Reviews for Queen's Hotel

Review 1:We complained numerous times about our broken toilet seat and non-usable shower. They said they would bring the issues up with the manager. We mentioned it again when we checked out upon which we were given a review card to fill in. They need to take complaints seriously and deal with them immediately. Bad customer service for such a beautiful hotel.

Review 2:Beautiful old building with lots of character- big room with wooden floor and high ceilings. Great pool and garden! Nice breakfast.

Review 3:Although I get the old world charm with the place, the facilities are in need of an update. Floor is falling apart, the kettle provided has seen better days, no hand towels, average mattress etc. Simple things like a phone directory sticker, and extra outlets in room would have helped.

Review 4:Awesome location, literally across the road from the Kandy lake and 5 minutes walk from Temple of the Tooth.

Review 5:-Off putting staff - Understaffed and bad attitude -Bad buffet -Higher floor rooms access need a 10 min walk through stairways and deserted hallways

Review 6:-Location -Heritage building

Review 7:It got quite noisy in the morning, as the city wakes up. The price that is shown on booking is not final, they write about it, but quite hard to calculate the very final price, as there are 3 different %

Review 8:Location is super centric. Huge and quite tasty breakfast. Quite garden inside with a pool, very nice! VERY high ceilings. Old-styled hotel, one can easily feel colonial spirit.

Review 9:Wifi is horrible, noisy before 8 PM, bathroom cleaness is moderate, hot water is a problem, breakfast varities isn't changed, small one with little facilities at night

Review 10:Location, botique style, staff are cool

Review 11:Bar is not no smoking. Had to sit breathing smoke from chain smoking other guests. Staff a bit casual and superior as if guests are a bit beneath them.

Review 12:Splendid experience staying in this historic building

Review 13:Wait for check in, sent to room, unpack take my shoes off, asked to come down within 5 mins for payment Asked to do two transaction one after other, not combining into one invoice? 5 transactions within two nights stay - confusing, forgot to bill for one breakfast Spend 10 mins checking out and paying, hands invoice, then called at exit door and asked to wait while check mini bar for any use Called reception Given 245 number for laundry, number engaged for over 30mins not sure if even correct?, had to go down to reception to place laundry service order Promised 9am delivery of laundry, had to ring at 10am wait 5 mins and then had to go down to reception before delivery and told it has been ready since 9am No wifi in room 228 except near entrance door

Review 14:Location, fantastic building, good size room

Review 15:Is the second time i stay in the hotel, mainteinance is poor, breakfast is average, old elevator, smell in the toilette.

Review 16:Big room and clean.Nice view facing Temple

Review 17:The building was ancient and beyond renovation. The room did not have clear glass panes so we could not see outside. We felt claustrophobic. If you open the windows, the scene was not pretty and also the insects would come in. The room was damp. By the evening, tiny insects started coming in to the room. In the morning you wake-up with them. It rained in the evening and the rain water seeped in to the room. The room was very badly illuminated. No light or plug point near the dressing table. In the night we heard veered sounds outside the room.

Review 18:Reception staff attitude, breakfast

Review 19:Old property, need renovation desperately. Scary creaking lift, leaking roofs, old furnitures, noisy fans, poor plumbing, bad linen etc. Least choice for vegetarians in the menu.

Review 20:Location

Review 21:The rooms and bathrooms were old, cracked tiles and very old bathtubs. We requested for a room away from the street side but were given 2 rooms racing the road. The blaring horns and lights from the traffic kept us awake until well past midnight. Staff's attitude at reception was condescending when I asked about my request for a 'quiet' room. Will not be back. Mattress was old and of poor quality!

Review 22:Hotel was conveniently located.

Review 23:Hotel badly needs updating- new mattresses and bathrooms. The staff so their best but the company need to make some serious investment into the property

Review 24:Great location next to the lake and temple. Staff friendly and food great

Review 25:Had to leave early and was advised packed breakfast would be ready but had to wait as it was still being prepared. Was also told the room had a pool view but instead had a view of what looked like a roof.

Review 26:Centrally located. Liked the old yet good look of the hotel.

Review 27:This old-style hotel has very good location. It's situated in the center of Kandy, near the lake. Good and various breakfast with national meals fnd fruits. Very friendly personnel. And absolutly great old elevator!

Review 28:the location is very good. It's very near the kandy lake, and the tooth temple. And it has a food city which is their supermarket near the hotel. You can buy dilmah tea in thesupermarket. The staff is also nice.good service.

