the room was too small--I thought it was cozy.
Review 11:Beautiful lush garden landscaping; unique artsy decor and design. Super friendly helpful staff.
Review 12:sorta wishes they had a pool even though the ocean is so close.
Review 13:Second time staying here. My wife and I love les artistes! The staff is very friendly and calming which reflects the setting perfectly. They also maintain your privacy which we love. Loved seeing a new room this time they are so fun.
Review 14:Les Artistes is "quirky" to say the least. The 60s/hippie/Southwest-ish decor looks like it was done by someone talented but stoned. The bathroom in our room was the smallest I have ever been in. Still, we enjoyed our stay and had a good laugh over the 60s vinyl daisies in the shower and on the floor and other unexpected finds.
Review 15:The hosts could not have been more gracious. They really helped me on a very personal level with transportation issues from the train station. The property has a very fun vibe and is quite relaxing and homey. Lovely arty rooms with great beds and plenty of hot water in the shower. No frills but so much nicer than a standard business hotel.
Review 16:small TV...but other than that everything is great.
Review 17:The hotel is one of my favorites. Great staff and great art. Each room has wonderful architectural features.
Review 18:We liked everything about the charm of the place. We could sit outside and look at all the beautiful plants and hear the sound of water from the many fountains. Just needs a deep cleaning.
Review 19:No breakfast
Review 20:This was a cute and relaxing place to stay. The staff was friendly and helpful. It was in walking distance of the ocean and several places to dine. We will defiantly go back.
Review 21:This boutique hotel is lovely, quiet and fascinating. Each room reflects a very personal aesthetic representing a different artist or culture The owner is friendly and kind. It was more like being a guest in someone's home.
Review 22:No elevator. My partner has rheumatoid arthritis and wears full legbraces and uses a 4 prong cane It was hard for him to even get up anddown the stairs one at a time.. I'm in my 70's and had to takecare of the luggage, cooler, etc. myself which made me make 3 trips up& down the stairs to bring it all upstairs, then reverse and repeatthe same when we checked out. Would stay there again but woulddefinitely request a ground floor room. Also the huge"container" in the parking lot is unsightly.
Review 23:The ocean view was lovely. Grounds are beautiful, loved the room withunscreened windows and the waterfall and pond directly below ourwindows. Very disappointed that you turned off the waterfall at night. We were looking forward to going to sleep to the sound of the water& fountain. Loved having a real "KEY" instead of thosedreaded key cards that do not always work.
Review 24:Fabulous location just off the Pacific Coast Highway. Only minutes from the sea, it's a unique property, very comfortable, great coffee in the mornings, surrounded by fabulous gardens.
Review 25:The ambiance of the room and common areas. There was a fire in the central gathering area that was very nice. The little patio on the room with the waterfall was lovely.
Review 26:We did not get the room we thought we booked. Which has been a problem that they have not corrected from some time from what the staff said. The room we stayed at felt muggy and dusty. It felt overpriced for the quality of the room. The ocean view was pretty scant.
Review 27:It was a pretty close walk to the beach.
Review 28:No real bad experience but did have a little issue in understanding how the shower plumbing/valves operate.
Review 29:It is definitely not a Hilton/Sheraton/Comfort Inn...etc, either you like it or you don't. I like it for its charm and character of the building-rooms and within walking distance to the beaches, restaurants and stores in Del Mar.
Review 30:My soap dispenser broke, my jacuzzi didn't work, there was a shortage of towels and waste baskets, small room. Price of room was mis-quoted by manager and there was no compromise on price which I thought was a poor business move. Told to re-park my car when I didn't need to. No assistance with my bags from the car up 2 flights of stairs. Confusion as to why my door key didn't work. Slow service.
Review 31:The groovy property, waterfalls, ambiance.
Review 32:Bed was very uncomfortable, even though it was a low frame Japanese bed you sank deep in it. Still feeling the back pain.
Review 33:Location, Staff, the superior King room with ocean view patio, Del Mar as a destination
Review 34:The bed was a little too soft for my liking. I prefer a firmer mattress.
Review 35:This place was great. It has the feel of more of a bed and breakfast than a hotel. Each room featured a different artist. Our room was excellent and so were our friends room. I definitely would recommend this for someone looking for a quite and unique place to stay. There isn't a pool or room service but there everything you need is in walking distance.
Review 36:Not for everyone but was perfect for us. Amenities are basic but the essentials are covered.
Review 37:Extremely unique, unusual, artistic layout and design. Property is intimate and welcoming. Location is perfect - Beach, Dine, Night Life adjacent. Ample and convenient parking.
Review 38:Rooms could be a little for updated for some people, but the eclectic style of each room is what gives this place charm.
Review 39:Location, location location - just minutes from the beach, restaurants and pubs. It is an ideal hideaway.
