Reviews for Sudima Hotel Lake Rotorua
Review 1:Shower needs upgrading - Was given a room where the shower had broke but staff quickly changed rooms for us.
Review 2:Great location as was right next to the Polynesian spa. Staff was also very helpful.
Review 3:No lifts in the block we were in but portering help offered; there was an initial charge for WiFi which seems unnecessary when so many travellers need it now
Review 4:location by the lake and town centre and the Polynesian Spa; very easy parking; friendly and helpful staff; good food in the restaurant; bedrooms very comfortable and spacious; comfortable beds
Review 5:This hotel is in a great location, from here you can walk into town to do some shopping or dining. You can also walk along the lake and check out the natural scenery. The staff were very friendly and helpful and we enjoyed happy hour at the bar each night. We didnt dine at the Hotel as there are other restaurants we wanted to try nearby. The rooms were spacious and comfortable and we had a lovely view of the lake. My husband and i would stay here again.
Review 6:I have one word. Sulphur. If you have a respiratory condition or a delicate stomach then I highly recommend you don't stay in a hotel on the lake. Sulphur rises off of it and can become highly unbearable. After 3 days I was desperate to leave Rototua and I wouldn't return to this hotel it was suffocating. The windows are very old and provide no protection from the outside. Your room will also be filled with Sulphur. Bathrooms are marked do to the minerals in the water. But the piping needs to be looked at, air is getting trapped in them, I was in the shower and air passed through the pipes, I got a sudden hit of scolding hot water followed by cold water. Could be dangerous for young children. I had dinner one night in hotel, I ordered a vegetarian burger, a regular meat burger was presented to me. After complaining I got my vegetarian burger which didn't taste nice. Not long after I started having an allergic reaction to something in it (I suspect it was spinach as I'm allergic) and spent the next 3 hours being sick and on the toilet. I informed catering staff the next day. Wifi costs $10 per day for 2 devices, but seldom works, cuts out and requires you to re enter passwords on a regular basis. Not value for money! You shouldn't be charged at all for this service.
Review 7:Swimming pool is heated but can get crowded quickly when a big family group or friends are in there. Can become unpleasant quickly. The book able spa rooms are great. But could do with being drained and tiles scrubbed. Tours pick you up from reception. Breakfast was included in our room rate and was great. If it wasn't we wouldn't have used these service due to the cost involved!
Review 8:electrical socket in bathroom not working reported it but still not fixed 5 days later dirty linen left outside empty rooms along corridors , not attractive
Review 9:buffet breakfast very good
Review 10:A large hotel should not be charging for internet access - hostels and small hotels are able to provide enough free internet for emails etc. - no excuse for this.
Review 11:Staff went out of their way to be helpful.Well presented, cheerful, showed initiative. Room requests met. Walking distance to everything. Ordinary tourists separated from large tour parties. Will stay again and have already recommended to others.
Review 12:The towels catered for small figures would have been nice though extra towels would be good left in the room to cater for this problem. A towel each only
Review 13:Friendly staff
Review 14:I found it a little noicey at night it could have been the spa pump humming and on our last night there was a tour group in the room below us partying it up till 3.30am my husband had to call reception to ask them to sort the problem out which they did
Review 15:close to town which was great we just walked up, the walk around the lake is lovely, we had a nice view out of our window being on the top floor
Review 16:Party in another section if the hotel from group of Kontiki tourists. Had to ph reception at 3 in the morning only to be told we were the third complaint. Totally unacceptable - staff should have closed it down earlier. We had approx 4 hours sleep and a long drive home. We also had our 9 yr old granddaughter with us who was woken thoroughout the night .
Review 17:Friendly staff, comfortable rooms. Good food in house restaurant
Review 18:Found a pair of shoes in the room from the previous guests, under a chair. Pretty much means the room wasn't cleaned properly. On check out I paid the full bill, two rooms, dinner & breakfast. Later on in the day I spoke to one of my guests who informed be she had already paid a portion of the account. She sent her cc statement as proof. This amount was not minused off the account I paid.
Review 19:The beds were quite worn. We were moved to another room as the bed in the first room was saggy.
Review 20:Rotorua is a beautiful city. We expected the hotel to be a bit more plush based on the online photos.