Review 29:Room was smelling bad, there was no hot water for shower, there was something wrong to close the curtains, elevator was out of order and the pool was dirty.

Review 30:Close to city center, temple and lake

Review 31:The adjoining room had a very loud family in and given the lack of soundproofing and wooden floors, we were up most of the night. The beeping of the local traffic outside was also loud from very early

Review 32:Loved the style and location of the hotel

Review 33:On the first night we suffered a lot, because the worn-out air-conditioner was as noisy as if it were raining cats-and-dogs, and early next morning huge noise came from all sorts of vehicles outside the window! We moved to another room the next day.

Review 34:Architeture.

Review 35:Facilities are a bit too old mostly, although air-conditioner is provided.

Review 36:1. It is next to the Temple and Kandy lake. Historic building with old furniture. 2. Breakfast is full and tasty. Some dishes are specially cooked or prepared for each customer.

Review 37:The room was too noisy, impossible to sleep till 2 am. Very bad wifi connection. Bed really short and small, if you are 1.70 m you almost cannot fit in!

Review 38:Very good location, just next to the Tooth Temple.

Review 39:Beware the Standard Triple Room--this is just a regular double room with another bed put in it, which means the whole room is very cramped and crowded. Breakfast is OK, but needs some work. The custom-made omelets were burnt two out of the three days we were there. Front desk staff was not very helpful. In fact, we've never seen staff so quick to just say no to any request, with no followup. This would include the cashier refusing to make change for us, something seemingly in the job description. It was very disappointing.

Review 40:This hotel is in a fabulous location--right across from Kandy Lake and next door to the entrance to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth. Very easy to walk around Kandy. The beds were comfortable, and the whole hotel has a faded elegance that can be quite charming.

Review 41:No proper plug socket to fit kettle dressing table being used as tea and coffee table having to place the kettle on the floor and move the TV to get to s pkug socket, that did not fit the pkug, even the adupter that was given to us was not compatible poor lighting or lights not working ac and fan can not be regulated TV about 30 years old and not working room service calling the room 4 times between 3 am and 4 am

Review 42:Location and staff that could not do enough to hrlp

Review 43:The room was very noisy! Only a thin wooden door that's fixed and locked separated our room from the next. We could hear our neighbours speaking as if they were standing in our room, and we woke up when they did, even though they weren't being loud. Also note that the additional taxes aren't yet included in the price mentioned on booking.com This easily adds 20$ per room per night.

Review 44:Beautiful old style hotel right by the lakeside, exactly where the bus stops and a 5 min walk to the temple of the sacred tooth or the most known dance show. Staff is professional and friendly, the rooms are comfortable and the bathrooms are nice and clean. We didn't use the pool (it rained) but it looked nice. The breakfast is simply amazing as it has absolutely everything!

Review 45:Hotel needs a proper restoration. Have to install soundproof windows since it is in the heart of the city.

Review 46:Reception staff was very friendly and attentive and it is in the the best location in the city. Walking distance to many interesting places.

Review 47:travel agents did not tell me the hidden charges at the beginning of the booking staff take very long time to respond car was parked by them and when i want it back i had to do three reminders

Review 48:No soundproofing on windows, noise from street as if window was open, bathroom is dated

Review 49:Friendly staff, good location, nice atmosphere of colonial times, huge room, impressive elephant made from towels

Review 50:This could be a beautiful opulant hotel, however it has seen better days and is if need of refurbishment. Our room was ok for the price, however little things annoyed me: there was an old fashioned wardrobe in the room without a proper hanging rail, the chest of drawers smelt so musty you couldn't put clothes in and we had no water from the shower the first night. The breakfast was really basic and we didn't fancy trying an evening meal there. We walked over to the Sharon Inn on the opposite side of the lake for a meal one evening (back packers hostel) and had a fantastic 3 course meal (highly recommended).

Review 51:Great location next to Kandy Temple and the river. Reasonable price

Review 52:The check-in service need improving, actually it makes me wait for quite a long time.

Review 53:The location is super good, near Kandy Lake and the temple. Besides, I really love the swimming pool in the back yard. It's not small, with a smaller pool for children. It'll be a best option for family tour. The breakfast is buffee, offering various dishes for customers.

Review 54:Location was great. We liked the colonial style in the hotel! We had booked a room for 3 people because there wasent any double rooms available on Booking.com. The staff was great and changed the room to a double room without any additional costs!

Review 55:Extremely nosily especially rooms road facing. At breakfast they appeared to be a lack of cutlery and staff were attentive but forgetful - trying to assist everyone at once which didn't work too well!.

