Reviews for The Powderhorn Chateau
Review 1:Lack microwave in rooms, couldn't find toothpaste with toiletries
Review 2:The ambience it provides throughout the facility is exceptional. The bar and restaurant is an added advantage. All the servings are nice. Maintaining good cleanliness.
Review 3:that was terribly noisy stay. If you like to sleep, don't stay here, there was noise everywhere. We've left to other hotel for second night even it was paid here.
Review 4:Near the beautiful Tongariro park. Girl on reception was very nice and friendly.
Review 5:It would be good to know in advance if the place is one or two storey and if the bathroom is on the same level as the bedrooms. My mother is disabled and couldn't manage the steps. She found the shower over the bath a challenge.
Review 6:The staff were really helpful when our first option wasn't suitable & put us in another house that was closer to the main hotel for the same price. Beds were so comfortable, lots of room & nice shower.
Review 7:The milk was frozen solid in the room fridge. Only choice of tea/coffee was organic. Only one power point to use for recharging phones and iPads and as there were 2 of us that was 4 appliances. Also its a very dark place, with low lighting everywhere.
Review 8:The swimming pool
Review 9:The team at The Powderhorn Chateau made our visit truly memorable. The hot pool was the ultimate luxury after a long tramp and the food in the hotel restaurant was faultless. The 'Ohakune Special' is a must have if visiting the bar and a new favorite of mine. The whole experience was magical and we would go back in a flash!
Review 10:Nothing we did not like
Review 11:Friendly welcome and quick check in. Good first impression. Highly recommend going to the Powerkeg for a drink and meal. I think this is the best hotel we have stayed in, whilst in NZ in the past 4 years, its comfortable really nice, got a great indoor swimming pool. Also the food in the restaurant is really great we had dinner and breakfast. We would definitely stay here again and recommend it to family and friends. Staff are warm and friendly.
Review 12:Nothing
Review 13:Very friendly staff. Very nice wood panelled bar and restaurant. The food was good, and like most of NZ in our experience, nothing special. The location is attractive. The young woman in the Bar is nice and can be very amusing. Pleasant bedrooms.
Review 14:The facility is superb loved everything. The room awesome, staff so helpful and pleasant. The staff couldn't do enough to make it a special trip for my husband and I. The swimming pool, couldn't get enough very kool.

Review 16:This was the best experience I've had in a hotel in new Zealand, the rooms are great, the swimming pool is perfect and the food in the bar next door is great. I would definitely go back again.
Review 17:Leather Seating needs re-stuffing, as My Elderly Father had a difficult time getting out of his.
Review 18:OHAKUNE'S BEST KEPT LUXURY RETREAT: Wonderful Location as on a Train Journey for My Mum's 80th Birthday. Staff were ever so Friendly & Accommodating. What a Truly Fabulous Place with Wonderful Food .... such Generous Portions .... and as for the Luxurious Rooms / Balcony & Bathrooms 10 out of 10 !! THANK YOU POWDERHORN CHATEAU ... DEFINITELY RECOMMEND TO ALL !!
Review 19:The shower door didn't close properly which meant things for quite wet.
Review 20:Having the restaurant in the chateau was a bonus. The verandahs off the room were lovely and sunny too.
Review 21:The only downside to the property location is when the trains run past every few hours so just bring earplugs
Review 22:Beautiful place to stay for a treat, although its a bit more money per night than most accomm in Ohakune the service from staff is welcoming and attentive, the indoor pool is perfect after a day on the slopes and the rooms are lovely!
Review 23:The receptionist was extremely friendly on arrival, granted all our requests. We were looking forward to soaking in their hot pool after a day skiing so she organised mulled wine to be delivered so we could enjoy it while soaking in the pool!!
Review 24:This lodge really is that – it had a great feel and as I was travelling alone I was sorry not to be able to share it with my family. The indoor heated pool was a nice surprise too.
Review 25:The free mulled wine to get us into the restaurant. Wine syrup is just plain awful. .
Review 26:The location was great and the building has atmosphere although a little dark.
Review 27:The sound of the TV from the room next door
Review 28:It was really an indulgence for me to pay that much but I loved every minute of it. I like that you are working so hard to be eco-friendly. The hot pool is a drawcard for me. Great decor.
Review 29:Noise wasn't really an issue, otherthan when kids were running up and down the hallway - which isn't the hotel's fault
Review 30:Beauty of an old building with good food in the bar downstairs.
Review 31:Rooms are a little noisy, hearing neighbour's toilet flush and shower.
Review 32:The warm "Lockwood" look (or is it Lockwood??). Most pleasant helpful staff, meals to die for. And a lift for bad knees and sore feet!