Review 40:would have been nice to have lighting around the koi pond. sat in garden but too dark to enjoy the pond at night.
Review 41:the design, comfort, fireplace, people, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. my husband raved about the fireplace. I will definitely be back. Thank you.
Review 42:Been thinking about this question...staff was great, room was definetly fantastic, price was good, location for us was convenient. We liked everything about this place!
Review 43:This place is great! A little quirky, not a cookie cutter Holiday Express. Each room has a different theme. We really enjoyed our 4 day stay.
Review 44:the bathroom, if you want to call it that, is limited and small.
Review 45:while hiltons and other chains are predictable and comfortable. this hotel is special.
Review 46:It was hard to get to the beach. It had said that it was close to the beach. If you went straight to the beach it was close, but a cliff makes you walk quite a ways to get to the beach. About 6 blocks. Also the bill was quite a bit higher when I paid than was shown online.
Review 47:It has a great look to the motel. A lot of fountains, a fire place. The staff was great and they helped when ever you asked then a question. Restaurants and shopping were within walking distance.
Review 48:Bed wasn't to comfortable really stiff.
Review 49:the themed room was cool we got the Zen room and the room was bigger then I thought it was going to be. Loved the location walking distance from really great restaurants.
Review 50:A pool would be great but the ocean is super close.
Review 51:Lots of charm, beautiful flowers, fountains throughout - great location. A 2 minute walk to the beach, minutes from Solano Beach, Cardiff-by-the-sea and Encinitas.
Review 52:Great characteristics! Made me feel as though I was in a small apartment instead of just a room with a bed. The owners were very nice and welcoming. I would definitely go back again!
Review 53:My room was pretty but basic; while it had the little balcony and fountain outside (which was soothing) it was a little bit careworn.
Review 54:At the end of my stay, I was shown other rooms and blown away by the individuality and pretty touches... some of the rooms are really exceptional. Next time I would definitely pay a bit more and upgrade to the next size room. Much better than the equivalent chain motel/hotel. Very nice people....beach-y and friendly.
Review 55:The lighting in the rooms are a little on the bright side....
Review 56:So much love & creativity has been put into this small Inn on the edge of down town Del Mar. Every effort is made to make one feel simultaneously at home and transported to a different time & place, depending on which of the themed rooms you are staying in. Charming!
Review 57:I have been traveling to Del Mar every summer for the Horse Races. The Les Artistes Inn and there other property The Secret Garden is always my first choice. I love to am coffee and fruite. The location is excillent. The owners have been very personable.
Review 58:had to leave and go back to work....
Review 59:this place should NOT be called a hotel or motel.... it is more like staying in a close friends guest house in a wonderful, tropical setting
Review 60:The web site said room rate for 2 adults & children under 12 no charge. They wanted to charge for a second adult because we were not a couple. It was my daughter, myself & grandson. That makes no sense.
Review 61:The unique character.
Review 62:The zen room was authentic, amazing and a great experience. Lots of stores and restaurants in walking distance. Shore is 5 min walk followed by another 10 min walk by rr. Or save time by risking climbing down the cliff. Either way it's a gorgeous ocean view.
Review 63:The room the first night although very charming and comfortable had three French doors and was so bright we couldn't sleep past 6. The owner showed us another room that we were going to stay in the next night which was equally as nice , but when I booked it online for less money she gave me an attitude and put us in a less desirable and not quite as clean and no view. She even said I could stand in the corner behind the plastic chair and stretch my neck to see a little piece of the ocean. She claimed it was the only room left. When we left there was still vacancies.
Review 64:The first night we stayed we had a very nice clean room with a large patio and fire pit overlooking the ocean
Review 65:Problem with locking door and TV was very small.
Review 66:Outdoor patio with view of ocean. Did not use WIFI. Did not use tub but Furo room was good size, and liked the Decro.
Review 67:I only disliked two things about this place. One is that the room did not have a small fridge where my cousin and I could've stored food instead of going out multiple times to buy food. The second is that they don't sell water. It would be nice if they sold drinks as the weather can be extremely hot during the day. I would want to stay in the hotel rather than going out to the nearest convenience store to buy water.
Review 68:This cute hotel has a lovely and unique design that makes you feel at home. I loved the fact that the hotel was walking distance from the beach and only 30 minutes away from downtown San Diego. Situated in a good location with shops on both directions of the street. The room had a great view of the sunset and was a cute room that was well decorated. If I could I would rent the room for the rest of the year.
Review 69:A little pricy, but considering location I guess it's ok.