Review 21:We had an unfortunate experience when booking a private spa on the night of our wedding anniversary. We went through all of the right process of booking a half-hour appointment for the private spa at the reception desk the morning before. However when it came time for our booking, there had been a back-log of people before us who had gone over their half-hour time slot, meaning that we had to.wait in the lobby for over an hour. This wasn't the problem as we can understand that this is bound to happen, but the thing that made us angry was how the manager dealt with the situation. The receptionists and bus-boys were extremely apologetic and helpful, however we found the manager to be quite rude and tried to ignore the fact that we were waiting as he tried to convince the other staff that we weren't waiting for the spa and to not worry about us. After we spoke to him, he then told the staff that we would have to miss out. It was only due to the bus-boy who went out of his way to work it out for us that we did eventually get our turn, but by then we were far beyond enjoying it. There definitely needs to be some better organisation for this and we are deeply upset by the attitude of the manager as we feel that we may have been taken more seriously if we were an older couple.
Review 22:Excellent Location, handy to city centre, museum and lake. Nice to have Use of the communal hot pool and also the option to book a private spa. The majority of the staff are helpful and friendly.
Review 23:I was very pleased with my stay. However, due to it being peak holiday period, finding close parking was competitive amongst the guests of the hotel.
Review 24:I liked how the blocks of rooms were seperate and you could enter the block where your room was without going through the main lobby , and we were also able to park our car close to where our room was.
Review 25:dirty hotel do not clean in the public areas (corridors / lift) Messy Room cobwebs on the windows dirty window 3 nights not changed even once linens dirty toilets the only one elevator in the building does not work The hotel does not correspond to the status of 4 stars maximum 2 stars this is motel!
Review 26:location
Review 27:The room was too hot and having to open the window to try to get some air the smell was not pleasent. The toilet bowl so stained that it made you look for other things l found it in that the bathroom door inside and out had dirty finger marks up and down it not nice l don't like to think this is ûould 4 star sanded. I clean for a living life
Review 28:The lovely front counter staff couldn't do enough for us.
Review 29:As above.
Review 30:My fridge didn't work. Left my daughters ice cream in the freezer compartment 2 days later it was melted like water!! Noticed it 2 hrs after we checked in told one of the staff who turned the dial halfway n said that should fix it. Had 2 bath towels to share among the 3 of us. That was a major turnoff given that my experiences with sudima Auckland airport were tremendously great. Other than that, staff at front desk esp awatere (sorry if I got it wrong) and at lakes restaurant were great. I would stay there again given location but def expecting better amenities.
Review 31:We were transferred to another room for the second night. The room was very warm and stuffy. A noisy standing fan. One light in bathroom not working..
Review 32:Helpful, friendly staff
Review 33:Friendly staff, very nice view and quite location, good parking facility, good and comfortable room. It was a very good experience. It was our first experience staying at Sudima Hotel and was a very nice one. We would love to stay again! :)
Review 34:The hotel was nice enough but the awful eggy smell from the lake spoilt our visit. The day we arrived we were in our room when the door opened, reception had allocated our room to someone else, which deactivated our key. The next day we returned to our room only to find our key had been deactivated again. Another trip back down the stairs, there is no lift to the 1st floor so if you have heavy cases or can't do stairs this isn't the place for you.my other gripe about this place, no free WiFi. We paid for 24hr it disconnected after 14hr.
Review 35:The massage advertisement My son is the masseur and it should show him instead of a blond girl. he is a very qualified masseur
Review 36:Friendly staff and everything one would need The family were very impressed
Review 37:The lamp above our beds in the standard rooms were filthy! There were insects coming out of it when I was trying to take a nap. They were coming out of the above bed lamp and jumping onto my face area. The lady who checked us in - rushed us. 2pm we were supposed to be in our rooms - was told to come back 2.30pm. 30 minutes? Doing nothing for 30 minutes because this was my family and I's first time in Rotorua so we all just wanted to go into our rooms bang on 2pm instead of waiting in the car driving around wasting petrol. The hangi show dinner was not worth the $62pp in my opinion. The food was not nice at all. The show was brilliant. The food was not. Very dirty lamps in the bed as mentioned previously. The shower would not turn its head around, you literally had to move yourself to get water. The fan in our room almost looked as if it were going to come off and cut us.