Review 56:Centrally located

Review 57:The rooms were dirty, our Air conditioning was broken and only after making a big fuss did they change our rooms. The shower pressure was terrible, one moment it was scorching hot and the next cold. There is absolutely ZERO sound proofing, it is very, very load in the rooms, it feels like all the trucks and cars pass right through your room. The walls have mold in several areas. I found strangers pubic hair in the 'clean' towels and sheets and in the bathtub…

Review 58:the location is right in the center of Kandy right next to all the sights one must see in the area. The hotels is historic and very big. Great breakfast and dinner area. Good Buffet.

Review 59:cleanness in low condition. although good lake-view, window glass too dirty. facilities too old. staff polite but cold. by payment in cash, small changes are always "fogotten" by the staff man automatically. That's not much money, however, uncomfortable as for such a standard hotel. By checkout have to wait 25mins.

Review 60:very good location. big room, big bed. coffee/tea maker, minifridger

Review 61:Bathroom, water temperature (cold) and pressure Wifi didn't work Overpriced - even considering the location

Review 62:Excelent location, better is impossible Historic bulding It is ok for one night

Review 63:Unfortunately our room had a bad sewer smell. The breakfast was great and there was plenty of choice, but the coffee was absolutely dreadful, the worst I drank during my whole two weeks in Sri Lanka. There was an option to get a more or less decent espresso, but then you were charged extra...

Review 64:Beautiful colonial architecture in the center of town. Straight across the lake and the temple. Nice swimming pool, nice bar. Great experience and not to expensive

Review 65:Common areas like the lobby and breakfast area are not air conditioned (because they are too big and open to the outside). Front desk staff was good, but the travel tour desk representative was not helpful and quoted us an outrageous price for a car hire service.

Review 66:Classic hotel that shows its age a little bit, but holds up well and offers a tremendous breakfast spread, free WiFi, in-room AC, and perhaps the best location in the entire city.

Review 67:We were in room 102 which was very dark and small because the window was obscured by the ensuite. It felt claustrophobic. I had my only poor nights' (2) sleep there throughout our 3 week trip. I think other rooms are better.

Review 68:The location is brilliant and the staff are very friendly.

Review 69:Traffic noise on 1st floor (112 & 114) was bad in evening and morning. Lighting in the room was terrible, Could read nothing, even with my glasses. Curtains in both rooms were heavily stained. Breakfast was sparse and service almost non-existent.

Review 70:The location is awesome just opposite to tooth relics temple and can see Kandy lake from the balcony, lots of restaurant around! The hotel design is gorgeous

Review 71:Check in was a bit of a disaster, they insisted that we pay for our stay up front - despite offering our credit card details or a deposit. This was particularly disheartening as I watched them check in a family ahead of us with no insistence on payment up front - it must have been our backpacks! The room itself was very pokey and uninspired in terms of decor (for the price, we were expecting much more). We also had a cockroach in our room - we stayed in 7 other accommodations around Sri Lanka (varying from guesthouse to resort) and this was our only cockroach experience. In fairness, other travellers we met tended to like this hotel - so maybe our experience was an isolated event. However, we would not stay here again.

Review 72:The bar staff were very friendly and helpful.

Review 73:The rooms had only 1/2 plugs. Staff at reception had to reminded twice to bring adaptors. The sheets on one of the beds were wet. We rang for them to be changed but the mattress still felt damp. The hot water was scarce. The overall building felt damp and worn. The door to our room and bathroom were badly worn. Not worth the money we paid.

Review 74:The breakfast

Review 75:past its best years, but what is expected really. Pool looked a little tired Dinner was standard and nothing spectacular

Review 76:Grand entrance and accommodating staff Wifi was actually free. The bar was a nice area

Review 77:Hot water not hot enough,

Review 78:Centrally located, old British charm, If you book this hotel ,request free WiFi as if you don't request it ,is $5 per hour,,, Sri lanka system you dont ask you do don't get!!!!

Review 79:Staff don't know how to run a hotel. Knocking on someones door at 6:30 am to see if they want their rooms clean is just plain stupid. That's if you're lucky and they actually knock. Twice they just barged in. Even without a do not disturb sign, that's very poor form. Also, I had a guest visit me for the day (a female, I'm male), and we briefly went to my room to get out of the heat and use the WIFI to look at the train schedule. They made such a fuss about it, demanded i pay an extra fee for another occupant, even though I told them she wasn't staying the night, and it would just be a few minutes. They just said "it wasn't allowed." That was when I had it and promptly left that awful hotel.