Review 70:Desing of the Japanese style Furo room with Japaneese soaking hot tub. Ocean was visible from the room, Nice balcony is in the comfort of shadow of few large trees. Complimentary coffee and fruits in the morning. More of a family type of hotel rather than mainstream corporate. A bit outdated but very nice design. The fact that its a little outdated has its charm. Kind bed was clean and nicely set and comfortable. Great location! Close to the beach and fantastic local restaurants. Staff is very nice and polite. They called me right after reserving the room online to get approximate arrival time and gave me the choice of room themes. Very nice!
Review 71:Convenient location! We arrived late and simply sent them an email stating that we were expected in after check out. They emailed back almost immediately stating they would stay up just for us. The gentleman that checked us in was wonderful showed us to our room and made us feel very comfortable. Communication is key! We loved the feel of our room I wish I could have seen all of them (each is designed after a different artist).
Review 72:I had to leave.
Review 73:Couldn't have imagined a more perfect place for my girlfriend and I to stay. Unique to the smallest detail, it makes you feel like you are in a special place rather than a carbon copied chain hotel (because you are). Bed was incredibly comfortable, slept better than any other hotel I can remember.
Review 74:Les Artistes is a place full of charm, heart, and character. Within this price range you'll have to look long to find just this-- because in other hotels/motels blandness seems to be the going idea of what one should offer. The staff was very nice, helpful and flexible. We enjoyed our stay and left refreshed, recharged, and inspired. We couldn't ask for much more.
Review 75:Personal attention by staff/owner. Comfy bed/soft sheets and pillows. Morning coffee, fruit and breads nice touch. Eclectic choice of rooms. Walking distance to beach and nice restaurants and shops of Del Mar.
Review 76:Billing error but they caught it right away and fixed it.
Review 77:I thought the rooms were interesting and nice. The front and back patios were very charming and helpful to rinse off sandy feet. The staff were very friendly and brought us breakfast treats every day.
Review 78:One room we stayed in didn't have a hair dryer.
Review 79:From the moment we walked in the owner made us feel welcomed. She showed us around so we could see how the rooms were all designed differently. They were all beautiful. We felt more like we were at a B&B rather than a hotel. We're from PA so I'm not sure if we'll get back to California. But, if we do this is where I'd want to stay. Also, the town was so pleasant. Many stores and resturants to choose from. Close to the beach.
Review 80:The TV didn't work and it was small and outdated from the 1990s. There was no shampoo or soap in the shower or bathroom. Waiting area was dusty and dirty. I asked for an early check out and nobody responded to my email. I called in for the favor as I did not want to be late for the wedding and the guy who answered was rude and unprofessional and all he said was no you have to check in after 3. I the. Tried reasoning and he was rude and just said No and hung up. I would have gotten better service at motel 6. Bed was uncomfortable and dogs were barking early morning and I was woken up. I will never stay here again or let alone recommend it. I was very disappointed.
Review 81:Only thing I liked was that it was near where the wedding took place.
Review 82:The internet photos were deceiving. There was no soap or an extra blanket or phone in the room. No WiFi in the room or in the public spaces.
Review 83:The two people who operate the inn, especially the gentleman were very helpful. The bed was very comfortable (if you like a soft mattress).
Review 84:No tissue in rooms.
Review 85:Artistic venue. Guests. Nearness to ocean.
Review 86:Love this place. Would be a good place for an artist or musician to hole up and write an album.
Review 87:Tv didn't work, they knew it didn't care
Review 88:The staff was ever so helpful. My room & patio were perfection.
Review 89:Great location! Awesome cozy rooms! Great customer service and care!
Review 90:N/A
Review 91:Down to earth. Feels like staying with a family not a big business hotel.
Review 92:Close to beach and restaurants. Very nice setting.
Review 93:Wwe specially enjoyed our interaction with the staff. We received excellent service.
Review 94:Room, amazing attention to detail, quiet peaceful place.
Review 95:It was small and charming and very convenient to everything and easy to find
Review 96:Great staff, great service, great atmosphere. John stayed around well past the latest posted check-in for us with no complaints!
Review 97:bed is uncomfortable
Review 98:It looks vintage
Review 99:Only the on and off WiFi

Review 103:The stuff was nice and friendly. The room was unique. Great experience!
Review 104:Peaceful and a great place for a quick getaway, less then a mile away from the ocean. Beautiful setup.
Review 105:Nothing.
Review 106:Everything.
Review 107:The rooms were very unique.
Review 108:I liked the room, it was very nice.
Review 109:Walking distance to Del Mar restaurants and shops.
Review 110:No phone. See through glass on door with no curtain. Fridge did not work. No breakfast. No vending. I could go on and on.
Review 111:The bed was comfortable
Review 112:great staff
Review 113:No wi-fi
Review 114:The owner was delightful in sharing her history of the rooms and her unusual former life as an architect.
Review 115:Good location with lots of parking. Cute and funky. Friendly staff.
Review 116:beds no clean....bed bugs RUSH on the tree guests
