Reviews for The River House Hotel

Review 1:The hotel was clean, comfortable and was right on the Mekong overlooking Laos. I was getting the 2 day Nagi boat to Luang Prabang and saw a wonderful sunrise whilst having breakfast before being picked up by Nagi. The town is small but there are plenty of places nearby to eat.

Review 2:Unfortunately with the opening of the Friendship bridge, Chiang Khong is losing it's relevance as a stopover before crossing into Laos. The quality of accommodation in Chiang Khong is a step above that available in Huay Xai and this hotel is one of the better options. I stayed here around the same time last year and standards have fallen slightly but I was still satisfied and would stay again.

Review 3:Comfortable bed. Great view of the river. Close to some good riverside restaurants. Staff friendly and helpful.

Review 4:I felt a bit insecure because of the poor locker mechanism to close the door... it could be opened easily from the outside... Although it has nice views, it's a bit far from the city centre. One nescafé stick was broken and full of ants.

Review 5:It's a hotel with nice views overlooking the Mekong, with some restaurants nearby. Although there are some spiders and ants in the room, it is quite clean and comfortable. As I said, it's a good option to stay overnight to cross the border to Laos the next morning. And there's also a service for the transport to the friendship bridge (Laos border) for a good price.

Review 6:Like most travellers our stopover here was on the way to Laos , so just one night . The river house was clean , comfortable and the rooms with balcony had great views . It was very pleasant sitting on the balcony with a drink . Check in was smooth , staff were friendly, and there were plenty of restaurants within walking distance . The breakfast was ok, not great, but at least enough to get you going .

Review 7:Creative touches at the guesthouse, friendly service and eating suggestions from the staff.

Review 8:Clean and basic, good for a one night before a hop over to Laos

Review 9:Comfortable room

Review 10:Everything was adequate.

Review 11:uncomfortable staff

Review 12:cleanliness, location

Review 13:Good for one night before crossing the border

Review 14:Breakfast only starts at 7.15 when most people head to the border at7.30?

Review 15:Good location, close to where buses drop you off.very convenient for the short journey to the Laos border. Nice staff.

Review 16:Only Minor pain when our 'please clean room' sign was missed so we had to ask for towels etc

Review 17:Budget hotel but fair value for money. Lovely riverside location, free daily drinking water, complementary instant coffee and tea at reception in the mornings, breakfast and real coffee to purchase if you wish it, lovely Receptionist, tuk tuk to Friendship Bridge arranged for us.

Review 18:A long the Golden triangle loop, we got much better accommodation with same cost.

Review 19:We were doing the golden triangle loop. We stay here for 1 night. In fact there is nothing much to see in the evenings. We recommend travelers to stay in Chiang Rai and visit Chiang Khong area during the daytime. The hotel is next to the Police station. Good river viewing. Large parking space available.

Review 20:The beds were a little hard but this tends to be a trend Asia. Not as hard as Chinese beds but a little padding would be nice!

Review 21:Beautiful setting on the Mekong river in a sleepy but lovely little town. Most people skip this town for the boat to Laos but we decided to stay an explore the roads from Mae Sai to Thoeng. The hotel arranged motorbikes for us and we went on day rides through the mountains to hill towns, tea plantations and waterfalls. No tourists to be seen except at the Golden triangle but beautiful landscapes and friendly people. After a long day, it was nice to come back and sit on the deck overlooking the Mekong, watch the river flow by and drink a cold beer. The hotel was very peaceful, modern and clean. The staff were super helpful and went out of their way to make sure we had a great stay!

Review 22:The mattress was too hard for me but that is a personal preference.

Review 23:Nice location right by the river. The staff was helpful and friendly. Quiet location.

Review 24:Like most modern travellers we had phones etc to charge and the paucity of sockets wasn't helpful

Review 25:It was perfect for a one night stop off before the two day boat cruise to Luang Prabang

Review 26:The bed was the hardest of our trip. Not very confortable. The wifi did not work in the room.

Review 27:The hotel has a very good view of the river. You dont need a room with view, just buy a beer and sit on the restaurant. The location is convenient, we went walking from the bus station and there are some restaurants nearby. The room is basic and clean.

Review 28:WiFi is not very good in the room. The room is small. We stayed on the ground floor, so no nice view. No breakfast available which we didn't mind initially but it took us quite some time to find something to eat the next morning, luckily we found the Bamboo Mexican House which provided us with an amazing! breakfast (home-made wholegrain bread).

Review 29:Friendly receptionist.

Review 30:The Hotel was ok maybe a little overpriced for where it was , but the lady on reception has very good English & v helpful , you can buy boxed cereals for breakfast ect , peaceful location along The Mighty Meekong

Review 31:Hot water was a problem. If you run very little volume of flow, seems to work somewhat. Otherwise room was good value.