Review 38:The Hangi show was by far the best part of my stay! Also being right next to the Polynesian Spa was a bonus.
Review 39:Rubbish around the lake, decided not to walk around as not very nice looking at the debris. Also a room booked for four but only supplied cutlery/cups for two.
Review 40:staff nice and service good when asked to bring more cutlery/cups.
Review 41:A ground floor room near a drop off point for tour buses to the hotel meant was a bit noisy at times, but not overnight.
Review 42:Very friendly staff and an upgraded room was a good start to our stay. The room was very comfortable and the bathroom very clean and well appointed. A rare find were the large suitcase racks.
Review 43:The curtain in the main room needed repair and would not close. Allowed the morning light to come in. The internet charge was $10 per day and kept dropping out.. very dissatisfied. We were not the only ones to have problems
Review 44:The room was very comfortable
Review 45:Perhaps a fresher cooked brekkie eggs were a bit soggy.
Review 46:Awesome stay - Great facilities pool spa use etc. Good sized rooms and comfortable stay would deffintly go back again soon!
Review 47:Being allocated a room on the noisy side of hotel when there were rooms available on the quieter side. The hotel made a noise complaint on our behalf @ 1:30 am, unresolved two hours later. Thanks to the night manager we were then able to move to get some sleep.
Review 48:Proximity to Polynesian Pools and lake edge, delicious meal in hotel restaurant
Review 49:Disappointed that for the cost we had to pay extra for Wifi and that we had to pay daily was also rediculas this was the only hotel we stayed in on a 2week tour that Wifi was not included!
Review 50:The location was great for seeing the area very central
Review 51:We had an air conditioner in the room that went off voluntarily at odd times till we managed to fix it.
Review 52:The location the staff and amenities are all very good
Review 53:The bathrooms may need to be refurbished as noticed some places of rust around tapware etc. Also, the bedroom doors very dated however the bedroom makes up for this. First impressions are everything!
Review 54:The staff were great, greeted with smiles by everyone.
Review 55:1st impression was great at reception. I booked last minute deal on line. Went to level 2 and 1st impression was old and dingy heart dropped. Went to room which was just ok. My pillow cases were filthy then checked the sheets and the bed collapsed. Staff were great and changed us to another room which was lovely on the other side. Im not a complainer but important to know what happened to improve. The experience over all was good in the end
Review 56:Location was great.
Review 57:I can't believe that in 2015 you still have to pay for wifi in this hotel. when your travelling being able to access the Internet helps you to get the most out of an area.
Review 58:The room was a good size and clean, all the staff were very friendly and happy to help.
Review 59:Nothing - although the area we were in does not have lift so you need to carry your luggage up the stairs. We were fine with this, but were offered a porter to cary our luggage up if we wanted this.
Review 60:We booked at the last minute to attend an event at the Events Centre. We were delighted to have a very spacious room with two large beds, armchairs and a coffee table, desk, large area for luggage, double wardrobe, bath with shower. Everything was clean and well presented - art photos not he wall rather than cheap prints; proper glasses, including wine glasses, good tea, coffee (grounds and plunger) and hot chocolate, a fridge, quality toiletries. We had recently returned from England where hotels more expensive than this did not provide these amenities. Parking was available just outside the entrance to our area.
Review 61:Awesome location, within walking distance to a lot of what Rotorua has to offer. Staff were amazing, upgraded us to a room with lake front view. The sound of the nesting gulls, although rather loud, was a sight to see.
Review 62:The sulphur smell was very strong at the hotel due to being close to the lake.
Review 63:Very close proximity and the pool was wonderful and warm. Very friendly staff
Review 64:Our room, 604, had to have the most uncomfortable beds I have slept in for a long long time. The room had 2 double beds and I tried both, no support and slightest movement was felt by the other partner. The pillows also were extremely unforgettable. Why is that hotels, whose main aim is for sleeping in, get the most basic part of the package so wrong?
Review 65:The location is great, especially being close to the Polynesian Spa. The breakfast whilst OK, and no other cafes very local, was a bit overpriced at NZ$25 each.