Review 80:Location, and that is all.

Review 81:- small room - you can hear some noise from the hall in your room - the lightening is not bright

Review 82:+ localization of the hotel + a room with balcony, safe, conditioner, ventilator. + very friendly staff + atmosphere of old-fashioned luxury + free wifi

Review 83:Maybe add a few more international channels on the satellite TV esp news and sports in english

Review 84:View over the lake , close to buses train tub yuk taxis food places and shopping

Review 85:The worst coffee I ever had during a hotel breakfast. Even in the former DDR they had a better coffebrew. The one responsible for this trash should be send to school or be shot.

Review 86:The colonial atmosphere and the kind staff. The dinerbufet was excellent and great value for money. Also the breakfastbufet was ok. The hotel is lovely situated at the lake and close to the temple of the tooth (former royal palace).

Review 87:My room was a bit too basic with its tile floor...but it was ok

Review 88:The atmosphere is amazing...this place is stuck in its past...the bar-lounge is excellent and the pool is great too.

Review 89:The hotel is right next to the Sacred Tooth Temple and the lake so a great central location. It's a short took took ride to the station and to restaurants on the hill overlooking the lake.

Review 90:I loved being surrounded by the old antique furniture and felt transported back in time to the early 1900s . Thankfully the property seems not to have been altered too much from its lovely original colonial self. I loved it there and would stay there again . Very charming indeed .

Review 91:Busy, noisey at night. Staff also busy and programmed to get people in and out, no questions asked (or answered!)

Review 92:Great central location. Old hotel with lots of memorabilia and atmosphere. A time piece.

Review 93:Hotel was overbooked when we arrived so had to wait for a room, then we're given a twin room instead of the double room we had booked.

Review 94:Friendly staff, great location, old fashioned decor creates a very nice atmosphere.

Review 95:Very noisy, windows do not close properly and the hotel is located on a very busy street. It is also dusty, for the same reason.

Review 96:Great location close to the temple and on the lake. Very nice swimming pool.

Review 97:The hotel is in urgent need of improvement whilst retaining its historical character. The lift does not seem to work. The rooms are large, but need double glazing as there is street noise. The curtains were old dirty and stained. The mattresses were worn out. There was a dead cockroach next to my bed. The bathroom was in a very poor condition. There was no hot water. The staff at reception were not particularly pleasant or helpful ( possibly because it was understaffed and they seem to work very long shifts). I thought that the buffet dinner and breakfast were mediocre to poor.

Review 98:The location next to the Temple of the Tooth and the lake is good. It is truly an old colonial hotel. Most furniture and fittings seem to be about a hundred years old. The foyer is magnificent and the bar is atmospheric

Review 99:If I had to mention anything negative might suggest they improve the quality of the garden furniture by the pool and maybe include some umbrellas - it could be wonderful. But loved it anyway.

Review 100:Loved this hotel with its beautiful colonial feel and feeling or airiness. The location was perfect right in the middle of the city, right across the road from the Temple of the Tooth and 2 mins walk to the fabulous market. The fact it had a swimming pool given its city location was an added bonus. We had booked bed and breakfast but ended up eating our evening meal here as well as the buffet was only SLR 1,500 (£7.50) each and was really good. Loved our evening drinks in the bar before dinner and would certainly stay here again.

Review 101:We were disappointed with the first room offered.it was right above busy Main Street which would obviously have caused problems with sleeping, particularly in the mornings.first alternative offered was some distance away from reception and was in the middle of a wing being renovated ! Eventually were offered another room although we had to pa y a surcharge !

Review 102:Central location and good food.

Review 103:Not being able to contact Hotel Reception beforehand to find the way to Hotel Parking before arriving there. As a result, we very nearly went in the wrong direction in a one way street and got fined by the police. Please update the website with correct contact numbers.

Review 104:Close proximity to Dalada Maligawa.

Review 105:There is nothing much not to like but the hotel needs an upgrade which it is scheduled to have in 2016

Review 106:Perfect location on the lake and next to the temple

Review 107:When you are renting a Taxi from the hotel to a cheap price, remember also to ask how big car and how experienced driver you will get. Our 'bargain' send us on the hilly serpentine roads to Ella whit a Tata Nano driven by an unexperienced driver.

Review 108:The old colonial atmosphere was so charming.

Review 109:Room is spacious with little furniture, not so convenient and the bed is a little small for two persons. The lights in the room are sort of dark.

