Reviews for Palace Grand Hotel Varese

Review 1:The restaurant menu was slightly limited in choice - however the food was amazing.

Review 2:An excellent hotel with very friendly and helpful staff. The rooms were clean and well maintained by the staff, The hotel is located a short walk from the centre of Varese and offers information for those who wish to venture further afield.

Review 3:A really charming hotel. Stately and like going back in time. Clearly built originally as an hotel, high ceilings, large rooms and expansive communal areas. Staff are lovely, restaurant good, breakfast excellent. We will be going again!

Review 4:Poor quality of room... Requires urgent refurbishement!!! Smell of the cigarette smoke in corridor which inevitably contaminated room air

Review 5:Restaurant staff, very professional

Review 6:Nothing bad worth writing about.

Review 7:A wonderful historic building with fantastic views. Close to town yet far enough away for peace and quiet. Would stay again.

Review 8:Everything is very nice, but the staff could be a little nicer. Don't get me wrong, they were great, but just a little stern.

Review 9:One of the best old hotels with absolutely amazing location and grounds. Comfortable beds, huge bathrooms, decent internet. If you want old world charm along with significant architectural history, this is the place.

Review 10:- air conditioned very noisy, hat to switch it off to be able to fall asleep. (room temperature was above 30°C (86°F) - door of the room provided no acoustic isolation from the noise in the corridor. People was coming and going all night long!

Review 11:- magnificent view of the surrounding, including alps and the lake of Varese - liberty style interiors, imposant common rooms.

Review 12:Wouldn't say a bad experience but not a big menu to choose from. We stayed for 3 nights and menu offered only the same 3 choices for each night

Review 13:Wait staff friendly and obliging Good size rooms

Review 14:Trage WIFI. Door de ligging aangewezen op faciliteiten hotel.

Review 15:Ruime kamer (met matige geluidsisolatie) en aparte bedden. De charme van de oude glorie van weleer. Goed als doorgangshotel. Ruime parkeergelegenheid. Restaurant met wat oubollige keuken.

Review 16:its really a great trip, I love here. Its really beautiful here. The renting-free bicycle is good, you can explore the whole small city with your bicycle.

Review 17:Few English channels, small shower but large bathtub did have shower but too high to climb in and out

Review 18:Beautiful views from 2 balconies, the feel of old world elegance, 2 room suite with large bathroom, helpful staff, large led tv

Review 19:Only one small elevator, old bed, but these are not so important problems. A little renovation would be nice and if a big renovation would be possible... Than it would become an amazing real palace but... Only Quatar could afford it probably ;-)

Review 20:Close from Lugano, nice price, nice breakfast, nice park

Review 21:Thirs time at this hotel but this time the yogurt at the breakfast was out of date (about than 10 days), and the pears were old (did not smell good).

Review 22:Nice parking, good location, big rooms but a bit old.

Review 23:Unfortunately we were traveling in January and therefore the hotel was quiet. Cant wait until we return in August and see it in all its splendor. This is a hotel that needs to be full of guests and then the atmosphere will be perfect.

Review 24:Everything!! We had traveled for 500 miles and needed to relax, how lucky were we that we had chosen this hotel. First stay but definitely not the last. We love Italy, Italian food and the way of life, this hotel did not let us down.

Review 25:Single bed too narrow for a really good night's rest will ask for a wider bed next time.

Review 26:Waking up each morning with a magnificent view of Lago di Varese with the Alps as a distant background.

Review 27:It's not easy to get into town. The wifi is fast but constant need for password was annoying.

Review 28:Lives up its 'grand' name! Beautiful grounds and spectacular views. Staff friendly, dinner was excellent.

Review 29:Restaurant was expensive and obviously set up for tour groups who got prepaid meals. Unfortunately you are a captured audience for meals unless you have a car or want to pay for a taxi.

Review 30:Good spot if you are flying out of Milpensa--40 minutes away. Very quiet. Lovely views, but not within walking distance of Varese.

Review 31:Breakfast a little slapdash

Review 32:Large renovated room overlooking garden and lake. Good service at the reception, evening dining and bar. Free transport to and from the Varese train station.

Review 33:The bathroom space was incredibly poorly used. The shower was very small although there was an obvious way to enlarge it at very minimal cost. The WC was situated very poorly in a corner with a wall directly in front and very close. Simply turning it through 90 degrees would have made it much more convenient especially for the elderly and those with some disability.