Review 33:The ambience, accommodation, location and complimentary mulled wine! We only had one night en route home to Auckland, would have liked longer. This is a little expensive but it was school holidays and the start of the ski season.
Review 34:The overall stay was lovely to experience. The whole place was clean and cosy. Staff were cheerful and helpful. We will be more than happy to stay if passing through that way again. We will definately recommend to friends and family to stay at the Powderhorn Chateau.
Review 35:There are ants crawling about our room when we left fruits on the table. The hotel was near to the railway which provides convenience as we took the train to reach Ohakune, but the noise of several passing trains at night can be a bit disturbing.
Review 36:The restaurant serves good food which is also value for money. The hotel staff was especially thoughtful by catering to our very needs - be it the room or the breakfast arrangement.
Review 37:The style of building meant no sound proofing. Conversations and plumbing noises abounded through the walls throughout the night. Ok if there to party.
Review 38:Convenient location. Great bath and generous room size. Good view. Great meals.
Review 39:It was a bit out of the way, you couldn't really walk to any of the restaurants in the town so unless you're driving you are quite limited to the restaurant/bar at the hotel - which is pretty good, just really quiet.
Review 40:Bed was comfy and the room was a decent size. The staff were nice as well, and the food in the restaurant was pretty good.
Review 41:their indoor pool was great, just be careful… the tile on the pool stairs is VERY slippery..
Review 42:Beautiful hotel, a little worn, but spotless and comfy and because we were there during summer, we are able to be off and away from the tourists in Whakapapa Village, but we had access to all the same things to do in the area. Staff was helpful and knowledgeable. The food in their restaurant was excellent and we were pleased with our stay would gladly go back!
Review 43:The swimming pool area is dark and could do with upgrading.
Review 44:Cosy feel of the bedroom and having a good restaurant on site. Staff were friendly and approachable.
Review 45:Unfortunately we had ants in our room. The reception was very apologetic and provided a free breakfast for us. Hope they get them under control because if would be a shame to ruin a fabulous establishment!
Review 46:Great atmosphere, comfortable beds, well equipped rooms and beautiful hot pool!!
Review 47:We did wake up when our next door room mate had a bath late at night and very early in the morning.! This only happened on our last night.
Review 48:A great bath, bathroom, excellent towels . friendly staff . We liked that we had lots of storage room. We ate in the dinning room for the 3 nights of our stay. Meals good value and great service.
Review 49:- Very limited choice for breakfast (which was included), had to choose from a few items from the standard menu every morning. Portions huge though. - Be aware that there will be noise from TV and people in the rooms next to yours, this was recognised by the hotel in their welcome letter/rules and the request was made to consider the other guests. However, some noise cannot be helped and that was a bit of a nuisance.
Review 50:- The bar/restaurant had a lovely après-ski feel and was a great place to hang out after a day on the slopes. - Food was excellent throughout, except disappointingly on the last night one of the steaks had to be sent back twice. - Very relaxed feel around the place. - Ski rental right next to the hotel, with 20% discount, was very handy.
Review 51:The food and beverage is prity bad. Get a room on the top floor as the timber floor boards squeak. The coffee need improvement
Review 52:Drinks on the deck in the sun after a full day skiing
Review 53:Loud banging from people running around in the mansion room , just cause they are richer doesn't mean they shouldn't show respect for others staying there
Review 54:Drinking in the heated pool and the rooms ✌️
Review 55:I wasnt aware that my 3 year old wasnt allowed in the indoor pool, no under 5s. The pool was a big reason why we chose The Powderhorn. Food very average and no healthy options for a late lunch. Service was a bit slow in the restaurant, maybe they were just a bit short staffed that day?
Review 56:Friendly, helpfull staff, beautiful building, Warm & comforting!
Review 57:The noise was terrible, no sound proofing at all, or very little. We had no respite while in our room from the noise above and below. We could hear conversations and bathroom actions as clear as a bell. Kids very noisy with their excited voices, kids will be kids thou. The lovely staff are aware of the problem and say that's what you get with a wooden building. Still, I think it was not acceptable and they need to spend some money on the problem. I believe they offer ear plugs, that just about sums it up.
Review 58:Had every thing you would want, pool, bar, restaurants and nice service. Great location for going up to the mountain and more eating establishments close by. Food very nice and good portions.
Review 59:price is a bit steep especially for off season
Review 60:We loved it and we will be back
Review 61:Loud music in the bar and on balcony. Poor menu
Review 62:Location
Review 63:N/A
Review 64:The staff were outstanding! Very helpful & accomendating.
Review 65:Floors above creaked
Review 66:Cleanliness
Review 67:I didn't like that I only stay there one night!
