Reviews for Forte De Sao Joao Da Barra

Review 1:Cecilia very kindly upgraded us to one of the old barracks rooms. Fantastic....got a real feeling of history in this place. Amazing. The whole site is so very relaxing and very unique.

Review 2:Basically everything! Great experience, perfect location and our wonderful host Cecelia! Plenty of good restaurants just around the corner and a beautiful beach on the doorstep. Can't think of anywhere better to stay when visiting the Algarve!

Review 3:This place was amazing and the host was absolutely lovely, it was peaceful and had everything we needed to relax and unwind we will definitely be staying there again

Review 4:No wifi in the bedrooms, but good to hae an escape from the internet!

Review 5:Fab location, beautiful property. Breakfast was delicious! Cecelia was a great help.

Review 6:Earlier breakfast than 9 o'clock? Can hear sounds from neighbouring room through open door/sliding window

Review 7:Warm welcome on our arrival. And well looked after by friendly and service minded staff throughout our stay. Relaxed atmosphere in historic environs, away from the crowds. Scenic breakfast overlooking the lagoon. Being transported to and from the Beach by a true gentleman of a boatman. Short walk to excellent restaurants.

Review 8:We thought for the price, that breakfast could have been better.

Review 9:We loved the location and the serenity within the fort - Cecilia is a very friendly, helpful and most hospitable host and is perfectly suited to this position! Located 5 mins to some excellent restaurants in Cabanas de Tavira - you must order the prawn cocktail at Restaurante Pedro!

Review 10:Not so much dislike but advice! The short walk round the outside of the Fort to the Promenade is unlit - so take a torch!

Review 11:The lovely hotel grounds in historic fort with views from ramparts over the Ria Formosa. Complementary ferry across the lagoon to the fabulous Cabanas beach. Hotel Manager, Cecilia is charming and couldn't be more helpful.

Review 12:The building and its position are perfect - you have a beautiful view onto nature reserve. Lovely rooms with antique furniture and paintings, but modern comfortable bathrooms too. Cecilia, the owner, is very helpful and friendly. You feel like a private guest. The breakfasts are generous and delicious, served on terrace overlooking the sea. The position is private but also very convenient. 5 minutes walk to the boat for the beach and a selection of excellent restaurants. This is as far from the mass tourism of Algarve as it could be - personalized and unique experience

Review 13:Second time we have visited. Really like the history and atmosphere of the fort. Amazing location right by the sea and always made to feel welcome there. Cabanas is also a relaxing place to visit with good restaurants and beaches within walking distance.

Review 14:why put bidets in bedrooms...nobody uses those. waste of space and costs. As room doors did not fit properly (bottom edge especially), we 'bothered' a neighbour's sleep (!) having a drink outside at 11ish!!

Review 15:the fort itself breakfast outside on sunny, warm, windless mornings a drink under an old tree the view from all around, especially the river Formosa.

Review 16:The location is beautiful ,accommodations tastefully appointed, staff attentive and breakfast delicious.

Review 17:The hostess Cecilia is adorable! The whole atmosphere is fantastic! The place just needs a few more improvements in the hotel facilities

Review 18:Cecilia, she's the best and we hopefully will see her again sooner rather than later :)

Review 19:Great. Outstanding. Where to go for relax, beautiful location, quietness.

Review 20:Nos encantó todo: el sitio, la ubicación, la rehabilitación del Fuerte, la vista sobre la ría, el ambiente zen, la amabilidad de Cecilia...

Review 21:Hard to find but great place for a relaxed break away from the usual tourist hustle & bustle. Very secluded hidden within walls of fort.

Review 22:Breakfast only served at 9:00 (would prefer much before that)

Review 23:Location, staff, historical building, quiet place, fantastic view over the sea

Review 24:Everything from location, facilities, host, quality, tranquility were all above expectation.

Review 25:The location and historic hisorty

Review 26:On arrival we were greeted by the lovely Cecelia! Inside the fort it was relaxed, modern and tranquil.

Review 27:Nothing

Review 28:Staff were welcoming and helpful Location spectacular Peaceful and relaxing Fantastic scenery

Review 29:We loved the fabulous design of the rooms. The peaceful seclusion of thehotel. It is steeped in history and carefully maintained. The breakfastwas a sumptuous feast and the staff took the greatest pain to make uscomfortable.

Review 30:Internet in only one room in the main building.

Review 31:Our hostess was most accommodating. We had been unaware of the time change from Spain to Portugal, and she took it all with a smile and laugh...especially as we tried to get breakfast at 7 am..thinking it was 8! The fort was amazing with wonderful antiques in the main building. We had a great time!

Review 32:Room did not have a safe which may be an issue for some but the place is very secure being in a fort! A little difficult to find the first time so make sure you have a map.

Review 33:The location is unique being located in a former fort which has been beautifully restored. Once you step through the grand entrance you enter a peaceful backwater of the Algarve. If you need to relax away from modern life then this is the place for you. Rooms are comfortable and with there only being 10 rooms, the place is never busy or noisy. The breakfast terrace has a lovely view across the river to the sand dunes and beach and the croissants were delicious. The local town (Cabanas) is a short walk from the fort and has a range of restaurants and bars. Cecilia is welcoming and there for you if you have any questions or problems.

Review 34:Access to the pool and terrace could be better, especially for less mobile guests, although I was able to use private stairs following my injury. also air conditioning is needed in all the rooms, fans and icepacks to use in them are provided but not especially effective..

Review 35:Lovely room and Cecilia the manager is an exceptionally warm and welcoming person. she was a great help when I injured myself and put herself out to help above what I would have expected. Views from the terrace are fantastic, watching flamingos fly past, stunning, chameleon companionship for evening drinks on the terrace, just brilliant.

Review 36:Cecilia was a gracious host and the Forte couldn't have been more wonderful. The location was perfect and incredibly peaceful. It is steps to restaurants and a boat ride to the beach. Breakfasts were delicious. Highly recommended!

Review 37:I personally liked most of the aspects, however, for people who don't like to walk, it may be a problem. The beach is a small walk and short boat trip away. Boat is taking lodgers free of charge to the beach all day. This will be an issue with any accommodation in Cabanas though.

Review 38:Had a fantastic relaxing stay. The staff is very personal and friendly and reallly made me feel welcome. Just after 3 days I felt like I was leaving friends' place. I was after a quiet peaceful holiday and this what you can certainly get at Forte De Sao Joao Da Barra.

Review 39:Wonderful place, very friendly and very relaxing. We would come again.

Review 40:Perfect place