Review 34:Spacious.

Review 35:away from the center, no problem with car.

Review 36:very beautiful, romantic old luxury hotel, view from balcony, big room, comfortal beds, luxury badroom, proffesional stuff.

Review 37:The food in the restaurant was a bit pricey although not really out of step with the restaurants in the town. Otherwise, no complaints whatsoever.

Review 38:Excellent location, huge bedroom, large clean bathroom, wonderfully helpful staff. The grounds are spacious with a small pool, sunbathing area and tennis court. The Wifi is free for 30 minutes in the lobby but you can have as many 30 minute sessions as you like. The breakfast is excellent with cereals, fruit juices, fruit, cheeses, hams, bacon and scrambled eggs, bread, jam and cakes, etc. the coffee is from a machine but the very helpful waiter will make you a fresh cup of you choice on request. We paid €65 a night which is stupendous value!

Review 39:The view The doors of my room opening out to the view of the lake The friendly staff ( Domenico and Allesandra ) and amazing views from the restaurant for breakfast and dinner

Review 40:Nothing!

Review 41:A fascinating place to stay - you really feel as though you are going back into another era, and well worth staying there if you are passing through. The location is great, and breakfast overlooking the lake and with the mountains in the distance is wonderful!

Review 42:We booked a triple room for my sons. When we arrived they were given a double room. The man on the reception was appalling. He said that a triple room is a double with a put up bed. We told him that a triple room has 3 beds and that there was a picture on the hotel's website if he wanted to look. Eventually, he made a call and we were offered a choice of 2 triple rooms. This created a bad initial impression. I cannot understand how one individual could let down the hotel down so badly.

Review 43:Location ideal for exploring the Italian lakes by car. A period style hotel which has seen better days but remains pleasant.

Review 44:I had noisy neighbours waking me at 1 am- 2 am most mornings. One of the Directors was rude to me and unwilling to help me with exchanging some currency despite a call from a local bank asking for help. He did change a small amount of money for me (at a very poor rate) but was obviously not happy about it. This made me feel very uncomfortable when he was on reception and I only had him to deal with. There is an extremely long, uphill driveway and you really need to be very fit to climb it. This put me off venturing out more than once a day. Wi fi system of only being available for 30 minutes at a time and only in the lobby (unless you paid) was a pain!

Review 45:Hotel was charming, clean, old-fashioned and grandious. Breakfast was great. Value for money, very comfortable room.

Review 46:This hotel does not have internet access to the rooms unless you purchase it or you can go to lobby for a free half an hour internet. No hot water on our check out morning. Housekeepers don't check levels of bathroom essentials.

Review 47:There were lovely views from the hotel.

Review 48:There were some cobwebs 12 feet up in the corners of the ceiling. Our room didn't have aircon although the website stated it did, but in fact it was not needed at all as the room was very well insulated and ventilated. The free lobby wifi connection was terribly slow and unreliable.

Review 49:This once-grand hotel is now a bit faded and tired, but has bags more character than any modern hotel in this price range. The high ceilings, big windows, imposing location on the top of a hill, big bathrooms and the old style decorations make this a pleasant and unique place to stay.

Review 50:Wifi free in the lobby but not in the rooms.

Review 51:Elegant old hotel located on a hill some 15 minutes walking distance from Varese centre. We asked for a room with a view and received a beautiful corner room with a fantastic view over the lake on one side and towards the town on the other. We had a great stay.

Review 52:No complaints

Review 53:A little bit of history within the Palace. Location very convenient with a car. Views from the room fantastic. Breakfast area very impressive with good selections to start the day.

Review 54:There is an extremely long uphill driveway, probably one km long if not more, extremely difficult to walk more than once per day. I am fit, anyone less fit or disabled in anyway would not manage it Some staff members at reception were abrupt and unhelpful, one in particular, a Direttore, who was quite rude to me when I asked for some money to be exchanged after the bank had phoned him to.inform him how much difficulty I was having changing money

Review 55:Hotel was beautiful, charming and quaint in a very grand way. Spacious with wonderful views and a great breakfast.