Review 66:We were initially shown to a room that was below the standard we had anticipated. We have stayed twice before in Standard rooms and were very happy. Having upgraded to Superior we were shocked at the poor standard of the room offered. We were moved to a better room, however, it was not an upgrade on what we have had previously. We were woken up early each morning by a phone call alarm and in spite of asking reception to ensure there were no more alarms set on the phone, each morning around 06.00 am were were woken.
Review 67:The location of the hotel to the hot pools. Staff were friendly and courteous.
Review 68:It's only small but , when I asked for a glass of port at the bar, barman pour into a measuring utensil then into my glass. Now where I'm from this builds no relationship between customers and the barman.
Review 69:Staff were very nice and willing to help. Great facilities and food was beautiful. Very happy with the rooms and venue close to everything we needed.
Review 70:not getting the room we booked after specifically requesting a balcony having stayed a number of previous times. Never ending noise during the night from students. Last time we stay here.
Review 71:Location, cleanliness, staff
Review 72:The room was noisy with the buses coming & going. Breakfast eggs were yuk but staff kindly poached some for me
Review 73:It was comfortable, warm & friendly
Review 74:Paid Wi-Fi was unusable in the room from an iPhone, though OK with a laptop, and OK with the iPhone in the bar.
Review 75:Right on Lake Rotorua and close to the town centre. Small heated open swimming pool free to guests. Good breakfast buffet.
Review 76:Couldn't get wifi network in my room. Not all basic TV channels had reception in room. No sports channel in room when huge international games on.
Review 77:The restaurant evening meal was outstanding as was breakfast.
Review 78:Should have free Wi-Fi No one told me about the cultural night that is held there nightly and was not in the welcome book, so missed out
Review 79:Close to Polynesian Spa, cheap and affordable, free parking
Review 80:Lack of clear serving times for the restaurant: these need to be obvious from the time of checking in.
Review 81:Super-friendly welcome. Easy check-in. Good directions.
Review 82:Not impressed with book in staff. Rude and condescending. When asked if there was a microwave to use as I was on a strict diet, I was told no. Had to park miles away from the hotel and also had to walk up four flights of stairs. I will not be staying again.
Review 83:Room was nice.
Review 84:The showers was dirty an toilet spat water back out onto the floor
Review 85:The pool was awesome an spa I think more facilities would make this hotel a bit more interesting
Review 86:pillows were very hard we were able to find some in the cupboard that were ok to use. For a family of 4 staying in a family room we had only 3 cups provided.
Review 87:Staff very helpful and accomodating both at reception and at restaurant.
Review 88:on arrival to room bathroom wasn't cleaned properly
Review 89:found the staff very helpful ,friendly espesialy the receptionist tayla and hotel was so close to everything.
Review 90:Used the heated pool and booked once of the spas on our final night and it was brilliant! Also the size of the room was great not to mention our large outdoor area.
Review 91:Wifi was awful, basically zero reception even with the room being so close to lobby. Couldn't be fixed so no connection for our stay.
Review 92:Best thing was the beds, very comfy
Review 93:If you have any problems, just speak up. They were super responsive. Do wish the WiFi was free and a bit faster.
Review 94:Started with 4 nights, stated for 6. Great off season deals. Free private spa pools, great massage professional, restaurant dinner was excellent. Very helpful staff. perfect location in the lake, walking distance to everything. Would stay here again in a heartbeat.
Review 95:Upon leaving the non-welcoming body language, the young receptionist (Blonde) already came across with an attitude in saying we hadn't paid. When explained the scenario, still wasn't enough, which required the Duty Manager to come out, to find we were correct and was very apologetic after the fact. Was a bummer to the awesome weekend
Review 96:The Porter was very delightful and helpful as were most staff.
Review 97:I feel the pictures on the website made it seem more glamourous than it was. We were out all morning and came back late afternoon to our room being cleaned which was frustrating. The entrance to the room was more motel style than hotel style. Staff were friendly but didn't go above or beyond. I had to pry to get information instead of them offering up info to me.
Review 98:The room was a generous size the location was good. On the lake and within walking distance to the city centre.
Review 99:I had trouble finding the main door and reception! Otherwise, an excellent stay. Didn't appreciate the people smoking close to the door to the 600 wing. Not much of a view on the ground floor.