Review 68:Everything, the facilities, the staff, the warmth of service.
Review 69:The staff went over & above for us. Wonderful service !! We were blown away !!!
Review 70:Nothing too bad, hallways a little plain and run down
Review 71:Lovely comfy bed, great relaxing weekend away.
Review 72:Handy to ski field. Great food and service
Review 73:Did not get the room with balcony that we had booked. Why not? Main dining room closed midweek.
Review 74:Nice room, great dinner, good warm pool
Review 75:Lovely room, great size and very comforting.
Review 76:The staff in the Mattahorn Bar and Restaurant were exceptional
Review 77:TV channels dropped out for a while, soap not renewed from housekeeping.
Review 78:Friendly staff, comfortable room, great location
Review 79:The staff are friendly and professional. The food is superb. The room was warm. The drying room was excellent.
Review 80:Stuffy and claustrophobic. Selected this hotel for the onsite restaurant but it was closed so we had to sit at the bar
Review 81:The bar.
Review 82:Food not that great
Review 83:Friendly helpfull staff, comfortable clean room, great heated pool.
Review 84:A bit expensive for the type of accomodation
Review 85:Friendly staff and good meals
Review 86:The freezing wind blew through the closed windows and the heat pump, despite being on full, did not heat the room.
Review 87:The staff were courteous.
Review 88:Warm and quiet
Review 89:Restaurant was closed for breakfast.
Review 90:Location was good, great restaurant and staff. After a day tramping the heated pool was wonderful.
Review 91:Noisy plumbing throughout. Staff generally unhappy miserable.
Review 92:Restaurant food
Review 93:Very helpful staff and huuuge deep bath for those aching legs!
Review 94:Breakfast average and expensive. Asked for an omelette and advised we don't do omelettes. Its breakfast ??
Review 95:Good location with helpful staff.
Review 96:Friendly staff, great hotel
Review 97:We stayed on a Sunday night and there wasn't many people around, so I felt that $220 was a bit expensive compared to what you might get for that money in one of the main centres (which should theoretically be more expensive). Basically I left with the feeling that we had paid too much.
Review 98:A nice place to stay, always enjoy the indoor hot pool, and the Powderkeg, food etc.
Review 99:Found the premises were not user friendly - parking not handy - a long way to lump your bag. Room while very comfortable was also very dark and gloomy.
Review 100:The hallways are a bit scary between the smell of laquer on the wood and the very very dim lighting. Our eyes are not so good these days and we could barely make our way down the hall! We had dinner in the Chateau's Matterhorn restaurant. Service and ambiance excellent but unfortunately the food (at least what we ordered) wasn't that great compared to other places we've dined in New Zealand.
Review 101:Lovely place! Everything is done in wood which I found a bit overwhelming but they are going for mountain resort charm. The room is lovely. Has a little fridge, makings for coffee, tea etc. Very nice bathroom. Comfy bed. Overall, we enjoyed our one night stay at Powderhorn Chateau.
Review 102:Friendly, helpful staff who made local bookings for us; lovely terrace on room with outlook over river and trees; comfortable and cosy room with great bath. Will be back!
Review 103:Chaotic bar service Inadequate internet Avoid the pizzas
Review 104:Helpful staff. Laundry facilities Decent meal Lovely environment with an excellent walk just metres away. Easy driving access to alpine country.
Review 105:There was nothing we didn't like but as a suggestion it might be better to have a plug in kettles to keep the water hot for breakfast rather than the thermos jugs which weren't always boiling hot
Review 106:Staff in all areas were excellent from reception to the restaurant to housekeeping. Very very friendly and welcoming. Rooms were clean and well presented. The food at the hotel restaurant where we ate for 3 nights was consistently top quality and they catered for vegetarians and Gluten Free. Over three nights the 5 of us tried most of the menu and we were all full of praise for each meal.Overall we were all very pleasantly surprised at the quality of the Powderhorn and will stay there again - and recommend to others
Review 107:Nothing I didn't like . Chateau was very quiet but I think it would be a fun place to stay in the season.
Review 108:Bar staff were friendly and helpful. Thanks for the free breakfast in my room .
Review 109:A bit noisy due to the wooden structure.( I could hear the next door person's coughing spams in the morning.)
Review 110:Staff is very kind and friendly. The facility was clean, the heated pool had an interesting design and atmosphere. The food in both restaurants was delicious.
Review 111:Having to leave!!
Review 112:The evening meal was first class, this is the second time we have stayed there in the last month and both times, the menu was great.
Review 113:The staff were very friendly. The room was comfortable.
Review 114:Wonderful wooden accommodation Great restuarant Wonderful staff