Review 56:I would have liked to know to whom I was speaking at reception, name tags could be helpful. I had failed to notice this was a dog friendly hotel hence the surprise of having to share the breakfast room them! Breakfast was uninspiring and of mediocre quality. Fresh bread (not cheap ready sliced in a poly bag), rolls, fresh fruit and juice don't cost that much.

Review 57:Beautiful room with lovely view of the lake. The room was very clean, a good size and with a comfortable bed with quality linen. The way the yapping dogs in the next room were dealt with promptly by staff

Review 58:Rooms were a bit dated. The menu was very poor don't eat here is my advice

Review 59:The best scenic view of the area one could ever expect. Great job on an updated bathroom!!

Review 60:I dont like paying for wifi

Review 61:Hotel was excellent location, free shuttle to town very good, airport shuttle service, good food and breakfast.a grand old hotel which retains its charm and charisma spendidly, staff weer excellent

Review 62:Awful shower...

Review 63:Amazing view!

Review 64:Very friendly and efficient staff, stunning views from large bedroom, good breakfast.warm feeling from this grand old lady.

Review 65:Stylish hotel; glamorous building.

Review 66:Very limited dinner menu and never change during our stay

Review 67:Free parking and fantastic views

Review 68:Food standard service Decor tired

Review 69:Location views room size

Review 70:Breakfast and supper -at low level and low quality. I advice to change the kitchen staff/

Review 71:Good location, very clean, comfortable

Review 72:The old beauty crumbling down. Lukewarm service. Breakfast is horrible.

Review 73:Beautiful art nouveau building.

Review 74:The shower sprayed in all directions including the ceiling.

Review 75:The location was on a hill with a nice view of the lake.

Review 76:Insufficient attention to detail when cleaning, the breakfast offering

Review 77:High Comfort, Quiet, the Large bedroom, the Location, Dinner, and the view.

Review 78:poor wi-fi connection

Review 79:comfortable ' tab at the bath veiw from the window

Review 80:Great breakfast, large room, friendly staff, in parkland but still just off a main road, near the centre of Varese

Review 81:Very clean

Review 82:The atmosphere of the Hotel is unique and romantical. NIce view from the balcony.

Review 83:Breakfast doesn't worth 4 stars

Review 84:amazing view in an historical building

Review 85:Food pricey,

Review 86:Nice rooms and beautiful views

Review 87:Nice location with 15/20 min.walking distance to to the old town and shopping area. Good breakfast !

Review 88:All old and tired, except for bathrooms

Review 89:Grand Palace style and location. Wifi. Size of bedroom

Review 90:Bed too hard

Review 91:Just a wonderful hotel

Review 92:Bathroom floor was filthy, coffe at breakfast is horrible

Review 93:Lovely view of the lake from my room, helpful staff, nice location

Review 94:not convenient location

Review 95:charming, old-world style hotel complete with heavy keys you must leave at the front desk great views wonderful staff

Review 96:Poor room sound insulation

Review 97:Nice staff

Review 98:Location,long winding journey to the hotel, beds

Review 99:Views

Review 100:The ala carte dish, all that was offered, was terribly over priced; seemed setup gor tour groups

Review 101:The park surrounding

Review 102:a liitle too far to walk into town

Review 103:beautiful grounds, swimming pool and ample parking. Rooms are quite big and the bathroom well stocked.

Review 104:Getting a bit run down, needs a bit of love.

Review 105:Beautiful old hotel with loads of charm

Review 106:The coffee at breakfast - now from a machine and the espresso is awful!

Review 107:I've stayed here many times and thoroughly recommend. Its a great location: Varese is within easy reach of both Milan and the Lakes, and the hotel is in a great position in the town. If you like the anonymity of a large hotel, with very professional staff and good size rooms, and a great price, then this is ideal. Fantastic breakfast too.

Review 108:Food was basic, chips with everything and not mentioned on the menu. Not typical Italian food! Poor service especially breakfast, no staff around to replenish low stock.

Review 109:Location, rooms. Hotel a bit jaded but with a bit of thought could be fantastic.

Review 110:Only one lift for over 100 rooms, and sadly at breakfast the worstcoffee I have ever drunk in Italy (or anywhere else for that matter)

Review 111:A fantastic building albeit a bit past its best, wonderful views overthe town and mountains beyond. Large rooms and modern bathroom. Greatbar with outside area and with a very helpful member of staff (thanksMarco). Hopefully will stay again and the sun will shine!!!