Review 32:Good location on river near blocks from center of town and night market. Very helpful staff.

Review 33:The bed was as hard as if I had been sleeping on the floor and the water in the shower never heated up.

Review 34:The location is good. We were spending the night before crossing the border into Laos. It was fairly easy to get a ride to the new border crossing. The location is mostly very good for the previous border crossing that one did on a long boat. One definitely needs a ride from the hotel to the new crossing at the bridge. The staff was friendly enough though most did not speak English and we unfortunately don't speak Thai. The hotel, as its name indicates, is right on the river, so the morning view from the breakfast terrace is quite remarkable.

Review 35:Not exactly what we have expected! It hast lost the value since tourists are no longer forced t stay in this town due to the new bridge!

Review 36:Not that much to mention! In the past it was probably more interesting to stay here since it is directly opposite of Huay Xai of Laos and in the past linked with a ferry. Since a few weeks is Laos at this place from Thailand reachable by a brand-new bridge over the Mekong River!

Review 37:The bed is very very hard. Water in shower room wasn't hot. No heater in the room.

Review 38:Location, right next to Khong river and about 5 minutes walk to bus station. Room size and amenities in good. Free 2 drinking water bottles.

Review 39:There was a need for more maintenance and attention to detail. The promised coffee was not available. The bathroom had a number of things that didn't work quite right. They sent me off in the dark in a cold rain to find a place to eat, but almost nothing was open. The staff seemed not to see a problem with the idea that the immigration pickup was at 7:30, while breakfast started at 7:15. It turned out not to be a problem, but when I asked initially about starting a little earlier, they seemed surprised at the idea. I think they must have many customers during the tourist season with the same concern.

Review 40:In better weather, the location would have been scenic. The room was OK, but nothing special. The staff arranged a good-price dropoff at the new (and more distant) immigration station. The staff members were quite pleasant.

Review 41:Staff were very friendly and very helpful (and they spoke English). This was a great place to spend a night before taking the slow boat to Luang Prabang the next day. Most of the guests that I met were Thai.

Review 42:A bit pricey for Thailand but it gives you a bit of comfort before along and tiring two days on a slow boat. There were a couple of weirdworm things in the shower and the sink tap was leaking.

Review 43:Lovely aircon room with a big comfortable bed. Only ten minutes fromimmigration if you are stopping over on your way to Laos. Thereceptionist was extremely helpful, spoke perfect English and was fullof information. Gorgeous view of the Mekong river.

Review 44:even the bell didnt locate the male staff member half the time! He was either in his room or unavailable!

Review 45:close to bus terminal, room ok, staff can book a tuk tuk to border for 60 baht

Review 46:mattress far too hard - we like a firm mattress but we awoke with sore limbs. Change the mattresses!

Review 47:great value for money, even though small room. good position overlooking the river with spacious balcony.

Review 48:Nothing.

Review 49:We got upgraded by the staff for free to an AC twin room from a fan room since they weren't fully booked. The location is perfect and is a 10 minute walk from where the bus from Chiang Rai drops you off. Pretty sure this is the closest of any. It's situated right on the river which provides a nice setting. It's about 10 minutes walk from most of the restaurants but this shouldn't bother you if you are staying here briefly before crossing the border.

Review 50:tiny bathroom. no available power outlets. I had to unplug the fan to recharge.

Review 51:Nice place with a good view of the river on the south end of town. A few minutes walk from main road. Room was smallish, but attractive and comfortable. Staff was exceedingly friendly and helpful. Internet worked in the room.

Review 52:If you manage to cross the border, take a tuk tuk, it is kind of farfrom the hotel.

Review 53:The Hotel is very well located, along the mekong, the sunrise isbreathtaking !

Review 54:Uunfortunately no one was up to serve us breakfast at 7.20 eventhoughthey started at 7.00. There was a lack of hot water.

Review 61:Nothing

Review 62:Lovely staff. Nice clean comfortable room after a long bus journey

Review 63:Stunning location and great value!

Review 64:Nothing really. Be warned: rooms with Mekong view are popular.

Review 65:Very helpfull staff. The perfect place for booking a trip down the Mekong the easy way.

Review 77:- The handle of the shower head in our room is broken.

Review 78:- The location is really awesome. - The staff is friendly and helpful.

Review 79:shared bath rooms where not cleaned during my 2 day stay. lots of noise coming from the other side river.

Review 82:Location, clean

Review 83:rooms a bit small

Review 84:nice decorated rooms. friendly staff. good location

Review 85:There were dirty curtains and they have chanced my room

Review 86:The bed was the hardest I've ever come across, I think concrete would be more comfortable.