Review 100:The well renovated rooms, food in the room service, range of pillow thicknesses. Location close to the pools.
Review 101:First night we didn't sleep, as young people was yelling and singing at the hall way. The staff/management were very helpful though...
Review 102:Staffs/Management are very friendly and helpful! :-)
Review 103:The location was perfect! Enjoyed the facilities, the spa pools and the heated pool. They were both lovely and clean! The staff were well dressed and polite. The rooms were very well heated as well
Review 104:for a couple of oldies we found the short flight of steps to the lift with bags a bit difficult but overall everything was beyond our expectation
Review 105:Location and two large double beds always hot water
Review 106:I don't mind paying for WiFi but it was really annoying because the connection was inconsistent. The price was steep considering the small room we ended up with.
Review 107:Excellent location, right on the edge of Lake Rotorua. Staff where attentive and polite.
Review 108:Close to the lake and sulphur thermal springs which means It is going to smell. Just don't stay outside too long.
Review 109:Location is very convenient. Walking distance to Polynesian Spa and there is a supermarket nearby.
Review 110:I had some issues with double charging of my stay. It has taken time toget that money put back.
Review 111:The room was warm and comfortable. The dining room experience wasalso good.
Review 112:Nothing. However there was a tiny caterpillar like bug found in the cot provided by the hotel, didn't bother me though as I shook it out and we had brought our baby's bedding anyway.
Review 113:Everything! The room was a perfect size, with very comfortable beds, facilities were good too. Breakfast was our favourite with the pool & spa coming I second!
Review 114:May be best to put families with young babies together rather than next door to older couples.
Review 115:Rooms were clean, swimming pool was great, so were the spa pools.
Review 116:Enjoyed our evening meal in the restaurant. The room had a huge luggage shelf that took both our suitcases. The location is so handy to shops and attractions.
Review 117:my daughter had a broken leg and we were given a unit with wheelchair access shower and an interconnecting room. Lovely Lady staff on breakfast was really helpful for seating etc. much appreciated.
Review 118:Room was very cool, ask for portable heater but reception mentioned no more. Hairs was every where n pillow was dirty. Maintenance need to be update in this room.
Review 119:Carpark easy to access, good location.
Review 120:Wasting time waiting for assistance at reception having to walk outside in the cold to get from room to Breakfastand to the bar
Review 121:Breakfast was nice the location was good trees light up at night
Review 122:The cocktails are not part of the Happy hour! (even though the room info makes it seem that way)
Review 123:slept really well and had a view of the lake. Friendly staff.
Review 124:Restaurant staff member didn't know her menu and when we queried her suddenly we didn't receive good service, once she left it was very good so well rectified thank you
Review 125:Love the location, big comfy bed, everything we needed in the room, lovely reception staff
Review 126:Only one lift for the front block and its very slow and only accessible after climbing a flight of stairs.
Review 127:Asked for a room with a view and got the best of the lot.
Review 128:Rather tired old room and facilities . Aircon machine was useless. Some food at breakfast was overlooked and inedible.
Review 129:Good value for money Room was quiet Staff were polite and friendly
Review 130:Once again, 'held' my mastercard and said it would be charged against when we checked out on the Sunday but looking at my bank statement, it has been charged through the moment we checked in.....used different card to pay on checkout!!! what's up with that, told one thing and another thing done! Not happy
Review 131:Room location as requested, happy thank you
Review 132:Smell of the sulphur is quite overpowering when you open the balcony door first thing in the morning but that's what you expect in such a great location in Rotorua.
Review 133:Fantastic location, great cultural show, good service, wonderful breakfast
Review 134:Room very hot. Had to open window to stay comfortable however then very noisy outside. Would be good to be able to control room temp.
Review 135:Service and staff. Good price for accommodation!
Review 136:Extremely bad connection of wifi in the room disaster at the balcony little bit better and even on reception was not working properly... And it costs 10 NZD per day... Hope they will fix it as hotel is well aware of this problem
Review 137:As for such a big hotel it comes as a bit of disappointment that you need to pay for a WiFi connection...
Review 138:I think the location of this hotel is its greatest advantage. The rooms are clean and of a good standard (they could get better pillows though)
The Fine Print
Unlimited Wi-Fi is available in the entire hotel and costs NZD 10.