Review 112:Not the hotel's fault but gps fix is not accurate and led me into asituation where I damaged my hire car. Best check a map too!

Review 113:Everything - the beautiful site, spacious feel inside too. The helpful, warm staff, extra special mention for Manolo and the barmen/waiters.Even the hotel cat welcomes you in the car park.

Review 114:There are just not enough staff. I waited in the bar for 15 minutes and no-one turned up and had to ask at reception for a barman. Also the food is awful. Do not eat in the restaurant - go elsewhere.

Review 115:We like the anonymity of the hotel - you are left alone - we were only there one night passing through. Its a grand place but needs a lot of work to bring it up to an acceptable standard

Review 116:A beautiful charming hotel with amazing views of the lake and stunning accommodation with marble and old world elegance. The staff were superb and ever helpful seeing to every need. Nothing was too much!

Review 117:The restaurant has a poor menu and is not very good. The limited internet connection.

Review 118:The hotel is located in a very nice park on top of a hill. We enjoyed the possibility of having our dog, a french bulldog, with us.

Review 119:The breakfast - apart from the fresh fruit salad - was not good. The coffee from the self service machine was lukewarm and tasteless. I asked waitress for a 'nice hot cup of coffee' and got another tasteless lukewarm one.

Review 120:The Hotel is over 100 years old and although it has seen better days there is an olde world charm about the place, with its lovely original Art Nouveau lights, bedroom furniture and dining room chairs. The Hotel stands on the top of a hill in its own grounds, 'far away from the maddening crowds', it is very quiet and restful. The view is wonderful looking over the town and surrounding countryside

Review 121:We asked to be moved from the first room allocated to us as it did not have a bath (which we'd asked for) & the toilet cistern was constantly flushing. The member of staff who came to show us another room was rude & did not offer to help move luggage. The dinner menu was very limited, the food was poor & the waiters indifferent & inefficient. Breakfast was poor, the worst we had in 20 days away, & only wrapped items items were topped up. Location of hotel on a hill did not lend itself to eating out.

Review 122:Our room, when we got there, & bathroom were excellent & very comfortable. Plenty of parking & good views from restaurant. Free Wifi & use of computer in lobby.

Review 123:This is a grand old hotel. We had a large bedroom and bathroom with a beautiful view of the lake. Breakfast was great. The staff were charming and provided us with special off menu dinner each night. The food was delightful.

Review 124:We were disappointed to find the Dinner menu did not change all week. With three or four of the same choices for each course in this class of hotel I feel there should be a greater choice.

Review 125:Excellent building and facilities generally.

Review 126:A bit removed from center city. Cab fares to various locations were expensive.

Review 127:Beautiful old building. Lovely location. Nice large rooms. Good breakfast.

Review 128:Old a/c, noisy and low performance. The plastic, samll pool is only for kids. Breakfast needs improvement and more quality.

Review 129:Situated in a hill, near city center, overlooking Varese and its lake. Stunning view. Spacious room and bathroom. Easy private parking.

Review 130:The food other than breakfast was very expensive so we did not eat in the hotel.

Review 131:The room was comfortable and the location of the hotel was picturesque. The breakfast was good (buffet style) though not with the biggest choice. Swimming pool was not very big but adequate as not many people were using it. At the pre-booked rate we were offered it was good value. Spectacular stairwell!

Review 132:The restaurant lets the hotel down. A lovely dining room and very good service, but the food is disappointing and the bread is dreadful, part baked vaccum pack type. Same again at breakfast where everything else was good, especially fresh fruit salad.

Review 133:This hotel is splendid, glamorous in the old style. A little shabby in places but full of charm. It is set in it's own country park. Our room was large with a view lake view from it's small balcony. The bathroom also large, all mirrors and marble. We loved it and will be back again later this year. The staff are efficient and helpful.

Review 134:- I like vintage hotels, but this is not vintage, it is just old and badly maintained. The rooms are not comfortable.- Breakfast is very poor and low quality - Staff is neither friendly nor very helpful - Quite expensive for what they offer. - A 4 stars hotel that charges for wireless (???)

Review 135:This an excellent hotel and it's location has to be visited to be appreciated. In some parts the age of the hotel are starting to show but the rooms are in excellent order and the views more than make up for any shortcomings.