Review 110:The location is excellent and it's worth staying for at least one night in such a historically famous place. The swimming pool looks so nice from our room on the 4th floor in the evening and it's said the breakfast is good and only 50 RMB, but I didn't try it.

Review 111:Had to move room because of internal noise. Two electrical blackouts. Key didn't fit. Management distrustful of my complaints, complacent, made no apology of offer of compensation for dismal series of facility failures

Review 112:Good location and lovely building

Review 113:It looks and feels like a hotel that oncr was very luxury. It is in need of some refurbishment now.

Review 114:It's pretty much 30 meters from the side entrance of the tweple of the tooth and in front of the lake. Very decent price.

Review 115:The building needs a little bit of work, but for the price it takes nothinaway from the stay.

Review 116:The staff are all extremely helpful at the Hotel. Any request was met instantly. That together with the location on the lake, and the lovely old building with huge rooms make for a great stay in Kandy. I would book here again whenever in Kandy.

Review 117:The noise from the traffic was bad and we could not have a nap during the day! We requested the Hotel to address this issue with the Kandy Traffic Police as this area should ideally be a "Horn Free" area considering that this is a sacred area. Double glazing of the windows could help. The toilet was clean but the toilet bowl was on an elevation which could be difficult for older guests to use.

Review 118:The Hotel was okay considering it was built a long time ago. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth, the Lake and the shopping area were accessible on foot which was a plus point as the traffic was appalling. The staff were very cordial, they checked us in even before the 'Check in time' and gave us adjoining rooms which we had requested for. The service was good. Great trip!

Review 119:Should have stayed longer

Review 120:Location,clean pool, classy bar Age of hotel 170 yrs Staff were very professional, friendly Chinese Restaurant with views of lake with good food Everything was First Class in this hotel Great value for money

Review 121:Very loud disco music below our room both nights! The first was a wedding party, so we hoped would be an exception, but unfortunately, the second night was worse!

Review 122:Lovely old colonial building, good location, spacious room, comfortable beds.

Review 123:A bit pricey but worth it

Review 124:The situation is the best in town, the rooms are quiet, the dinner buffet has good value for mney while the breakfast is excellent

Review 125:Very unhelpful staff with no knowledge of basics like getting a taxi. The rat running past us in the bar wasn't very nice. Had lunch there and all the food was cold so luckily they didn't charge us.

Review 126:Great location in Kandy on the lake. Walking distance to everywhere. Lovely old building. Good breakfast selection.

Review 127:Shower and taps could do with updating

Review 128:Everything!!! Spacious lobby and hallways. Lovely old lift. Friendly and helpful staff. Extremely comfortable large bed. Very effective air conditioning and the quietest fan I've ever come across. Stunning view over Kandy lake. Best location, next to the temple and lake.

Review 129:Unexpectedly cold shower when I was desperate to get warm, useless wifi in the rooms. We had requested adjoining rooms with our kids which didn't happen.

Review 130:Good location, nice big, colonial rooms, helpful tour organiser in reception.

Review 131:The hotel discriminates it's guest based on the color of your skin. I was very disappointed with this. I have brought this to the notice of the management who simply brushed it by just saying a "sorry" and went about their business. People there still think they are under the colonial rule

Review 132:Location is great

Review 133:the front-desk was - I guess, was very inexperienced and made several mistakes about payment

Review 134:the location was great, could not be better, just opposite the lake and the important Buddhist shrine nd in the oldest center of town

Review 135:Staff could use a bit of training, but they were always friendly.

Review 136:Though showing its age a little, this is a chance to stay in a slice of history before it is ruined by one of the fancy hotel companies. My room was very clean, large and the king bed was great. The breakfast is outstanding and the location couldn't have been better. Overall a memorable and fun experience!

Review 137:We stayed for two nights. The stay was excellent. The old hotel is very well maintained. Staff is friendly and courteous. Food is good. The location is excellent - right opposite the tee and the Lake. Great value for Mon.

Review 138:Lift is from 1850, beds from 1997. There is 7 security waiting at the gate. 3-4 reception crew, but still takes 20 minutes to check in. Bathroom was dirty, wasnt cleaned properly, my wife didnt shower. No wifi in the rooms (says there is).

Review 139:This hotel was strange.

Review 140:Like a lot of the older buildings in Sri Lanka it is a little rough round the edges but this only added to the charm

Review 141:We loved the location, the pool, the bar beside the pool and the colonial charm
